Tear Gas, Automatic Weapons, Molotov Cocktails

St. Louis Suburb Looks Like a War Zone as Protests Turn Violent

Police use smoke bombs and tear gas on protesters

Protests turn violent in St. Louis suburb - More Tear gas - shots fired - Molotov cocktails thrown at police overnight  Police used tear gas and smoke bombs to repel crowds who threw Molotov cocktails during another violent night on the streets of a St. Louis suburb in the wake of the shooting of the unarmed 18-year old Michael Brown. Instead, officers from multiple departments in riot gear and in military equipment have clashed nightly with protesters, who chant, "Hands up, don't shoot." Wednesday saw more tense confrontations and further volleys of tear gas from police — this time paired with smoke bombs in response to flaming projectiles and other objects lobbed from the crowd. Protesters faced heavily armed police who at times trained weapons on them from armored trucks. Two reporters said they were detained by police for not clearing out quickly enough from a McDonald's where they were working, near the protests but away from the more volatile areas. The two, who work for The Washington Post and The Huffington Post, were released without any charges. Both say they were assaulted but not seriously hurt. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that about 10 people had been arrested, including St. Louis Alderman Antonio French, who has been chronicling the protests on social media. Police had said earlier they would not have arrest information until early Thursday.  (Source yahoo.com)

Sonic cannons - armored vehicle - high-caliber automatic weapons on tripods trained on the crowd - tear gas shot  The animosity for the most part was verbal Wednesday until a thrown bottle prompted police to fire smoke bombs at the crowd shortly before 9 p.m. Police a short time later chased protesters into nearby neighborhoods after dispersing the crowd for the third straight night with tear gas grenades. On Wednesday, police also used piercing-sound sonic cannons to scatter the crowd.  As they have since Saturday, demonstrators throughout the evening taunted and threatened police. A county police tactical operations armored vehicle was deployed at the demonstration site for most of the night. As of midnight there were reports of sporadic gunfire. At 2 a.m., several dozen police officers riding inside and on three armored tactical vehicles pulled up in front of the Ferguson police station. Forming a skirmish line, they faced the last of the night's protesters, a group of about 100 gathered across the street on the parking lot of the Andy Wurm Tire & Wheel shop. A booming voice from a police loudspeaker ordered the crowd to disperse and the protestors complied after cursing them. (Source stltoday.com)

Police release video of Shoe Carnival store looting & gas station that was hit
St. Louis police have released video of the looting of the Shoe Carnival store in a shopping center on Gravois Avenue in St. Louis shortly before midnight Monday. The 52-second video shows numerous people grabbing merchandise from inside the store at 3503 Bamberger Avenue. The group entered after someone smashed out a business window. Police said they do not believe the looting was the direct result of the unrest in Ferguson but said "we do recognize that criminals are using the opportunity to commit crime in the city." St. Louis police also are investigating a break-in at a Phillips 66 gas station and convenience store in Lafayette Square early Tuesday. (Source stltoday.com)

Anonymous also released on Wednesday what it said were county 911 tapes from the time of the shooting on Saturday. Most initial calls seemed to be about crowd control, but the tapes also suggested that dispatchers learned from an early call that a police officer was involved. Chief Jackson said he had not heard the tapes. (Source nytimes.com)
