Active Assailant, Unarmed Officer
The level of awareness exhibited by security personnel can have a butterfly effect on an active assailant's perception of risk. Active shooter attacks often end when the perpetrator is apprehended or killed by law enforcement, or when the attacker commits suicide—rarely do assailants run or escape. Having security guards onsite may mitigate the chances of an attack, but this type of embedded response is no guarantee that the attacker will be deterred or stopped.

Security officers can also focus on the events that occur before an attack. People who intend to commit violence often give themselves away by their physical appearance or behavior. By engaging people with simple hospitality principles, a security officer is more likely to observe warning signs. This enhanced awareness allows the guard to implement security methods that may deter the attacker.

Even when the worst-case scenario occurs, a security officer's situational awareness is critical. Early detection enables officers to respond more quickly and help others by providing instructions that can mitigate the attack. By observing physical and behavioral cues, acting upon concerns, and implementing effective response methods, unarmed guards can help prevent or mitigate active assailant attacks.

Preattack Indicators

Because most attacks represent the killer's first and last act of violence, the assailant often exhibits telltale signs of the incident to come. With little to no prior criminal record or experience in extreme violence, they may show behavioral and physical indicators that give their bad intentions away. Looking out for these early warning signs, or preattack indicators (PAINs), can alert the security practitioner to potential trouble and possibly thwart attacks. asisonline.org

More Than $11 Billion in Fines Fails to Deter Global Corruption
The scale of bribery and corruption has shown no improvement globally since 2012, despite the unprecedented level of enforcement activity and introduction of new corporate criminal liability laws in that time. This is according to the 15th EY Global Fraud Survey.

This year’s survey found that despite regulators and law enforcement agencies around the world imposing more than $11 billion of financial penalties since 2012, 38% of global executives still believe bribery and corrupt practices remain prevalent in business.

The difference in levels of corruption between countries remains significant, with 20% of respondents in developed markets indicating that bribery and corruption occurs widely in business, compared with more than half (52%) of those in emerging markets.

Integrity sits high on the board agenda, the survey finds, with 97% recognizing the importance of their organization being seen to operate with integrity. Although improved customer perception, staff retention and business performance were all seen as benefits of demonstrating integrity, there remains a mismatch between intentions and actual behavior. Thirteen percent of respondents say they would justify making cash payments to win or retain business. Interestingly, this rises to 20% among those that are under the age of 35 years old.

Ensuring that ethical conduct is managed effectively is not only an issue that needs to be dealt with internally, but also with third parties and those acting on behalf of the organization, according to the report. Yet third-party due diligence also seems to be a low priority, with only 59% of respondents indicating they have a tailored risk-based approach to due diligence on third parties. securitymagazine.com

New York Employers Must Provide Sexual-Harassment Training
Training requirements are part of sweeping anti-harassment legislation

The training requirement is standard, so employers that are already conducting comprehensive harassment training are probably covering the main points.

By Oct. 9, New York employers must implement annual sexual-harassment training. They can use a model program, which will be created by state agencies, or they can implement their own sexual-harassment training programs that meet or exceed state standards. shrm.org

Employers Increasingly Drop Marijuana Testing of Job Applicants
Workers’ state-law rights for marijuana use are quickly on the rise
Employers should think twice before drug-testing every job applicant, according to Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta—advice many companies already are following in light of the patchwork of state laws affording rights to medical marijuana users and increased use of pot, experts say. Acosta made his remark at a House Ways and Means Committee hearing April 17.

Despite Acosta's statement, marijuana use remains illegal under federal law, but there is a "march toward legality" across the country under state law, a conflict that is "confusing to employers," Clarkson noted.

Safety First, a drug-testing division of Behavioral Health Systems, has had clients remove marijuana from their testing panels as a direct result of changes in state law, said Judi Braswell, vice president of business development with the parent company, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala. She added that some in certain industries, such as hotel and hospitality, don't implement marijuana-testing programs due to concerns that firing those who test positive would cause significant staffing issues.

Many employers in or near states where marijuana has been legalized increasingly are dropping marijuana from drug-test panels.

In several states—including Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts—courts have ruled that an employee testing positive for marijuana has a viable claim against an employer for enforcing drug-free workplace policies, Clarkson said.

Nine states and Washington, D.C., have legalized the use of marijuana use for any reason, but so far Maine is the only state protecting recreational marijuana users in the workplace, he added. Utah and Oklahoma are considering legalizing medical marijuana, and Michigan has a ballot initiative to make marijuana use legal for any reason, notes The New York Times.

In 12 states—Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island—medical marijuana users have certain job protections, so pre-employment screens or random screens could trigger job protections in those states. shrm.org

Pharmacy Owner of Six Stores Gets 15 Years For Role In $100M Scheme
The owner of a group of Florida pharmacies was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in prison and ordered to give up $54.5 million in restitution after he pled guilty to his role in a $100 million scheme involving bogus insurance reimbursements for prescription drugs.

“Borgesano and his co-conspirators also paid kickbacks and bribes in exchange for prescriptions and patient identifying information used to further the scheme, including to a physician in exchange for the physician signing prescriptions for patients he never saw,” the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement about the sentencing on Thursday.

Prosecutors had placed Borgesano at the center of an alleged scheme in which the pharmacy owner used his six stores to peddle prescription compound medications, including pain creams and scar creams, then submit fraudulent reimbursement claims to Medicare, Tricare and private insurance companies, according to the government. law360.com

Talking about the future of retail robots
What’s the next major growth area for robotics?
Radio frequency identification. The technology has been around forever, but retailers are now starting to adopt it in a major way. Macy’s recently did a 15-month test. Some 80 percent of its inventory was RFID-tagged. The benefits are phenomenal. With RFID, you can go from a once-a-year physical count of inventory to monthly, daily or even hourly. The benefits of inventory accuracy are huge. That way you’re not ordering stuff that isn’t selling.

You are ordering stuff that is selling. And you’re able to find your merchandise down to a single item in a single store.

Are robots going to take over retail?

“Take over” is an amorphous term. It’s not one I would use. I don’t see a totally robotized store for a while. In retail, I think of it more like car manufacturing, where people and automation are working side by side, complementing each other. With robots, there’s a labor cost savings, productivity enhancement and accuracy enhancement. Robots don’t make mistakes like humans.

Will retailers be able to replace all their cashiers with robotics?

Frictionless checkout won’t be about robot cashiers. I could see robots roaming stores and helping to load and pack groceries and assist with checkout, but that’s a while out. But a different form of frictionless checkout is coming quickly, where the customer simply waves a wand to scan their merchandise. stores.org

Why We Should Be Optimistic About Retail
Retail has been in a constant state of renewal since the earliest days of commerce. Artisans were disrupted by merchants, who were disrupted by bazaars and spice-route traders. Pushcarts disrupted stand-alone stores. The Sears Roebuck catalog of 1893 disrupted the first era of brick-and-mortar retail. Malls disrupted the town square; superstores and category-killers disrupted the local five-and-dime. And now, off-price, dollar stores, fast-fashion and online players are shaking up the industry. Through it all, retail has survived.

The disrupter du jour is, of course, Amazon - which collected more than 40 cents of every dollar spent online last year.

Few retailers have figured out yet how to compete effectively with Amazon, but some perspective is necessary. Just 8.9 percent of retail sales in the United States last year were made online - including Amazon. Said differently, 91.1 percent of the $5.7 trillion consumers spent at retailers last year still passed through brick-and-mortar locations. Yes, the share of retail sales taking place online will continue to increase for some time - but not forever.

Billionaire mall owner: 'Amazon has been great for retail' - and here's why
At a time when retail stores have been closing due to the "Amazon effect," billionaire mall owner Rick Caruso says "Amazon has been great for retail."

"What (Amazon has) shown us is a path to success," the owner of The Grove and The Americana malls in Los Angeles told CNBC's "Squawk Alley" on Monday. "Competition just on price doesn't work. You have to compete on knowledge. You have to compete on knowing your customer. You have to compete on being convenient."

Caruso said Amazon has shown retailers how to innovate and serve customers more effectively. Retailers that are evolving in the right ways are thriving and growing, the billionaire real estate developer said.

The fact that Amazon is opening physical stores "tells us that a hybrid model where you have digital and you have (brick and mortar) retail is very important," Caruso said. cnbc.com

Study Details Alarming Risks to Knowledge Assets
More than four in five IT security practitioners admit that their companies' knowledge assets likely have been breached.

Eighty-two percent of security practitioners acknowledge it’s likely that high-value assets of their companies have been breached in the second annual study on the topic by law firm Kilpatrick Townsend and the Ponemon Institute.

Further, the proportion of respondents saying it’s likely that company knowledge assets are in the hands of a competitor rose to 65% from 60%.

Reported costs to recover from a breach rose sharply last year, to an average of $6.8 million, from $5.4 million in 2016.

According to the study, “knowledge assets” include profiles of high-value customers; information about product design, development, and pricing; pre-release financial reports; strategic plans; confidential information about existing relationships or contemplated transactions; source code; and research-and-development secrets

Most respondents (84%) said the maximum loss their organizations could experience resulting from a material breach of knowledge assets exceeded $100 million, compared with 67% who said so in the prior study.

Companies are taking many actions that underscore their growing awareness of risks to knowledge assets. 73% of respondents are focusing training and awareness programs on decreasing employee errors in the handling of sensitive and confidential information.

Further, there is greater recognition that third-party access to a company’s knowledge assets is a significant risk. More companies are requiring proof that third parties meet generally accepted security requirements (41% in the new study, compared with 31% a year earlier). cfo.com

In what ways can a CISO become a business enabler?

Another often overlooked element is the transparency of the cybersecurity program and its multiyear strategy. Providing C-suite members the opportunity to share their top challenges and concerns, as well as their thoughts on cybersecurity prior to developing a multiyear cybersecurity roadmap is crucial, even if their input doesn't have a material impact on that roadmap. The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), an organization dedicated to defining and raising awareness of best practices to help ensure a secure cloud-computing environment, recently released its State of Cloud Security 2018.

Police Seize Webstresser.org, Bust 6 Suspected Admins
DDoS Stresser/Booter Service's Servers Seized; Top Users Also Arrested

Police in Europe have announced the seizure of a site widely believed to be the world's largest provider of on-demand distributed denial-of-service attacks.

Called Webstresser.org, the site boasted 136 million registered users and had launched more than 4 million attacks against websites, says Europol, the EU's law enforcement intelligence agency.

Six of the site's suspected top administrators were also arrested in the United Kingdom, Croatia, Canada and Serbia on Tuesday, according to the U.K.'s National Crime Agency, which says it was assisted by police in those countries as well as Police Scotland. govinfosecurity.com

What is Networking?

“Networking” is a term that get used, abused, and confused throughout the business community. Some see it as “being slick” or simply collecting the business cards at a conference or something as simple as sending a boiler-plate message on Linkedin to “connect” with another professional. None of those practices constitute useful, professional networking – at least not in my experience.

Productive networking occurs when you make a connection that you build on over the course of time until such point that the “connection” becomes a “relationship.” This does not necessarily mean a close personal friendship. But, relationship suggests that there are shared reference points, a level of trust, and a willingness to help each other.

I’ll be the first to admit that I look forward to industry conferences. At some of the larger shows, I might know 200+ other attendees by name and have fairly strong relationships with 50-75 of them. So, for me, going to a show is a great chance to catch up with my network, find out what new ideas or activities they have going on in their business, and ask for their input on issues that are on my plate. But, the reason I know all of these people is because I’ve been going to shows for over 25 years and I have cultivated these relationships over a long period of time.

Top 5 E-Commerce Challenges And How to Overcome Them
E-commerce is expected to surge by 20 percent to become a $4 trillion market by 2020, according to Nielsen data. Amazon wasn’t the only issue cited during a panel discussion on e-commerce trends at Dublin Tech Summit, held Apr. 18-19 at the city’s convention center. The panelists pointed to five e-commerce challenges currently presenting problems for online sellers and suggested possible solutions for overcoming those obstacles.

#1. Listing inventory online
“If you think of when the internet started, how many years did it take before shops had their opening hours online? Even something as simple as that took a while. Most shops now have their opening hours online but really the vast majority of stores still don’t have their inventory displayed online.”

#2. Providing bespoke personalization at scale
Panelist Kyle Price, eBay’s director of business development, EMEA, said that it’s not that customers are changing, it’s that the ways in which they’re being addressed have massively shifted, particularly in terms of personalization.

#3. International expansion
A DHL report out last year named cross-border e-commerce one of the fastest growth opportunities in retail, predicting sales would increase at an average rate of 25 percent a year between 2015 and 2020. That’s twice the pace of domestic e-commerce growth.

#4. Lack of time and focus
“If you’re a corner store, a bicycle store, a convenience store, a pharmacy, e-commerce is a very small channel for you. It might only be a few percent of your sales,” Mark said, adding, “You can’t afford to go out and spend a lot on a solution and even if you can afford the solution, you can’t afford the time to maintain it or even just learn about how it all operates.”

Almost half of retailers have seen an increase in “intentional returns” (customers who order multiple sizes of a product because returns are free or cheap) over the past year, according to a recent study by Brightpearl.

Tallahassee, FL: UPS worker used labels addressed to himself to steal $20,000 of electronics
A 19-year-old UPS employee is facing felony charges after it was discovered he was systematically stealing electronics from his job to sell on eBay. Nicholas R. Ocampo, 19, was arrested on a charge of fraudulently obtaining property worth less than $20,000 and booked into the Leon County Detention Center on Thursday. He was released later that day on a $1,000 bond. On April 25, 2018, a UPS loss prevention officer said he discovered Ocampo had made labels addressed to himself at his home address and placed the labels on packages at the warehouse, according to a probable cause affidavit. The packages were to be delivered to customers. Ocampo was accused of fraudulently putting labels addressed to himself on nine packages from Feb. 2, through March 6. wtxl.com

Avon, IN: Avon Police search for suspect in multiple thefts from Target and other Central Indiana Retailers
Avon Detectives hope someone can identify the man caught on a police car dash cam after a Target store theft. The suspect got away, but he is suspected of several thefts involving expensive items at department stores across central Indiana. The police dash cam also recorded when he decided to make a run for it. The dash cam in another squad car shows him running to his car. South Attleboro, MA: C-Store Burglary suspects may be linked to Organized Ring
The two men arrested in connection with the burglary at a South Attleboro convenience store last weekend are under investigation for allegedly being part of an organized commercial burglary ring suspected in two dozen break-ins in three states. The alleged ring, based in Lawrence, targets commercial businesses that sell cigarettes and other tobacco products as well as automatic teller machines. thesunchronicle.com

Christchurch, New Zealand: 3 of 6 suspects pleads Guilty to 23 charges in Organized Theft Ring
Alexander James McCormick, 27, burgled properties across Christchurch in June and July 2017, and was caught by police in a motel unit with a large amount of the stolen property. The recovered property included laptops, cameras, building tools, and clothing, and more of it was found at other addresses and in a stolen car. Update: Norridgewock, ME: Suspect in Maine Deputy killing may want to talk

Authorities searching for a third day for a man sought in the fatal shooting of a Maine deputy sheriff say they've learned he may want to reach out and talk to them. The shooting of Somerset County Cpl. Eugene Cole early Wednesday morning in Norridgewock has triggered an intensive search for 29-year-old John Williams in and around the heavily wooded rural community about 60 miles (96 kilometers) west of Bangor. He's considered armed and dangerous. Sheriff Dale Lancaster said Friday authorities understand that Williams may want to communicate with them but wouldn't elaborate further. Lancaster said they are willing to listen and encouraged him to reach out. wcvb.com

Charlotte, NC: Paintball shooters ambush customers, workers in barbershop
A business owner said several masked men stormed into his barbershop Thursday afternoon and started shooting paintball guns. The owner said he doesn’t know who the men are or why they initiated an attack. Employees and customers at the barbershop had to dive to the ground for cover and were unsure why the men stormed in to shoot up the store. wsoctv.com

Fayetteville, NC: Clerk shoots Armed Robber at BP C-store
A Fayetteville C- store clerk opened fire Wednesday night on 2 masked men who came into the store carrying a gun. The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. at the Five Star BP gas station. A witness saw two masked men running inside, so she called 911. Clerk Bassam Albareti, 29, saw on the store's security camera two suspected robbers coming in and pulled out a gun. Albareti fired several shots through the glass that enclosed the counter, hitting one man in the leg. The would-be robbers dropped their gun and fled. The armed Robber later called 911 to get assistance for his wound. The second suspect was later arrested. wral.com

Albuquerque, NM: Costco Burglary suspect charged in $80,000 Diamond Theft
Joseph Romero, 57, s behind bars after police say he hid in the hardware section of the Costco warehouse store near Interstate 25 and Montaño until past closing time and made off with more than $80,000 in diamonds and other goods. Romero is charged with commercial burglary and felony shoplifting in the heist.

However, the accused jewel thief picked up additional charges – of robbery and attempt escape from the custody of a police officer – when deputies say they caught him in a stolen car outside a grocery store and he later tried to escape from the hospital after complaining of chest pains during his arrest. abqjournal.com

Ewa Beach, Hawaii: Security Guard injured during Long Drug’s Robbery
Prosecutors have charged a 26-year-old man in connection with a store robbery in Ewa Beach where a 61-year-old security guard sustained a fractured wrist when he reportedly attempted to stop him. Jamal N. Brown was charged Wednesday with 2nd degree robbery and assault. Police said a suspect later identified as Brown was observed taking an unspecified item from Longs Drugs and leaving the store without paying for the item at about 10:40 p.m. Monday. A security guard responded when Brown allegedly pushed him, causing the man to fall and sustain a fractured left wrist. staradvertiser.com

Dartmouth, MA: Police Arrest Serial Shoplifter
On Sunday, April 22, Police responded to Walmart, officers located 2 males loading numerous stolen items into a vehicle parked in the rear of the building near a fire exit. One of the males, Jason Ferreira, 33, was well known to Dartmouth Police for previous shoplifting incidents. As a result of the subsequent investigation, Ferreira was arrested and charged with larceny over $250 and conspiracy to commit a crime. In addition to these charges, Ferreira also had 3 active arrest warrants, 2 of which were for previous retail theft related incidents. wbsm.com

Greenwich, CT: Suspect in Sephora Robbery arrested
In July of last year, three women and a man entered the Sephora cosmetics shop on Greenwich Avenue, grabbing items off the shelves and stuffing them into a duffel bag. In addition, a shoplifting suspect grabbed a cell phone from a store employee’s hand after she followed them out of the store and video-recorded them. Some $1,500 in merchandise was stolen by the thieves. greenwichtime.com

Owasso, OK: Video of man kicked out of Hibbett Sports 'because of my race' goes viral
Robert Robedeaux, who was shopping at Hibbett Sports on Saturday, Feb. 17, filmed himself being escorted off the property by 3 police officers after store staff called 911 to report he was making them uncomfortable. Robedeaux, a member of the Pawnee Nation, posted the video on his Facebook page on Thursday, April 19, and it has since garnered over 250 shares and hundreds more comments. In the post, the man claims he was wrongfully removed from the store and the staff’s actions were racially motivated. tulsaworld.com

Worcester Business Owner Sentenced for Defrauding Snap and Selling Counterfeit Merchandise
The owner of Esther's Fashion Paradise was sentenced yesterday in federal court in Worcester for defrauding the SNAP benefits program and selling counterfeit merchandise.

Esther Acquaye, 31, of Worcester, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman to eight months in prison, three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $285,075 in restitution. She accepted EBT cards from SNAP recipients wishing to exchange their SNAP benefits for cash and on at least four occasions, Acquaye accepted an EBT card from an undercover investigator as payment for counterfeit retail goods (Michael Kors purses, one counterfeit Gucci purse, one counterfeit The North Face jacket, and one counterfeit Michael Kors wallet). justice.gov

Healthy debate in any industry spurs growth, understanding, and challenges the status quo. Without it the normal evolutionary processes which are slow to begin with slow even further.
