We’ve revamped our research strategy to only ask you to take one survey a year, instead of two. Security Industry Association Selects Axis Communications as 2018 Member of the Year

Axis will be honored at The Advance 2019 for its impressive leadership efforts, engagement in SIA programs and contributions to the security industry.

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has announced Axis Communications as the recipient of the inaugural Member of the Year Award, which honors SIA member companies that have shown noteworthy involvement in SIA committees and working groups, SIA events and the SIA Education@ISC conference program; leadership activity; recruitment of SIA members; and contributions to SIA thought leadership and the industry overall. The DOL’s New 2019 Overtime Proposal:
What It Means for Retail Employers

On March 7, 2019, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) unveiled its new overtime proposal notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM), which would update the salary threshold according to which workers are entitled to overtime compensation. According to the proposal, the new salary level will increase from $455 per week (which amounts to $23,660 annually) to $679 per week (which amounts to $35,308 annually). If the proposal becomes final, this would be the first increase to the salary level since 2004.

The proposed changes are expected to have a substantial impact on retail employers. Among other things, retail employers fear that more managers might lose their exempt status in favor of hourly pay under the new rules. Negative employee morale may result from reclassifying managers as nonexempt, which would require that they start tracking their time and meal breaks. The new proposal likely will also have an impact on company policies, including a number of policies that apply only to exempt managers, such as the ability to work from home and the ability to access email remotely. City Furniture finds a seamless way to prevent credit card fraud
With credit card companies no longer requiring signatures to approve transactions and refusing to enable the use of personal identification numbers with their new chip cards, retailers are increasingly looking for ways to determine whether the customer with a card in their hand is the legitimate cardholder.

Identification authentication company Intellicheck has a solution that some retailers say is helping address the problem.

City Furniture began using Intellicheck’s Retail ID system - which allows a driver’s license to be quickly scanned and checked against a proprietary database - last year. Before that, store managers “did not have any good way of validating whether the customer was who they said they were,” says Garry Ikola, chief sales officer of the Tamarac, Fla.-based retailer.

Today, the Retail ID Mobile application is live in 29 City Furniture Florida showroom stores on the east and west coasts. In addition to its own stores, City Furniture is a licensee of 12 Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations.

“Customers love it,” Ikola says, “and so do our managers because for the first time we have an easy-to-use standardized process for verifying that customers are who they say they are.” He says he instantly liked its simplicity and ease of use.

City Furniture is one of 45 retail companies currently using the application in about 11,000 stores. In the eight months that City Furniture has been using the Retail ID Mobile version on iPads, it has cut identity fraud losses by more than 33 percent without “slowing down sales transactions,” Ikola says, and while reassuring customers that their identities are protected. stores.org

IT Leaders, Employees Divided on Data Security
Management and employees have dramatically different views of how risky employee behavior can be. According to the results of a new security survey released today, that gap puts enterprise data in grave danger.

More than three-quarters of the executives believe employees have accidentally put company data at risk in the past year. When employees answered the same question, 92% said they had not done anything to put data at risk.

When it comes to intentional breaches, the division is no less stark. Sixty-one percent of IT leaders said employees have maliciously put company data at risk, while 91% of employees said they've done no such thing. This kind of divide – in which employees are unaware of, or unwilling to admit their roles in, data loss – poses a particular challenge to IT leaders trying to educated their employees about good security practices.

Most UK Retailers See Increase in Cyber-Attacks
The majority of UK retailers are seeing an increase in cyber-attacks, prompting them to spend more on security, according to the latest survey from the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Supreme Court rejects appeal from shoe retailer Zappos in data breach case, allowing class-action lawsuit of 24M customers to move forward
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from Amazon's online shoe retailer Zappos, a move that will allow a class-action lawsuit over a hack that exposed the personal data of 24 million customers to move forward.

Zappos was seeking to appeal a ruling by a San Francisco-based appeals court that said the lawsuit should continue because the 2012 data breach left customers vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.

Supply-Chain Attack Used to Install Backdoors on ASUS Computers
Over 1 million ASUS users may have been impacted after attackers managed to inject a backdoor in the ASUS Live Update utility, Kaspersky Lab reports. Pre-installed on most ASUS computers, ASUS Live Update is used to automatically update components such as BIOS, UEFI, drivers and applications. To hide the malicious activity, the actors also used a stolen digital certificate that ASUS signs legitimate binaries with.

McDonald's adds tech to the menu with $300 million AI acquisition
McDonald’s is embracing machine learning with the acquisition of Dynamic Yield, an Israeli startup that provides algorithmically driven "decision logic" tech for retailers. Putting A Dent In The $1.5T Counterfeit Goods Business
In the U.S. and worldwide, counterfeiting is a large, lucrative business worth between $1.2 trillion and $1.5 trillion annually, according to the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC). Fake fashion items and accessories alone represent a $500 billion global business per year, but counterfeiting is much bigger than fake purses and shoes.

Everything from makeup to clothes, prescription drugs to household cleaning products and electronics to baby formula has a counterfeit variation that is doubtlessly being sold online right now. In addition, the instances of it are going up every year, not down, John Verdeschi, group head and senior vice president of customer performance integrity at Mastercard Worldwide told Karen Webster.

“There is no doubt, as eCommerce grows and all of these products are more accessible than ever before, consumers are ever-more likely to encounter counterfeiters across these channels,” he said. “For us, [that’s why] it was important to take a stand here, and make sure consumers can have a good experience while they are shopping online.”

It’s also why being able to announce a win in the ongoing trillion dollar-plus struggle with global counterfeiting, as Mastercard and the IACC are doing this week, is particularly satisfying.

iOffer, a popular online consumer marketplace, has a reputation for being the kind of place where a consumer can buy anything. Unfortunately, according to Bob Barchiesi, president of the IACC, since “anything” often includes counterfeit goods, iOffer has been a “tremendous point of frustration for brands and the [intellectual property (IP)] community.”

“We hope iOffer will take this opportunity to protect [its] customers by building systems and processes to mitigate against fakes on [its] site,” Barchiesi said.

E-commerce forecast to rise to 24% of card spending

Cardholders moving away from physical outlets in search of lower prices and convenience
Research from RBR analyses the role that payment cards are playing in the e-commerce sector and the impact growth in e-commerce is having on use of cards in traditional outlets. According to Global Payment Cards Data and Forecasts to 2023, e-commerce expenditure amounted to US$ 4.5 trillion in 2017, up 13% since 2016. The main drivers of this growth are increased convenience when compared to buying from bricks and mortar outlets and, in some cases, lower prices.

Ongoing migration to digital channels and increased smartphone penetration drive growth
RBR forecasts that e-commerce expenditure will increase to US$ 11 trillion in 2023. Daniel Dawson, who led RBR’s research project, said: “As consumers increasingly migrate from physical outlets to digital channels, smartphone ownership rises further and mobile payment apps become more and more sophisticated, e-commerce will see significant further growth”. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) show violent and property crimes in Huber Heights mostly dropped from 2015 through 2017, but in 2018 the city had two homicides and a rise in theft cases from 782 a year before to 1,087. In 2016, the theft number was 1,003. “Dating back several years ago when the opioid use started to increase, our thefts went up, shoplifters, things like that,” Huber Heights police Chief Mark Lightner said. “But that’s been for several years now, and we continue to deal with that.” Lightner said his department works with loss prevention employees in stores to help solve cases and book shoplifters into jail. daytondailynews.com

Seattle, WA: Bartell Drugs CEO says it will not open any more stores in downtown Seattle after violent assaults on employees
The CEO of Bartell Drugs Kathi Lentzsch has been in her role for about year. She moved from San Francisco to take the job in Seattle, and frankly she says she is surprised over the number of incidents and the violence she is seeing in Seattle. Surveillance videos inside Bartell Drugs have captured countless shoplifting cases. In one incident, video shows a man in one aisle quickly running off with up to $700 worth of skincare products.

“We've had too many cases of employees ending up in the hospital or with very serious issues,” Lentzsch said. Multiple employees have been rushed to the hospital because of violent assaults. Sometimes it’s shoplifting that escalates to assaults or just unprovoked attacks. The situation is concerning enough that the company is rethinking their future in the downtown core of Seattle. q13fox.com

Detroit, MI: Detroit vs Everybody clothing store targeted in $60,000 Burglary
It's Detroit vs Everybody vs. a trio of thieves after some bandits broke into the store in Eastern Market this weekend. The popular clothing brand has become the preferred brand for thieves. They've experienced two major break-ins in just two weeks. Looking at all the damage to his back door, Detroit vs Everybody owner Tommey Walker says he felt betrayed and disheartened. "We have been terrorized, victimized. It seems we've been targeted," he said. fox2detroit.com

Huntersville, NC: K-9 officer helps catch suspect after $6,000 Victoria's Secret lingerie heist
Four men stole $6,000 worth of merchandise over the weekend from a Victoria's Secret store in the Charlotte area, according to police. Investigators said 3 of the suspects ran off with the merchandise and hopped into a vehicle outside the Birkdale Village shopping center in Huntersville. Officers caught the men after pulling them over on a nearby highway. Two of the four suspects ran from the vehicle but a K-9 officer tracked one of the running suspects down. The other was able to escape. Investigators recovered all $6,000 worth of stolen lingerie. The search continues for the fourth man who escaped. abc13.com

Woman wanted for $1,600 ORC Theft from Acme Stores in Delaware
New Jersey State Police and Delaware State Police are both looking for a Cumberland County woman wanted in connection with a number of thefts from Acme stores in Delaware. New Jersey State Police say Shaquan D. King, 30, of Bridgeton is wanted in relation to organized retail theft. Police say King "and another female suspect allegedly stole more than $1,600 worth of over-the-counter medication from various Acme locations in Delaware." catcountry1073.com

Amsterdam, NY: Group of 6 stole $700 in OTC drugs from Hannaford Brothers Grocery
Montgomery County sheriff's deputies say they caught a group that stole hundreds of dollars' worth of drugs from the Hannaford in Amsterdam. They say a call came around 7:20 Sunday night for a larceny in progress. A patrol car pulled over the suspected vehicle on Route 30. They say they found about $700 worth of over-the-counter medication taken from the grocery store. All six suspects were inside. wnyt.com

Cherryvale, KS: Grocery store employee shoots
co-worker, then turns the gun on himself

Just after 3:30 Monday afternoon, authorities were called to G&W Grocery Store in Cherryvale. When they got there they were told a man with a gun was holding a coworker in an office in the store. They immediately evacuated the building. Soon after, they heard gunshots from the office. As they entered the room, authorities witnessed the suspect, 39, shoot himself. Police also found his coworker, 28, with gunshot wounds. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, then flown to a Tulsa hospital where he later died. The victim’s condition at this time is unknown. ksn.com

Charlotte, NC: Deadly Police shooting at NC Burger King; fight between employees over a woman
Police have identified the man who was shot and killed in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in north Charlotte Monday morning. Danquirs Franklin, 27, was identified as the “armed man” who police fatally shot after a “lethal threat” was perceived, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police released two 911 calls made from witnesses at the Burger King about an armed man Monday afternoon.

Police say when they arrived after receiving the 911 calls, they engaged the man in the parking lot and “repeatedly ordered him to drop his gun.” A 911 caller told police the man reached into his pants, possibly going for a weapon, as he approached her car. The caller told the dispatcher she drove away from the restaurant and believed the man went back inside the store. The woman told the 911 dispatcher she saw people around the Burger King drive off at that point and employees of the store running. A police source says that Franklin was upset that the mother of his children was dating another employee. The source says the man pushed the female employee to the ground before chasing and pointing a gun at a male employee. cbs17.com

Clay County, FL: Mother accused of shoplifting dies in Clay County jail cell
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a local mother died in a Clay County jail cell. Monday would have been Michelle Bewley’s 36th birthday. Instead, her husband and daughter are mourning her. On Jan. 3, Bewley and another woman were accused of taking $632.28 worth of jewelry, makeup and clothes into the same fitting room and concealing the items in their purses. Bewley was accused of shoplifting at a Belk department store in Orange Park. They were stopped by loss prevention when they left the store and later arrested. That report also said Bewley gave the responding deputy a fake name. Clerk of court records show Bewley bonded out a few days later, but her bondsman brought her back on March 4. It’s not clear why. On March 5, a Sheriff’s Office incident report said Bewley was “found unresponsive” in her jail cell. Fire rescue pronounced Bewley dead that night. Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement is now investigating her death. actionnewsjax.com

A man who police said was trying to rob an Eastern Carolina sweepstakes and vape business was shot and killed by an employee. Washington police said they were called to Player's Vape on U.S. 264 West around 12:15 a.m. Monday for an armed robbery and shots fired call. Inside, police found the attempted robber had been shot by an employee of the business who has a concealed weapons permit. witn.com

Las Cruces, NM: Dillard’s employee stabbed during an Apprehension
Suspect taken down with Bean-Bag rounds from Police

The man suspected of stabbing a Dillard's employee while allegedly attempting to shoplift from the Mesilla Valley Mall Saturday night remains hospitalized in El Paso according to Las Cruces Police. According to investigators, the 31-year-old man was suspected of shoplifting from Dillard's, he then allegedly assaulted several employees and stabbed one as he attempted to run from the mall. After ignoring several commands, police deployed bean-bag and taser rounds on the suspect. The stabbing victim was taken to a local Las Cruces hospital where he was treated and released. ktsm.com

Hesperia, CA: Walmart Associate arrested for starting fires inside the store to avoid work
A California Walmart employee started fires in the bathrooms and infant clothing department of a store on Sunday night to get out of work, local law enforcement has claimed. Loss Prevention officials identified and detained Kevin Jermaine Smith, 24, after watching surveillance footage. The employee allegedly started fires inside the store, as well as near a Pieology restaurant. Smith told authorities he started the fires to get out of work. The employee was due on shift later that night. A police deputy found Smith near the parking lot of a Jack in the Box, authorities arrested him and booked him according to state arson laws. newsweek.com

Why are we so risk averse? Forbes explains that, usually, we overestimate the possibility of something going wrong. We think about the losses more than the potential gains. Usually, however, the risk of something not going well is not as high as we think it is, and the odds of something going well are actually higher. Similarly, we often exaggerate the consequences of what may occur if something does go wrong. We always think about the worst-case scenario. In reality, if something does go wrong, we will take action to correct it-not sit idly by as our lives crumble around us. We have to remind ourselves that we are able to handle the consequences of risk. You can face that challenge, no matter what it is, so long as you believe you can.

To overcome this hurdle, ask yourself three questions: What would I do if I were being more courageous? How will inaction cost me a year from now if I do nothing? Where is my fear of failure causing me to overestimate the size of risk, underestimate myself and holding me back from taking risks that could serve me?

Anyway even if you lose, it may be worth it, because you never really grow without until you learn how to lose.
