The "Customer Bill of Rights"
The one-page document, drafted by the Retail Council of New York State,
declares: “Profiling is an unacceptable practice and will not be tolerated.” It
says each store in question “is committed to ensuring that all shoppers, guests
and employees are treated with respect and dignity and are free from
unreasonable searches, profiling and discrimination of any kind,” and that the
stores will use “internal programs to test compliance with our strict
prohibition against profiling practices.” “Employees who violate the company’s
prohibition on profiling will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and
including termination of employment,” it adds. The “Customers’ Bill of Rights”
sign will also include phone numbers for the New York City Commission on Human
Rights, the state Division of Human Rights and the manager of each store in
which it’s hung. (Source

Retail Sales Climb Most Since June in November
U.S. retail sales rose solidly in November as Americans bought automobiles and a
range of other goods, adding to signs of a strengthening economy that could draw
the Federal Reserve closer to reducing the pace of monetary stimulus. The
Commerce Department said on Thursday retail sales increased 0.7 percent last
month after rising by a revised 0.6 percent in October. November's retail sales

FBI releases 2012 National Incident-Based Reporting System - 1,722,672
Larceny/Theft Offenses listed Created to improve the quantity and
quality of crime data collected by law enforcement, the FBI UCR Program’s
National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) captures more detailed
information for each single crime occurrence than the traditional Summary
Reporting System (SRS). When used to its full potential at the agency level, the
NIBRS identifies with precision when and where crime takes place, what form it
takes, and the characteristics of its victims and perpetrators. As more law
enforcement agencies (LEAs) submit their crime data via the NIBRS, they—along
with legislators, municipal planners and administrators, academicians,
researchers, and the general public—will be better able to assess the scope of
the nation’s crime problem. See the report at

VP Business Development
ProfitectI once worked for a man who owned a
regional supermarket chain which dominated the market we were in. He asked me
one day ‘what have you done for the company lately?’ To which I began to tell
him what I was doing for my boss. He quickly re-focused me back to his question
saying, “I don’t want to know what you are doing for Joe or even me but what are
you doing for ‘the company’”? I stumbled to a wobbly answer but the question has
never left me.
So, I ask you “what have you done for your company lately?”
We, you and I, are in the Asset Protection/Loss Prevention side of the company
but does that restrict what we’re doing for the company? If we just stick to our
‘internal and external fraud’ then our companies are missing a great deal from
our expertise.
As I walk the stores trying to evaluate issues to help me present what my
company does for our retail clients I notice a significant opportunity in almost
every store in the area of product availability and presentation. In
supermarkets it’s the effectiveness of reviewing/culling fresh, date coding,
percentage of trim in meat, use of misters and icing in appropriate departments,
maintenance of shelf tags and signage, staff presence and effectiveness, etc.
In specialty and fashion there are similarities, how is the product presented,
signed, what does the associate know about the products, is there ample
selection and is the selection effectively arranged and presented; is there
damaged product on the sales racks, tables, displays. How attentive is the
associate to my needs and the sales process.
I walk out of stores that have cluttered shelves and displays, obvious poor
product management and availability, lacking freshness maintenance, and of
course, missing and staff who don’t know their job or products.
What does that have to do with our side of the business?
Simple, I sell ‘profit’ to retailers and yet I see people on our side (AP/LP)
that will walk past poor and unacceptable conditions in the areas above which
caused YOUR COMPANY to LOSE SALES, LOSE CUSTOMERS. Isn’t that LOSS PREVENTION’S
CONCERN as much as fraud?
As a customer (perhaps an unusual type of customer) I care that my local
retailers are performing as well as they can. I talk to them, point out
conditions, reference areas of opportunity and my question to you is ‘where do
you draw the line on LOSS’?

Vancouver
police believe goods worth $250,000 were stolen for sale at illegal 'apartment
store' Police recovered around $250,000 in suspected stolen property
last week inside a Vancouver apartment that was operating as an “underground
retail sales centre." Officers went to an east Vancouver apartment building on
Dec. 7, acting on a tip from the anti-fencing unit that stolen property was
being sold there. Police said Wednesday the apartment was stocked with thousands
of items of suspected stolen merchandise, organized into different sections as
one would find at a legitimate retail store. There were racks of men’s and
women’s clothes, expensive, name-brand winter coats, designer jeans, and
high-end wallets, purses and sunglasses. A second room was dedicated to
children’s clothing. The apartment even included a changing room for customers
to try on articles of clothing. The illegal store, probably advertised by word
of mouth and online, was doing brisk business. Police observed dozens of
customers an hour passing through the property to shop, said patrol officer
Const. Brian Hobbs, who was at scene. Officers also saw people coming to the
apartment to drop off bags of suspected stolen merchandise to sell. more
organized kind of shoplifting seems to be especially prevalent the Vancouver
area, O’Keefe said — and it’s on the rise. "Organized crime for the purpose of
resale, I would say, is higher ...in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland,” O’Keefe
said. “Right now, it’s a little bit of a hotbed. It seems like it’s on the rise
this year. There’s been a lot more activity that police have identified, that
retailers have complained about in terms of some of the organized gangs out
there." (Source

adults, 2 teens - ORC ring arrested for stealing thousands from Gallatin, Tenn.,
Walmart Investigators say 37-year-old Jenny Andrews and her
31-year-old husband Christopher Andrews is the mastermind behind the shoplifting
ring. According to police, the Andrews dropped off the younger members of the
group, which included their 20-year-old daughter, two of her friends and two
minors, at the store and waited for them to return with cart loads of stolen
merchandise. Police said the group of shoplifters was ultimately identified by
surveillance video. Gallatin police are working to determine if the group is
suspects in other similar crimes. (Source

Two California male suspects hit Washington Square Mall in Portland, Ore., with
fake credit cards - may be connected to same west coast gang Two men
have been arrested for using counterfeit credit cards at Washington Square, the
third set of similar arrests in the past three months. Two suspects were
arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 4, after going on a shopping spree at Washington
Square mall and in Portland using fraudulent credit cards. Each case has
involved California residents in their 20s and 30s allegedly making thousands of
dollars worth of purchases at Washington Square mall using fake credit cards.
“The general public is not aware of how prevalent this is right now,” Wolf said.
“The use of counterfeit credit cards is plaguing the retail industry. But we
have been fortunate — with information sharing among law enforcement and
retailers. This is a great example of how those corroborations can work.” Wolf
said it’s unclear what has brought the increase in cases to Tigard. “That is a
question that law enforcement is unable to answer,” Wolf said. “We are not sure
why, all of a sudden, people are coming up from California on these shopping
sprees in the Northwest." (Source

15 Ways to Make Much Better Decisions
As a part of leading other people, you must be able to make decisions, but not
just that, you must make decisions that are good for everyone and the

your decision making skills could improve. (Start
with making space)
4 Things All Decision-Makers Want
When we really think about it, there are four things that all decision-makers
want from other people. They don't have a lot of time to spend doing research
about what the best decision is, so if you can follow these four guidelines,
you're off to a good start. (Convenience)

The Secret to Changing Your Habits
We all have some bad habits, but there is a key to turning them into better
habits. You have to start very, very small; the smaller the habit, the easier it
is to change it or establish it. It won't feel like you're doing it
automatically for about two months! (Do
a little bit, every day)
You will Help Your Employees Cope with Change in 2014 Nothing stays
the same forever, and with a new year just weeks away, help your team go with
the flow on whatever changes are coming up. Use these tips to help your

Self-reflection is something many avoid or refuse to allow it to creep up and
point to exactly what you need to look at. Hidden behind rationalizations, self
reflection in actuality can be an eye opening experience. Popping up when you
least expect it but most notably late at night when you're staring at the
ceiling with no other outside interferences lending you license to deny it.
Self-reflection is the one person you should make it a point to face. It just
might make a difference tomorrow.
Just a Thought,
Gus Downing
