Retailers Make ‘Dirty Dozen’ Unsafe Workplace List
Top-Ranked Amazon Pushes Back
Amazon, Lowe’s and Tesla are among the firms on a list of employers with unsafe
workplaces published by a federation of labor, health and safety groups.
The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH) released
its annual “The
Dirty Dozen” employers of 2018 last week in observance of Workers’ Memorial
Week, honoring workers who lost their lives on the job and those who have
suffered workplace injuries and illnesses.
According to National COSH, the “dirty dozen” for 2018 and the reason they are
under scrutiny are:
1. Amazon
– Seattle, Washington: Seven workers killed at Amazon warehouses since 2013 –
including three workers within five weeks at three separate locations in 2017.
(Amazon has pushed back. See reply below.)
3. Dine Brands Global, Inc. (IHOP and Applebee’s)
– Glendale, California: Demands for sex, groping, threats of violence against
workers. More than 60 complaints about sexual and harassment and abuse.
5. Lowe’s Home Improvement
– Mooresville, North Carolina: 56 U.S. deaths are linked to exposure to paint
strippers containing methylene chloride, including 17 workers who died while
refinishing bathtubs. The retail giant still sells products with this deadly
substance, despite appeals from workers, consumers and families.
Workplace deaths in the U.S. are on the rise. According to the latest
information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were
5,190 deaths from workplace trauma in 2016,
an increase of seven percent from 2015 and a 12 percent increase since 2012.
In reply to the listing, Melanie Etches, PR manager for Amazon out of London,
emailed Insurance Journal to tout the company’s workplace safety program. She
said the company integrates safety metrics and audits into operational meetings,
new hire orientation, process training and new process development.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter Bernice King, CEO of The King Center, reacted
to a News & Observer report of a black man choked and slammed by a North
Carolina police officer at a Waffle House by calling for people to avoid the
restaurant chain until it commits to employee training and other changes.
In a tweet on Thursday, King wrote: "Family,
let's stay out of Waffle House until the corporate office legitimately and
seriously commits to 1. discussion on racism, 2. employee training and 3. other
plans to change; and until they start to implement changes."

Starbucks changes bathroom policy following racial firestorm
Starbucks is opening its bathrooms to everyone regardless of whether they've
bought anything following the arrest last month of two African American men at
one of its coffee shops in Philadelphia.
Chairman Howard Schultz says he doesn't want the company to become a public
bathroom, but feels employees can make the "right decision a hundred percent of
the time," if that choice is removed at the store level.

Nike co-founder Phil Knight is "proud" of how company dealt with harassment
allegations
Nike was recently embroiled in a workplace scandal amid allegations of sexual
harassment and discrimination. At least six top executives resigned or left the
company thereafter. Asked about the allegations and how the company is doing,
Knight said, "Overall how Nike is doing is, we're doing fine."
"Sales and earnings are growing, but we did have a shock within the last couple
of months that certain number of managers were bullying employees and it was a
shock to me personally and to a lot of the upper management. And it's
disappointing as well as a shock. It's very disappointing, but I am proud of the
company and the way it responded to the problems that it saw and it's basically
cleaning house for those people," Knight said.

ISIS Movie Stunt Doesn't Go Over Well
Tehran, Iran: Actors Storm Crowded Mall Dressed as ISIS Militants
The
plan was to harmlessly promote "Damascus Time," a new film about an Iranian
father and son who travel to Syria to deliver humanitarian supplies and then get
kidnapped by the Islamic State. Actors dressed as Islamic State fighters would
show up at a large shopping mall and cinema in Tehran on Monday night and
jovially pose for photos with passersby.
Then the actors decided to take the publicity stunt to the next level.
Wielding fake guns and swords, they stormed the mall, shouted "Allahu akbar" and
pretended to wage an attack. One even rode through the building on a horse.
Unsurprisingly, it didn't go over well.
While some shoppers realized it was prank and took selfies with the group,
others reportedly screamed and ran for their lives, thinking the mall was really
under attack.
The spoof was supposed to garner popular interest for "Damascus Time," but it
resulted in so much backlash on Iranian social media that director Ebrahim
Hatamikia had to apologize.

C-Stores Beware - Easiest Place in Retail to Find Illegal Workers
In case you missed it, when it comes to immigration enforcement, there's a
new sheriff in town and his name is Donald Trump. Say what you want about
his administration but, when it comes to its approach to immigration, it has
been very out front, very outspoken and very consistent.
For convenience store owners and operators, there should be no lack of
clarity about the enforcement environment in which we currently find
ourselves.
Recently, I came across an excellent guide from NACS, the Association for
Convenience & Fuel Retailing, that gives operators some good advice on how
to prepare and inoculate themselves. I have included
the link here.
If operators are going to successfully defend themselves against enforcement
agencies or immigration lawyers looking to make a quick dollar, they are
going to have to demonstrate that they have done everything reasonable in
their power to identify undocumented workers.
We know ICE is coming. We know what they are looking for. We know it's not a
question of if, but when. Operators would be smart not to roll the dice on
this one and bet it will never be their turn.

Cincinnati, OH: Who's minding the store when it comes to retail food stamp
fraud?
Retail food stamp fraud has occurred for years in Ohio without the federal
government knowing about it, the I-Team has discovered. The Department of
Agriculture says it has a high-tech network that can identify possible fraud,
then alert investigators. But an I-Team investigation revealed that federal
agents in Ohio have learned about years of fraud from informants, not the
taxpayer-funded system designed to alert them. Authorities said the fraud at
U.S. Beef amounted to $906,000. On a national scale, food stamp fraud
documented by the federal government totaled $560 million last year and $592
million in 2016 – out of $63 billion in benefits.

Madison, MS: All retail locations required to have external security cameras
In 2017, a new ordinance went into effect in Madison requiring external security
cameras on the buildings of retail locations. Existing business were given until
March 2018 to come into compliance. The idea for the ordinance came after the
police department found that a lot of businesses did not have any external
cameras in the entry areas or parking areas. They also found that the businesses
that did have cameras didn’t know how to work the system or the cameras had
stopped working.

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial to Honor 360 Fallen Officers
On May 13, 2018 at 8:00 pm at the National Mall, 360 fallen law enforcement
officers will be honored during the 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil as part of
National Police Week 2018.
There is no bigger crisis in law enforcement than an officer who has been killed
in the line of duty. That crisis repeated itself 129 times in 2017. This number
represents a ten percent decrease over 2016 when 143 officers died in the line
of duty.

Two vendors now sell iPhone cracking technology - and police are buying
Law enforcement interest in iPhone encryption-cracking hardware from two new
companies is a strong indication that Apple no longer claims the mobile security
high ground.
In February,
reports surfaced that an Israel-based technology vendor, Cellebrite, had
discovered a way to unlock encrypted iPhones running iOS 11 and were marketing
the product to law enforcement and private forensics firms around the world.
According to a police warrant obtained by Forbes, the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security had been testing the technology.
Shortly thereafter, Grayshift emerged as a different company that had
developed an inexpensive black box that could unlock any iPhone; this week
Motherboard reported that local and regional U.S. police departments and the
federal government have been purchasing the technology.

New iPhone feature could make it tougher for cops to unlock criminals' devices
There's a new twist in the long-running cat-and-mouse game between Apple and law
enforcement. A new feature, which first emerged in an early beta version of the
company's iPhone and iPad software but never made it to market, has emerged
again in the latest beta.
Law enforcement have long complained that they need access to locked devices to
help with their investigations. But security experts have decried efforts by the
government to lobby for backdoors, arguing that hackers could also get that same
access and use it for their own gain.

Shrinking The Shrinkage Problem With Biometric Network Surveillance
A guy walks into a pharmacy, does a lap and walks out without buying anything.
An hour later, he walks into another location of the same chain pharmacy two
miles down the road and does the same lap, again not buying anything. And in
another hour, he does the same routine at yet another location two more miles
down the road, still buying nothing.
That’s pretty suspicious, but the individual pharmacies involved are unlikely to
recognize it as such, even if they review security footage. After all, the guy
was only there for five minutes, and he didn’t go back to the same pharmacy
throughout the day, so employees at the second and third location don’t get the
benefit of anything that may have been observed by employees at the first.
Otto Lowe, CFO at DeepCam,
says that’s why network intelligence is needed: a video surveillance system
across chain retailers that doesn’t just catch suspicious activity in one store
at a time, but identifies patterns, trends and repeat actors across multiple
locations and large populations.
Lowe listed two scenarios where a security network can help chain retailers.
First, in the event of organized retail crime: This isn’t just an individual
with sticky fingers, he said. These are gangs that have shopping lists and know
what they can resell quickly for cash. Gangs will systematically hit chain
retailers over and over in different locations.
With traditional video surveillance, each store discovers the faces and
intentions of that gang when it comes through their doors. But with network
surveillance, every store in a geographic area can have that intelligence as
soon as the gang hits store No. 1 - and with biometric identification driven
by artificial intelligence, the system itself can raise the red flag when gang
members enter another store, rather than relying on human managers and cashiers
to recognize criminals.
In short, there is a network benefit once a face is known, said Lowe, and from
there, the retailer can take action according to company policies. Facial
recognition and artificial intelligence work together across the network to
identify potential issues and bring them to the chain’s attention early.

Imagine durable and agile robots being equipped with advanced algorithms,
processing and intelligent sensors. It opens up a vast new security landscape in
which human threat is minimized and remote locations and perspectives heretofore
inaccessible become available for real-time analysis, evaluation, and response.
Eventually, as the devices become more refined and prices plummet, the
applications will be vast. In the meantime, varieties of AI are likely to
infiltrate most aspects of our daily lives.
“Machines taking over low-cognitive tasks will be the big trend for years,” says
Milestone Systems’ Keven Marier. “Amazon is applying this to retail stores
where the checkout concept is being replaced by customers just walking out.
This type of thinking and tool creation is in its earliest infancy but will
continue to address problems and add value. The intelligent industrial
revolution is happening all around us. It will be very disruptive, but also
insightful and liberating.”

'A Double-Edged Sword'
Hackers Will Tap Into Artificial Intelligence, Too
Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as the frontrunner in the battle
against cyber crime. With autonomous systems, businesses are in a far better
place to strengthen and reinforce cyber security strategies. But does this
technology pose challenges of its own?
James Maude, senior security engineer at endpoint security specialist Avecto,
believes the use of AI in cyber security is a double-edged sword. While
businesses will see the benefits, criminals will also tap into this
technology to automate attacks. He says businesses could “see criminals and
nation states using innovative AI attacks to do serious harm to everything from
companies’ reputations to critical infrastructure”.
Andy Powell, vice-president and head of cyber security at professional services
firm Capgemini, agrees that criminals could turn to AI to drive their attacks.
“From a hacker’s point of view, AI will power attacks, from automatically
generating and launching distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks via the
internet of things (IoT), to rapidly analysing code and system weaknesses before
inserting exploitation methods,” he says.

Malley's Chocolates' website hacked, 3,400 online customers' card info breached
A computer hacker hit Cleveland-based Malley's Chocolates two weeks before
Easter and stole credit and debit card information belonging to 3,400 customers.
The Brook Park-based candy icon started notifying affected customers last week
by mail. The data breach affected consumers who made purchases online, not those
who bought items in one of Malley's 23 Northeast Ohio stores.

Amazon grounded as feds let Apple, Fedex drones fly
The U.S. Department of Transportation this week unveiled 10 locations throughout
the U.S. that have received federal
approval for airborne drone projects to be operated by Apple, Uber, FedEx
and others, though Amazon and other retail-specific drone delivery operators
were noticeably absent from the list of project participants.
Amazon reportedly applied for federal approval for a project that would have
allowed it to deliver packages in New York City via drone, and issued a
statement
calling the government’s decision not to approve its application “unfortunate,”
according to The Guardian.

Cracking down on counterfeits can be difficult for luxury brands. Copying
techniques have improved so much that some counterfeits now look just like the
originals, while online sales make fakes even harder to spot. Large counterfeit

CNP fraud spikes during every holiday season, and 2018 will be no exception.
Before it’s too late, online retailers need to get prepared in their fraud
prevention efforts. Here are three steps that online sellers can take right now
to ensure that they are ready and able to protect themselves when sales spike
during the holidays.
1. Know your holiday-season CNP fraud benchmarks
Look at your holiday season transaction data from years past to find your
typical holiday season chargeback ratio and false decline rate. Your historical
holiday season chargeback ratio and false decline rates can show whether your
business sees an increase in completed fraud during the holidays, turns away
good customers due to overly rigid screening, or finds the right balance.
2. Audit your in-house fraud prevention practices
Ask these questions to identify areas where your business can improve its
anti-fraud processes.
Does your business follow the best practices recommended by your payment
processor and the major card companies, such as collecting IP addresses as well
as address and CVV data? Does your checkout process give fraudsters too much
freedom to test stolen card data? Does your fraud prevention program cause false

Fraudsters are always looking for new ways to beat prevention efforts, and these
are some of the attack types
we're seeing more of lately. Package rerouting lets thieves use a valid
(stolen) shipping address to get through transaction screening.
Account takeover fraud against online retailers is also on the rise. According
to the
ThreatMetrix Q4 2017 Cybercrime Report, retail account takeover attacks rose
by 17% in the last three months of 2017, an “all-time high.”
Now is the time to study your data to benchmark and improve your store's
transaction-data collection practices, shipping protocols, internal negative
file maintenance, and customer service training.

Erie, PA: Five charged in $250,000 theft ring;
motorcycles, ATV’s, dirt bikes, power tools stolen from Erie area businesses
State and local police spent the late spring and summer of 2017 investigating
numerous reports of motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, lawnmowers and power
equipment reported stolen from businesses and at least one school in the Erie
region. That effort has resulted in the filing of criminal charges against four
Erie residents and a fifth person in what investigators charge was a corrupt
enterprise involving burglary and theft. “In the investigations I was doing,
there was over $250,000 worth of stolen goods,” Erie Police Chief Spizarny said.

Update: Pittsburgh, PA: Two suspects waive
preliminary hearing for $120,000 theft from UPS facility, items pawned in
Monroeville
Former UPS manager Bradley Thomas and coworker, Roseanne Carey both waived their
hearings and agreed to stand trial on charges they stole very expensive items
from package at the UPS distribution center in Pittsburgh and pawned them off in
Monroeville. From 2015 to 2017, Thomas is accused of sealing gold coins,
jewelry, a $25,000 diamond and a gun which all totaled more than $120,000. UPS
said claims are still coming in and the diamond and gun haven't been recovered.

Cleaner thefts across Missouri; $1,264 reported at 1 store
A man has been charged with stealing from multiple Walmart stores in Missouri,
including the Jefferson City store on West Stadium Boulevard. Charles Newton,
41, is charged in Cole County Court with three counts of felony stealing. Newton
allegedly stole several Dyson and Shark Robot vacuum cleaners, once in November
and twice in January. The total value of the items taken during the three thefts
from the Jefferson City store was $1,264. Court records show Newton has six
prior convictions for stealing. He is the suspect in several Missouri Walmart
theft cases including stores in Columbia, Boonville, Moberly, Marshall, Sedalia
and the Kansas City area.

Tampa, FL: Deputies trying to ID women stealing
baby formula from Publix
Hillsborough County deputies are searching for five women who allegedly stole
multiple cans of powdered baby formula from shelves. Deputies said the theft
happened on April 6, 2018, at the Publix store on Race Track Road. The females
removed multiple cans of baby formula, tossed it into a shopping cart and walked
out. Deputies are working to see if this case is connected to one in Pasco
County in April. Four subjects were seen on security video at a CVS store in
Wesley Chapel placing 12 cans of baby formula inside tote bags. A store employee
confronted them and they got away.

OH: Female Shoplifter hits Kroger stealing vacuums and blenders
Kroger and Columbus Police are hoping to id a suspect in multiple theft in
recent weeks at the Kroger on Graceland Blvd. The same suspect is believe to
have detached the spider wire device prior to leaving the store with the high
end merchandise.

Nashville, TN: Armed C-Store Clerk held-up on
smoke break; shoots 1 Armed Robbery suspect in the face
Investigators said just before midnight, the clerk went around the building to
smoke a cigarette. Police said three masked men were waiting outside. One of the
men had a long gun, and another had a pistol and tried to rob the clerk. But,
investigators said the clerk was also armed and fired at least one gunshot at
the suspects, hitting one of them. Police said the suspect who was shot was a
teenager. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries that required
surgery.

Three women entered a Famous Footwear on March 20 on Katy Freeway. Loss
Prevention officers told investigators that two of the shoplifters exited the
store with shoes and fled. The loss prevention officers then stopped the third
shoplifter at the front entrance and took the shoes from her. The woman became
angry and attacked both female employees.

Scottsbluff, NE: Charges dismissed against man
charged with 2016 Safeway robbery
Charges have been dismissed against a man accused in the February 2016 robbery
of the pharmacy at the Scottsbluff Safeway store. The robbery at the Safeway
occurred the evening of Feb. 9, 2016. Police said, a man jumped over the counter
at the pharmacy, demanded painkillers and a pharmacist gave him an unknown
amount of drugs. The man jumped back over the counter and fled the store. In
September 2017, authorities charged Eric Leach on charges of robbery. Lesley
Leach (suspect’s Sister), had told police that her brother had planned to rob
the pharmacy. Another informant had also allegedly provided information that
tied Leach to the robbery. However, on Wednesday, Scotts Bluff County Attorney
Dave Eubanks dismissed the case. Eubanks said that the prosecution didn’t have
enough evidence in the case. Some evidence in the case, including DNA evidence,
would make it difficult to prove the case against Leach.

Pere Marquette Township, MI: Two Women Charged
With Armed Robber of Advance America
Police say Taya Wrightsman and Koreana Reid robbed the store with a gun. Luckily
an off duty deputy heard about it on his radio and was nearby. About an hour
later, one of the suspects returned to the parking lot. A detective happened to
look out the window and see the car sitting in the parking lot and it was a dead
on match for the one they had in the video. The one girl in the car did give a
reason why she came back. No gun was found but they recovered around $15,000
that was stolen.
