LP Software Celebrates 15 Years of Innovation

Who are the "LP Guys" and where did they come from?

LP Software, Inc. started in 1998 as a venture partnership dedicated to developing and delivering unique software applications designed to revolutionize the retail loss prevention mission. The first product, Loss Prevention Management System (LPMS), was released in 1999. LPMS resulted from the application of over 20 years of loss prevention and law enforcement experiences of the LP Software principals, the "LP Guys."

Often frustrated throughout their careers with the typically massive administrative workload essential to operate and manage an LP program, the LP Guys came to realize there had to be a better and smarter way to work. One of the earliest realizations was that the term "loss prevention" usually belies itself. This is because the loss prevention staff ty
pically spends more time with the administrative workload resulting from a failing program, than with actually preventing the losses in the first place. Convinced they could make life a whole lot better in the loss prevention arena, the LP Guys went to work.

What is the result of their efforts?  Under the direction of the company’s founder and president, Brian Eskra, and co-founder and vice president, Roy Haehnel, the LP Guys have developed LPMS - the industry’s most powerful and adaptive loss prevention management tool available. Needless to say, they succeeded.

Brian and Roy have guided the company over the years with a leadership philosophy based on trust. They have assembled a team of experienced leaders, many of whom have worked in retail loss prevention themselves. LP moves up a gear at the Retail Fraud Show in London  The Retail Fraud Show – London took place this week at Novotel West London with an unparalleled range of speakers and panelists. The focus of the event was on what Keynote Speaker Brand L. Elverston of Walmart termed the ‘paradigm shift’ in retail Asset Protection. While Loss Prevention departments’ core responsibilities remain undiminished, Brand said, there must be a ‘moving the bookends out’ as their role enlarges to support profitability of the business as a whole. This paradigm demands new mind- and skill- sets among LP professionals. Also setting the tone for the day were American Golf’s CFO Stuart Owens and Loss Prevention Manager John Mantle. They showed that what lay behind their enviable shrink control figures was precisely this: the role of their LP function as an omnipresent support and ‘hand holding’ function for everyone across the business – not merely a firefighting service when things go wrong. NYPD Commissioner Bratton, top brass meet with civil rights leaders, retailers over 'shop-and-frisk'  The first meeting between the NYPD commissioner, civil rights leaders and retailers concerned about racial profiling in city stores was “cordial and professional,” participants said Thursday. The hour-long discussion was held at 1 Police Plaza with new Commissioner Bill Bratton and top NYPD brass. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rev. Al Sharpton said the NYPD has changed its policy regarding shoplifting in major department stores. Store security now has to call 911 if it suspects a client of shoplifting or identity theft, Sharpton said. Cops won’t enter a department store unless summoned by 911, unless it’s an emergency, he said. “The concerns about racial profiling cannot be resolved until we know who does what and who identifies the suspects,” the civil rights leader said. Sharpton attended the meeting with other civil rights leaders and top execs from Macy’s and Barneys and the Retail Council of New York State. They’re all members of a “shop-and-frisk” task force that was convened last fall in the wake of several high-profile allegations from black shoppers of racial profiling at department stores by NYPD detectives. In the immediate aftermath of the incidents the NYPD said its detectives acted upon information from store security. But the stores said it had been the detectives who initiated the actions against the black shoppers. There should be no such confusion in the future, Sharpton said. “All complaints and legal engagements with the NYPD must start with a 911 call ... Therefore the community and the public has a record of who made the call and was the basis for the call,” he noted. The new directive has actually been in place since October, according to an NYPD spokesman. It was a directive from the Chief of Department’s office and the Chief of Patrol by which retail establishments, if they wanted to get some police response on some suspicious activity, would be required to call 911," said DCPI Commissioner Stephen Davis said. “I believe that in the past in some instances the (store) security was calling local precinct units directly, probably because they dealt with them so often,” he said. Mayor Bill de Blasio applauded Bratton for sitting down with the task force — something former Commissioner Raymond Kelly never did. “I think (Bratton’s) done an extraordinary job of making clear that we are going to work very, very hard to create a fairer city and that we want to bring police and community together, and this is another piece of that equation,” the mayor said. "Shop and frisk" Central Question - "Who, precisely, has been flagging certain shoppers as suspicious: the police or store personnel" - everything must start with 911 call  In allegations of profiling at Barneys New York and at Macy’s, the stores said the police acted on their own; the Police Department, in turn, said it was the stores that told them whom to go after. Police Commissioner William J. Bratton and the Rev. Al Sharpton met behind closed doors on Thursday. Mr. Sharpton did say that Mr. Bratton had agreed during their sit-down at Police Headquarters that “all legal engagements with N.Y.P.D. must start with a 911 call with the retailers to the Police Department,” in order to ensure that there would be a better record of who initiated the contact and might, later, be held responsible for racial profiling. “What we learned today, and what we wanted to find out, was what sort of protocol we would be asked to follow,” said Ted Potrikus, director of governmental relations for the trade group, to reporters alongside Mr. Sharpton. U.S. States Investigating Breach at Experian
An exclusive KrebsOnSecurity investigation detailing how a unit of credit bureau Experian ended up selling consumer records to an identity theft service in the cybercrime underground has prompted a multi-state investigation by several attorneys general, according to wire reports. Reuters moved a story this afternoon quoting Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan saying that ”it’s part of a multistate investigation,” and that Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said that Connecticut is looking into the matter as well. News of the breach first came to light on this blog in October 2013, when KrebsOnSecurity published an exclusive story detailing how a Vietnamese man running an online identity theft service bought personal and financial records on Americans directly from a company owned by Experian, one of the three major U.S. credit bureaus. But according to prosecutors, Ngo had already struck deals with one of the world’s biggest data brokers: Experian. Court records just released last week show that Ngo tricked an Experian subsidiary into giving him direct access to personal and financial data on more than 200 million Americans. According to U.S. government investigators, the data was not obtained directly from Experian, but rather via Columbus, Ohio-based US Info Search. US Info Search had a contractual agreement with a California company named Court Ventures, whereby customers of Court Ventures had access to the US Info Search data as well as Court Ventures’ data, and vice versa. Experian came into the picture in March 2012, when it purchased Court Ventures (along with all of its customers — including Mr. Ngo). For almost ten months after Experian completed that acquisition, Ngo continued siphoning consumer data and making his wire transfers. (Source krebsonsecurity.com)

Commercial Drones May Disrupt The Retail And E-Commerce Industries First  While drones are unlikely to become a part of our daily lives in the immediate future, they will soon begin taking on much larger roles for businesses and some individual consumers, from delivering groceries to revolutionizing private security, to changing the way farmers manage their crops — perhaps even aerial advertising. But retail and e-commerce — along with the related logistics and shipping industries — arguably have the most at stake in the wide deployment of civilian and commercial unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. Credit/debit card fraud attacks on the way up in 2013  According to a recent survey, even as check fraud has declined, companies are now preparing for the shift in credit/debit card liability from issuers to merchants. Results show that 22% of respondents that accept credit/debit cards from their customers anticipate a significant impact from their investment in card acceptance fraud prevention methods and half expect some impact. The same study unveils that following recent security breaches, 63% of organizations have either adopted additional security measures or are planning to do so in the near future, with measures ranging from secure signature stamps, electronic signatures, payment data stored with third-party vendors and increased layers of security. Human cashiers still trump self-checkouts for most grocers in Canada - But the debate continues & so does theft  Today, grocery stores still rely mostly on cashiers, and some chains have started removing self- checkouts. In Canada, none of the major grocers appear to be adding machines. Loblaw has even removed some from newly renovated Provigo Le Marchés. “We promise the best service possible, and the machines aren’t part of that,” a spokesperson for the chain told Canadian Grocer. “[Self-checkout] hasn’t been a failure, but it hasn’t been a success.” In a sparkling new Provigo Le Marché in Saint Sauveur, Que., manager Annie Lacerte says SCOs often jammed and were confusing to operate. Customers didn’t like hunting for produce codes, and the repetitive computer voice instruction to “please put the item in the bag, please put the item in the bag” got on nerves. The store recently removed its SCOs, replacing them with tills manned by humans. A survey last fall by U.K. retail technology firm Tensator found one-third of Brits have walked out of a store over a bad experience with an SCO. Business Insider website recently reported that Costco was pulling SCO machines out of its stores. The club chain’s CEO, Craig Jelinek, concluded that cashiers were more efficient than the machines. But don’t count out self-checkouts yet. Walmart is reportedly adding 10,000 machines, and another U.K. study suggests the market for self-checkouts will go up 15% over the next four years in the U.K. as retailers look for ways to economize. Even SCOs’ cost-savings are debated. Desmanches, the IGA owner, doesn’t think they are cheaper than clerks. A new British study found one in five consumers admitted to stealing from them. The average: 15 pounds (CDN$27) a month. But SCO technology is evolving rapidly. As machines become more sophisticated, self-checkout may experience a renaissance. In January, NCR unveiled the RealScan 79 Bi-Optic Imager. It can tell the difference between a lemon and a grapefruit, thereby reducing customer frustration with produce codes. Video surveillance also helps cut shrink, says NCR spokesperson Tony Carter. Overall, he says, the machine will help speed up checkout. (Source canadiangrocer.com)

Ontario grocery stores to have liquor stores inside - Here comes another Washington State ORC mess  The pilot will begin with 10 LCBO Express kiosks to open by the end of the year, and each LCBO location would include Ontario craft beer and VQA wines. Sousa noted the LCBO Express stores would operate under the same LCBO hours of business, but a separate checkout location would be in place for those purchasing LCBO products versus other grocery fare. New Retail Breach: The 'Low-and-Slow' Attack

Spec's Liquor Store Chain Says 'Under-the-Rader' Malware May Have Exposed 500,000 Customers and 9,000 Employees over an 18-month period

Houston-based liquor store chain Spec's says its network was attacked by malware back in October 2012, and the the intrusion, which exposed card data and other information, may have continued until as late as March 20, 2014. The attack wasn't revealed until last week at the request of law enforcement officials. Spec's spokeswoman Jenifer Sarver says suspicions of a breach date back to early 2013, when a major U.S. card issuer alerted law enforcement of potential fraud linked back to cards used at Spec's. "The attackers were sophisticated and took a number of intricate steps to avoid detection," Sarver says. So-called "low-and-slow" attacks, such as the Spec's breach, are becoming increasingly common as the malware used to attack retailers gets more difficult to immediately detect, security experts say. One executive who works with a leading card issuer on the West Coast, who asked to remain anonymous, says fraud linked to Spec's customers has been too low to raise flags. Gartner analyst and financial fraud expert Avivah Litan says many more low-and-slow attacks, like the Spec's breach, are likely ongoing and not yet identified. "Malware designers like to mimic file names and other attributes that are already in the native environment where their malware will reside," says one analyst. "Customization allows the malware to hide out in the open, more or less, because it may appear to be something as banal as 'inventory log,' which could easily be a common file name that any retailer might have in their system." Kroger, Macy's and FYE stores helps bust Charleston, W.Va. fencing operation - retail store - 'Middle East Mart'  Charleston Police raided the business after an eight month under cover investigation of retail organized crime fencing operation. Undercover officers were made aware that the business had been receiving stolen property, and that led to the investigation. Undercover officers had been selling employees at the business items that those employees believed were stolen. Those items were marked. During the raid of the business, officers located those stolen items, marijuana, and an undisclosed amount of cash in a back room. Police say the store owner would give well-known-thieves a shopping list -- sending them out to get high end purses, food, and even DVDs and CDs. Charleston Police Sergeant Bobby Eggleston says they worked with major retailers Macy's, Kroger, and the music store FYE to crack these cases. Sergeant Eggelston says the thieves are people the police know on a first-name-basis. The store is just a few steps away from the Charleston Transit Mall a well-known trouble spot in downtown Charleston. In the last week and a half nearly two-dozen arrests have happened in that area related to outstanding warrants, drugs, and harassment. (Source wsaz.com) (Source wowktv.com)
 
Two US men plead guilty for their role in $15M global hacking operation  Robert Dubuc, 40, from Massachusetts along with Oleg Pidtergerya, 49, of New York, used information stolen from more than 12 banks, payroll processing companies, brokerage firms and government agencies - in their effort, more than $15 million in funds have been reportedly stolen. Once a bank account was compromised, the cybercriminals then sent the information to others, accused of withdrawing funds from ATM accounts or making fraudulent purchases in New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, Illinois and other locations. Checkpoint Systems Rolling out EAS Chain-Wide
at Family Dollar


THOROFARE, N.J. – April 3, 2014 –
Checkpoint Systems, Inc., a leading global supplier of merchandise availability solutions for the retail industry, today announced that it is implementing EAS loss prevention technology in each of Family Dollar’s more than 8,000 stores nationwide. This is one of the fastest roll-outs in the industry, with 3,500 installations already completed and 120 more occurring each week.

Both companies have also begun the planning process to implement source tagging as well as a hard tag @source program. By working with Family Dollar’s consumer packaged goods and apparel suppliers, this new program will ensure merchandise arrives at Family Dollar stores EAS tagged and shelf-ready, enhancing its customer's shopping experience. With both tagging programs, Family Dollar aims to further reduce shrink and increase team members’ productivity by focusing their time on customer-facing activities.

After extensive field testing, Family Dollar chose Checkpoint’s EVOLVE P10 ECO electronic article surveillance (EAS) solutions because it positively impacted its store profitability by reducing shrink, lowering energy costs and had a significant increase on merchandise availability of key high-velocity items.

According to Julie Giblin, Family Dollar’s VP of Loss Prevention, “This rollout has already positively impacted our profitability. We could not be more pleased with the results and the partnership with Checkpoint, especially with the implementation speed."
