Walmart blasts Trump administration's 'disturbing' detainment of migrant children in one of its former stores
Walmart on Tuesday attacked the Trump administration's detainment of migrant children in one of its former stores.

The company said on Twitter that it was "shocked and disappointed" that its former store in Brownsville, Texas, was being used to house children who had been separated from their parents at the Mexico border.

The separations are part of the Trump administration's new "zero-tolerance" policy against illegal immigration.

"We had no idea our former store would be used for such a disturbing purpose, A.L.," Walmart tweeted Tuesday in response to a woman who called for a boycott against the company. "We are just as shocked and disappointed as you are."

The Brownsville store, a former supercenter that Walmart closed in 2016, is now known as Casa Padre. It houses nearly 1,500 migrant boys between the ages of 10 and 17, some of whom were separated from their parents at the Mexico border.

The facility is one of approximately 100 shelters the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement is using to hold more than 11,000 refugee children in 17 states. businessinsider.com

ICE arrests more than 100 workers in raid on Ohio meat supplier
Largest Workplace Enforcement Action Under Trump Administration So Far

Federal immigration officials on Tuesday raided a large meat supplier based in Massillon, Ohio, and arrested more than 100 workers suspected of using stolen or fraudulent identification to gain employment.

As many as 100 agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, US Customs and Border Protection and the US Border Patrol descended upon four facilities operated by Fresh Mark during the late afternoon raid. Authorities said they made 146 arrests during the raid, which ICE said makes it the largest worksite raid nationally in at least a decade.

The raid -- which was conducted with no prior notice to the business -- was the largest workplace enforcement action to take place under the Trump Administration, said Steve Francis, special agent in charge of ICE's Homeland Security Investigations unit, which oversees Michigan and Ohio. cnn.com

'Cash Machines for Addicts'
New Jersey Towns are Allowing Mob-Linked Shops to Attract Junkies, Thieves
Returning stolen goods for gift cards - then selling them to cash shops

A state watchdog group finds the state's pawn shops, secondhand good stores and scrap metal yards are infested by corrupt and mob-connected owners who are encouraging drug addicts to steal goods and metals from retailers, utilities and homes.

Shockingly, the state investigative report finds, many of these illegal and unscrupulous businesses could have been shut down but local police department were clueless about their municipalities' own laws.

“We found that not only do these secondhand goods stores and scrap yards readily accept stolen items, in some cases they were directing the customers on what items to steal,” said Kathy Riley, a spokesperson for the State Commission of Investigation, which issued the 100-page report Tuesday recommending that the state take over the licensing and regulating of these businesses.

“These are businesses that are contributing to the opioid crisis, which is arguably the most serious public health emergency in generations, by basically serving as cash machines for addicts," she said.

“Some of the individuals who were behind the counters and directing some of these sales were individuals who were convicted felons or organized crime associates.”

The report also faulted retailers and Lakewood-based CardCash.com — which allows people to sell unused gift cards for a price much less than what the card is worth, and the site then resells it for a higher price than it paid. The report says thieves often take advantage of lax return policies by returning stolen goods for gift cars, which they then sell to these cash shops.

The SCI report found that New Jersey pawn shops and secondhand businesses each raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from CardCash. One retail theft crew earned more than $317,000 from CardCash in two years, the SCI said. nj1015.com

Cigarette Smugglers Stub C-Store Sales
Earlier this year, U.S. Customs & Border Patrol, in conjunction with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security investigators, took possession of six million counterfeit cigarettes during a warehouse inspection in Florida, with a street value of more than $1 million.

In May 2017, authorities from more than 20 federal, state and local agencies concluded a year-long investigation into illicit cigarette trafficking in Virginia. The bust culminated in 43 arrests, 743 separate charges and shuttered a scheme that involved more than 600,000 cartons of cigarettes worth in excess of $30 million.

Both cases are examples of the nation’s burgeoning cigarette black market. What the news bites don’t reveal is the impact such illegal activities have on convenience stores’ tobacco profit margins. The cigarettes in question are considered smuggled because the people who sold them didn’t pay taxes to the states they live in.

“With high state cigarette and tobacco excise tax rates, cross border purchasing and illicit trade between low-taxed and high-taxed states is a growing concern,” said Thomas Briant, executive director of the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO).

Smuggling continues to chip away at the industry’s most valuable category, no matter the U.S. region. cstoredecisions.com

Five victims in Indiana file lawsuits against Goodwill,
Allege nonprofit retailer failed to stop sex offender

Five victims have filed two lawsuits in Hamilton County, Ind. this week against Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana alleging the organization failed to protect its workers from a registered sex offender.

The lawsuits stem from incidents involving Ritchie Hodges, a former employee accused of secretly recording employees in the bathroom at the 116th Street and Allisonville Road location.

As Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis reported in March, Hodges is a registered sex offender with recent convictions for child pornography and voyeurism.

Indianapolis attorneys Dan Chamberlain and Fishers attorney Linda Havel represent five victims, including three minors and two adults, who allege Hodges recorded them without their consent.

In their lawsuits, they allege Goodwill was negligent and breached its duty of care to its employees and their safety.

Records show Hodges served time in prison from 2012 to 2014.

The nearly identical lawsuits also accuse Goodwill of failing to inspect its premises on a continual basis and that it repeatedly failed to supervise Hodges. tmj4.com

Ethics Policies Don't Build Ethical Cultures
'It's easy to make unethical choices when they are socially acceptable'

No one plans to destroy their career by breaking the law or violating their company's ethics policy. There are usually personal stressors that push them over the edge, triggering a "fight or flight" response. At that point, they're not thinking rationally, Gallagher said.

Financial problems, relationship problems or health issues are the most common emotional stressors, he said.

"If you're going to be an ethical leader, are you paying attention to your employees' emotional triggers?"

For an ethical lapse to occur, he said, three things must happen:

There must be a need. There must be an opportunity. There must be rationalization. He knew it was illegal, but he rationalized his actions by telling himself that he was just "borrowing" the money.

To create an ethical culture, ethics must be discussed openly and often within an organization, Gallagher said. If you talk about ethical issues that occur every day in the workplace, people will recognize such situations and stop before they step over the line. They'll be more aware of how "socially acceptable" ethical violations can lead to more serious violations.

And, an ethical culture must start at the top. If an organization's leader is setting a bad example, the employees will follow suit. shrm.org

Get-Rich-Quick Scheme to Game Amazon Lands a $102 Million Fine from FTC
The FTC today announced that a group of people who had run a get-rich-quick-on-Amazon scheme have agreed to pay $102 million in fines and restitution. The people, operating under different names in Nevada and Massachusetts got people to pay from $995 to as much as $35,000 for "secrets" that were supposed to let them make big money on Amazon's marketplace, although they had no real connection with Amazon at all.

According to the FTC, the people behind the scheme had taken their victims for at least $36.1 million, and possibly significantly more. inc.com

Target's CEO says retail industry will fight negative impact of tariffs
The U.S. retail industry will try to fight the negative impact of tariffs on Chinese and other imports the same way it fought and defeated a border-adjustment tax proposed by President Donald Trump that would have led to higher costs for imported goods, Target CEO Brian Cornell said Tuesday.

Cornell, who chairs the board of the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), said the trade group will take a wait-and-see approach on a strategy to Trump’s most recent threat to place protectionist levies on $200 billion worth of unspecified Chinese products imported annually to the U.S. startribune.com

Starbucks reins in expansion, closing 150 underperforming stores
The coffee giant on Tuesday said it expects a 1% increase in global same-store sales in its third (current quarter), below analysts expectations of a 2.9% increase. As part of a streamlining initiative, Starbucks is “optimizing” its U.S. store portfolio at a more rapid pace in fiscal 2019, and will close about 150 company-operated underperforming stores in its most densely populated markets (up from an historical average of 50 annual). Former CIA Engineer Charged with Theft and Transmission of Classified Info
Ex-CIA software engineer Joshua Adam Schulte has been charged with stealing and disclosing classified information from the agency. The charges came in a 13-count federal indictment released today.

Schulte reportedly had been named as a suspect who had allegedly handed over to WikiLeaks a massive trove of the CIA's cyber espionage tools that the activist group then published online. He has been imprisoned in Manhattan since Aug. 27, 2017, on unrelated child pornography charges.

The epic breach came to light in March 2017, when WikiLeaks began publishing more than 8,700 confidential CIA documents under the title "Vault 7." Among the leaked documents were various zero-day vulnerabilities, as well as exploits against network routers, smart TVs, and connected vehicles.

Schulte, 29, also tampered with user privileges and access to a CIA computer, according to the indictment, acquiring unauthorized access for himself, locking out other users, and deleting any evidence of his activity in the system. darkreading.com

Most Websites and Web Apps No Match for Attack Barrage
The average website is attacked 50 times per day

No matter how large or small, websites and web applications are under a constant barrage of attacks. Two new studies out today put a finer point on the numbers, showing just how frequently attacks hit the average website and how this constant pressure is yielding a huge number of compromised websites and web apps.

According to the Sitelock Website Security Insider Q1 2018 report, the average website today is attacked 50 times per day, with the vast majority of attacks coming through automated means. The study shows that 88% of traffic filtered by firewalls is from bad bots seeking to compromise sites.

By casting a very wide and automated net, attackers who hit their marks even a slim percentage of the time stand to compromise a huge volume of sites. The study shows that about 1% of sampled sites studied by analysts are infected with malware. That means at any given moment, 18.7 million sites around the world are infected by some form of malware. darkreading.com

How to Make Stolen Data Valueless
As we all know, credit card information, combined with other user data from other breaches and social media, can build a complete profile. In the hands of fraudsters and criminals, these valuable identity sets are usually sold to other cybercriminals and used for myriad criminal activities, both on the internet and in the physical world.

Bad actors keep taking advantage of the smallest gap to steal customer data. For this reason, we must change the current equation of breach = fraud by changing how companies think about online identity verification. Companies need to protect all customer data, but more important, they need to make it valueless.

Multilayered technology that thwarts fraud exists right now. Passive biometrics and behavioral analytics technology are making stolen data valueless by verifying users based on their inherent behavior instead of relying on their data, such as credit card information. This makes it impossible for bad actors to use stolen data, as they can't replicate the customer’s inherent behavior attached to that data. paymentssource.com

Mob Rule in Canada: Italian mafia leading source of cargo theft
$500,000 in goods disappearing everyday in Toronto
Todd Moore was playing hockey in Hamilton, Ont., when some guys came forward with 10 cases of Moosehead beer that had “fallen off a truck”. He knew exactly where it had come from, though. Everyone knew. The theft of two loads of beer in New Brunswick had been all over the news, complete with jokes about Moose being on the loose.

It was no joke to the career police officer, now president of Canadian Armed Robbery Training Associates.

The Greater Toronto Area now has the highest rate of cargo theft in Canada, rivaling major U.S. centers. Research by the Canadian Trucking Alliance and insurers suggests the crime across Canada costs about $5 billion a year. A typical cargo theft is now valued at about $196,000, with more than $500,000 in goods disappearing every day in the Toronto area alone.

In Canada, Moore says traditional organized crime groups are at the top of the food chain.

Mafia connections

In the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal, the leading mafia groups include the ‘Ndrangheta, Cosa Nostra, and Camorra, which can be traced to Italy and Sicily. The Cosa Nostra is likely the most widely known. “They’ve been involved in cargo thefts and hijackings for decades,” Moore says. But the ‘Ndrangheta mafia – otherwise known as the Calabrian Mafia — is the biggest in the GTA and the world at large. It has 10 related groups in the GTA and Hamilton, Ont. alone.

The Calabrian mafia’s 25,000 made members with 250,000 affiliates and associates made an estimated $75 billion in 2017 alone. He calls them the “McDonald’s Mafia” because of it. In Montreal, the Sicilian Mafia connected to the original “five families” of New York City has a stronger presence, although it also has an active cell in the GTA.

They don’t work alone, either. The
mafia groups also work alongside outlaw motorcycle gangs, and organized crime cells linked to Russia and Europe.

Display system helps Canadian retailer cut theft and increase revenue
Deters two-third of thieves from stealing
Like many retailers that offer small, high-value items, London Drugs has struggled with theft. To address shoplifting — particularly “velocity theft,” in which a criminal takes multiple units at a time — the retailer implemented a system that was “fairly successful from a loss prevention perspective,” says Tony Hunt, general manager of loss prevention. The downside? “It diminished our sales,” he says.

When Hunt and his colleagues looked for easy-to-use ways to limit theft, they came across the InVue T1000. InVue, a global technology company, provides merchandising, software and security systems. The T1000 was designed to help retailers “balance the sales and shrink equation” for hanging merchandise, says Karen Bomber, director of product marketing.

To access a product hanging on a T1000, customers must push a button, which then dispenses the item with a time delay. Although minimal, the delay is key, as it can dissuade criminals from engaging in ORC. When the Loss Prevention Research Council studied the T1000, it showed the product to 14 individuals who’d engaged in ORC. Nearly two-thirds said they wouldn’t steal a product protected by the T1000, with most citing the time required to access the merchandise.

The T1000 “limits the risk of theft, but keeps the merchandise available and visible,” Bomber says.

Hudson's Bay, other stores pressured to dump Trump products, amid tariff tiff
The recent tariff dispute between Canada and U.S. has sparked a renewed social media call to boycott stores carrying Trump family merchandise.

However, the campaign may be fruitless, according to some business strategy experts. They say not only do boycotts not tend to work, but also, goods associated with the family of U.S. President Donald Trump — from his red ties to his daughter Ivanka's dresses — have already fallen out of favour with shoppers.

The call to boycott came shortly after Trump slapped tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports. Social entrepreneur and Maclean's writer Scott Gilmore compiled a list of companies to target, all of which carry Trump merchandise.

Study: Online fraud continues to vex retailers
Retailers that have a digital presence continue to worry about how they will handle the increasing pace of e-commerce fraud.

Nearly half of all retailers (including two-thirds of the largest segment) worry about their systems’ abilities to handle increased e-commerce fraud as a result of data breaches, according to “Fighting Fraud in the E-Commerce Channel: A Merchant Study,” a report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

According to data, e-commerce fraud is expected to increase over the next six to 12 months, and these incidents will largely stem from data breaches. More than three-quarters of retailers expect e-commerce fraud attacks to climb in next six to 12 months.

The top three drivers of e-commerce fraud attacks are data breaches; e-commerce growth, and targeted attacks. However, retailers of all sizes named card-not-present (CNP) as their most feared fraud threat. This was followed by in-person card fraud at the point-of-sale. chainstoreage.com

How blockchain will transform the e-commerce industry over the next few years
1.Payments
Blockchain e-commerce projects such as Request Network and ECoinmerce have an aim to create a blockchain based marketplace using fast and secure transactions for any e-commerce business model. Request Network also wants to utilize blockchain technology for the financial transactions aspect of the e-commerce industry by providing low cost financial transactions, high security standards, and an overall amazing customer experience.

2.Supply chain management
Blockchain projects like VeChain aim to create an incorruptible visualization of the supply chain process. Since data validated on the blockchain network is virtually incorruptible, the supply chain process on a supply chain focused blockchain network is a much-needed solution for supply chain management problems facing the e-commerce industry today.

An incorruptible blockchain network will provide a transparent supply chain where consumers can see the order flow of the products they buy, helping increase consumer confidence.

3. Data security
Customer’s data is stored on centralized servers where it is vulnerable to online criminals. Some e-commerce companies have suffered attacks from cybercriminals and a substantial amount of data has been stolen. However, with a blockchain based e-commerce platform, it is virtually impossible to suffer such attacks since blockchain platforms are decentralized, which in turn means customer data is also decentralized.

It is virtually impossible to hack all the nodes of a blockchain platform, so data on a blockchain based e-commerce platform is considered to be relatively safe.

4.Transparent marketplace
With blockchain based e-commerce platforms like Bitboost, transparency is the “watchword.” Bitboost is a decentralized marketplace that facilitates online transactions between buyers and sellers in a frictionless and transparent manner. thenextweb.com

Tallassee, AL: 3 dead after shooting outside Walmart in Alabama
Police have now released the names of the three people involved in the apparent murder-suicide outside the Walmart store in Tallassee. Police say when they arrived around 10:15 Tuesday morning, they found two cars that had hit each other near the garden center. Officers found 65-year-old Harold Miller lying in the parking lot dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers then found the bodies of 58-year-old Tresea Miller and 75-year-old Barbara Buttles inside one of the cars. Police say both of the women were victims of multiple gunshot wounds. Police say their preliminary investigation shows there was a history of domestic incidents between the family members and are considering the case to be a murder/suicide. They have not yet described the family relationship of the three people involved. Police Chief Matt Higgins says cameras in the Walmart parking lot will be reviewed leading up to the shooting. alabamanews.net

U.S. Convicts Two Ex-Soviet Criminal Gang Members On Racketeering Charges
A U.S. jury has found two members of an organized criminal gang from the former Soviet Union guilty of racketeering and other charges in a verdict announced by the U.S. Justice Department on June 19. The department said the jury unanimously found that the gang's chief, Razhden Shulaya, and his chief enforcer, Avtandil Khurtsidze, engaged in an array of violent criminal activities that included extortion, theft, trafficking in stolen goods, and fraud. Prosecutors described Shulaya as a "vor" -- the Russian word for thief -- which they said in criminal jargon means that he belongs to an "order of elite criminals from the former Soviet Union who receive tribute from other criminals, offer protection, and use their recognized status as vor to adjudicate disputes among lower-level criminals."

They said Shulaya was one of the first such alleged criminals to be charged with racketeering in the United States. They said most of his gang members were born in the former Soviet Union and maintained ties with associates in Georgia, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation even as they operated schemes in the U.S. states of New York, New Jersey, Nevada, and elsewhere. Shulaya was found guilty on five counts, including one count of racketeering conspiracy, which carries a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, prosecutors said. The other counts carry prison terms of up to five years. Prosecutors said Khurtsidze was a former middle-weight boxing champion who acted as Shulaya's enforcer. rferl.org

Alton, IL: Thousands of dollars of pain killers stolen from Walgreens and CVS pharmacies
A warning from Police Tuesday after thousands of dollars’ worth of opioids were stolen from two Alton pharmacies. Police said they’re working to track down the suspects before they target another store. “Any community with a 24-hour pharmacy is a potential target,” said Lt. Gary Cranmer, Alton Police Department.

Suspects robbed two pharmacies located across the street from one another on Washington Avenue within a three-day period. The first robbery was at the CVS around 1 a.m. on Sunday. The second was at the Walgreens around 3 a.m. Tuesday, during which a clerk was seriously injured. Lt. Cranmer estimates the thieves made off with more than $30,000 dollars’ worth of opioids during one of the heists. fox2now.com

Cleveland, OH: Would-be thieves fail to steal ATM during smash-and-grab, customers keep shopping
According to Fairview Park Police Chief Erich Upperman, three men are accused of trying and failing to steal money from an ATM at Circle K around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. First, a minivan, which was reported stolen out of East Cleveland, was spotted slamming into the front of the gas station. Then the driver got out and ran over to the ATM, where he struggled to open it. So he got back in the van and tried to run it over again. That's when he got stuck. Some customers were apparently unfazed by the chaos and were seen going into the store to get their morning coffee. news5cleveland.com

ed by Vector Security Networks

Sometimes when you're moving so fast and dealing with the mistakes of the day, the frustration levels peak and one can tend to forget that sometimes you've just got to stop, listen and take a breath and maybe talk to a friend about it all. If it's a good friend, they'll bring you back into focus and make sure you don't react too aggressively and make the mistakes even worst. There aren't many friends like that nor ones that you can absolutely trust. But if you've got a couple, make sure you thank them as well for taking the time.
