U.K.’s Asda tries data analytics to counter shoplifting and ORC
Shoplifting is retail’s eternal headache. According to NRF’s National Retail Security Survey, there were losses of nearly $47 billion in the United States alone in 2017. It’s a dilemma: The easier products are to access in stores and the more seamless the checkout experience, the greater the conditions for theft.

While putting high-value items like baby formula in locked cabinets may not be convenient for consumers, some retailers choose that rather than see thefts increase. Companies have tried countless methods to counter shoplifting — increased and better trained security staff, hidden cameras, electronic article surveillance — but these can only do so much. That’s where big data comes into play.

With nearly 650 locations, U.K. supermarket chain and Walmart subsidiary Asda has tried to be at the forefront of loss prevention. In 2017 it worked with Tyco Retail Solutions to roll out Tyco’s Shrink Management as a Service technology in its EAS systems.

“If you look at a traditional EAS system, merchandise is tagged with a sensor that’s removed at the purchase. If someone walks out the door with the sensor attached, it sets off an alarm,” says Sean Lee, U.K. retail director for Tyco Retail Solutions. “With SMaaS there’s a capability to collect data about these alarm triggers, which allows a retailer to see trends and act accordingly.” stores.org

NEW PODCAST: A Good 2018 and a Bright 2019 for Retail
Featuring Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer

Tony D’Onofrio, CEO of TD Insights, says that retail had a very good year in 2018, especially during the holiday season. He says the department stores struggled through the holiday season, but the rest of retail did extremely well. “2019 will be the year 73 million Millennials will overtake the 72 million Baby Boomers, which was the largest generation,” D’Onofrio says. “and I think that’s a major opportunity for retailers going forward.”

D’Onofrio says that Millennials want experiences more personalized and brands that understand their unique needs, and brands that take advantage of that will succeed. He also says that connectivity with smart phones is going to be more important going forward, especially connecting them to physical stores to create unique personal experiences and even eliminating cashiers. D'Onofrio also discusses the new technologies in Nike's House of Innovation physical retail store and why this model will appeal to millennials. Overall, he is bullish about the future of retail, both because of the booming economy and because of the disruptive innovations already working their creative destruction magic. marketscale.com

Report: Global Commercial Security Market to Reach $187 Billion by 2023
The global commercial security market is anticipated to experience a CAGR of 10% from 2019 to 2023, reaching a size of $187 billion by 2023, as per the latest report by Market Research Future.

Security concerns among large, mid, and small enterprises is the primary driver of the commercial security market. Increasing adoption of technology-driven solutions such as CCTV cameras and analytics are likely to bolster market demand over the forecast period. High risk of theft and need to ensure safety to employees are other factors which can play a major role in the market.

Access control systems are being installed in malls, shopping centers, and other buildings to ensure the safety of employees. Detection and response approaches integrated into company policies to tackle untoward incidents can offer an opportunity for the commercial security market to expand successfully. marketwatch.com

The Consumer's Role In Battling Fraud
"We even saw the 'going out of business' spike in counterfeit fraud that was anticipated, where fraudsters tried to squeeze that last little bit of momentum before the EMV shift occurred," Moorer said. "Then it died down and shifted to CNP fraud, which today is becoming an increasingly large portion of all card fraud."

And the problem, he added, is likely going to get worse before it gets better, as more and more sensitive consumer data finds its way into the hands of bad actors. Which means the future of fighting CNP fraud will depend on two things: first, helping consumers become their own best data security advocates, and second, introducing stronger, more context-specific fraud prevention tools.

The Consumer As A Frontline Against Fraud

The bad guys, Moorer noted, have data - and lots of it. So much, in fact, that stealing a card or a card number isn't even required to commit fraud at this point.

"Today, a fraudster can apply for an account, get it automatically approved and spend the entire credit line associated with it in less than two minutes - before the issuer has even sent out a plastic card," he pointed out.

Or for the particularly precise, there's always footprint fraud, where a cyber thief uses what they know about a customer's spending habits to keep their fraudulent transactions within that pattern so as not to set off any alarm bells.

And while there are a variety of technological tools designed to make those fraud attempts more obvious - particularly modern rules engines and artificial intelligence - perhaps one of the most overlooked tools in the battle against fraud in a CNP world are the customers themselves. pymnts.com

Processing Chargebacks in a Card-less Society
New payment methods present plenty of opportunities for fraud. As it stands, when a consumer initiates a dispute, the issuer and merchant don’t actually work together to determine the origin of the dispute, leaving each at a significant disadvantage. But data gives them an opportunity to prevent fraud and unnecessary chargebacks, if critical merchant data can be shared between merchant and issuer.

For example, issuers can implement automated solutions which facilitate the sharing of data, such as transactional data from a merchant’s CRM system, or push notifications to merchants to review and resolve disputes faster. And just as machine learning and AI have given rise to new payment methods, so too can they be used in authenticating payments, either through biometrics or behavioural analytics.

But all this technology used to cope with a card-less society will be redundant if the data derived from it cannot be shared with all stakeholders involved in processing a payment to help determine whether the transaction is actual fraud or friendly fraud. finextra.com

Credit cards have become consumers preferred payment source
Americans love credit cards — particularly when shopping in stores. That’s according to a report from Mercator Advisory Group which found that, when consumers were asked to choose their single most preferred payment type in stores, 36% said they preferred credit cards, followed by debit cards (33%) and cash (18%). Three percent said they preferred private-label revolving store cards, and 2% preferred checks.

Debit cards, however, are often preferred for small purchases and everyday in-store spending such as groceries. chainstoreage.com

Sears liquidation threat looms:
Retailer gets extra day to negotiate lifesaving deal

Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart, will give its chairman and largest investor Eddie Lampert another day to come up with a feasible offer to keep a shrunken version of the company alive, bankruptcy attorney Ray Schrock told a federal judge Tuesday.

Without a deal, liquidation appears imminent. It could even proceed within weeks. That would mean the two chains could soon join the graveyard of deceased American retailers.

Still, the company's assets will be auctioned off Monday, January 14. If Lampert hedge fund ESL Investments can't come up with a $120 million deposit and new deal terms by 4 p.m. Wednesday, liquidators will probably prevail and the company will likely go out of business. usatoday.com

Security Industry Trends To Be Led By Focus On Cyber Security In 2019
The Security Industry Association (SIA) looks forward to 2019, and it is apparent that physical security is moving into its most formative years. Changes presented by emerging technology, open systems and growing connectivity among devices and sensors will make a big difference for manufacturers, systems integrators/dealers and end users.

With a more open, connected environment comes cyber risk and data privacy concerns – which is why, in SIA’s 2019 Security Megatrends, cybersecurity’s impact on the physical security industry ranks number one on the list. Cybersecurity is affecting all areas of the industry landscape, from security implementation to attracting top talent to the workforce.

The digital transformation we are experiencing impacts many other parts of the security industry as well, bringing opportunities like evolving identity management and collecting and delivering big data to customers. At this critical point in the industry’s development, it is important to embrace change, leverage disruptive technology in ways that give companies a competitive advantage.

This Year’s Security Megatrends

1. Cybersecurity’s Impact on Physical Security: It is important to prioritise cybersecurity for your business, your customers’ business and the vendors with which you work. This trend calls for continual process improvement and investment.

2. Internet of Things (IoT) and the Big Data Effect: The security industry makes use of IoT, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and more, and data is coming from everywhere. The industry now faces the challenge of effectively managing and segmenting this information to be pertinent to the user.

3. Cloud Computing: Cloud platforms and applications are becoming prevalent across security solutions. This technology helps security integrators provide managed services and the advantages of off-site systems and services to customers.

4. Workforce Development: With historically low unemployment, finding skilled employees is a challenge to the whole security industry. Security stakeholders need talent with IT, cybersecurity, AI and even privacy expertise, presenting a need to grow students’ interest in the industry.

5. AI: Research firm Gartner predicts a new “democratisation of AI” that will impact more organisations than ever before. Companies are now testing this technology before offering it to customers and exploring how AI data can be used to improve security threat assessment and response.

How Neiman Marcus Uses AI To Fight Fraudsters
As online shopping becomes the norm for the modern customer, more luxury retailers are pairing their traditional brick-and-mortar stores — designed to show off the height of luxury — with a just-as-luxurious online presence to match. While this can provide luxury brands with a bump in sales, fraudsters are taking full advantage to hit luxury retailers everywhere they can: online and in-store.

That’s why luxury retailers need to stay on their toes, according to Chief Information Security Officer Shamoun Siddiqui and Director of Security Architecture Kyle Ciborowski of Neiman Marcus. In a recent interview with PYMNTS, Siddiqui and Ciborowski discussed the ways in which Neiman Marcus has upgraded its security measures to keep fraudsters at bay, all while maintaining a seamless customer experience — a feat that’s grown increasingly difficult as fraudsters start to use technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to bypass a retailer’s defenses.

“Luxury retailers typically operate in a ‘high-tough’ environment, designed to be as friction-free for the customer as possible,” Siddiqui said. “Any measure of security introduces friction. So, the challenge is to make security as transparent as possible while still protecting the customer’s personal information.” pymnts.com

The FBI is Trying Amazon’s Facial-Recognition Software
3 Weeks of FBI Data Investigation Can Now Be Done in 24 Hours

The FBI is piloting Amazon’s facial matching software - Amazon Rekognition - as a means to sift through mountains of video surveillance footage the agency routinely collects during investigations.

The pilot kicked off in early 2018 following a string of high-profile counterterrorism investigations that tested the limits of the FBI’s technological capabilities, according to FBI officials.

For example, in the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas carried out by Stephen Paddock, the law enforcement agency collected a petabyte worth of data, much of it video from cellphones and surveillance cameras.

FBI Deputy Assistant Director for Counterterrorism Christine Halvorsen said Amazon Rekognition could have gone through the same trove of data from the Las Vegas shooting “in 24 hours” - or three weeks faster than it took human FBI agents to find every instance of Paddock’s face in the mountain of video. biometricupdate.com

The 7 Types of Ecommerce Fraud Schemes You Should Know About
Receiving even one chargeback hurts. Below are the top seven fraud schemes to be aware of to prevent the next fraud attack on your website:

1. Classic fraud.
This type of fraud is generally committed by unsophisticated fraudsters. Stolen credit card credentials are purchased on the dark web, and goods are sent to reshippers in an attempt to retrieve the stolen merchandise. Often, internet proxies are used to mask the international IP where a majority of this type of fraud originates.

2. Triangulation fraud.
An online storefront is created by the fraudster, often on eBay or Amazon, that offers high-demand goods at extremely low prices. The store collects payment for the goods it sells. The fraudster then uses other stolen credit card data and the names collected in orders on his online storefront to purchase goods from a legitimate website and ships them to the customers that purchased on his new online storefront.

3. Interception fraud.
Fraudsters will create orders where the billing and shipping match the address linked to the card. Their goal is to intercept the package in any of the following ways:

● Asking a customer service rep to change the address on the order before shipment.
● Contacting the shipper to reroute the package to an address where they can retrieve the stolen goods.
● In cases where the fraudster lives in close proximity to the cardholder’s billing address, physically wait near the address for the delivery to arrive and offer to sign for the package as the homeowner is not available.

4. Card testing fraud.
This is the practice of testing the validity of a credit card number, with plans to use valid credentials at another website to commit fraud. Fraudsters target websites that reveal a different response for each type of decline.

5. Account takeover fraud.
This occurs when fraudsters get hold of a legitimate customer’s login credentials and take advantage of stored credit cards to purchase goods. An update on the shipping address will usually occur shortly before purchase so the fraudster can retrieve the stolen goods.

6. Fraud via identity theft.
In this case, the fraudsters assumes another person’s identity, creates credit cards in the victim’s name and goes on a shopping spree. This type of fraud is increasing rapidly as the number and scope of data breaches increase. It is also the most difficult to identify as the fraudsters behind identity theft are quite sophisticated.

7. Friendly fraud, also called chargeback fraud.
An online shopper will make a purchase, then issue a chargeback, claiming their card was stolen. The chargeback usually occurs after the goods are delivered. This type of fraud is traditionally not carried out by hardcore criminals but rather by consumers who are clearly aware of what they are doing. This type of fraud is difficult to detect but can often be won via chargeback representing. entrepreneur.com

Tip of the Day

Being in a slump is an absolutely scary place where your brain does more damage than your actions or lack thereof. More mental than anything else, a slump happens to all of us, and getting out of it can look like the longest darkest tunnel you've ever experienced. But remember there's always light at the end of every tunnel and getting focused on that light is the key. And turning it always begins with getting back to basics. Forcing yourself to find that focus and using the basics to get out of the slump is the only way out. Lean on your basics and trust you know them well enough that the old performance will start showing itself, because once they do, you'll find yourself having fun and out of that slump.

Just a Thought,
Gus
