Retail Robberies & Burglaries Up 24% Since 2016
Retail robberies and burglaries in Q1 have jumped nearly 25 percent since 2016, according to publicly reported data (seen in the graph to the right).

There was little change from the number of incidents reported in Q1 2017, but the 2018 numbers indicate that last year's 26% increase wasn't a fluke - retail robberies and burglaries remain high.

Dallas, TX: Community Honors Police Officer Killed in Home Depot shooting
Friends, family members and other folks in the community will honor the life of Dallas Police Department officer Rogelio Santander this week. A public visitation begins Monday for the 27-year-old officer, who was shot and killed while trying to take a man into custody at a Home Depot store last week.

Even some people who did not know Santander personally will likely arrive in North Texas to be at the service on Tuesday and say goodbye. As has been the case with other police funerals over the years, many officers from across the nation will travel to Dallas as a show of support. Police escorted Santander’s body away from the funeral home on Friday, in a somber salute. cbslocal.com

Nike promotes 2 women to replace executives departing amid 'toxic environment'
Nike is moving fairly quickly to replace the many executives who have left in recent weeks amid revelations of improper conduct and a toxic work environment. The company last week promoted Amy Montagne to vice president and general manager of global categories, replacing Jayme Martin, the Portland Business Journal reports.

Additionally, the company promoted Kellie Leonard to chief diversity and inclusion officer, Nike confirmed in a statement emailed to Retail Dive. Leonard replaces Antoine Andrews, who had been Nike’s vice president of diversity and inclusion and whose departure was also part of the exodus in recent weeks. retaildive.com

Subway, Rite Aid, Toys R Us, Teavana:
Retailers closing the most stores in 2018 so far
In April, Subway, the fast food company with the most locations in the world, announced it would be shuttering roughly 500 of those stores in the United States. These closings are just the latest in a stream of announcements by major retailers.

In what many have dubbed the “retail apocalypse,” brick-and-mortar retailers across the United States have been forced to reduce their footprint in order to maintain profitability in recent years.

In the most extreme cases, several well-known brands have had no choice but go out of business entirely. Since the beginning of 2017, major companies, including RadioShack, Payless ShoeSource, Toys “R” Us, and Bon-Ton, have filed for bankruptcy protection. So far, trouble for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers shows no sign of abating. This year, over a dozen well-known companies are shuttering locations nationwide.

In a handful of cases, store closings are the result of corporate mergers and acquisitions. In some cases, companies appear to be merely culling their most unprofitable stores while adding new stores elsewhere. This is the case with Subway, which is opening over 1,000 new locations. However, many retailers on this list are closing locations as a result of falling revenue largely brought on by the convenience and increasing popularity of online shopping. usatoday.com

Retail’s Other Problem: Too Few Clerks in the Store
Jobs being cut at a faster pace than stores
Many of America’s biggest retailers, under assault from Amazon.com Inc., have been slashing staff even faster than they have been closing stores, a dynamic that has left fewer clerks and longer checkout lines at remaining locations.

Despite operating roughly the same number of stores as it did a decade ago, Macy’s has shed 52,000 workers since 2008. At J.C. Penney Co. workers have disappeared twice as fast as department stores. That’s led to an average of 112 total Penney employees for every store today, down from 145 a decade ago, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis.

Similar per-store staff declines occurred over the past decade at Kohl’s Corp., Nordstrom Inc., Target Corp. and Walmart Inc., regardless of whether the retailer opened or closed stores, according to the Journal’s analysis.

Some companies attribute the declining head count to staff cuts at headquarters and a switch to smaller stores that need fewer workers. Others have added technology such as self-checkout lanes or shelf-ready packaging that they say makes existing workers more productive. And still others have hired more full-time workers, eliminating the need for two or three part-timers.

Now, some retailers are discovering they may have gone too far and are beginning to replenish staff—just as the booming U.S. economy is creating historic labor shortages and forcing companies to pay higher wages and offer perks such as better training and benefits. wsj.com

Amazon Prime price increase a response to Trump?
New revenue should cover any USPS fee hikes
Amazon.com Inc's 20 percent hike in the cost of Prime membership should deliver more than $1 billion in extra revenue this year and cover any "rational" hike in United States Postal Service delivery fees, Wall Street analysts said on Friday.

President Donald Trump has been laying into the Seattle-based online shopping firm in recent weeks for what he says is a deal with publicly-owned USPS which effectively lumps much of the cost of thousands of daily deliveries onto U.S. taxpayers.

Trump has said that if USPS raised parcel rates, Amazon would face $2.6 billion in extra cost, although equity analysts who follow billionaire Jeff Bezos' company estimate a much lower number and say the deal may actually be keeping USPS afloat.

Several said that Thursday's move by the company to raise Prime fees to $119 a year from $99 starting June 16 would not faze many of Prime's estimated 60-65 million U.S. members. nytimes.com

Can Tax Reform Provide Life Support for the Retail Market?
In addition to the cut in the corporate rate, retailers may benefit from the reduced rates that individual taxpayers will receive starting in 2018. his will put more money into consumers’ pockets, which retailers hope to translate into more spending at their stores.

Tech retailers also stand to gain in big ways from the TCJA. It is expected that companies will be able to bring back billions of dollars in cash into U.S. operations. What will companies do with all the cash repatriated? Plans to create thousands of new jobs and build new U.S. facilities are in the works.

Many of the provisions under the new tax reform are favorable to the retail industry. Retailers themselves will use the cash from tax savings to invest in their brand and improve the shopping experience intended to create additional sales. Retailers are optimistic that consumers will invest their tax cash savings in their products. It remains to be seen whether the influx of cash from tax savings will be enough to lure shoppers to stores and create the economic boost that many retailers need. cpexecutive.com

Gen Z is about to kill cash - and maybe plastic
From the fourth quarter last year to the first quarter of 2018, (mobile) wallet payment spend rose 114%, the number of transactions has increased 38% and average ticket size is up 55%. That's evidence of four important factors, Dangelmaier said: there's greater acceptance, shoppers are more comfortable, they're having a better checkout experience, and there are more repeat purchases.

When it comes to the ease and expectation of mobile payments, it's not so much that younger consumers, both millennials and Gen Z, have an easier time adapting to new tech and payment methods. It's more that the phone is simply their portal to the world​. There's just no reason to have paper dollars or even plastic cards taking up space in a (physical) wallet when it's all on their phone.

T-Mobile and Sprint finally agreed to a massive telecom merger after years of negotiations punctuated by two breakups. The $26 billion merger, announced Sunday, values Sprint near its current share price of $6.50. The tie-up would position the telecom companies as fiercer competitors to Verizon and AT&T, which have long dominated the US market. nbc-2.com

New York pawn shop owners in suspected ORC operation on eBay

Monroe County sheriff's investigators and officers from the Rochester Police Department executed a search warrant at Mr. Deals pawnshop, 2862 West Henrietta Road, at 1:23 p.m. and confiscated between $200,000 and $300,000 worth of stolen merchandise, Sgt. John Watson said.

The new and boxed property included pet supplies, pet vitamins, tools, electronics, printer ink cartridges and over-the-counter medication, deputies said. The raid came after a six-month investigation.

Watson said the final tally of stolen items will most likely be much higher than the initial estimate released by deputies. Authorities filled two large box trucks with stolen merchandise from the raid, he added.

He said employees at Mr. Deals allegedly sold many of the stolen items through online retailers like eBay. Read more

SEC Fines Yahoo $35 Million Over 2014 Breach
Reminder that SEC will not tolerate breach concealment
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says Yahoo has agreed to a $35 million civil fine to settle accusations that it failed to promptly notify investors about a December 2014 data breach. The enforcement action puts public companies on notice that the SEC doesn't look kindly upon efforts to conceal or downplay data breaches.

But the SEC says that despite Yahoo learning within days of a December 2014 breach that it had been attacked by Russian hackers, the search giant waited nearly two years to disclose the breach to investors.

After Yahoo disclosed the 500 million breached accounts in September 2016, it revised that tally in December 2016 to 1 billion accounts. It also said at that time attackers had forged cookies, allowing them to directly access some accounts. govinfosecurity.com

Navigating the 50-State Patchwork of Data Breach Laws
After Alabama enacted its data breach law in March, all 50 states now have some kind of regulation governing cybersecurity and the responsibilities of a business should anyone gain unauthorized access to the personal information it maintains regarding its customers, employees or other individuals.

The common thread running throughout the patchwork is that individuals, business entities and governments in possession of particular personal information must provide prescribed notices following any unauthorized access to certain personal information. Generally, the notice must be provided to the affected person, though vendors that maintain data on behalf of other business entities must generally notify the other company. The timing of the notice will vary by state.

The data breach law that will apply to a specific situation will be that of the state of residence of the affected individual and not the state in which the company has its office. A business that has customers in all 50 states will have to be familiar with the law in each state to know when it must supply notification to the affected customers. jdsupra.com

Tech vs. training: Where should business focus cybersecurity spending?
Over 60% percent of surveyed cybersecurity professionals said their companies are failing to provide them with appropriate level of training needed to keep up with business and IT risks, according to a recent ESG-ISSA study. Flipkart files FIR against vendor, employee in fake Skechers case
In what could be early signs of a potential legal battle between an e-commerce major and its vendor, Flipkart has filed a first action report (FIR) against Marcowagon Retail Private Limited (MRPL) and one its own employees for cheating, fraud, forgery, and breach of trust. Flipkart, as per people aware of the matter, has accused the vendor and the employee of colluding and selling sub-standard products to the online retailer, including the footwear brand, Skechers . The vendor, however, told TOI, that Flipkart's charges are baseless and that it will take legal action against the e-tailer.

Late last year, Skechers had dragged Flipkart to court for selling counterfeit products under its brand but sources said that both the parties are now trying for an out-of-court settlement on this matter.

Sources said that Flipkart through a third-party forensic audit agency, found MRPL and a company employee were allegedly cheating the e-commerce company by importing sub-standard products at lower prices, while continuing to charge it the rate agreed upon for genuine goods. Flipkart had made all the payments in good faith when the shipments were received, believing them to be genuine, sources in the know said. indiatimes.com

Portland, OR: Suspect Arrested in Connection to $50K Lego
Fencing Operation
The alleged leader of a fencing operation was arrested without incident Thursday and stands accused of stealing $50,000 of Legos and other toys. Raji Afife Azar was under investigation for months after the Fred Meyer Organized Retail Theft unit identified him as the leader in this ongoing activity, Portland police said.

Azar would post ads on Craigslist and OfferUp looking for stolens items he could resell. He met with people who stole the items -- often people addicted to drugs or opioids -- then buy those items for pennies on the dollar, then re-sell those stolen items on Craigslist, eBay and OfferUp, making a large profit in the process. As the investigation unfolded, Azar contacted "sellers" of the stolen items who were actually undercover officers. The "sellers" would sell the items to Azar for a small part of their retail price. Then on Thursday, Azar paid the "sellers" $13,000 for stolen items -- and was then promptly arrested by the officers. After his arrest, police said they got a search warrant for his home in the 2000 block of SE 102nd Avenue. Investigators said they found the Legos and other stolen merchandise, and the Fred Meyer theft unit placed the value at $50,000. Authorities said that figure does not include items stolen from stores other than Fred Meyer. Azar, 40, now faces 10 counts of theft, aggravated theft, laundering a monetary instrument and 15 counts of felony computer crime. oregonlive.com

 


Memphis, TN: Two men rob CVS Pharmacy, steal $44,000 in drugs
Police said one of the men acted as a lookout as the other pointed a revolver at the pharmacist. He demanded the staff open the drug safe. Then the men were able to get away with $44,000 in Xanax, Morphine, Hydrocodone and more. fox13memphis.com

Mansfield, OH: Kroger Market Place cashier short changed $750 during $15,000 transaction
The customer/suspect purchased $15,000 worth of prepaid debit cards. When he handed the cashier the cash, it was about $20 short. The cashier handed the money back to the customer to recount it. On the video it shows the customer quickly pocket around $750 when the cashier looked away then he handed it back to the cashier with $20. The cashier didn't count the money again and placed it in the register. Officers learned from Loss Prevention that the man wearing the same clothing has done this at other Kroger stores in the area. mansfieldnewsjournal.com

Rome, GA: TJ Maxx employee charged with Stealing over $4K of merchandise
Guadalupe Lazcano, was arrested this week after he allegedly helped a man steal over $4,000 worth of merchandise from TJ Maxx in Rome. Reports said that Lazcano, while working as an employee, placed unpaid for merchandise into bags and allowed Frederico Salcendo to walk out of the store with them on numerous occasions. The alleged thefts occurred between November 20, 2017 and April 1, 2018. coosavalleynews.com

Burglary suspects part of organized crime ring; hitting stores in RI, NH and MA
Chepiel Sanchez and Ignacio Duran were arrested Saturday following a cash on I-95. The men broke into a C-Store stealing over $12,000 worth of cigarettes. The merchandise along with $1,000 in stolen cash was found in the crashed car. Sanchez and Duran are "known to be part of an organized commercial burglary ring that is suspected of at least 24 commercial burglaries. Police say the group targets businesses that have ATMs and sell tobacco products. wwlp.com

Update: Somerset County, ME: Suspect in deputy's killing held in maximum-security prison
A man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy was held in the state's maximum-security prison on Sunday pending his initial court appearance. John Williams was transferred to the Maine State Prison in Warren after his arrest on Saturday, the fourth day of a massive manhunt in the central part of the state.

Williams, who's expected in court on Monday or Tuesday, is accused of killing Somerset County Cpl. Eugene Cole, 61, early Wednesday after the two had an encounter on a darkened road in Norridgewock.
Helicopters, tactical vehicles and rifle-toting law enforcement officers poured into the region, putting residents on edge, but that gave way to relief when Williams was taken into custody outside a remote cabin. Shirtless and shoeless when captured, Williams, 29, appeared to be exhausted when he was led out of the woods. wmtw.com

Man arrested with handcuffs of Maine officer he's accused of shooting

Kansas City, MO: Man charged in killing of 7-Eleven Employee
Authorities have charged a suspect in the deadly shooting at a 7-11 convenience store Friday night. Theodist A. Lewis, 31, is charged with 2nd degree murder and armed criminal action. Police said a male victim was shot at the 7-11 on Blue Ridge Blvd. around 11:15 p.m. Friday. He was taken to a hospital where he later died. Initial reports indicated the victim was shot inside the store. Surveillance footage revealed the shooting took place just outside the entrance. fox4kc.com

Tucson, AZ: AutoZone employee Carjacked outside his store was later Killed in a brutal way; 2 suspects in Custody
Timothy Abriola, 66, was struck "in the head with a machete an unknown number of times" and also was stabbed with a knife before his attackers packed him into the back seat of his own car and drove off, said an interim criminal complaint filed early Friday in Pima County Justice Court. One of the two suspects arrested in the case forfeited his right to remain silent and has provided police with in-depth information on how the incident unfolded. tucson.com

Denver, CO: Armed suspect shot, killed by officers outside strip mall
Colorado authorities say police shot and killed an armed suspect at a strip mall in a Denver suburb after officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area. Authorities say Northglenn officers were contacted by officials in nearby Westminster at about 6 p.m. Saturday to advise they were looking for the suspect. A Target store was evacuated on Sunday night when someone made threats over store radios, causing confusion and panic. According to San Antonio police, employees at the store started hearing threats over the two-way radio system at the store on Southwest Military Drive at about 10:30 p.m. The voice on the radio was that of a man who said he was going to shoot up the store and that there were several bombs placed inside the store. Police were called and the store was evacuated while investigators and a K-9 unit searched for any suspicious devices. La Grande, OR: Lost truck driver survives days with no food or water, refused to steal Potato Chips from Cargo
A missing Oregon truck driver survived for four days lost in the wilderness without taking a single item from his cargo – a trailer filled with potato chips. Jacob Cartwright, 22, of La Grande, had been missing since Tuesday, when he was hauling the chips from Portland to Nyssa. He accidentally programmed the wrong destination into his GPS, then fixed the address later after he noticed the mistake. That's when the GPS "directed him to take a U.S. Forest Service road that started out paved but eventually became impassible," the AP reported. His truck then got stuck and his cellphone died.

Roy Henry, Cartwright's manager at Little Trees Transportation, told the AP that the trucker, a father of two, began walking away from the scene, trying to find his way out of the snowy woods. By Saturday, after walking 36 miles with no food or water, Cartwright flagged a passing driver, who gave him a ride home. According to Henry, Cartwright said he didn't take any of the potato chips to eat before he began walking because "that's the load I was hauling and I didn't want to damage the property." whio.com

The arsonist who hit several Albuquerque businesses in 2016 offered no explanation during his sentencing Thursday morning for why he committed his crimes. And David Hickman’s silence, U.S. District Judge Judith Herrera said, was one of the reasons she handed down a 20-year sentence, the maximum allowed under his plea agreement.

Over a 10-night stretch in November 2016, Hickman armed himself with homemade explosives, a rifle and a handgun, dressed in black, and then badly damaged or destroyed nine businesses.
