2018 Security Leadership Issue: The Rising Role of Women in Security
In the historically male-oriented security field, many women are successfully advancing to leadership roles.

One was inspired by her FBI agent father, another started in customer service and another wanted to be a doctor. Whatever path they took, and how they got there, today, they are all successful women in the security industry, with titles such as Vice President, CSO, Director of Global Security and more.

A historical look at the physical and IT security industry shows a perception that industry professionals are predominately male and former military or law enforcement. In addition, Frost & Sullivan’s “Women in Security” study reveals that women represent only 10 percent of the security workforce. Women have some attributes that are clearly stronger than men in certain areas, and have much to offer in security leadership positions.

What are the challenges and barriers that women face with a career in security, how are they mentoring male and female executives, and what can be done at the college and K-12 levels to garner interest and a career in the security industry?

Editor's Note: While the nine executives focused on in this article are non-retailers, their paths, stories, and advice apply across industry boundaries and are very similar to their counterparts in retail. securitymagazine.com

Family-owned Dunbar Armored's sale to Brink's for $520M stuns industry
Deal is the latest target for Brink’s, making it No. 1 player in cash-management industry

Brink’s said it sought a deal with Dunbar, the nation’s fourth-largest cash-management firm, because of its “complementary focus on small- to medium-size retailers and financial institutions."

Dunbar is the latest target for Brink’s, which has sought to grow its global reach through acquisitions in recent years. It bought six businesses, located in five countries, for about $365 million last year. Earlier this year, it reached a deal to buy Brazil’s Rodoban for $145 million.

Brink’s, based in Coppell, Texas, operates in 41 different countries. wsj.com

Security and Police Officer Deaths Spike In 2018
The month of May ended on a violent note for the security industry just as the year continues speeding toward one of the deadliest for front-line protectors.

As of today, 41 security officers have been killed just doing their job. That's a 31% increase over this time last year.

As of June 1st, 26 security officers have died from gunshots and four from knife attacks. Law enforcement too has seen a rise in the number of officers killed so far in 2018.

Currently, 65 police officers have lost their life with 28 being shot to death and 6 others dyeing from felonious assaults.

In 2017, 46 officers total died of gunfire while 16 others were killed during violent attacks. There were also 140 suicides of police officers in 2017.

For the security industry, it should be a rude awakening as to the potential dangers of any contract, assignment or geographical location. privateofficer.com

Fewer Workers Test Positive for Prescription Opioid Use
Positive marijuana tests are up in states where the drug has been legalized

Based on an analysis of over 10 million drug tests conducted in 2017, Quest determined that 5 percent of the general workforce tested positive for drugs. The same as 2016 but a far cry from Quest's first drug-testing analysis in 1988, when the drug positivity rate was 13.6 percent.

The 2017 data also suggest shifting patterns of drug use, with cocaine and amphetamines positivity surging in some areas of the country and marijuana positivity rising sharply in states with recreational-use laws.

Rates of decline appear to have bottomed out, said Barry Sample, senior director of science and technology at Quest Diagnostics. "These changing patterns and geographical variations may challenge the ability of employers to anticipate the drug of choice for their workforce or where to best focus their drug prevention efforts to ensure a safe and healthy work environment," he said. shrm.org

Potentially Biggest Retail Real Estate Fraud Case in History
Colliers Subpoenas Ex-Wife Of Mattress Firm CEO In Latest Chapter Of Retailers' Real Estate Fraud Case

Colliers International is looking to question the former spouse of Mattress Firm CEO Steve Stagner about real estate deals tied to her and possibly her ex-husband, the latest in a legal salvo involving the retailer's allegations of a multi-state real estate fraud scheme.

Colliers filed a motion in Harris County Superior Court to depose Julie Stagner over records and knowledge regarding a number of real estate entities, including ABR Investments, Breck Real Properties, Longmont Properties and RSJS Ventures.

The end game is to discover whether Stagner was himself invested in these real estate deals, which involved retail sites that were home to at least one Mattress Firm competitor, Select Comfort, according to Colliers' attorneys.

Last November, Mattress Firm accused former Colliers International Atlanta executive Alexander Deitch of being one of the ringleaders — along with former Mattress Firm in-house real estate executives Bruce Levy and Ryan Vinson — in a scheme to steer the company toward high-priced real estate in exchange for developer kickbacks and other incentives. bisnow.com

New Jersey Apple regional office employee gets 3 yrs. prison for embezzling $243,000
Toni Ann Branca, 42, of Livingston, was an administrative assistant for Apple whose responsibilities included arranging employee training, travel and parking for her region of the company. Prosecutors said she had the authority to pay for company expenses, like conference rooms and parking, with an Apple-issued American Express credit card in her name.

Investigators determined that Branca submitted dozens of duplicate requests for reimbursement of the business expenses charged on the company-card. This double-billing racked up a total of about $243,000 in excess reimbursements, which Branca used to shop for clothing, electronics and furniture, according to prosecutors.

This sentence sends a strong deterrent message to white collar criminals like Branca who think they can defy the maxim that crime doesn’t pay,” New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said. phillyvoice.com

Friendswood, TX: Police Officer turned away from Whataburger over gun; company apologizes
A Whataburger store in Texas is apologizing after a plain-clothes detective was turned away from the restaurant because he was open carrying a weapon. Fast food burger chain Whataburger promised additional training for its employees after the Friendswood, TX, officer was denied service Thursday.

When he tried to order, the detective was in plain clothes and carrying a gun at his side, with a badge clearly visible next to it, police say. He was told the store doesn’t serve those with weapons. According to police, the detective identified himself to employees and tried to explain to the manager on duty that he was a law enforcement officer. The manager still would not serve him, and police say when the detective realized he wasn’t getting anywhere, he left so things didn’t escalate. The company says their current policy allows members of “law enforcement with proper identification” to open carry in Texan Whataburger restaurants. They plan to reinforce the policy with their employees. wafb.com

Electrocution, cardiac pain, and a miscarriage:
UK Amazon warehouse investigation - 600 ambulance calls for injured workers

Amazon is under fire again over the way it treats the thousands of people who work at its warehouses after an investigation revealed 600 ambulance calls to its UK sites over the past three years.

Freedom of Information requests lodged by GMB, one of the UK's largest trade unions, revealed 115 ambulance calls just to Amazon's Rugeley warehouse in central England.

The calls include three for maternity- and pregnancy-related issues and three for major trauma. There were 14 calls for people with breathing problems, one call for the building being on fire, and two for electrocution.

The union found that there had been only eight ambulance calls over the same period to a similar-size Tesco warehouse close to Rugeley.

"I've never seen figures like this — Amazon Rugeley must be one of the most dangerous places to work in Britain.

An Amazon spokesman told Business Insider it was "simply not correct to suggest that we have unsafe working conditions based on this data or on unsubstantiated anecdotes."

The person continued: "Requests for ambulance services at our fulfillment centers are predominantly associated with personal health events and are not work-related. businessinsider.com

The Mall Is Not Dead - Five Predictions for Five Years Out
Over the coming years, many malls will reshape their offerings by moving away from a focus on apparel stores clustered around department store anchors toward more diverse networks that include nonapparel retailers, leisure and entertainment tenants, event and pop-up spaces, and business service providers.

1) More than 1,000 department stores will probably close between 2017 and 2023, reducing total sector store numbers by one-fifth.

2) Consumers will continue to grow their spending on experiences at the expense of retail purchases. We expect consumers to be redirecting an additional $78 billion to discretionary services at the expense of discretionary goods by 2023.

3) Online apparel sales will more than double between 2017 and 2023. This means an additional $73 billion of apparel purchases will switch from stores to e-commerce by 2023.

4) By 2023, millennials’ spending power will have grown to reflect their maturity. We estimate that US millennial households will wield more than $5 trillion in consumer spending in five years.

5) Retail alternatives will also chip away at traditional channels. By 2023, US shoppers will be spending an estimated $17 billion on online meal kits, beauty and personal care subscriptions, and online apparel resale and rental. fungglobalretailtech.com

"It was just so awesome for them to see with their own eyes the outpouring of love that the community has for them," said DPD Deputy Chief Avery Moore.

The fundraiser asked for a $10/plate donation, but Moore said many who came donated much more than that. nbcdfw.com

Secure Pegged Products with the Spiral Anti-Sweep Hook

The Spiral Anti-Sweep Hook is a secure solution for high-theft pegged products. These hooks prevent product sweep while maintaining availability and accessibility for honest customers. The Spiral Anti-Sweep Hook protects valuable inventory without high-cost or overly restrictive security measures.

The hook incorporates three features to protect merchandise:

  ● Knob makes a mechanical audible alert when turned to notify store personnel
  ● Coil advances a single product at a time to prevent sweeping

Each knob turn draws product forward, releasing a single item at a time. Additionally, a mechanical, audible deterrent sounds as products are dispensed, drawing attention to the display and alerting nearby store personnel.

The Spiral Anti-Sweep Hook is versatile and can accommodate a wide variety of products especially batteries, printer ink, razor blades, cosmetics and more. The hook attaches securely to pegboard with included bracket and to Wire Power Wing, PowerBar, slatwall and Madix crossbar with optional mounting adapters.

The #1 CISO in Retail Worldwide
Walmart's Jerry Geisler on the CISO position, retail challenges
A Great Story of Working Your Way Up Over 27 Years

A global CISO in charge of one of the world's largest cybersecurity programs got his start on the retail floor. He's arrived just in time for the digital transformation.

When he started working at his local Walmart one summer during college, Jerry Geisler had no idea he would spend 27 years at the retailer, learning everything he could as he moved from market teams to the corporate office in Bentonville, Ark., where he investigated fraud and built an internationally accredited (ASCLD/LAB) forensics lab and eDiscovery program. His next challenges lay in information security as Walmart created a security operations center and vulnerability management program that today scans 1 million IP addresses in about four days.

Three years ago, Geisler moved into an officer role in the assistant CISO position. In January, he was promoted to senior vice president and global CISO, an opportunity that presented itself when the former Walmart CISO Kerry Kilker retired. How did Geisler end up managing the global cybersecurity program of the Fortune 1 retailer? Here, he discusses his retail journey and how opportunities to support a growing business that "sells toothpaste and tennis shoes" led to his security leadership role.

Can you talk about your career trajectory and the steps that led to the CISO position?

Did you have a technical background at that point?

Geisler: I did not, outside of being a hobbyist. I was interested in technology but did not have a technical degree at that point. I started devouring everything I could find. I decided to go back to school to also pursue additional business degrees.

Unlike a lot of IT professionals in the CISO position, you really understood the business as you were learning the security aspects of retail.

Geisler: Right, and I intentionally pursued those degrees with the intent of cutting my technical teeth, in certain situations, with on-the-job training and mentorships.

How much of Walmart's business is online? Is the company still focused on a big box strategy? What are the changes going on there, and how is that affecting your information security programs?

A [few months] ago, it was reported that one of Walmart's third-party partners likely had a misconfiguration issue with Amazon storage. What happened there?

What is your view of the top challenges for the CISO position in modern environments? Things that are going on now -- you mentioned cloud.

In any modern enterprise, the CISO is balancing the business objectives and strategies with the risk that comes hand in hand with those. We have to recognize that most enterprises are not in the information security business; they are in some other business, and you have to understand how to facilitate and enable that business to be successful to achieve those strategic objectives, while also ensuring that we are meeting our obligations of adequately protecting the organization against risk and threats.

Your rise to the CISO position is somewhat unique in that your career in security has grown along with the security operations of the organization. Are there any anecdotes that you could share that illustrate some of the lessons that you have learned along the way that may help those who are interested in pursuing a senior security management career?

I will tell you that my security journey or my career journey, while it may be somewhat atypical, it is not unique within Walmart. I can point to people all over the organization that have started in vastly different roles and been given the opportunity to do things that they never would have conceived of, myself included. techtarget.com

Supermarket Ahold Delhaize Global CISO Identifies
Millennials, Sales and Marketing Pros Riskiest Employees

In its quest to infuse security across its enterprise, $82.8 billion supermarket operator Ahold Delhaize has determined that the employees who engage in the riskiest cyber behavior tend to be sales and marketing professionals, high-level executives and, most surprisingly, millennials, according to the company's global CISO Carolyn Schreiber.

As companies strive to educate its employees about cyber awareness, it can be important to identify common traits among workers who are most likely to open a spam email, click on a malicious link or be victimized by ransomware campaigns and other cyberattacks. Schreiber addressed the concept of victim profiling, and how to steer employees toward more responsible behavior, in a ransomware-themed session at SC Media's 2018 RiskSec NY conference.

Schreiber said sales and marketing professionals tend to be cyber risk-pone because they're "very focused on the customer and just less focused on data protection." Millennials, on the other hand, tend to be more cyber aware, yet still engage in risky behavior, perhaps because they are too comfortable with the digital lifestyle. scmagazine.com

The World Goes Digital, and so Does Crime
Cybercrime Is Skyrocketing as the World Goes Digital

If cybercrime were a country, it would have the 13th highest GDP in the world.

Worldwide, cybercriminals rake in at least $1.5 trillion every year — an amount equal to Russia's gross domestic product (GDP), according to research by Dr. Michael McGuire, senior lecturer in criminology at Surrey University. McGuire's revenue figure includes estimated earnings of $860 billion from illicit or illegal online markets, $500 billion from intellectual property theft, $160 billion from data trading, $1.6 billion from crimeware-as-a-service, and $1 billion from ransomware. The research presents evidence that cybercrime revenues often exceed those of legitimate small to midrange companies.

In fact, the global crime economy has become a self-perpetuating organism — an interlinked web of profit where the boundary between the legitimate and illegitimate is often unclear. The McGuire report notes the emergence of platform criminality, which is similar to the business model used by companies like Uber and Amazon and whose stock in trade is data. The report also red-flags new modes of criminality that these platforms enable, and they allow illicit monies to be directed to more widespread criminal activities such as human trafficking, drug production and distribution, and even terrorism. darkreading.com

Face Recognition Offers Retailers a Fast and Dramatic ROI

Organized retail crime costs the retail industry $30 billion each year, and the D&D Daily just released figures showing that retail deaths are up 12% year-over-year. Loss prevention professionals work extremely hard to keep stores safe, but it's clear that the status quo isn't enough to stop ORC.

This 2-minute video shows how FaceFirst reduces external shrink by up to 34%, in-store violence by 91% and offers typical retailers a full return on their investment in less than one year.

Fighting on All Fronts: Preventing Fraud in an Omnichannel Retailing World
Today, with a connected environment and 24/7 access, consumers expect the freedom to shop where they want, when they want, and how they want. In this piece, Neil Smith, regional head of issuer sales and partnerships, EMEA, Verifi, tells RetailTechNews how, alongside this newfound freedom, comes increased risk of financial exposure; and as the retail landscape evolves, so too does the threat from fraud.

With 20.35 billion connected devices owned worldwide, nearly 3.58 billion global users surfing the web, and 1.66 billion purchasing online in 2017, it’s safe to say we’re in the era of the omnichannel customer. However, unbeknownst to many consumers, more channels mean more pathways for fraudsters to exploit.

In this world of omnichannel e-commerce, consumers use numerous payment methods to complete online purchases, from card or wallet solutions, to one-click and contactless pay.

For most merchants, it is not possible to cater to every single possibility, but the more choice and convenience offered to consumers, the more opportunities to complete a sale. However, with opportunity comes potential challenges, and many omnichannel merchants currently face card-not-present (CNP) fraud and a rise in chargebacks as a result. CNP fraud typically occurs when a criminal uses stolen card details to buy something on the internet, over the phone, or through mail order – and this is becoming increasingly common due to a rise in data hacks, phishing emails, and scam text messages.

But CNP fraud isn’t always the result of a malicious criminal attack. In fact, CNP fraud can be the consequence of unintentional purchases, including: children buying online subscriptions without parental consent; consumers purchasing on-demand movies without permission; or even one-touch purchases being too quick for the consumer to realise they’ve made a commitment. All the above cases are considered ‘friendly fraud’, which occurs when a consumer makes a CNP purchase and then contacts their card-issuing bank to file a chargeback claim. retailtechnews.com

U.S. District Judge John Houston also ordered him to pay nearly $76,500 in restitution to his victims.
