The Three Next Wave Retail Growth Technologies

By Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer

This post will introduce you to what I believe are the top 3 next wave retail growth technologies. These solutions have both security and operational applications, but because I am attending the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) Asset Protection conference starting this weekend, some security aspects will be emphasized.

You Can Run, but You Cannot Hide

Walking through Paris on a Saturday a couple weeks ago and seeing all the major brands with boarded-up windows was a stark reminder that violence is a global challenge. There is consensus when I ask the question either directly or in executive forums that I have hosted around the world that retail violence is what keeps most security professionals up at night.

In the United States, violence in retail stores has been a growing issue for some time. In 2018, D&D Daily reported the USA retail industry had 488 violent deaths, up 15% from the previous year. Forty-two percent of the deaths were customers and 19% were store associates.

Quarterly comparisons for Q1/2019 had deaths up 12% with 50% being customers and 22% being store associates.

The Hard Truth About Soft Skills
"Hard skills will get you the interview - soft skills will get you the job."

"We have all seen situations where the decision to hire—when two or more candidates present the same level of hard skills' strength—is made with soft skills as the differentiator."

"The most important soft skill is communication. It's the foundation of every other soft skill. "In my experience, communication skills are paramount to one's capability to execute and deliver the day-to-day requirements of leadership and having oversight for a team, small or large," Bayne says.

"In this fast-paced business environment, the ability to communicate clear and concise messages is crucially important," Lammert explains.

"In general, those who achieve the greatest success in their careers have a genuine interest in those around them and are skilled in communicating," Snipes says.

Besides communication skills, emotional intelligence has become an important attribute for candidates in the current job market.

Emotional intelligence (often abbreviated as EQ) is the ability to perceive another's emotions, reactions and perspective, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. In the world of management, it has many applications. These include working well as a teammate, empathetic listening, building consensus and an ability to be persuasive and to motivate. shrm.org

Opioid company executives found guilty of racketeering
Five top executives of Insys Therapeutics -- maker of Subsys, a version of the extremely powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl -- were found guilty Thursday on federal racketeering charges for bribing doctors to prescribe the painkiller to people who didn't need it. They were also convicted of defrauding Medicare and private insurance.

The trial put on display sales tactics such as lap dances to lure doctors and a company vice president who dressed as a Subsys bottle and rapped during a company promo.

The jury took 15 days to reach its verdict against the executives, including founder and one-time billionaire John Kapoor. Other defendants include Richard Simon, 48, the former national director of sales; Sunrise Lee, 38, a former regional sales director; Joseph Rowan, 45, a former regional sales director; and Michael Gurry, 55, the former vice president of managed markets. cnn.com

How Card-Not-Present Fraud and Chargebacks Impact Restaurant Operators
More and more restaurants offer delivery and “buy-online, pick up in-store,” or BOPUS, as it’s increasingly described. Many even have their own branded mobile app to streamline the customer experience.

More automation in the ordering and checkout process, combined with reduced face-to-face interaction between cardholders and merchants, can open the door for errors, misunderstandings and even criminal fraud. Errors and fraud in card-not-present transactions inevitably lead to chargebacks.

This change in the restaurant industry landscape was sudden and dramatic. If we look at data as recent as 2013, we see merchants in the food and beverage industry reported almost no chargebacks. Things looked very different, though, when we conducted our State of Chargebacks 2018 survey just five years later.

Our study found that 28 percent of respondents in the food and beverage industry had a chargeback rate between 0.5 and 1 percent of all transactions. One in ten respondents had a chargeback rate above 1 percent. restauranttechnologynews.com

Walmart's New Workplace: Gold Stars, ‘Attitude Cards’ and Cheers
Walmart in some 75 stores is piloting a new store-level management structure it's calling "Great Workplace," Bloomberg, and other media outlets, reported. The changes entail having smaller teams taking on more responsibility and getting more training, with pay jumps in hourly wages and salaries for supervisors, according to the report. The new approach is now centered at the retail giant's Neighborhood Market grocery stores, which are smaller than its flagships and its supercenters, but next month will expand to certain departments at 50 of those larger locations. bloomberg.com

Walmart employees share the wildest returns they've ever seen
Walmart employees are no strangers to bizarre returns. The company's returns policy varies based on department and whether or not you've made your purchase online or in the store. But a number of Walmart employees have spoken to Business Insider about their run-ins with "serial returners," fraudsters, and shoppers who brought back gross, used products.

Here are some of the most ridiculous returns that Walmart employees said they've seen:

● A Walmart associate saw a shopper return "a pair of underwear that was already worn."

● A Walmart associate from Tennessee described seeing a customer return a product from Kmart. "It was accepted with the Kmart sticker on it," the associate said.

● A Walmart associate said they often witness a group come in to return expensive electric toothbrushes, claiming that "they were a gift from my mom/sister/boyfriend but I don't need it."

● A different Walmart associate said they saw someone try to get a refund on "a gallon of out-of-date milk from Kroger."

● An employee said that they'd received a "used" positive pregnancy test at the returns desk.

● One Walmart associate described seeing numerous air conditioners being returned after the summer months, as well as electric heaters brought back for a refund in the spring. businessinsider.com

California startup sells 'world's first' bulletproof hoodie, including kids sizes
Wonder Hoodie, a southern California startup, sells a product its founder wishes didn't have to exist-- a bulletproof hoodie. Like many young tech workers, 25-year-old Vy Tran decided to create something she needed but couldn't find. In 2016, her neighbor in her hometown of Seattle, was walking home when a man shot her dead, after an attempted robbery.

With a background in material science, she prototyped designs and sent them for testing. When her products met National Institute of Justice requirements for body armor, she founded her company in 2018 and started selling the gear-- a hoodie, a jean jacket, a vest and other accessories that start at $450.

The reality of getting caught in random gunfire has given rise to an industry of bulletproof gear, designed for people who likely never thought about tactical armor in the past -- parents, teachers, kids. You can now find bulletproof backpacks, portable shelters and plate inserts all over the web. abc30.com

Post Office wants to shift focus to package deliveries
The U.S. Postal Service has introduced a plan that would see it cutting mail delivery from six to five days a week while expanding packaging deliveries to seven days. The move, according to the USPS, would better reflect market conditions and save billions of dollars a year. Republican and Democratic members of Congress, however, are opposed to making a change to mail deliveries. retailwire.com

Facebook Building Cryptocurrency-Based Payments System
Pitch to retailers includes break on transaction fees

Facebook Inc. is recruiting dozens of financial firms and online merchants to help launch a cryptocurrency-based payments system on the back of its gigantic social network.

The effort, should it succeed, threatens to upend the traditional, lucrative plumbing of e-commerce and would likely be the most mainstream application yet of cryptocurrency. It comes as the social-media giant is under intense pressure from regulators, users and shareholders to address privacy shortcomings.

At the heart of the initiative, under way for more than a year and code-named Project Libra, is a digital coin that its users could send to each other and use to make purchases both on Facebook and across the internet, according to people familiar with the matter.

The pitch to merchants is a break on fees. Facebook envisions eliminating swipe and other card processing fees that merchants pay on transactions, which are typically around 2% to 3% and are collected by banks, payments processors and networks such as Visa. wsj.com

Retail and Restaurant POS Attacks: “Why me?”
The attacks are not just of large chains or massive resorts. They experience problems too. The sad fact is that a lot of small, mom-and-pop retail outlets and restaurants are attacked and compromised every month.

For the bad-actors, it’s a game of numbers. The more sites they attack; the more data they steal; the greater the spoils or their efforts. In a recent case, where we examined a small restaurant POS system, the bad-actors actually activated the local security controls so that they could keep other attackers out of the system they compromised. paymentsjournal.com

Assessing Fraud Strategies in E-Commerce Businesses
Despite a reported increase in fraud budgets, Experian’s 2019 Global Identity & Fraud Report found 55 percent of businesses across the globe experienced an increase in online fraud-related losses, which emphasizes the need for e-commerce merchants to assess the effectiveness of their card-not-present fraud detection strategies.

According to Chris Ryan, Experian’s senior fraud solutions consultant, the primary challenge for e-commerce risk professionals is the consumer demand for convenience. “E-commerce merchants are often limited in the tools that can be used because of the demand for those tools to be primarily invisible to the individual consumer.”

When it comes to more covert tools, Ryan said there have been some exciting wins lately. “For the most part, the activity between the individual and e-retailer is inconsistent, which makes it harder to collect that data of user behavior on the merchant side.”

As a result, e-retailers need to rely on a set of layered tools that get to the right prediction by combining patterns of behavior that are associated with an identity. “Covert tools that monitor the consumer’s pattern of behavior everywhere can detect when that behavior diverges from merchant to merchant,” Ryan said. cardnotpresent.com

Opinion: Could New eCommerce Fraud Rules Separate the Best from the Rest in 2019?
Last year, PSD2 and GDPR were the two most prominent topics in the conversations around data privacy regulations. Now in 2019, the discussion around the applicable use of consumer information isn't expected to wane - if anything, it is only getting louder.

The mandated adoption of Strong Consumer Authentication (SCA) is coming September 2019 as a part of PSD2, requiring additional layers of authentication to allow specific types of transactions.

By collecting and sharing information behind the scenes during online transactions, financial institutions and their merchant customers should become increasingly better at spotting and stopping potential fraud.

However, the standard will also measure the quality of merchants' data and if too much fraudulent activity has occurred, they'll need to add barriers in the payments process to right the ship and provide adequate security for customers. Equally, new PSD2 regulation has clauses that outline if certain fraud rates aren’t met by card issuers, some transactions on their cards will have to be authenticated.

Could such requirements establish an even wider divide between the merchants and issuers that can offer frictionless payments and the ones who can't? infosecurity-magazine.com

The e-mail world may have sped up the world and allowed people to communicate virtually instantly, but it's not the forum to resolve issues between people. If anything, the freedom an email offers insofar as the ability to write whatever best suits your points and usually with an added pinch of sarcasm may, in fact, deepen the crevasse and cause more harm. It's much easier to write in solitude than to face your intended recipient and their immediate response. So the next time you receive one of those OMG emails, think twice before responding because you never know who else may be reading and, after all, if you truly want to resolve an issue with a person, you need to do it the old fashion way -- face to face.

Just a Thought,
Gus

Gus Downing
