#MeToo Called for an Overhaul. Are Workplaces Really Changing?
Women have spoken. Men have fallen. Corporations are nervous. But are American workplaces making real progress in curbing sexual harassment?

Five months after allegations against Harvey Weinstein led to the mass baring of past secrets, the focus is turning to the future. Government is stepping up efforts: In Washington, the House of Representatives is preparing to train every worker, down to the most junior intern, and state legislators across the country are proposing ambitious new laws. Corporate boards and investors from Wall Street to Silicon Valley are going on the offensive, probing for problems to avoid being surprised. Entrepreneurs are developing apps and programs to help victims discover if their harassers have targeted others. Women in entertainment, advertising and other industries are demanding fundamental shifts, including more females in leadership roles.

The #MeToo moment has shifted social attitudes, inspired widespread calls for change and resulted in unprecedented accountability. But the revelations about the pervasiveness of harassment — and of the legal and institutional failures to address it — illuminate how tough it will be to extinguish. shrm.org

Putin Says Deadly Mall Fire Due To 'Criminal Negligence'
Thousands in Russian city rally after shopping mall fire
Guard Turned Off Alarm - Fire Exits Blocked

Thousands of angry residents are rallying in the Russian city of Kemerovo to demand a full probe following a fire in a shopping mall that killed at least 64 people, many of them children.

NPR's Lucian Kim reports from Moscow that many of the city's residents believe that the authorities are lying about the death toll — that it is actually much higher than reported.

The blaze engulfed the Winter Cherry mall in Kemerovo on Sunday, the first weekend of the school recess, trapping dozens of parents and children. Eyewitnesses reported that fire alarms were silent and many doors were locked.

Some were quick to blame lax regulations on Russia’s fire safety inspection authorities, who have been accused of taking bribes to turn a blind eye to breaches.

Investigators said fire exits were blocked and the fire alarm system was switched off by a security guard shortly after the fire broke out.

Four people were arrested and questioned by police on Monday, including the head of the company responsible for servicing the fire alarm system and the technical director of the company that owned the shopping centre.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who made a surprise visit to the city, blamed the deaths on Sunday on "criminal negligence, sloppiness."

The Times writes that Russian media outlets were considering three theories as to how the fire started – an electrical short-circuit, arson by teenagers or "an accident involving candles lit during a children's birthday party." usatoday.com telegraph.co.uk npr.org

4 Trends Driving Security Operations Centers
How the SOC Creates Customer Confidence
The Security Operations Center Gains Prominence

A key factor in establishing trust is the presence of a Security Operations Center (SOC). This is true whether the SOC functions internally or is provided by a third party, such as a managed security service provider (MSSP).

This team monitors, detects, investigates and responds to cyber threats around the clock. The SOC is charged with monitoring and protecting many assets, such as intellectual property, personnel data, business systems and brand integrity. This includes the connected controls found in networked industrial equipment. The SOC assumes overall responsibility for monitoring, assessing and defending against cyberattacks.

SOCs have grown in importance due to four primary trending needs:

Departmental collaboration: It’s more important than ever that organizations maintain an environment where skilled people with the right tools can react quickly and collaborate to remediate system-wide as well as local problems.

Cross-functional collaboration: People and cybersecurity tools must work together with other critical IT functions and business operations. These departments align with business objectives and compliance needs for a high-performing operation that is efficient and effective.

Company-wide coordination and communication: As a security event takes place, it’s essential that there’s a centralized team to communicate with the rest of the organization and ensure efficient resolution. In turn, it’s also important that the organization knows who to turn to in the event of an incident.

A holistic view: A view of all digital assets and processes that is centralized and real-time makes it possible to detect and fix problems whenever and wherever they occur. Centralization is critical for IoT systems. The sheer number of devices and the likelihood that they are widely dispersed make local monitoring impractical and inconsistent.

As security operations have changed, the associated job roles and responsibilities have evolved as well. Having the right team with the right skills in place is essential to optimizing an organization’s front-line defense. securitymagazine.com

Inside the 2003 Kidnapping of Sears CEO Eddie Lampert
At 7:30 P.M., on January 10, 2003, the Friday before the week during which the finishing touches were to be put on the Kmart reorganization, Lampert went to get his car in the garage of his Greenwich office building. Suddenly he was shoved into the backseat of a rented black Ford Expedition sport-utility vehicle and driven, blindfolded and handcuffed, to a Days Inn, 55 miles away in Hamden, Connecticut. Four young men held him hostage for the next 28 hours in a $49-a-night room. They told him that unnamed AutoZone officials had offered to pay them $3 million to murder him, and they taunted him with a shotgun. On Saturday morning, two of the kidnappers used Lampert’s credit card to go on an $800 shopping spree for electronics equipment.

Lampert and two of the kidnappers, who had stayed behind at the Days Inn to guard him, settled on a $5 million payoff. On Sunday, at around two A.M., one of the kidnappers drove him back to Greenwich and let him out on a highway off-ramp to get the money, according to published reports. Why they would have made such a stupid move has not been answered until now. Tracing the stolen-credit-card transactions (the kidnappers had also purchased a pizza with one), police arrested four local men soon thereafter: Renaldo Rose, a 24-year-old ex-Marine; Shemone Gordon, 23; Devon Harris, 19; and Lorenzo Jones, 17.

In the years since, Lampert has not talked publicly about the kidnapping, nor have the more puzzling aspects of the case been cleared up. When I asked him about it, he frowned. “You’re not going there, are you?” he says. “I don’t really want to talk a lot about it for a lot of reasons, but I know it’s not an unimportant event.” All he’ll say is that the experience was “not good” and “they could have made a different decision—let’s put it that way.” Did it change your life? I asked him. “Yeah, yeah,” he says. “I’m just not comfortable talking about it.”

Renaldo Rose, the ringleader who was sentenced to 15 years in prison but released early in July 2016, dismisses the idea of the AutoZone executives offering $3 million for Lampert’s murder as the fabrication of one of his cohorts. But he recalls an intriguing exchange that he says took place between Gordon and Lampert:

“I heard Eddie. I heard some of the discussions, because there was even a discussion when it came to him buying Kmart. He was asking questions such as ‘When I get out of here, do you think I should do it?’ . . . He said he felt that Kmart was tied up with something with the Mob or Mafia. They used it as a piggy bank. That was the first time I’d ever heard. I’m like, ‘S***. The Mafia is still around?’ But he was really hesitant about doing it.” (Through his spokesperson, Lampert denies he made such comments.) vanityfair.com

Tenn. - Taking a closer look at organized retail theft to fund addiction
Bane says TN Senate Bill 1717 will focus on ways to locate and identify and punish individuals responsible for organizing, supervising, financing, or managing activities of one or more people guilty of organized retail crime.

Bane says the need for the bill stemmed from a growing number of substance abusers who are stealing merchandise from local businesses only to return the merchandise afterwards for gift card credit. The gift cards are then sold to other businesses or individuals for cash, which is used by the substance abuser to purchase illegal opiates.

According to Bane, organized retail crime in Tennessee is causing a loss in sales tax estimated at roughly $14 million. stategazette.com

In-N-Out Burger Files Restraining Order Against Prankster Claiming To Be CEO
In-N-Out Burger wants a restraining order against an online prankster who walked into two of its restaurants in the San Fernando Valley posing as the company’s CEO, loudly argued with employees and in one instance took a hamburger from a customer, threw it to the ground and stepped on it, claiming it was “garbage.”

The Irvine-based chain’s lawsuit seeking the order was filed Friday, March 23, in Los Angeles Superior Court against Cody Roeder, who posts videos on YouTube as Trollmunchies. Similar prank disruptions featuring Roeder have been recorded at Taco Bell and the Ralphs supermarket chain. ocregister.com

Why Walmart Is Testing Robots In Stores—and Here's What It Learned
Every day, one of Walmart’s robots rolls down every aisle three times to check that over 150,000 products are where they should be on store shelves. The robot will keep a record whether there isn’t enough toilet paper, or if an item doesn’t have the right price tag. From there, a human store clerk will either re-stock the aisle or put the right price tag on the product, because the robots are not physically capable of doing so. fortune.com

Connecticut man pleads guilty to multi-million dollar fencing operation on eBay

A North Haven man faces up to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to federal charges related to his role in a large-scale fencing operation, according to authorities. Paul William Muzyka, 48, entered his plea in Hartford Superior Court on Friday, U.S. States Attorney for Connecticut John H. Durham announced in a press release.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Muzyka helped operate a licensed secondhand store, Ace Amusements, located at 42 Kimberly Avenue in New Haven.

"At Ace Amusements, Muzyka and others knowingly purchased stolen property from 'boosters,' who typically were shoplifters with opioid addictions," according to a press release from the U.S. States Attorney's Office. "The boosters stole the goods from retail stores such as Home Depot, Walmart, Target and Kohl's, and sold the goods at Ace Amusements for approximately one-third of their retail prices. Muzyka and others then resold the stolen goods at Ace Amusements, and also online at websites such as eBay. The loss attributed this scheme exceeds $5.9 million." Read more

2017 Lessons Learned
The Facts Are That You Will Be Breached
Prevention Security & Smarter Detection & Rapid Response Models

"The smarter organizations have been moving away from a misplaced hope of complete breach prevention (that is impossible) to a combination of prevention security measures with smarter detection and rapid response."

"Equifax was one of the best examples that I can remember of how not to handle a major security breach" - No Response Plan

"From the initial failure to patch an ultra-critical website flaw to the bungled roll-out of the site to check if you were impacted by the breach, calling this breach a dumpster-fire is a disservice to dumpsters. Equifax needed a tested, rehearsed incident response plan. It's obvious they didn't have one."

"Another lesson is that more intelligence is needed to pick your battle -- which vulnerability absolutely must be fixed NOW and which ones can be left for later," Chuvakin said. "This will make the attacker work harder, hence increasing the chance of detection."

Uber's third-party cloud based service breach - Coming in the back door

"Uber's disregard for the well-being of their customers seems to be superseded only by their disregard for the well-being of their drivers," Austin said. "The next time a company has a security breach and covers it up, I'm calling it Ubergate."

The company allegedly paid hackers to delete the data and keep the breach quiet.

"Believe it or not, Uber may be in more legal trouble than Equifax," Austin said. "If Uber is found guilty of knowingly violating the breach notification laws in 48 out of 50 states, we could be looking at an Al Capone situation here. He was only convicted on tax evasion, but they still put him away for life."

Verizon security lapse exposes customer info - Finding the weak leak

In July, Verizon confirmed that 6 million customers had their personal data exposed because of a misconfigured Amazon Web Services Simple Storage Service bucket leak.

"First, we learned as consumers that we can't trust the custodians of our personal data (like name, passwords, email addresses) to protect and secure it properly."

"Second, we learned that very advanced threat actors are conducting crimes against companies like Verizon and others, not only for financial gain, but also to help adversarial nation states who use their platforms for their nefarious purposes," Litan said. "Third, we learned that companies are not employing strong enough security governance processes and technologies to keep the bad guys out." techtarget.com

Walmart Files Patent For Drone Customer Service In Stores
In a new twist aimed at customer service, Walmart has filed a patent for drones to aid shoppers in stores.

A shopper would use a mobile phone or a device provided by the store to summon a drone, which the consumer could then direct to do a price verification of a product or have the drone provide navigation assistance.

Different types of drones with different features, such as display screens and visual projectors, could be deployed to perform different types of tasks associated with providing assistance to a shopper, according to the filing. mediapost.com

Cloud Security Concerns Surge
While adoption of cloud computing continues to surge, security concerns are showing no signs of abating. After several years of a downward trend, 90% of cybersecurity professionals confirm they are concerned about cloud security, up 11 percentage points from last year’s cloud security survey. The top cloud security challenges are protecting against data loss and leakage (67%), threats to data privacy (61%) and breaches of confidentiality (53%).

A lack of qualified security staff and outdated security tools are significant obstacles to enabling a secure cloud posture at many enterprises. Only 16% of organizations report that the capabilities of traditional security tools are sufficient to manage security across the cloud, which is a 6% drop from 2017. A full 84% say traditional security solutions either don’t work at all in cloud environments or have only limited functionality. infosecurity-magazine.com

AI: Revolutionary Technology but a Big Business Risk
A paper released on Thursday by Allianz, the world’s largest insurer and a manager of some $2.2 trillion in assets, offers a stark portrayal of how the development of AI could go spectacularly wrong.
There are frightening implications for information security. While AI can be used to detect and prevent cyber-attacks, the opposite is also possible.

“AI could facilitate serious incidents by lowering the cost of devising new tools and weapons to launch attacks,” the paper points out. “AI could even be used in the future to weaken cyber defense mechanisms by utilizing social engineering to psychologically manipulate people into performing [certain] actions or divulging confidential information.”

Even a slight, unintentional AI error in an internal system could quickly escalate into a major problem that damages a company’s reputation and bottom line. A programming error could be replicated on any number of machines, leading to an unforeseen accumulation of losses. cfo.com

How hackers are hijacking your cell phone account
Fraudsters have figured out how to break in to online accounts protected by two-factor authentication, where the authenticating device is your mobile phone.

They don’t steal the phone; they simply hijack the phone number. This enables them to intercept those one-time verification codes sent to that mobile number by text, email, or phone call.

Armed with their victim’s personal information, such as date of birth and last four digits of their Social Security number - information that is widely available on the dark web - these identity thieves trick the wireless carriers into transferring (or porting) their target’s phone number to a new account or device they control. That’s why this is called the “port-out” scam.

Mobile phone hijacking is on the rise. Reports of this crime to the Federal Trade Commission more than doubled between 2013 and 2016, from 1,038 incidents to 2,658. These complaints “represent only the tip of a much larger iceberg,” the FTC noted. nbcnews.com

Return Fraud And Fake Receipts Up for Sale On The Deep & Dark Web
Many online retailers have implemented generous refund or replacement policies to help improve the customer journey and generate loyalty, but unfortunately, these policies can be susceptible to various forms of merchant abuse.

Refund fraud is a pervasive form of merchant abuse in which an actor purchases a product from an online store and has it shipped to their home or a drop site. After delivery, the actor falsely claims that the product never arrived, prompting the company to issue a refund. Thus, the fraudster receives their chosen product at no cost.

Research shows that online retail businesses lose approximately 500,000 UK pounds per month due to fraudulent refunds. The potential loss when you take into consideration fraudulent vouchers, fake goods and account take over, almost doubles.

Refund fraud is openly discussed on the underground forums and marketplaces of the Deep & Dark Web (DDW), where illicit vendors offering fraudulent refund services are commonplace.

As analysts of business risk intelligence, we have observed numerous vendors advertising fraudulent receipts for sale on the DDW. These actors are capable of producing counterfeit receipts in a variety of formats, including physical store receipts, packing slips, and digital receipts.

Fake receipts typically target retailers that sell technology products, and they are often available for less than $10 USD per receipt. However, fake receipt vendors are often capable of targeting a variety of companies and are able to adjust their tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) in response to customer concerns and demands. minutehack.com

Amazon Shoppers Concerned About Counterfeits
More than half say they’re at least somewhat worried

Amazon has dealt with sales of counterfeit goods on its site for some time, and despite its efforts to thwart third-party knockoffs, some consumers remain cautious.

In a February 2018 survey conducted by Survata for CPC Strategy, nearly six in 10 US Amazon buyers who had made a purchase on the site in the past six months said they're somewhat concerned about counterfeit products on Amazon. Meanwhile, a smaller but still significant share of respondents (14.4%) said they were very concerned about this issue.  More than four in 10 respondents had unknowingly bought a fake good from an online marketplace. emarketer.com

Facebook Adds Machine Learning to Fraud Fight
Machine learning tools will assist trained human reviewers who Facebook says block millions of fake accounts at the time of registration every day.

In the giant news shadow created by Cambridge Analytics, it can be easy to forget that Facebook-based basic financial fraud victimizes thousands of people every year. Today, Facebook announced that it is enlisting machine learning tools to help battle the criminals.

The new tools will be largely tasked with fighting fake accounts used to commit fraud. While there are a number of techniques being used to identify fraudulent accounts, in a blog post Facebook wrote that the company looks for "instances where people are reaching out to others far beyond their typical network of connections, or in unusually large volumes, along with other behavior patterns." darkreading.com

Fairfax, VA: Toys R Us employee stole over $100,000 of merchandise, Sold Them on Ebay
A former Toys R Us employee is accused of stealing more than $100,000 worth of toys and other merchandise, and reselling it on eBay. Obaid Sheikh, 25, worked at the Toy R Us at the Fair Lakes shopping center in Fairfax, Virginia. He has been charged with embezzlement, selling stolen property and conducting an unlawful financial transaction.

Mike Monaghan, the store Asset Protection manager, began an investigation into thefts at the store last October, a search warrant affidavit revealed. He discovered that toys marketed as "Toys R Us exclusives" were being sold by an eBay account. Monaghan tracked the eBay account to Sheikh, an employee who had been working at the Fair Lakes store for four years. His eBay account had generated $123,000 in revenue with sales of nearly 3,000 items, court documents say. When Sheikh was confronted, he admitted he'd taken the items out of the store through the back door and put them in his vehicle's trunk, a search warrant says. nbcwashington.com

Tip of the Day

Sometimes you've just got to draw the line on what advice to follow and who you ask. Certainly getting advice is important on any issue or decision. But at the end of the day you've got to own your own decision and listen to the bird on your shoulder. We all have one and oftentimes it's muted by our friends and family members. At 5 am staring into that mirror is usually when the bird whispers the clearest. The only problem then is if you don't hear it because you're not listening.

Just a Thought,
