Target LP Officer Finds Loaded Gun in Toy Aisle in Myrtle Beach Store - Pressure Mounts on Target to Ban Firearms  Michael Bloomberg-backed Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America has launched a campaign asking Target to ban the open carrying of guns in its stores just as news emerges out of South Carolina adding urgency to their mission. A loss prevention officer found a real, loaded gun in the toy aisle of a Myrtle Beach branch of Target last Friday night. The gun was in plain view on top of a superhero Playskool toy box when the LP officer found it; he thought it was a toy. He realized it was real after seeing it was loaded with live ammo. The fact that it was found in an aisle geared toward children makes some shoppers feel this was no accident. (Source forbes.com) (Source wmbfnews.com)

Burlington Coat Factory Expands Deployment of Corrective Education Company's Restorative Justice Education Program  Corrective Education Company (CEC) announced that Burlington Coat Factory will be expanding the deployment of its restorative justice education program to more of its locations. Burlington Coat Factory initially launched the program in four of its high risk locations in January of 2014. Results from the initial pilot program showed significant decreases in both apprehension processing time and repeat offenders in stores. “This is a program that is a win-win for everybody. The Retailer, Law Enforcement and the Offender,” stated James Connelly, Senior Vice President of Asset Protection for Burlington Stores. “I see no reason not to utilize CEC as part of any retailer’s Loss Prevention program.” (Source correctiveeducation.com)

0.03% increase in online fraud prevention spend returns a dramatic 8% drop in credit card fraud  Fraudulent use of stolen credit cards, the biggest area of online loss, is down by 8% since last year, a leading industry survey has revealed. The results of the survey have shown online fraud prevention spend has increased from 0.3% of sales in 2012 and 0.4% in 2013, to 0.43% this year. As a result there has been a major decrease in shrink in online credit card fraud from 51% in 2013 to 43% in 2014. This is a decrease of 8% from last year’s figure. This link between increased spend and reduced online credit card fraud shows just how the industry is recognising the importance of online fraud prevention. Don Bush from Kount, the UK Retail Fraud Survey sponsor stresses the growing importance of online fraud prevention: “Ecommerce grew a healthy 18% in 2013, cybercrime grew at about 23% in the same period which greatly emphasizes the need for a robust online loss prevention strategy.” Coming soon: The US Retail Fraud Survey 2014. The Retail Equation Chief Data Scientist David Speights to Present at 25th Annual ACFE Global Fraud Conference  David Speights, Ph.D., chief data scientist for The Retail Equation, the industry leader in retail transaction optimization solutions, will present at the 25th Annual ACFE Global Fraud Conference on June 16 at 1:40 p.m. CT in San Antonio, Texas. In the session titled “Impact of Big Data Tools on Fraud Identification and Prevention in Retail Transactions,” Speights will discuss the growing role big data and statistics play in a retailer’s approach to loss prevention issues and solutions. According to the recently published ACFE 2014 Global Fraud Study, survey participants estimated the typical organization loses 5 percent of revenues each year to fraud. If applied to the 2013 estimated Gross World Product, this translates to a potential projected global fraud loss of nearly $3.7 trillion. (Source theretailequation.com)

Fencing Operation Busted: Seven Roanoke store owners to be indicted  Seven Roanoke store owners will be indicted for buying stolen goods and reselling them. The following stores involved are Pure Station, K&H Grocery, Toni's Grocery, Community Grocery, P&N Market, Triangle Market, and M&S Stop Mart. This is part of a year long investigation. Investigators say a group of shoplifters stole items from stores then resold the products to the seven stores listed above. According to investigators, that money was used to buy drugs. Meanwhile, the businesses owners who bought the stolen items then resold them. (Source wsls.com)

Multi-State Retail Theft Crime Ring Bust in Marion County, Florida  Two men arrested for stealing a couple hundred dollars of toiletries from a CVS in Marion County opened up an investigation to a multi-state retail theft crime ring. Willie Willis and Charlie Pitts are thought to be low level players involved in stealing thousands of dollars of household and personal hygiene items and then re-selling them for a lower price. Both men told detectives they have traveled around Central and North Central Florida and parts of South Georgia committing this kind of retail theft. The sheriff's office is currently working with area stores to prevent this crime ring from succeeding.  (Source wcjb.com)

Baltimore Man sentenced to 4 years/$210,000 in shoplifting-gift card conspiracy A Baltimore man has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for his role in a shoplifting scam in which stolen goods were returned to stores for gift cards. Forty-seven-year-old Mark Brunelle was also ordered to pay more than $210,000 in restitution at sentencing Wednesday in federal court in Baltimore. According to his plea agreement, Brunelle and others stole merchandise from large retail stores in central Maryland, then returned the stolen items for store gift cards. (Source washingtonpost.com)

Saginaw County Sheriff driving Honda Element 'taken from a theft ring'  It may not be as racy as the Ford Mustang or as classy as the Lincoln Town Car that Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel drove on duty in the past. But the sheriff's new ride has one thing in common with his former vehicles. The Honda Element, dubbed "the toaster" by Federspiel and others at the department, has the words "Taken from a theft ring" displayed on both sides of the vehicle, along with gold Saginaw County Sheriff logos on top of black paint. Criminals seeking more buyers with all-in-one malware
Security researchers have discovered multipurpose malware capable of stealing payment card numbers from electronic cash registers and data entered in Web forms through a browser. The piece of Soraya, the malware, that could be used in attacking retailers' electronic cash registers, called point-of-sale (POS) systems, scrapes debit- and credit-card numbers from memory after cardholders swipe their cards at the register. The technique is similar to what was used in the Target breach that led to the theft of 10s of millions of payment card numbers during last year's holiday shopping season. Soraya is not related to the Target malware. A twist in Soraya's memory scraping is its use of the Luhn algorithm, a formula used to determine which numbers collected are valid payment card numbers. Hackers Aim Phishing Attacks At New Retail Brands
As big companies like eBay and Target bolster their defenses following attacks from hackers, experts say that cybercriminals are also targeting other e-commerce and retail firms that could be vulnerable to phishing attacks intended to steal credit-card and other personal data. APWG's "Global Phishing Survey" study says that in the second half of last year, 324 of the 681 retailers and brands hit by phishing attacks had not been targets in the first half. The victims of phishing attacks tracked by APWG in the second half of 2013 included U.S. firms as well as Chinese and other foreign companies. Taobao, Alibaba's e-commerce unit, was the second-most targeted institution. EBay's PayPal payments unit was the most targeted. Other U.S. targets included Home Depot, jeweler Tiffany and Hertz Global Holdings' Hertz Rent-a-Car. (Source investors.com)

NeWave Sensor Solutions and Cam Connections Partner to Release New Wireless Smart Shelf at NRF LP Show

Visit Cam Connections' Booth #1301 on June 11 and 12

Plain City (Columbus), Ohio - June 2, 2014 – NeWave Sensor Solutions, LLC today announced it is partnering with Cam Connections, Inc. to demonstrate its new Smart Shelf system at the NRF Loss Prevention Expo on June 11 and 12th at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. Cam Connections will be exhibiting in Booth 1301.

The NeWave Smart Shelf is a unique and patented “no tags required” on-shelf inventory control system that utilizes the revolutionary Wave RFID antenna to provide precisely accurate, real-time automatic monitoring and notification of on shelf merchandise availability with as little as a smart phone. Out of Stock and low stock conditions can also be immediately detected and corrected to accelerate sales and improve customer satisfaction. Based on criteria set by the retailer for low inventory limits, the Smart Shelf software signals an alert that can be sent to store managers, local and regional loss prevention personnel or anyone who needs to be notified of theft or low inventory availability. Potential Organized Retail Crime (ORC) incidents are alerted at the shelf rather than the front door, avoiding associate confrontations. The Smart Shelf has been well proven in the real-world and installation is presently being expanded in food, drug and mass merchandiser stores.

Robert Bull, Cam Connections President expressed: “We are excited about working with NeWave and their Smart Shelf technology. This is the first “No tags required “solution that is ideal for continuously monitoring merchandise availability in real-time. Working with NeWave expands our product offering into RFID."

Joe Ryan, CEO of NeWave stated: "We developed the Smart Shelf system to assist retailers in combating organized retail theft and out of stock shelf conditions. These are two critical problems that represent billions of annual dollar losses for retailers. Retailers and consumer goods manufacturers have never before had immediate access to the on shelf item level inventory movement our solution can provide. Smart Shelf also provides detailed product selection data at the shelf that was never available in the past. The efficiencies gained have proven to be enormous. We are very excited to be partnering with Cam Connections to demonstrate our unique Smart Shelf capability.”

The 5 Questions that Successful People Routinely Ask Themselves  While the definition of success is different for everyone, there is one thing successful people have in common and that is to be better than the previous day. Forward momentum is key, and asking yourself the big questions can guide you. Here are some questions you want to ask yourself. (In the right niche?)

The Simplest Way to Build Trust
When talking with someone, it's hard to know what is motivating them. Whether trying to make a negotiation or maybe hiring a potential candidate, you need to build trust with people you interact with and the most effective way to do that is to find the link that connects you and him or her. (Perception of similarity)

How Venting Influences Self-Improvement -- 4 Strategies for Success  Venting is a powerful influencer. Education is a broad term usually defined by an individual as a singular focus with an end result that oftentimes stagnates the brain and limits horizons. Reaching milestones is incredibly important, but keeping your curiosity and wonderment is the key to reaching beyond. No singular degree or certification will bring you the success – it merely opens the door to more learning and the realization that if you don't know something, you go find someone who does and learn it from them.
