Nike CEO apologizes for 'boys' club' culture in company-wide meeting
Nike CEO Mark Parker called a rare company-wide staff meeting at the company's
Beaverton-area headquarters Thursday and apologized to employees for allowing a
culture where staff members were excluded and workplace complaints of
inappropriate behavior were dismissed, according to

The meeting occurred after at least six Nike executives and senior managers,
including a former Nike brand president, were forced out of the sneaker empire
since March after reports of years of sexist behavior by male employees against

Insider Threat: Why Physical Security Still Reigns
With all of the attention placed on cybersecurity, where has physical security
gone? Have we gotten too far away from the basic “blocking and tackling” that
enterprise security is built upon, which has enabled it to effectively reduce
risk within the enterprise? Do Boards of Directors still understand the critical
role that physical security still plays in the enterprise?
We often think of insider threat as occurring in the context of a theft of
information, of data or confidential information. But it can also be the person
with access to your facilities or premises who causes physical harm. And then we
typically start to characterize that more in using language around workplace
violence rather than insider threat. Yes, I think that small incidents can often
be indicators of stresses that might lead to bigger problems down the line if
they’re not addressed early.
Overall, the reason that cybersecurity gets so much play is because I think
that’s where the Board sees the highest headline risk and the greatest potential
impact on a stock price. Insider threat is right up there, as well, and the
publicity can be terrible if one of your own people does something that ends up
in the newspaper.”
“Employees are still taking print documents out of enterprises, and that
requires an investigation. In almost every single investigation of an insider
threat that we have seen, hard copy evidence is found to have been taken.” he
says.

Executive Protection Success Hinges on Investigative Talents
With a 24-hour news cycle and social media, inflammatory stories and even
personal information about an executive can spread worldwide. Negative messages
that affect your enterprise’s brand and reputation can face the same fate.
In an enterprise with a robust Executive Protection (EP) program, it is the job
of that team to ensure the physical safety of the principal and also the
principal’s and his or her organization’s reputations. A large part of that task
lies with a strong Protective Intelligence program that conducts thorough and
continual threat assessments. And an important part of any threat assessment
team is a skilled investigator.
There’s a large gap in EP missions – in the pre-event and travel planning areas.
Proper protective intelligence is rarely utilized, he says, and in many cases,
that exposes the client and any traveling party to unnecessary risk. This is
where strong investigative skills are crucial, as the role of a trained, skilled
investigator or analyst should not be overlooked. A good protective intelligence
process can identify potential hostile actors; identify security and safety
concerns; aid in developing emergency response procedures; and identify
potential logistical challenges in such things as vehicle routes, lodging
arrangements, arrivals and departures, entry and egress points at various
venues, luggage control and security, and areas to avoid. The two most important
things for an effective EP mission is to ensure the client’s physical safety and
protect their brand/reputation, North says. Thorough protective intelligence by
an experienced investigator or analyst is invaluable in this regard.

De Blasio Moves to Bring Safe Injection Sites to New York City
Safe injection sites have been considered successful in cities in Canada and

Former Netflix, Inc. VP Charged In Kickback Schemes To Defraud
Defendant accused of taking kickbacks from companies seeking to do business
with Netflix
Michael Kail, 49, of Los Gatos, accepted kickbacks in exchange for approving
payments to at least nine tech companies that were seeking to do business
with Netflix. The indictment alleges that between February 2012 and July 2014,
Kail, formerly a Netflix Vice President in charge of the company’s Internet
Technology department, executed a scheme to defraud Netflix of its right to
Kail’s employment without conflicts of interest resulting in bribes or
kickbacks, commonly known as honest services fraud.
Kail received over $500,000 from at least three outside companies with which
Netflix did business. Kail further sought and received valuable stock options
from numerous other Netflix business partners. In exchange for these payments,
Kail allegedly approved millions of dollars in contracts for goods and services
to be provided to Netflix by these companies. The indictment alleges Kail
created and controlled a limited liability company, Unix Mercenary LLC, to
receive these kickback payments, which he used to pay personal expenses and to
purchase a residence in Los Gatos, Calif.
If convicted, Kail faces a maximum sentence of twenty years in prison and a fine
of $1,000,000, or twice his gross gain or twice the gross loss to Netflix,
whichever is greater, for each count of wire or mail fraud, and ten years in
prison and a fine of $250,000 for each count of money laundering.

Pentagon Orders Stores on Military Bases to Remove Huawei, ZTE Phones
The Pentagon is moving to halt the sale of phones made by Huawei Technologies
Co. and ZTE Corp. ZTCOY -15.37% in retail outlets on U.S. military bases around
the world, citing potential security threats they say the devices could pose.
“Huawei and ZTE devices may pose an unacceptable risk to the department’s
personnel, information and mission,“ said Army Maj. Dave Eastburn, a Pentagon
spokesman, in a statement. “In light of this information, it was not prudent for
the department’s exchanges to continue selling them.” He was referring to the
retail outlets at or near military installations in the U.S. and overseas that
cater to American soldiers and sailors.
According to people familiar with the matter, military officials fear the
Chinese government could track the whereabouts of soldiers and could let spies
learn about base operations, or know when troops attend off-base gatherings, for
example.

EEOC Sues Albertsons
Banning Employees from Speaking Spanish in front of non-Spanish Speakers
Albertsons grocery stores violated the rights of Hispanic employees in San Diego
with a policy forbidding workers to speak Spanish around non-Spanish speakers —
even when conversing with each other during breaks or helping Spanish-speaking
customers, according to a new lawsuit.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Albertsons Companies,
Inc., on Thursday in federal court. The lawsuit accuses the Idaho-based chain of
discriminating against Hispanic employees at San Diego-area stores, harassing
them and subjecting them to a hostile workplace because of their race or country
of origin.

That’s according to an annual survey by Morning Consult that ranks the
nation’s biggest brands based on brand favorability. Amazon claimed the
No. 4 spot, with an overall rating of 76, and Home Depot came in at No. 15,

RSA CTO: 'Modernization Can Breed Malice'
InteropITX 2018 — Las Vegas — In a room packed with business technology
executives, RSA CTO Zulfikar Ramzan discussed the reality of today's
cybersecurity landscape and the threats IT organizations should have at top
of mind as they adopt new tech like machine learning.
"No organization exists as an isolated entity," said Ramzan in his keynote
presentation. "The ripples of chaos can spread farther and faster now, as
technology connects us in remarkably astonishing ways … in cybersecurity,
they're quite prevalent."
Now, board members can see their careers fall apart following a cyber incident.
In a world like that, Ramzan noted, we need to think less about security
trends and more about the drivers: modernization of technology, malice of
threat actors, and mandates forcing organizations to tie their business value to
the strength of their security posture.

Zippy's Restaurants suffers POS data breach
The Hawaii-based Zippy's Restaurants reported that for four months its
point-of-sale system at 25 of its locations had been compromised exposing
customer data. The company, which operates fast-food restaurants under the
Zippy's Restaurant, Napoleon's Bakery, Kahala Sushi, and Pearl City Sushi names,
said in a statement to its customers that from November 23, 2017, to March 29,
2018, its payment card system exposing information. The chain was informed on
April 4 of the breach by an independent computer forensic expert and began
corrective measures. This includes upgrading system hardware, changing the way
certain software and system processes work, and further enhancing system
security and monitoring.

Is face recognition ready to make its mark in retail?
The value for face recognition is eliminating friction. A unique face can
validate a user’s identity with a second factor being a specific mobile device
being physically located on that person.
Compared to other forms of biometric security, including fingerprint and retinal
scans, face recognition technologies can be implemented without significant
overhead costs. In many instances, a user can upload a photo through a mobile
app. In others, such at the point of sale in a retail environment, a customer
can be photographed with an affordable USB camera connected to a point of sale
terminal. These same cameras can be used to verify identity during
additional interactions.
Many have concerns over using face recognition for security, which should not be
minimized. However, precedents have been set by previous emerging technologies
once considered to be risky. Purchasing coffee using a mobile app. Paying for
items with a mobile phone at point of sale terminals. Rewards programs that
deliver a higher level of service. Agreeing to background checks to avoid
security lines at the airport.
Agreeing to participate in these services is optional, as should any use of face
recognition technology. If it eliminates friction from a consumer’s life,
they will most likely opt-in as have been already proven. If consumers
feel any technology, including face recognition is risky, they won’t adopt it.

Encryption is Necessary, Tools and Tips Make It Easier
Encryption is not merely an option — it's a necessity for enterprise security
In the InteropITX conference, a speaker provided tips, tools, and incentives
for moving to pervasive encryption in the enterprise.
Encryption is critical and encryption can be complicated. Fortunately,
there are tips, techniques, and information tools that can help reduce the
difficulty and make proper encryption more achievable and affordable for most
organizations.
Avoiding having company computers and IoT devices become part of an attacker's
weaponized network is just one of the reasons he gave for encrypting as much
data (and data traffic) as possible. Many of the other reasons involve
regulations.
May 25, 2018 is the day that GDPR begins to be enforced. It has a lot to say
about protecting data and notifying customers if unprotected data is breached.
On April 16, NIST introduced the Cybersecurity Framework 1.1. The framework is
quite prescriptive regarding best practices for building encryption into an
enterprise process. That makes it and PCI DSS — another highly prescriptive
standard — especially valuable resources for enterprise data security
professionals.
Beyond the various regulations regarding encryption and data, there are
frameworks and tools that help organizations understand how to go about
protecting data both at rest and in transit.
In addition to the large frameworks and regulations, Pabrai argued in favor of a
low-tech tool and basic strategy for dealing with encryption.
The low-tech tool is a spreadsheet listing every possible enterprise attack
surface (data base, mobile devices, IoT, etc.) and whether the state of
encryption is yes, no, or unknown. He said that this tool allows him to
understand the basic security stance of an organization in a matter of minutes
during the initial encounter.
The basic strategy is taking the argument for wide-spread encryption — that it
dramatically reduces risk exposure — to the executive committee with questions
about why they would want to take this critical step.
There's no doubt that encryption requires investment, Pabrai said, but compared
to the financial risk of unprotected data it is an investment that makes sense
for practically every organization.

Jeff Bezos doesn’t care if you think Amazon is too powerful

Tuesday, Amazon abruptly suspended construction on the buildout of
additional office real estate in its hometown of Seattle. The company said it
was waiting to see how the city council votes this month on a proposal
that would tax Amazon and other big Seattle employers about $500 per local
employee.
In ordinary times, a leverage game like this one between a city’s biggest
employer and its government leaders might be viewed as a hardball negotiating
tactic and nothing more.
But these are not ordinary times — certainly not for Amazon. The Seattle-based
e-commerce giant is facing a growing narrative, supported by President Donald
Trump, that it has grown far too powerful. But instead of maintaining a low
profile, Amazon has opted to stop, pose and flex all of those muscles that it
has built up over two-plus decades in Seattle.
An Amazon spokesperson told the New York Times that the company was pausing
“construction planning” of a new giant office building “pending the outcome of
the head tax vote by City Council.” The company was also “evaluating options” to
rent out space to others in another building it planned to take over, the paper
reported.
These are not the actions of a company that is concerned about the perception of
being too powerful. Nor was the cross-country HQ2 contest for its new
headquarters, which has been a brilliant marketing campaign, but one that also
comes across as out of touch with the power disparity it puts on display.
Amazon continues to act like it’s invincible. It better hope it’s right.

A misconfigured MongoDB database has led to the leak of names, email and
physical addresses, wallet information, encrypted passwords, and driver’s
license and passport numbers of 25,000 early investors in Bezop. The leak deals
a second security-related blow in months to the e-commerce startup, which hopes
to give retail giant Amazon a run for its money by fashioning its business
around digital currency.
Bezop is a decentralized blockchain-powered commerce platform, similar in some
ways to Amazon, that hopes to be “the future of global trade,” according to its

Update: Fergus Falls, MN: 6 identified in Multi-State ORC ring; Nearly $400,000
taken from Walmart stores
It’s the story of a multi-state electronics theft ring which spanned six states
and left Walmart stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota
and Minnesota with a combined loss of nearly $400,000. After at least six months
of extensive investigations by countless agencies across the midwest, the
operation appears to have been brought to an end three months after the suspects
made their final heist in Fergus Falls. Now, with six individuals being
identified, local law enforcement are pulling the wraps off of the story behind

King of Prussia, PA: Police investigate $112,000 worth of high-end handbags
stolen from King of Prussia Mall
Surveillance pictures show a woman and four men Upper Merion Police hope you can
help them identify. They say the group worked together to steal $112,000 worth
of high-end handbags from stores at King of Prussia Mall. Police say there have
been three incidents so far. One happened in December and the most recent two
happened in April. "There was a threat of violence by one of the individuals
toward a store employee," said Detective Rathfon.

Monroe, LA: Target cashier accused of stealing nearly $17K in three days

Target Cashier has been arrested after he was accused of stealing nearly $17K in
merchandise with a co-conspirator. Dionza Dominique Brown, 28, was arrested
Tuesday. Monroe Police responded to Target in reference to an organized retail
theft complaint. Target’s Loss Prevention Manager said he found 22 separate
incidents since March 30, 2018 where Dionza Brown had committed retail theft by
having certain persons come to the register where he was working as a cashier.
The manager advised Brown would ring up the merchandise and have his
co-conspirators swipe a card that he know would be declined. The manager said
Brown would then give the voided transaction register tape to the co-conspirator
who would walk out of Target with the merchandise without paying for it. The
manager said Brown was seen on camera completing the 22 fraudulent transactions
that totaled $16,664.40.

Beachwood, OH: $17,000 Of Stolen Property Found On 2 Shoplifters at Beachwood
Place
More than $17,000 of stolen merchandise was found inside a car at Beachwood
Place Mall, police said. The vehicle belonged to two men who were arrested for
shoplifting inside on Wednesday. It appears the duo also had an open container
of alcohol in their possession. Both men were arrested for felony receiving
stolen property.

Vietnamese National Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud, Identity Theft, and Money
Laundering Scheme
Nguyen and his co-conspirators created fraudulent accounts on multiple auction
websites, or used stolen usernames and passwords to take over subscribers’
legitimate accounts. They then posted popular goods for sale at a discounted
price, including Apple merchandise, electronics, personal care items and books.
However, Nguyen and his co-conspirators did not own or otherwise have these
goods to sell. Instead, when customers of the auction websites purchased and
paid for these items, Nguyen and his co-conspirators used stolen payment card
and personally identifiable information to buy the items from Walmart.com or
other e-commerce websites, and then shipped the items to the auction website
customers.
To obtain the proceeds of the scheme, Nguyen and his co-conspirators recruited
U.S. residents to withdraw and wire overseas the money that the unwitting
customers had paid through the auction websites. In total, Nguyen and his
co-conspirators stole and re-sold approximately $500,000 in consumer goods.

Nashville, TN: Man charged with homicide in fatal shooting at Nashville's Opry
Mills Mall
Metro Nashville Police said a suspected gunman is being charged with criminal
homicide after one person died in a shooting at Opry Mills Mall following a
dispute on Thursday. Police said two or three people were involved in a physical
dispute. One of the men fired at least two shots, striking the victim in the
hallway across from the Old Navy store. Police said Demarco Churchwell, 22, of
Nashville, died after being taken to Skyline Medical Center. Police said the
suspected shooter. 22-year-old Justin Golson of Antioch, was arrested and is
facing criminal homicide charges.

Gastonia, NC: Man shot outside Eastridge Mall
Gastonia Police detectives are looking for two suspects in an afternoon shooting
in front of the Belk department store entrance facing New Hope Road at Eastridge
Mall. Police say a man was shot in the chest area around 4:54 p.m. Thursday and
then driven to the hospital by a private vehicle. Gastonia Police Sgt. Nancy
Capistran said officers are trying to talk to witnesses who may have seen the
shooting.

The Montgomery County Sheriff said Dayton have a juvenile gang problem,
and those gangs are responsible for some of the recent phone and gun store
break-ins. Sheriff Phil Plummer said there are 6 gangs in the Dayton area with
100 members who have been responsible for the various crimes, including the

UK: Surge in number of assaults and threats against Retailers
The number of assaults and threats committed against the wholesale and
retail sector has risen significantly over the last year, according to The Home
Office 2017 Commercial Victimisation Survey (CVS). It reported they increased
from 524 incidents per 1,000 premises to 1,433 incidents per 1,000 premises. The
CVS also reported that wholesale and retail premises experienced around 8.1
million crimes over the last year, rising from 5.2 million in 2016. Almost two
thirds of these incidents (61%) were attributed to theft by customers. The

Accepting criticism and feedback is probably one of the hardest things to do
especially if it's unexpected or from an individual or group that's not really
informed well enough to offer constructive criticism. Coming from our superiors
or client's criticism and feedback can truly be valuable and help mold the path
a person needs to take in changing or modifying behavior and improving
relationships. It all boils down to whether or not you're willing to accept it
and really hear what they're saying or not saying. It's human nature to
