By Rich Mellor
Vice President, Loss Prevention
National Retail Federation

If there’s an area within retail that clearly illustrates the three pillars of NRF’s new “This is Retail” campaign, it’s loss prevention.

LP offers retail careers that range from mall security officers to senior executive opportunities at the corporate level, and LP professionals play a major role in preserving the safety of our nation’s communities much the same as sworn police officers.

The field often involves the latest in technological innovation, ranging from the newest digital surveillance cameras to the never-ending battle to keep cyber criminals from hacking into retail databases.

Over the past decade, there has been a recognizable trend in what is expected of LP professionals who seek to rise to leadership positions. It is no longer enough to understand just loss prevention as such. The new era of LP requires knowledge and understanding of information technology, human resources, store design and financial reporting, to name just a few areas. And loss prevention itself has expanded to include emergency response, safety, business continuity and cyber security, with responsibility for protection of company assets, employees and customers alike.

So it should come as no surprise that helping LP professionals who want to advance in their careers will be one of the themes of the NRF Loss Prevention Conference & EXPO, June 12-14 in San Diego. The LP Conference is where the best and brightest in retail loss prevention gather with key partners in law enforcement to network, engage in educational offerings and meet the challenges facing our industry. In addition to the usual panels and speeches on hands-on issues like organized retail crime or new techniques for conducting investigations, this year’s conference will feature sessions on how higher education can help LP professionals advance their careers and how to identify and cultivate the future retail LP leaders within your organization.

The conference also includes speakers who will focus on leadership — that elusive quality that transforms an LP professional into an LP executive. One example of great leadership is Navy Lt. Commander Rorke T. Denver. If you don’t recognize the name you might recognize the face — he was one of the real-life Navy SEALS starring in last year’s Golden Globe-nominated movie “Act of Valor” and has led special forces missions in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and a host of other international hot spots. His keynote on “elite leadership” will draw on those experiences to explain the value of training, preparation, teamwork and motivation to sparking and sustaining high levels of performance.

Also on the agenda is FBI Academy instructor Larry Barton, one of the world’s leading experts on threat assessment, who has managed nearly 3,000 cases and written four books on the subject. He’s also a face you’ve seen as a commentator for CNN and the BBC during the Sandy Hook school shootings. He will address how retailers can process and manage threats in stores, distribution centers and those shared and spread via social media, along with how domestic disputes can create havoc in stores.

With speakers like those and more than two dozen in-depth sessions on specific issues, the conference has much to offer LP staff and executives at all levels of the profession. Whether you’re looking to become a senior executive or just move up through the ranks, the message is clear — LP is not just a job, it’s a career.

Abercrombie meets with Teen Activist, but CEO Mike Jeffries is a ‘no show’.
No one was surprised that CEO Mike Jefferies did not make time to address his recent outspoken critics, but representatives from A&F held a two hour meeting with the activists. The activists seemed to be focused on increasing the sizes of the clothing available in stores. Jeffries was recently criticized for making comments that offended the ‘not pretty and skinny people’. Walgreens, Alliance Boots USA and AmerisourceBergen Corp. are forming a new global partnership; possibly lowering pharmaceutical costs for customers and increasing profits. The three pharmacy giants are forming a new partnership to distribute and sell prescriptions drugs, a move that could transform the way medications are purchased and shipped globally. The 10-year distribution contract between Walgreen Co, Alliance Boots GmbH and AmerisourceBergen Corp. hands one entity a significant amount of drug-buying volume, which will allow the companies to demand lower prices from drug makers. The international alliance also creates a clearer path for more U.S. drugs to launch more quickly overseas—and vice versa. It could give Walgreen a significant leg up over rivals as generic drugs comprise an ever-growing percentage of U.S. prescription drug sales. (Source

The CEO of McDonald's Just Got Owned by a 9-Year Old
9-year old, Hannah, definitely gave the CEO of McDonald's, Don Thompson, something to think about when she began to question McDonald's concerns regarding serving unhealthy food to children. She asked him, "Don't you want kids to be healthy so they can live a long and healthy life?" His response? Short and sweet: "We don't sell junk food." McDonald's has recently bumped up their health-conscious efforts by adding smoothies, egg-white breakfast sandwiches and the new Chicken McWraps to their menus, however people continue to think of Big Macs and fries when they think of McDonald's. The "Target effect" hits Wal-Mart Canada in 1st Quarter
Even Wal-Mart Canada may not be immune to what retail watchers are calling “the Target effect.” Same-store sales, operating income and foot traffic suffered at the country’s biggest mass merchant during Target’s first quarter in Canada, amid a period of dampened consumer spending and unusually cold weather. More critically, sales at Canadian stores open for more than a year, an important barometer of retail health known as same-store sales, fell 1.3% in the period ended April 30 and customer traffic at those stores declined 2%. Walmart Canada had prepared extensively for Target’s arrival in the past year by significantly boosting its assortment of food and by renovating and adding multiple stores, upping its store count by 13.8% as it took over 39 Zellers stores and boosting overall square footage in the Canadian market by a whopping 10.6%. PrePass-CargoNet alliance to combat cargo theft

HELP, Inc. will bolster its support of cargo theft recovery efforts by delivering CargoNet® theft alerts through the PrePass system to roadside enforcement officers at nearly 300 truck inspection facilities in more than 30 states.

“Providing roadside officers with cargo theft alerts adds yet another checkpoint to the network already in place to catch cargo thieves,” said Karen Rasmussen, president and CEO of HELP Inc., the service provider of PrePass and other safety services. “ Cargo theft statistics show that the chance for recovery drops sharply once criminals remove cargo from the truck, so alerts through the PrePass truck-screening system will enhance recovery efforts and reduce the carrier costs associated with cargo thefts.”

CargoNet alert information will be provided to site officers through the PrePass site system-messaging feature.

“We are pleased to join with HELP to deliver a practical, on-the-ground solution to cargo recovery,” said Anthony Canale, general manager of CargoNet. “Finding stolen cargo requires a multi-layered approach, and the PrePass program adds an important new tactic to this effort.”

Interacting in large networking groups can be very challenging even for the most seasoned of executives. The speed, the number of people, and the amount of information shared can be overwhelming. However, the one basic principal you can rely on is keep it simple, one person at a time and focus on that person both mentally and visually. Slow it down in your head and make sure you communicate clearly and sincerely regardless of the background you have with anyone or any group. Because at the end of the day you're all part of the same industry, the same community, and everyone has the same objective; to help develop and represent the industry as professionals.
