Getting Talent Back to Work
Second Chances Are Good for Talent & Good for Business
The NRF Took the Pledge
Nearly 700,000 people are released from prison each year and are locked
out of the job market. Those who have served their time should not be
“re-sentenced” by employers, especially when businesses are experiencing a human
capital crisis.

Join business leaders & pledge to consider all qualified candidates:

TAKE THE PLEDGE

Access the resources you need to confidently evaluate the hiring of applicants
with criminal records:

Explore the Toolkit

In
late January, SHRM President and Chief Executive Officer Johnny C. Taylor, Jr.,
SHRM-SCP, announced the
Getting
Talent Back to Work initiative, which includes such
co-sponsors as the
U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Restaurant Association and Koch
Industries. Associations and companies representing more than 60 percent of the
U.S. workforce signed the Getting Talent Back to Work pledge, agreeing to change
their recruiting practices to include qualified people with criminal
backgrounds.

"This is a group we, as business leaders, cannot afford to overlook, as 1
in 3 adults in the United States currently has a criminal background,"
Taylor said. "Not only is it the right thing to do—to give a deserving person a
second chance—but it is becoming imperative as businesses continue to experience
recruiting difficulty at an alarming rate."

Criminal Records Survey - Impact on Associates -
Recruiting - Consumers
How Would You Feel If Your Co-Worker Had a Violent Criminal Record?

Most respondents to a recent survey said they'd feel comfortable working with
or buying goods or services from employees who have nonviolent criminal records.

But that sentiment changes drastically if fellow employees have violent
criminal records, according to survey results released April 1 by the Society
for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Only 1 in 3 out of 1,300 surveyed in the U.S. said they'd feel
comfortable working for an employer if some of their colleagues had violent
criminal records. Sixty percent said they'd feel uncomfortable, and the
remainder said they didn't know how they'd feel.

Similarly, about 3 in 4 said they'd feel comfortable buying goods or services
from businesses if the customer-facing employee had a nonviolent criminal
record. And just over half said they'd still feel comfortable doing so if the
customer-facing employee had spent five or more years in prison.

But again, only about 1 in 3 said they'd feel comfortable buying goods or
services from businesses if the customer-facing employee had a violent criminal
record. Sixty-three percent said they'd feel uncomfortable, while the rest said
they didn't know how they'd feel.

About 3 in 4 respondents said they'd feel comfortable working for an employer
that's known to hire those with criminal records.

Changing retail landscape prompts drive for C-level technology talent
Chain Store Age spoke with Melissa Reed, global partner at H.I. Executive
Consulting, about the recent uptick in hiring of top-level technology
executives in retail. High-profile examples this year include Levi Strauss
appointing Vodafone data chief Katia Walsh as chief strategy and artificial
intelligence officer and Pinterest tapping Walmart CTO Jeremy King as head of
engineering.

“The push to hire C-level technology executives is a reflection of the state of
the retail market,” said Reed. “Disruption is occurring as technology trends
like data and artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR),
voice-enabled search, and automation mature.”

Because retail as a sector has historically not done a good job of building
technology talent, Reed said now the industry needs to play catch-up to obtain
the people it needs. Fortunately, she said retail is more appealing to highly
qualified technology executives than it used to be.

“The state of the industry five to eight years ago was that retail was not
really doing anything interesting in technology,” said Reed. “Retail was not an
area where a visionary could build a career.”

In contrast, Reed said retail is now a great industry for forward-thinking
technology disruptors to focus their career.

Walmart Is Beating Amazon in a Business Worth $35 Billion: Click-and-Collect
On a number of fronts in online shopping, Amazon.com Inc.’s strategy is clear
and brutally effective. It is gunning for more dollars in high-margin categories
such as home goods with a growing catalog of private-label items. It’s offering
two-hour delivery in some markets, a speedy service few retailers are in
position to match. And its popular, voice-activated Alexa devices and software
have put it at the center of the emerging trend of shopping via virtual
assistants.

There is one important area, though, where Amazon’s strategy looks much fuzzier:
Click-and-collect. This hybrid of online and physical shopping is proving
popular, and it could potentially prove a costly mistake for Amazon that it
hasn’t moved more quickly to get a piece of the action.

This is a model that’s well-suited for traditional retailers. They are in a good
position to scale up quickly, and they are doing just that. Target Corp.’s
Drive Up service is offered at about 1,000 stores and will be in all stores by
the end of 2019. Walmart Inc.’s grocery pickup program is available at
about 2,100 stores and will be in 3,100 stores by the end of the fiscal year.

Bezos’ Security Consultant Accuses Saudis of Hacking the Amazon CEO’s Phone

unauthorized access to the Amazon chief executive’s phone, as part of an effort
to harm the world’s richest man.

In an opinion article in
The Daily Beast on Saturday, Gavin de Becker, Mr. Bezos’

Cabela’s Beats Suit Over Sale Of Gun Used In Fatal Shooting
A Delaware state judge on Friday tossed a suit accusing sporting goods company
Cabela’s of negligently selling a firearm that was later used in a deadly
drive-by shooting, saying a state law provides immunity to firearms dealers who
make lawful transfers of guns.

Superior Court Judge Vivian L. Medinilla granted a motion to dismiss the suit
alleging Cabela’s Wholesale Inc. was negligent in selling a handgun to a “straw
purchaser,” a woman who then gave the weapon to her convicted felon boyfriend.
The gun later ended up in the hands of a 16-year-old who used it in a drive-by
shooting that killed Keshall Anderson, a pedestrian caught in the crossfire,
according to the suit filed by Lisa Summers, the administrator of Anderson’s
estate.

MOODY'S: JCPenney could close dozens more stores
Moody’s vice president, Christina Boni, fully expects that J.C. Penney will make
the decision to close more stores than the 27 it currently plans to shutter.
“Even after announced store closings, the company will have a larger footprint
than many of its competitors, while sales per square foot are well below those
of peers,” she said.

JCPenney said in February that it planned to close 18 full-line department
stores and nine home and furniture stores this year, bringing its total
locations to roughly 840. Going forward, the company will likely target store
closures in the approximately 100 malls that already have multiple anchor
vacancies, analysts wrote.

Analysis: Dark Web Arrests Also Led to Ransomware Disruption
Hackers turn to Google Ads after feds shut down 'Dream Market' website
Last week, Europol, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies made 61
arrests of individuals suspected of selling illegal goods on the dark web.
Researchers at Coveware, an incident response firm, say the raids also
apparently led to the closing of the "Dream Market" dark web site - seen as a
successor to the infamous Silk Road marketplace.

Coveware analysts believe that the closure of the Dream Market has, in turn,
disrupted ransomware attacks that leveraged Dream Market as a platform, forcing
attackers to use alternatives.

The law enforcement crackdown apparently has sent some distributors of
ransomware, as well as victims seeking further instructions, into a scramble to
re-establish contact, according to Coveware's
analysis. Some attackers and ransomware distributors have turned to
Google Adwords as an alternative to reconnect with victims, the company
reports. Coveware reports that it saw messages between attackers and incident
response firms attempting to make a deal and connect with victims.

Nation-State and Crime Groups Keep Blending, Europol Warns
More Advanced Attack Tools Cheaper and
Easier to Access

Distinguishing nation-state attacks from organized crime continues to grow more
difficult because some attackers wear both hats, a Europol official reports.
Further complicating the picture: Young attackers enjoy access to ever-more
sophisticated and inexpensive tools and services.

"The problem we see now is that ... you can be nation-state by day, organized
crime by night. You have a mandate to operate as long as you don't do
anything in your own country," said Steven Wilson, head of Europol's European
Cybercrime Center.

The state of attack tools is such that individual attackers can increasingly
destabilize businesses as well as a nation's critical infrastructure.

Your Drone-Delivered Coffee Is (Almost) Here
Clear the backyard landing pad - the drones
are ready. The laws (and cities) are not.

Drones might never make it in the big city: too many concrete canyons, errant
pedestrians and unpredictable truck drivers, not to mention too few backyards to
serve as drop points. That’s why drone developers have their sights on the
suburbs, where other forms of delivery are still generally unprofitable. Whether
drones can be a saving grace depends on whether they can make a half-dozen
backyard deliveries an hour in a five-mile radius without hitting any houses,
cars, people, trees or power lines.

Those are big ifs, but according to their creators and industry experts, Aha and
Wing are demonstrating that drone delivery can work. Getting to this point
wasn’t easy - and the road ahead is far from clear.

A Russian drone hunts other drones with a shotgun
The terrifying 50-pound drone is controlled
by a visor-wearing operator

A
Russian defense contractor has patented a drone that uses a shotgun to blast
other drones out of the sky. It comes from Almaz Antey, a Russian defense
contractor that manufactures the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile that caused
a rift between Turkey and the US. The tail-sitting drone takes off on the spot
but flies like an airplane for greater efficiency, giving it a 40-minute range
while packing a fully-automatic Vepr-12 shotgun with a 10-round magazine.

For now it's merely a demonstrator, according to the Russian defense site
Dambiev. However, Russia is pretty serious about weapons-packing drones, having
already created the "Karnivora" drone equipped with nets to take out other UAVs.
A "shock" version can reportedly carry high-explosive fragmentation grenades and
anti-tank bombs -- nightmare fuel, indeed.

Don’t Automatically Connect
to a Wi-Fi Network
Your smartphone, tablet or laptop is most likely set to
automatically connect to any available Wi-Fi network. This could allow your
device to connect to public Wi-Fi without you knowing, which has privacy risks.
You can disable this feature in the Wi-Fi settings on your device. Hackers set
up malicious Wi-Fi networks in order to steal information from users who
automatically connect to public networks at hotels, airports and coffee shops.
It is generally safe to automatically connect to known networks like home and

Facebook Friendly Fraud Case Shows Chargeback
Rules Not Consistent Among Merchants
Reports that Facebook leveraged “friendly fraud”—a practice e-commerce
merchants are usually hurt by—in potentially deceptive ways for revenue gain
surfaced in January, which has led to two U.S. senators calling on the Federal
Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate. The case has brought friendly fraud
mainstream attention and exposed a calculation some merchants are able to make
when they accept transactions they know are likely to be disputed, if noticed by
cardholders.

Facebook is not the first internet giant to face scrutiny over the issue.
Amazon was cited by the FTC in 2016 after it received many complaints from
consumers about surprise in-app charges incurred by children. Complaints that
companies acted unfairly with regard to children making in-app purchases were
also filed again against
Apple and
Google.

“Settlement agreements with the FTC required those companies to modify their
billing practices to ensure they obtained express, informed consent from
consumers for any in-app purchases, and required them to offer refunds of up to
$70 million,” according to a letter urging the FTC to investigate Facebook’s
practices signed by 17 organizations advocating for the rights of children and
consumers including Common Sense Media and the Center for Digital Democracy.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is actively trying to establish new
standards that would prevent the practice of encouraging children to make
in-app purchases. On the organization’s website, beneath an image of a
character in tears after a player declined an in-app purchase, site states:
“When apps and games are labeled for children, parents should be able to trust
that they’re truly safe for kids. But unfortunately, they can’t. New
research shows that the most popular apps in the Family section of the Google
Play Store are rife with problems, like pressuring kids into making purchases.”

Speed Kills! As the old expression goes, so does the pace of today's world. With
technology leashing us forward and mobile coming at the speed of light, no one
can slow down. The problem then becomes focus and concentration. Multitasking,
while impossible to avoid, leads to a reduction in quality and quality is what
every senior executive must be focused on. So the next time you're running fast,
just take one second and think about was the service you just delivered quality
service.

Just a Thought, Gus
