Welcome Back: Target Opens Doors at Newly Rebuilt Stores in Minneapolis and Atlanta
We're thrilled to reopen our doors at our Lake Street store in Minneapolis and our Buckhead South store in Atlanta this week.

After
closing due to damage sustained during the demonstrations for racial justice in late spring, we rebuilt the stores from the ground up in just five months, making them two of the fastest rebuilds in Target history.

Stronger than ever on Lake Street in Minneapolis

"I've been with Target for 19 years, and volunteering and connecting with the community is key to our purpose," says Bawang Longar, Assets Protection executive team lead at Lake Street. "We're part of this neighborhood and want to be part of its healing process, too."

"The cavalry is coming"
States ramp up for biggest vaccination effort in US history

With a COVID-19 vaccine drawing closer, public health officials across the country are gearing up for the biggest vaccination effort in U.S. history - a monumental undertaking that must distribute hundreds of millions of doses, prioritize who's first in line and ensure that people who get the initial shot return for the necessary second one.

"The cavalry is coming," Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America." He said he hopes shots will be available to all Americans in April, May and June.

State and local officials are also planning for the likelihood that the first shipments will not be enough to cover everyone in high-priority groups.

Similar preparations are happening at the federal level. Welch listened in last week on a "war gaming" session by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"We not only have to bring people back for a second dose, but need to make sure that we have very good records of which vaccine they received the first time," said Dr. Jinlene Chan of Maryland's health department.

To help people find doses in their area, the CDC wants to put information on a vaccine finder website, which will be updated each day with the latest inventory. startribune.com

@80/10 - It's Almost the Old 80/20 Rule
New study reveals the locations at highest risk of spreading COVID-19

Most COVID-19 cases in large US cities stem from visits to just a few types of places, a new study suggests.

Restaurants, gyms, hotels and houses of worship are among the 10 percent of locations that would appear to account for 80 percent of the infections, according to research published in the journal Nature on Tuesday.

Reducing the establishments' capacity to 20 percent, as opposed to shutting them down entirely, could curb transmissions by 80 percent, the prof said.

"Our work highlights that it doesn't have to be all or nothing," Leskovec said.

The study, which included researchers from Northwestern University as well as Stanford, analyzed cellphone data from 98 million Americans in 10 major cities, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.

"On average across metro areas, full-service restaurants, gyms, hotels, cafes, religious organizations, and limited-service restaurants produced the largest predicted increases in infections when reopened," the study said. nypost.com

They've Already Been Told: Mobile Morgues No Longer Enough
As Hospitalizations Soar, El Paso Brings In New Mobile Morgues

The nation hit a record number of coronavirus hospitalizations on Tuesday. The feared third wave has left cities like El Paso struggling with overloaded I.C.U. wards and scarce staffing.

Local leaders clashed over what to do to quell the spiraling coronavirus crisis. The top county official ordered a lockdown and curfew. But the mayor disagreed, and the police said they would not enforce it. Then the state attorney general weighed in - a lockdown was unnecessary and illegal, he said. nytimes.com

Record 7,228 new COVID-19 cases reported in Minnesota
A record 7,228 new COVID-19 cases and 39 new deaths - the second-highest one-day total yet - were reported Thursday in Minnesota. Health officials reported 292 new hospital admissions.

"Hospitals, health systems and health care providers are watching with growing concern as COVID-19 cases quickly increase in Minnesota, fueled by broad community spread in all parts of the state. Demand for hospital care is increasing in both medical-surgical and intensive care units, and the percentage of beds occupied by patients with COVID-19 is growing. startribune.com

New Jersey sees massive COVID-19 surge as positivity rate soars
The coronavirus pandemic is roaring back in New Jersey as officials revealed Thursday that the Garden State has seen more than 10,000 new cases since Monday and that a frightening 12 percent of tests are coming back positive. Murphy hinted that additional restrictions might be on the table to get the infection rate back under control. nypost.com

New Mexico COVID Cases Through the Roof With 1,500 Wednesday
The state Department of Health reported 1,500 infections across 31 of the state's 33 counties and at two state correctional facilities. Early in the week leaders of three hospital systems in Albuquerque warned that New Mexico hospitals are "essentially full," running low on general and ICU beds as well as personnel to attend to COVID-19 and other patients.

New Mexico residents have been instructed by the health department and hospital leaders to stay home as much as possible, avoid gathering with people outside one's household or to maintain at least six feet of distance from those individuals and to wash one's hands frequently using soap. govtech.com

Big Changes Coming For Retailers in 2021

OSHA's Role & Enforcement to Increase Significantly

Biden labor policy likely to feature stronger enforcement, COVID-19 action
The incoming administration is expected to take a different approach to policy and enforcement, especially with respect to immigration and organized labor.

Biden's administration can start to reverse some of President Donald Trump's executive orders and also issue some of its own. Multiple sources that spoke with HR Dive said they believe executive orders and updated enforcement of existing laws will be the primary labor focus of the Biden administration, especially in the short-term, along with managing a COVID-19 response that incorporates stronger measures for employee safety.

"I think we're likely to see a focus on relief and recovery efforts, in particular [...] through a lens of what workers need to work safely in this moment," Celine McNicholas, director of government affairs and legal counsel at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning policy think tank, told HR Dive. "No one having to return to work in an unsafe situation; looking at ways to ensure that workers are not denied employment insurance protections," she added.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is expected to enact emergency temporary standards, such as workplace safety and sanitation guidelines for COVID-19, according to the Biden platform, which also called for doubling the number of OSHA investigators and a "restart package" to help business owners "cover the costs of operating safely, including things like plexiglass and PPE."

Half of California Moving Backward
Amid coronavirus surge in California, 11 counties fall backward in reopening plans

Among the backsliders were San Diego, Sacramento and Stanislaus counties, all of which moved into the purple tier - the strictest category of the state's reopening roadmap.

This week also marked the first time that no counties moved forward into a less restrictive tier, said California's health and human services secretary, Dr. Mark Ghaly.

"We anticipate, if things stay the way they are, that between this week and next week, over half of California counties will have moved into a more restrictive tier.,"

With the three new additions to the purple tier, nearly one-quarter of California counties now find themselves living under the most stringent coronavirus-related restrictions. The others are Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial, Monterey, Tulare, Madera, Sonoma, Tehama and Shasta counties. As of Tuesday's tier update, 13 counties are in the purple tier, 22 are in red, 17 in orange and six in yellow.

Moving to the purple tier forces many businesses and organizations to either reduce capacity or move their operations outdoors. latimes.com

Five ways to design a better mental-health future for a stressed-out workforce
Almost 41 percent of Americans struggle with mental-health issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, but many companies remain ill equipped to address the problem.

The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in more Americans experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety. A recent survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that almost 41 percent of American adults struggle with mental-health issues stemming from the pandemic. That number increases to 75 percent among those 18 to 24 years old. The top three challenges employees cite during this time are anxiety over layoffs, burnout, and mental health - ranking well above other concerns, like financial security, childcare, and homeschooling responsibilities. Women were approximately 1.5 times more likely to report mental health as a challenge as compared with men. And at the same time, Latino and Black Americans are consistently reporting higher levels of anxiety and depression than white Americans. This all poses a serious threat to our current and future workforce, our economy, and our collective success.

Every leader must ask, "What are we doing to help our employees stay physically and emotionally healthy?"

Here's the Money
CFOs Watch for a Possible Minimum Wage Hike Under Biden

Companies are considering raising prices, cutting workers' hours and investing in automation to offset a potential rise in labor costs

President-elect Joe Biden has proposed increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2026, up from the current $7.25. Raising the pay floor would help low-wage workers, Mr. Biden said before the Nov. 3 elections.

Companies including Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., Potbelly Corp. and Texas Roadhouse Inc. are already doing the math to assess what a higher federal minimum wage could mean for their operations and cost base.

Raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour could cost 1.3 million Americans their jobs, the Congressional Budget Office estimated last year, though it would raise the pay of 17 million others. wsj.com

PTSD Drives High Court Ruling
Walmart must cover treatment for injured security guard

The Supreme Court of Alaska ruled Friday that Walmart Associates Inc. must continue to provide benefits to a security guard who in 2016 was shot in the face with a pellet gun in an altercation at a store in Eagle Ridge, Alaska, and continues to suffer both physically and mentally, calling earlier rulings on treatment "frivolous."

While the worker, who suffered because the pellet was lodged near the optic nerve of his right eye and could not be surgically removed, received treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and pain, Walmart "contended that he was not disabled by the psychological injury," among other claims documented in No. 7490, filed in Anchorage. Anchors Away: How Department Stores are Ditching Malls
Who's Ditching Who Here? Let's Not Kid Ourselves - It's a Divorce

Half of ALL Mall-Based Department Stores to Close by End of 2021
Green Street Advisors analysts in April said they expect a little more than half of all mall-based department stores to close by the end of next year. That in turn triggers clauses in inline tenant, or non-anchor, leases that allow for an easy exit or an unscheduled renegotiation of rent. The pandemic has played a part in this, but it has merely concentrated into a couple of years what would have played out anyway in five to 10, according to Green Street.

The inline effect can already be seen. Gap Inc. last year cited declining traffic as its reason for fleeing the mall, for example, and this year executives said that 350 Gap and Banana Republic stores would close, mostly at malls. The company aims to have some 80% of its physical stores at strip centers instead.

Department stores are increasingly distancing themselves from malls, literally and rhetorically. In Nordstrom's case, executives have recently emphasized that they're not so much of a mall retailer anymore. This year the retailer said it would close 16 full-line stores, and, shortly after, CEO Erik Nordstrom noted that the company's mall stores delivered just 38% of its revenue last year.

Dillard's, J.C. Penney, Kohl's and Belk are examples of retailers in the segment finding success in what is a smaller, lower-cost arrangement.

While any anchor closing is a blow to a mall, Macy's, which runs nearly 550 namesake stores and 56 Bloomingdale's locations, has an outsized influence on the format's decline. Macy's executives said they would close 125 more stores in the next three years and move some stores to open air centers, a plan that could further devastate the traditional malls where most of those stores sit.

"The biggest problem for landlords today is not necessarily Macy's, it's the pandemic," retaildive.com

Editor's Note: In this writer's opinion, it's the customers ditching both of them. Many shoppers haven't felt safe in Malls for a couple years now with the increase in active shooters and online has flourished, evolved and been fed by COVID. And in this day and age who has time to walk the Malls. The bottom line is the customer wants to get in and out as quick as possible and as safe as possible. Plain and simple. So all the stores are catapulting the Malls. Just my opinion, Gus Downing

Probing Marriott's Mega-Breach: 9 Cybersecurity Takeaways

Investigators Find Encryption, Monitoring, Logging and Whitelisting Failures

Inadequate monitoring of databases and privileged accounts, incomplete multifactor authentication and insufficient use of encryption: These are among the catalog of errors cited by British privacy regulators investigating the failures that contributed to the massive data breach involving Marriott's Starwood guest reservation system.

Maryland-based global hotel chain Marriott suffered one of the worst data breaches in history, which only came to light in 2018, four years after it began. By then, an estimated 339 million individuals' personal details had been exposed. careersinfosecurity.com

Breaking the Kill Chain
How to Avoid Getting Killed by Ransomware

Using a series of processes, infosec pros can then tap automated data hygiene to find and fix files that attackers key in on.

The "kill chain." A successful attack (the "kill") doesn't just happen. It's the end result of a sequence of essential steps (the "chain") that must be completed in order. If you break the chain, you stop the attack.

If you want to strengthen your defenses against ransomware, you'll need to consider the entire cybersecurity alphabet - from authentication to zero-day malware defenses. In this article, I'll look at an abbreviated kill chain for ransomware with a focus on the "discover and spread" step. Then I'll introduce a strategy of automated data hygiene that can find and fix the overshared files that attackers either take hostage or use to move closer to the kill. darkreading.com

Remote Work - Shoulder Reading Your Typing
This horrifying Zoom hack will deter you from ever side-chatting again

It's time to rethink the way we connect Zoom, Skype, and Google Hangouts.

Now that we spend so much of our days on Zoom, I think we can all be adult enough to admit: We've all side-chatted, saying one thing to the camera, and another on the side. Maybe it was a joke over Gchat at a coworker's expense. Maybe it was just multitasking some emails. Maybe it was entering a password into another site.

It's a relatively innocuous behavior, but it could come back to bite us. Researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Oklahoma have demonstrated something terrifying: They can read what people are typing during video calls on Zoom, Skype, and Google Hangouts with up to 93% accuracy. What are they analyzing to do so? Not your hands, but your shoulders. fastcompany.com

What cannabis security can benchmark from retail security

Security concerns in cannabis mirror concerns in retail, especially at the point of sale

The cannabis industry faces unique challenges compared to retail in general. Elements such as a different regulatory framework by state, a lack of banking options due to federal restrictions, and a still-thriving secondary market all contribute additional security considerations. These aspects can also create attractive theft and fraud opportunities for potential malefactors than is found in more traditional retail sectors.

A 2019 hearing held by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs featured witness testimony that
one in every two cannabis dispensaries were the target of robberies with typical losses as high as $50,000 per robbery. Dispensary operators must manage this security risk while still creating a positive customer experience.

Finding cost-effective ways to reduce this risk is a priority for both dispensaries and the retail industry more broadly. And the
use of technologies with AI not only strengthens security but also business operations in general. Camera analytics can alert operators to long customer wait times, automate inventory checks, and even ensure the correct promotional signage is displayed.

Point of Sale is the Apex of Accountability

For both dispensaries and retailers in general, the focus area for security is the point of sale. Video cameras covering the cash register are ubiquitous. And
incorporating additional technologies such as sound, AI, or other business intelligence analytics transforms the overall security system from one that merely records events for forensic review, to a proactive tool for operations. securityinfowatch.com

Cannabis Results of 2020 Elections
Support for cannabis has been growing in recent years, and elections in 2020 saw substantial victories for the industry. Multiple states from across the country legalized recreational and medical cannabis. This could prompt even more states to legalize in the future. But cannabis is not the only drug with increasing support - psilocybin therapies and psychedelics are also growing in popularity.

Arizona: Recreational
The Smart and Safe Act was passed in Arizona with support from almost 60% of voters. A similar bill failed to pass in 2016. This act effectively
legalized adult-use cannabis within the state.

Mississippi: Medical
In Mississippi, the vote
legalized medical cannabis and established a medical cannabis program.

New Jersey: Recreational
The State of New Jersey
legalized adult-use cannabis with 67% of voters in support.

South Dakota: Medical and Recreational
This year, South Dakota became the first state to
legalize both medical and recreational cannabis during a single election.

Montana: Recreational
Montana
legalized adult-use cannabis through Constitutional Initiative 118 and Initiative 190.

Oregon: Recreational
Oregon also became the first US state to
decriminalize all drugs. The state will no longer enforce jail or prison time for the possession of small amounts of illegal drugs.

Washington, DC: Psychedelic Plants
Residents in Washington, DC have voted to effectively
decriminalize 'magic mushrooms' and other psychedelic plants. sapphirerisk.com

Why Explosive Applications Create Bulletproof Marijuana Businesses
In 2019, legalized Marijuana's domestic sales reached $11.7 billion, and grow, processing and dispensary licenses were valued at (and, reportedly, sold for) over $20 million dollars.

Licenses are granted by the respective 33 states with Marijuana programs, most of which impose an arduous competitive application process and deny 91% of the submissions.

Like any other contest, the competitive process for obtaining a license to grow, process and sell Marijuana is won
before the application is submitted but can also yield a blueprint for launching a lucrative, compliant and saleable Cannabis business. cannabisbusinessexecutive.com

It's Getting Treacherous on Amazon
Keyword Sabotage on Amazon & Giant Refuses to ID Perpetrator

Trybus Corp., one of the most prominent sellers of cloth masks on Amazon.com, says it lost $50,000 in revenue last week when its Amazon shop was sabotaged by a perpetrator that the e-commerce giant refuses to identify. Trybus chief financial officer Gary Adelman called the scheme "really ingenious."

Unknown external party published a duplicate listing of Trybus' best-selling item, a package of five masks, on Amazon's Canadian store with keywords like "N95" and "PPE," triggering Amazon to remove the company's legitimate listings in the U.S.

A number of sellers on Amazon's forums have been sharing similar experiences for at least the last month, referring to it as "keyword sabotage."

In lieu of answers from Amazon, Adelman told The News that Trybus suspects a competitor could be the culprit based on the targeted nature of the attack. Amazon did help the company get its affected U.S. listing back online. dallasnews.com

A Couple Bad Actors Just Won't Stop - They Just Keep Popping Back Up

Amazon sues online influencers engaged in a counterfeit scheme
Amazon on Thursday announced a lawsuit against over a dozen bad actors, including online influencers and other businesses, who attempted to evade Amazon's anti-counterfeiting measures by promoting luxury counterfeit products on social media sites, like TikTok and Instagram, as well as on personal websites, then using Amazon seller accounts to fulfill those orders.

The suit alleges that defendants, Kelly Fitzpatrick and Sabrina Kelly-Krejci, conspired with sellers to run a scheme that involved posting
side-by-side photos of a generic, non-branded product which could be found on Amazon, and a luxury counterfeit product. The text on the posting would read "Order this/Get this."

The "Order this" pointed to a generic product being falsely advertised on Amazon.
"Get this," meanwhile, was referencing the luxury counterfeit products the consumer would receive instead.

They also
promoted the high quality of their luxury counterfeit goods using videos on Instagram, TikTok, and personal websites, and sent users to Amazon and other e-commerce websites, like DHgate, to transact.

Fitzpatrick had been a member of Amazon's Influencer Program while the counterfeiting scheme was underway. From Nov. 23, 2019 through March 6, 2020, she participated in the program under the username Kellyfitz02-20. When Amazon detected her activities, she was banned from the program and it closed her Associates account.

She then attempted to open new Associate accounts and continued to advertise the counterfeit items on social media, where she directed her followers to her own website for purchases, as well as to other e-commerce sites. Instagram had shut down Fitzpatrick's prior accounts, but she would create new ones when that occurred.

Though Fitzpatrick made her current Instagram account private, her website is still online where it shows her promoting the so-called "hidden links" on
Amazon where consumers could buy the counterfeits.

Similarly, Kelly-Krejci used her website to direct users to
"hidden links" on Amazon where they could buy counterfeit products, saying in one video, she "know[s] some people feel weird ordering from hidden links but in this case you will get something fabulous." techcrunch.com

Bigger than Thanksgiving-Black Friday & Cyber Monday Combined

Alibaba Sets 'Singles Day' Sales Record
By the end of Nov. 11, also known as Singles Day, Alibaba Group said it had
raked in the equivalent of a record $75.1 billion.

The Hangzhou-based company, which operates two of the country's most popular e-commerce platforms, this year extended the buying window of its annual shopping event from one day in previous years to several days. That helped it break last year's buying record by 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

But growing regulatory pressure on a popular way that shoppers fund purchases on Alibaba's e-commerce sites and
new draft rules proposed Tuesday to curtail the influence of internet companies cast a shadow on the event.

Singles Day was originally
conceived as a lighthearted holiday for Chinese to celebrate their unmarried status. Alibaba has over the past decade turned it into China's biggest shopping bonanza, generating more revenue than the U.S.'s Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday events combined, according to data from Adobe Analytics.

This year consumers could make their purchases during the first
three days of November and on Singles Day itself. That was to alleviate pressure on the logistics industry, allow consumers more time to shop and merchants more time to plan their operations, Alibaba said

Shootings & Deaths

Millcreek, UT: Utah Lighting Store customer dies after she was shoved;
woman faces homicide charge

A woman is facing a homicide charge after she shoved a woman in a Utah store in July, causing injuries that led to the victim's death. Cashell Kelly Carr, 45, was charged in 3rd District Court with homicide by assault and criminal mischief, third-degree felonies. According to charging documents, the assault that led to the death of Kathryn Wells happened July 11 at Felt Lighting. Store employees told police that Carr came in pushing a child in a wheelchair, laid down on a rug just inside the front entrance and "appeared to need assistance." One employee gave Carr a bottle of water, and a short time later Carr got up and started hitting her 15-year-old son, who was in the wheelchair. (According to police, the boy is "nonambulatory/nonverbal autistic.")

When an employee asked Carr to stop, she threw the water bottle and began breaking store property, causing more than $2,000 in damage. Carr then approached a store employee and Wells, "placed both hands on" her and "shoved her with extreme force." Wells landed about 9 feet from where she was standing, and was unable to move. Wells was taken to a hospital, where X-rays showed her pelvis was broken in three places. According to charging documents, she told police that when two other employees told Carr to leave the store, the suspect got away from them and ran up to her and started screaming obscenities in her face. Then, Wells said, Carr "shoved me with all of her power. And I just went flying. I mean, my feet were not touching the ground. I did not say a word to her, not a word, and she shoved me and I landed on the cement, tile floor."

Wells died on July 31, 20 days after she was shoved. She was 65. After performing an autopsy, the state medical examiner ruled her death a homicide - her cause of death was congestive heart failure exacerbated by pelvic fractures suffered when she was assaulted by Carr. sltrib.com

Santa Fe, NM: Scuffle over theft at Home Depot led to gunfire
Three people were arrested by Santa Fe police Tuesday afternoon and officers are seeking two others for questioning after an alleged shoplifting incident at the Home Depot led to a scuffle between a worker and a suspect and a bystander discharged a firearm. Deputy Chief Ben Valdez said in an email late Tuesday police had received a call around 4 p.m. about a fight at the store on Richards Avenue. Witnesses told police a loss prevention officer at the Home Depot had attempted to stop a theft, and the shoplifter pulled out an "electronic control weapon," the email said. An unidentified man with a gun witnessed the struggle and stepped in, Valdez said, and the man fired a single bullet into the ground during the chaos. No one was injured, and the shoplifter fled the scene in a vehicle, Valdez said. He said it was unclear why the bystander fired the gun. santafenewmexican.com

ReCAAP Reports Nine Incidents of Piracy And Armed Robbery Against Ships In Asia During October
In October 2020, nine incidents of armed robbery against ships were reported in Asia. No piracy incident was reported. With these incidents, the total number of incidents from January to October 2020 was 84 incidents, which represents an increase of 35% compared to the same period of 2019 (62 incidents). "Since January 2020, 31 incidents of armed robbery against ships have been reported in the Singapore Strait, of which 27 occurred in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme," said Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of the ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre. "In addition to asking the shipping community to exercise upmost vigilance, we also urge the littoral states concerned to take enforcement actions to apprehend the perpetrators--without which the spate of incidents is likely to continue. All incidents, however 'moderate,' should not be ignored because the lack of arrests can embolden criminals to escalate their crimes." hellenicshippingnews.com

Competition is a good thing because it's what has made America so strong. Whether it's competition between companies or between executives, it has a tendency to bring out the best in most people and in most organizations. It leads to innovation, invention, growth and it instills a sense of competition in everything we do that tends to motivate and challenge people to reach beyond their own self-definitions of what they can do or can't do. Without it, progress, which is slow to begin with, would be stifled but, with it, you have inspiration and purpose. The whole key is how you compete in the open market, whether as a company or as an executive, reflecting professional standards and a code of ethics is critical even when your competition isn't. The #1 rule should always be never speak ill of the competition because in actuality it's more of a reflection of who you are and not who they are.

Just a Thought,
Gus
