Retail loss prevention team priorities for 2014
By Jennifer Overstreet Published:
April 1, 2014
The challenges facing today’s retail loss prevention teams are
increasingly complex and serious, from cyber security to active
shooter to workforce training, compliance issues and – unfortunately
– even armed gunmen inside stores or shopping malls. And with NRF’s
annual
Loss Prevention Conference and EXPO coming up in June, we wanted
to know what’s top of mind for retail LP professionals.
We asked a few of our
LP Advisory Council members to weigh in on what their top
priorities are for 2014. Three different retailers, three different
answers. But in our unofficial small survey, we found one common
theme — people.
 Steve
Ippolito, director of loss prevention,
Talbots
Our top priority is two-fold. Reducing shrink is always a priority,
but the No. 1 priority in our company is always the safety of our
associates and customers, so we’re focusing efforts on making sure
all of our LP programs address how to keep people safe in the world
we live in today. We’ve put a complete policy in place about how to
handle what we call an “active incident,” not just an active
shooter, and that will continue to evolve this year.
Joan
Manson, vice president of loss prevention, payroll, benefits and
legal,
The Container Store
It’s hard to state just one, but among our top priorities is ongoing
employee education and awareness given our employees’ integral role
in helping us meet all of our loss prevention goals. We’re updating
our employee training program to support our stores and ensure they
have the tools they need to assist us in preventing losses. Part of
that is developing additional exception reports for our store
management teams. This will help increase awareness for store
managers and ensure they’re well-trained on point of sale and our
ongoing compliance efforts. We also want to continue to invest in
our new and existing stores to ensure they have the very best
digital recording technology.
Charles
Delgado, vice president of asset protection,
Meijer
As we move through 2014, we’re squarely focused on reducing shrink
and increasing profitability. Shrink, whether operational or
transactional, undermines sales, so creating a formidable culture of
shrink awareness is a top priority. We’ll do this by leveraging
technology, along with training and development. Internet protocol
video, enhanced analytics and exception-based reporting will quickly
identify patterns of loss and enable our team to target problematic
activity efficiently. Training and development will fuel our team
for current and future productivity to support the organization and
address the fluid patterns and trends of theft, fraud and overall
shrink.
How do your team’s priorities compare to this sampling? We’d love to
hear what your goals are for 2014, so we’re continuing the
conversation in our
Retail Loss Prevention Professionals Group on LinkedIn. Log in
to join the conversation and connect with some of your retail LP
peers before the conference,
June 11-13 in Fort Lauderdale.

R Us RLPM Murder Case Update: Plea Deal Being Considered
A pre-trial hearing for Bernard Grucza, former RLPM for Toys R Us the man accused of killing a Toys R Us
assistant manager last July, inside the Hamburg, NY store, was adjourned
yesterday as both sides
consider a plea deal. After months of intense searching, law enforcement
agencies narrowed in on Grucza, who was a co-worker of Larry Wells. Wells, a
beloved assistant manager at the store, was brutally stabbed to death inside his
office. He left behind a daughter and a wife who was pregnant with the couple’s
second child. The Daily's
Special Report
published on October 18, 2013 outlines the details on how
this case unfolded. (Source

Kroger unveils new enterprise IT architecture called Retail Site Intelligence
Kroger on Wednesday partnered with eInfochips and Wincor Nixdorf on a new
enterprise IT architecture called Retail Site Intelligence, the companies
announced at the International Security Conference and Expo here. This
architecture for stores of the 21st century uses ZigBee wireless mesh networks
to integrate long battery life sensors, hand held devices, point-of-sale devices
and video management software into a next generation platform for retail
applications such as loss prevention, store automation and analytics. The
introduction of the RSI architecture, and the deployment of new retail business
solutions by Kroger, culminates two years of global collaboration between Kroger
and eInfochips to develop the underlying technology products for Stores of the
21st century. Commercial versions of the RSI solutions being piloted by Kroger
will be available later in 2014 with support and customization services
delivered globally. (Source

Omni retail is here and Omni LP might be the next big thing
Over the last 18 months the vast majority of retailers have added Omni channel
executives and all of the new efforts labeled Omni-channeling where the line
between brick and mortar and online disappear, appears to be the future of every
retailer on the planet. With digitally driven Millennials taking control with
expectations never seen before. And now this week Neiman Marcus makes it
official - there's no more separation between online and brick and mortar as
they merge the store and online merchandising and planning teams into a single
operation. And with that development how do we evolve as an industry? The
management teams are there and the biggest threat to the business is the online
hacker, and with EMV coming, online fraud will explode next year. So how are you
positioned when the tide has completely changed? Yes we'll still have the
fundamental needs and ORC will continue to increase as online actually helps
fuel the problem. But when the two worlds are completely merged who'll end up
leading the efforts? As the merger brings IT Security and LP closer together
there's going to be a day when one is the leader. Just a thought.

Mobile is lead driver for changes in payments technology
The ease with which customers can pay for purchases is absolutely integral to
the success of shopping on mobile. Having to enter too much information or copy
out card details on the move is cumbersome and off-putting for most people,
meaning transactions are often abandoned. "Shopping cart abandonment is one of
the major issues merchants are facing when it comes to mobile. The ability to
make payments is a significant part of the issue – after all, without successful
payment, no transaction can be completed," Oxman said. "Making mobile payments
faster and easier is a big driver for the types of mobile technology that are
being developed.” Whether it's about ensuring security, providing a converged
commerce experience or enabling widespread adoption and usage, one thing is
clear, greater collaboration across the payments chain will be core to the
success of mobile technologies. (Source

Paper Bitcoin wallets stop hackers finding your spacecash
The PiperWallet is a small black box that does little more than generate numbers
and spit out paper. But if you invest in bitcoin -- the popular digital currency
-- it could be a lifesaver. It's good to be a little paranoid when it comes to
storing bitcoins. There's a lot of malicious software out there that sniffs
around on computers for ways to steal the digital currency. That's why
PiperWallet takes a different tack. Based on the popular Raspberry Pi hardware
kit, this $200 (120 pounds) device makes bitcoin wallets out of paper. That way,
no one can hack them. "If people had stored their coins in PiperWallet, then
they wouldn't have lost them on Mt. Gox," says PiperWallet's creator, Chris
Cassano. He has sold about 300 of his PiperWallets to date, mostly to paranoid
bitcoin types, or to bitcoin ATM operators who want to give customers a quick
and easy way to print out a secure bitcoin wallet. The device is easy to use.
You plug it in, push a button, and out comes your wallet complete with digital
keys and phone-scannable QR codes. You can print a wallet, use your phone to
fund it with bitcoins, and then hand it over to a friend or family member just
like cash. (Source

Residents voice concern about Kroger security change Some residents
worry armed security guards may disappear from their area Kroger. "I worked here
back when I was in high school, and we had security guards, and they were
armed," said Hermitage resident Heath Robinson. "I think it's ridiculous. What's
the point in having security guards if they're not armed? You might as well put
a security uniform on a cashier. It's the same thing." 10 TV in Columbus, OH has
acquired a letter sent from the US Protection Service to their guards saying
employees will carry "no weapons (including knives and guns), no handcuffs, no
chemical repellent, no baton. A black belt should replace your duty belt while
working at Kroger." "We have numerous means to provide security in our stores,"
said Kroger spokesperson Melissa Eads. Eads declined to say whether local
security guards would continue to be armed, adding the company doesn't share
specific security plans. She did say Kroger recently decided to make changes to
security, though the changes vary from store to store based on what's happened
there the past three years. (Source

Axis Announces its First 4K Resolution Camera as Part of New Compact
Bullet-style Series
AXIS P1428-E Network Camera brings the 4K Ultra
HD standard to video surveillance with full frame rate performance in an
outdoor-ready package; Latest generation of ITU standard delivers four times the
resolution of 1080p
CHELMSFORD,
Mass. – April 1, 2014 – Axis Communications, the global leader in network
video, today announces its first 4K resolution camera with the outdoor-ready
AXIS P1428-E Network Camera. The 4K standard, an established motion picture
production and consumer television standard also known as Ultra HD, is defined
and approved by the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and offers a video resolution of
3840 x 2160 pixels at 30 frames per second.
Axis will showcase 4K Ultra HD performance at
booth #14059 during this week’s ISC West security tradeshow beginning on
Wednesday at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas.
The AXIS P1428-E Network Camera is the flagship model in the brand new AXIS P14
Series also announced today, which are compact bullet-style fixed cameras
designed for outdoor and demanding indoor environments. AXIS P1428-E with 4K
resolution offers a number of valuable features for security integrators and
end-customers, including remote zoom and focus, a built-in slot for a micro SD/SDHC/SDXC
memory card and I/O connectors for interfacing with external devices – all of
which make the camera ideal for overlooking large areas like parking lots, city
squares and stadiums while being able to capture fine details.
see a video clip from AXIS P1428-E Network Camera.
Axis was among the very first companies to introduce HDTV network cameras in the
surveillance market with the launch of
AXIS Q1755 Network Camera in January 2009. The introduction of 4K technology
into Axis’ product portfolio is a natural step in the journey to respond to
customer demand for consumer-grade resolution using standards-based technology.
“It was a game-changer when we launched the first true HDTV standard camera in
2009. Back then, AXIS Q1755 delivered 720p / 1080i performance for $1,499. With
4K Ultra HD, we can deliver four times 1080p resolution at a full 30 frames per
second for $500 less. It’s Moore’s Law and innovative product design at work,”
said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications, Inc. “We anticipate
that the new AXIS P14 Series will be a very popular choice for customers across
many industry segments, so we’re proud to offer the 4K standard in this
practical and cost-effective series at the onset.”
AXIS P14 Series consists of seven network cameras ranging from HDTV 1080p to 4K
Ultra HD. The innovative all-in-one mechanical design of AXIS P14 Series
includes the location of electrical components like the Ethernet connection,
memory card slot and I/O connectors in the foot of the camera. This offers
efficient and reliable video surveillance in any environment while allowing
customers to select the camera that best meets their specific requirements and
budget.
4K technology is an established industry standard both in motion picture
production and consumer displays. Initially, Axis anticipates that the majority
of AXIS P1428-E customers will utilize standard HDTV monitors. This will allow
them to enhance any portion of the screen to pull crisp forensic video from
large areas without losing details.
AXIS P1428-E Network Camera with 4K resolution is planned to be available in Q3
2014 through Axis’ distribution channels at a suggested retail price of $999.

In college Philosophy 101, they introduce the question "If a
tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"
My answer is yes, but you've got to listen and hear it. Listening and hearing
what they say is oftentimes two entirely different functions that most of us
don't do on a daily basis, if ever. One of the keys to success is listening and
hearing what people say and don't say. It's not just the words, it's the meaning
and the intention behind what everyone says in every conversation or interview.
Listening is the key and hearing is the lock the key fits into. If you expect to
lead a group or land that perfect job, you've got to listen and hear what
they're saying in order to respond, influence and truly make a difference.
Just a
Thought,
Gus Downing
