Axis Introduces Interactive 3D Camera Visualization Content for Autodesk® Revit® CAD Software

Axis Camera Families allows architects, engineers and security system designers to interactively virtualize camera layout and fields of view during building design;
Models include detailed metadata for Building Information Modeling

CHELMSFORD, Mass. – February 5, 2013 – Axis Communications, the world leader in network video, today launches a strong addition to its toolbox for security system designers with the introduction of Axis Camera Families, a collection of 3D surveillance camera models to be used with Autodesk® Revit® software.

Based on direct feedback from the Axis Architecture & Engineering (A&E) community, Axis Camera Families includes detailed metadata required for Building Information Modeling (BIM), such as power requirements and mounting accessories, and the camera models created for use in Autodesk Revit 3D CAD building layouts will allow security system designers to interactively visualize camera coverage, select the proper Axis cameras for surveillance needs and optimize the system layout (See demo video).

“We have used Axis Camera Families in CCTV designs for our clients,” said Todd Kotlaba, Associate & Systems Project Manager at TLC Engineering for Architecture, who received an early release of Axis Camera Families. “The true 3D models of the cameras provide us with the ability to run clash detection and conflict avoidance simulation with other building systems, such as mechanical, electrical and plumbing, to avoid routing conflicts and obstructions to a camera’s intended field of view.”

With the new 3D models in Axis Camera Families, security system designers can place different Axis network camera icons directly into CAD building plans to illustrate what the real life camera set-up will look like once installed and simultaneously showcase the areas that the surveillance system will cover. This allows designers to see exactly how the cameras fit into the building layout while helping to reduce unexpected blind spots by easily detecting if a camera’s field of view will be obstructed by columns or walls.

Kotlaba continued, “Axis Camera Families is extremely helpful for our clients that often cannot visualize what will be seen when construction is complete. The information also identifies pixels per foot for the camera selected, which helps meet our client’s expectation for the quality of the viewable image and recording resolution.”

With Axis Camera Families, security system planning can now be completed as an integrated part of building design using the same exact tool flow used by architects and engineers. Users of the CAD system can also access information about each camera, such as the model number, mounting accessories, power consumption and resolution.

"The role of the professional consultant is one of the most valuable in the surveillance design process, and Autodesk Revit has become a prolific tool for our A&E community,” said Jack Meltzer, A&E Program Manager at Axis Communications, Inc. “By listening to their wants and needs, well designed Revit models using Axis Camera Families can now improve planning and work efficiency by allowing architects and engineers to showcase an interactive representation of camera functionality that clearly demonstrates the different fields of view. This will result in more effective value engineering, device placement, conflict identification and aesthetic coordination.”

Axis Camera Families for Autodesk® Revit®, which includes the vast majority of Axis network cameras, is available today free of charge for existing Axis partners and members of the Axis A&E Program.

Note: BIM is a concept where all components in a building, such as walls, doors and plumbing, are compiled in a CAD database to provide a complete picture of every detail included in the design. This database is not only used in planning and constructing of the building, but also throughout the building’s entire lifespan to plan maintenance and management initiatives.

What is the true cost of "False Positives?"

by Fran Clark
V.P. Business Development
Profitect, Inc.

as published on October 3, 2012

A False Positive (FP) is when you investigate what you think is a problem for the company, it turns out to be a normal, valid transaction. FP does NOT mean that what you found wasn't fraud. I believe that any time you research what you believe to be a problem and it was a pricing, training, process or compliance issue... its isn't a false positive. A VP of Asset Protection for a top 10 retail organization once told me that his FP's were anywhere from 50%-90%. To me, that's a massive investment in investigation time.

For responses to my question, I won't disclose names of person, company or products referenced. I will publish the results of my findings. Perhaps a good study would be to find out how many FP's your department has for a month or a quarter... just for you own information. Fran can be emailed at francispclark@profitect.com.

How to Say 'Look at Me!' to an Online Recruiter  IF you are thinking of looking for a job this year, or are already searching for one, be warned: for some job seekers, the rules have changed. Technology and social media have altered the way some employers consider candidates. (Not a good route)

Stop Focusing on Your Performance  On the surface it seems easy to remember but in reality it’s almost impossibly difficult, because much of what we do feels like a performance. Even little things — leading a meeting, having a hallway conversation, sending an email — are followed by a silent but ever-present question. (How'd that go?)

3VR - video surveillance, video intelligence

The age of the email has truly changed the way humans communicate both personally and professionally, with emails becoming that fast pitch right down the middle and stinging the catcher's hand when they least expect it, and oftentimes first thing in the morning before you've even had time to drink your first cup of coffee. It has almost become an accepted practice for many to compose their negative or conflicting thoughts about the day's events or conversations and push that send button after everyone has left so they don't have to face the receiver and so that they can almost act innocent the next day as if some imposter sent it the night before. It's almost as if the email world has offered some sort of anonymity to senders, even when it comes from their own address.

Just a Thought,

Gus Downing
