A brief history of shoplifting rings - Makes Yahoo Main Page
Retail stores these days are looking a little paranoid. There are cameras and mirrors everywhere, employees counting your items, sensors the size of your head attached to clothing, and security guards making you feel like maybe you should apologize for entering the place. But a recent video of three women scooping up nearly $10,000 worth of clothing from Lululemon might give you a clue as to how all that surveillance can be useful.

These legging bandits are just the latest in a decades-long history of big-time shoplifting. Perhaps in a nod to the fact that many assume shoplifting is the domain of rebellious teenagers, the industry now uses the term “organized retail crime.” Law enforcement first started noticing this as a serious problem back in the ’90s, as this Washington Post article from 1995 indicates. The National Retail Federation estimates that this kind of theft costs retailers $30 billion a year. Here are some of the biggest and boldest shoplifting rings in recent history:

Florida Family Drugstore
In 2008, police in Lakeland, Fla., busted two women for stealing $4,500 worth of Oil of Olay products from a Publix supermarket. That eventually led to the discovery of a ring of 13 people (all related to each other in some way) that had stolen $100 million worth of drugstore items that they resold on eBay. “We buy overstock, discontinued and shelf pull items by the case or pallet,” said their seller’s profile, according to the Ledger.

Victoria’s Secret Discovered
Pursuing what Michigan police initially thought was a meth-producing operation eventually led them to a well-organized warehouse packed with merchandise from drugstores and $3 million worth of Victoria’s Secret items in 2014. The thieves, including a mother-daughter team, would wear clothing modified with compartments that allowed them to stash their goods and get away with stealing up to $15,000 per person, per day.

Abercrombie and Fitch
In 2017, feds indicted 22 people in connection with a theft ring that reportedly stole around $20 million worth of goods from mall clothing retailers such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret, and Guess. Thieves would use “booster bags,” which are lined with material that blocks security sensors, to steal from stores across the country. The ring had allegedly been operating since 2005 and was reselling the merchandise in stores in Tijuana, Mexico.

Geek Squad Foiled
In 2017, New York investigators took down a ring that was using high-tech methods to steal $12 million worth of electronics from stores like Best Buy, Home Depot, and Staples on Long Island. The thieves wore special vests, had devices that disarmed security alarms, and listened to store security personnel with short-wave radios. After they pulled a job, their boss would sell the goods on eBay and Amazon. Makes you wonder about those great deals you find online.

Apple Store robberies: How thieves are getting away in broad daylight
Apple's signature open store design may score points for trendiness, but it's also made the locations easy targets for robberies.

On Monday, an Apple Store in Costa Mesa, California was robbed by a group of five people who snatched $29,000 worth of merchandise from display tables. Earlier this month, thieves stole over $27,000 in phones and computers in Fresno, California, and more than $19,000 worth of iPhones from the store in Huntington Station, New York.

The display tables in Apple's stores enable customers to test out its products. But they also make it easy for ill-intentioned people to grab devices and make a quick escape. The company's pricey products are particularly enticing to crooks. Last month, thieves stole over $100,000 worth of Apple products at Best Buy by breaking into the roof. More than 300 iPhone X devices, worth over $370,000, were taken from a UPS truck in November.

Amazon is under fire after the American Civil Liberties Union performed an experiment using Amazon's facial recognition software. The ACLU found that it incorrectly identified 28 members of Congress as different people who had previously been arrested.

When we reached out to Amazon for its response to a Thursday report from the ACLU about its Rekognition software, a spokesperson provided a statement saying that its software is designed to be used in conjunction with humans, and that the ACLU used the wrong settings for its study.

"We have seen customers use the image and video analysis capabilities of Amazon Rekognition in ways that materially benefit both society (e.g. preventing human trafficking, inhibiting child exploitation, reuniting missing children with their families, and building educational apps for children), and organizations (enhancing security through multi-factor authentication, finding images more easily, or preventing package theft). We remain excited about how image and video analysis can be a driver for good in the world, including in the public sector and law enforcement."

"With regard to this recent test of Amazon Rekognition by the ACLU, we think that the results could probably be improved by following best practices around setting the confidence thresholds (this is the percentage likelihood that Rekognition found a match) used in the test. While 80% confidence is an acceptable threshold for photos of hot dogs, chairs, animals, or other social media use cases, it wouldn't be appropriate for identifying individuals with a reasonable level of certainty. When using facial recognition for law enforcement activities, we guide customers to set a threshold of at least 95% or higher."

Gang Databases Are the Latest Controversial Policing Tool
Police say systems help prevent violence; critics claim they lack oversight and unfairly target minorities.

Politicians and advocates in major cities are scrutinizing police departments for the way they label and track suspected gang members, saying the methods lack oversight and unfairly expose minorities to the criminal justice system.

Police departments in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago use databases that include thousands of people, mostly minorities, some of whom haven’t been arrested for a crime.

Police say the databases are used to gather information which can prevent acts of violence. Detectives in New York City, for instance, will search the database for alleged gang members when investigating a crime with possible gang connections. Police can then review social media postings for mentions of the crime, which might turn up new witnesses and other leads.

But critics say individuals are too often added to databases based on ambiguous criteria, such as the appearance of certain apparel in a social-media post. wsj.com

Lawsuit filed against Cabela's by family of Wilmington woman killed with straw purchase gun
The family of a 19-year-old mother killed in a 2016 drive-by shooting in Wilmington is suing Cabela's, where the weapon was bought in a straw purchase.

The lawsuit, filed by the family of Keshall "KeKe" Anderson, alleges Cabela's negligence caused her death when they sold a gun to a woman who then turned it over to her boyfriend who was legally barred from buying a firearm. Cabela's, nor its parent company, Bass Pro Group, could be immediately reached for comment Wednesday.

"Federally licensed firearm dealers such as Cabela’s are well aware that straw purchases are one of the main ways that guns end up in the hands of felons and dangerous individuals and that a straw purchase is a violation of state and federal law," lawyers representing the family said in a statement. delawareonline.com

Stores can Save Millions, Break Through Retail Chaos By Simplifying Store Execution and Compliance - Study

Retailers throw ‘hiring parties’ to reach staffing goals
Taco Bell is holding “hiring parties” featuring free food and games to help support its goal of hiring 100,000 new employees by 2022.

Most retailers hold humdrum hiring events for new stores that often feature first-come, first-serve, one-on-one interviews. But some companies have gotten more creative.

Dutch Bros, a drive-through coffee chain with over 300 stores in the western states, occasionally hosts hiring parties featuring music and games while applicants wait to be interviewed.

“With the recent closures of Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us, we saw an opportunity to turn a challenging situation into something positive for the retail brand’s talented employees,” said Rhonda Merchant, director of talent acquisition at Main Event Entertainment. retailwire.com

Pawn Shop Crack Down in Vermont - Addiction Fueled Robberies
NORTHFIELD, Vt. It's happening more and more to people across the state -- expensive jewelry stolen right out of their homes, and police say drug addiction is playing a big part in the uptick in these crimes.

C-suite is a weak link when it comes to email-based attacks
Phishing and impersonation attacks are up, and the C-suite is the weak link in email-borne attacks.

Organizations can’t get around using email, and 90 percent of organizations have seen phishing attacks rise or stay the same over the last year. While humans have long proven to be the weakest link in an organization’s security chain, C-suite and C-level executives are some of the least cyber-aware individuals in an organization.

Close to 40 percent of respondents said their organization’s CEO was the “weak link” in their cybersecurity operations, according to the State of Email Security 2018 report (pdf); it’s based on a survey by Mimecast Limited and Vanson Bourne of 800 IT decision makers. Nearly 40 percent of those IT decision makers reported that their CEO “undervalues the role of email security.”

Of those surveyed, 31 percent said C-level employees were likely to accidentally send sensitive data to the wrong person, compared to 22 percent of general employees. Further, 20 percent claimed that a member of the C-suite sent sensitive data in response to a phishing attack, and 49 percent claimed their management and finance teams aren’t knowledgeable enough to identify and stop an impersonation attack.

Fifty percent of respondents said the volume of phishing attacks went up over the last year, while 40 percent saw a rise in the volume of impersonation attacks. csoonline.com

30% of what 60% of all occupations do could be automated today
C-suite needs to contemplate a broader spectrum of issues than technology alone.

Today's organizations are upping their competitive game using various forms of machine intelligence. From chatbots and virtual assistants to robotics processing automation (RPA) and deep learning, businesses and entire industries are transforming the way they operate, although the results are mixed. Proceeding responsibly requires members of the C-suite to consider the potential opportunities, challenges and risks, including the impacts on people and processes.

For example, McKinsey Global Institute recently analyzed more than 2,000 work activities across 800 occupations. It concluded that 30% of what 60% of all occupations do could be automated today. Apparently, 5% of occupations could be automated entirely.

Technology Roles Are Fastest-Growing Jobs in Retail
The composition of the retail workforce is changing in line with the transformative shift from brick-and-mortar stores to e-commerce operations, according to LinkedIn data.

A recent global analysis of LinkedIn user profiles found that "software developer" is the fastest-growing job in retail, while the traditional sales-associate role appears to be in decline. The number of people identifying as retail salespeople on their LinkedIn profiles has fallen 41 percent from 2013 to 2017.

Retail technology jobs have grown from 7 percent to 9 percent in that time, with software developer moving to third-most-held retail occupation in 2017. Salesperson is still the top job in retail, dropping from 33 percent in 2013 to 29 percent in 2017, followed by operations (13 percent in 2017). shrm.org

Insider threats again named as biggest threat to businesses
Despite the fact that insider threats are seen as one of the greatest security threats to businesses, over the last two years the number of administrative privileges granted on employee devices has increased significantly. The proportion of employees who have been given local administrative privileges to install new software and change configuration settings on their endpoint devices at work has increased from 62% in 2016 to 87% in 2018. itportal.com

Prime Day is a prime shopping day for Amazon and other retailers
More shoppers bought on Amazon Prime Day this year compared with last year, with 28% of consumers saying they made a purchase this year, up from 25% last year, according to an Internet Retailer exclusive survey with Toluna of 1,006 consumers conducted online July 18-19.

Plus, 42% of those Amazon Prime Day shoppers spent more than they did last year. Of the 281 consumers that purchased on Amazon for Prime Day 2018, more than 41% of them spent more than $100. Electronics and apparel were the most popular product categories for purchases.

Twitter’s bot purge is good news for retail marketers
When Twitter detects sudden changes in behavior, such as spam-like tweeting patterns or sharing misleading web links, it contacts the owner to confirm control of the account. If the owner doesn’t respond and reset their password, Twitter locks the account and removes the profile.

This is good news for online retailers, both for their own brands and when those brands look for social influencers, says Yuval Ben-Itzhak, CEO of social media marketing platform Socialbakers.

Highland Township, MI: Organized Theft Ring steal $170,000 of stereos and GPS units in Car Dealership theft
A reward is being offered in connection with the theft of car radios from the Szott M-59 Dodge dealership in Highland Township. An employee of a nearby business called deputies around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30 when he noticed several vehicles had broken windows. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, a total of 57 new vehicles had been broken into and 52 had their radios/GPS/touch screen system stolen. The value of the damage and stolen property combined is estimated at $170,000. The dealership’s video surveillance did not show the break-in, which is believed to have occurred early Monday morning. Bonneville County, ID: 2 arrested after more than $24,000 in merchandise stolen from multiple Cabela’s stores
Authorities said a traffic stop in Bonneville County on Tuesday led to the recovery of more than $24,000 in merchandise from three Cabela’s stores. Robert L. Montgomery, of Buffalo, New York, and Janae R. Maxey, of Atlanta, Georgia, have each been charged with felony burglary, felony grand theft, felony possession of stolen property and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance (marijuana). They have been booked into the Bonneville County jail. According to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy made a traffic stop on Montgomery and Maxey’s vehicle in the Love’s Travel Stop. When additional deputies arrived on scene, they discovered that Maxey and Montgomery, and their rental vehicle, matched the description of the suspects in a string of burglaries at three Cabela’s stores — including in Ammon, Farmington, Utah, and Lehi, Utah. At each store, thousands of dollars of merchandise were stolen, and authorities said a large amount of it was located in Maxey and Montgomery’s vehicle. idahostatejournal.com

Altoona, PA: Best Buy Loss Prevention breaks $14,000 case; merchandise seized from Multiple retailers
Police were called out to Best Buy just before 10:00 Tuesday night for a reported theft. Employees were able to describe the suspects vehicle. Officers found the car, and pulled it over and searched the vehicle. They found several items worth more than $14,000 combined stolen from different stores. They also found marijuana packaged to sell in large sums. The suspects allegedly are from the Republic of Chile and they told the officers they will send the items to Chile to be sold. "It is a little unusual to have international crime here in Blair County. but fortunately we had a very quick response," Logan Township Police Chief David Reese said. "Not only from Logan Township Police, Allegheny Township Police, the Altoona Police Department and (Pennsylvania) State Police were very very helpful in assisting our members." The three men are facing several charges including retail theft. One suspect, Kenia Rojas, ran from the scene and is wanted for questioning. wearcentralpa.com

Third NY Man & Fraud Gang Member Sentenced 39 Months
Jason McDonald, 37, of Great Neck, N.Y., admitted to using a stolen identity and stolen Social Security number to apply for bank loans and retail store credit cards or lines of credit.

McDonald and a Central Falls man, Reynaldo Martinez, 25, used the credit to purchase tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods. Martinez pleaded guilty in November 2017 to four counts of aggravated identity theft, two counts of access fraud, and was sentenced in January to 48 months in federal prison. justice.gov

Puyallup, WA: Caught on camera: Walmart employee attacked by suspect
A man at a Puyallup Walmart store assaulted an employee who asked to see a receipt as the man was leaving. Officers said the suspect pushed the Walmart greeter a few times before displaying a handgun and threatening to shoot the employee. The suspect then left in an older Jeep Cherokee. The assault was recorded in two angles by surveillance cameras. kiro7.com

McDonald’s ex-employee used drive-thru window in Felony Burglary
Joshua Jermaine Doswell, 21, of West Palm Beach was being held on $60,000 bail, facing charges of grand theft between $300 and $5,000 and burglary with assault or battery. Doswell entered the McDonald’s near PGA Boulevard and grabbed $401 in cash from a pouch inside the store’s safe and also took $191 from a cash register. palmbeachpost.com

Colorado Springs, CO: Multiple teens arrested in connection with Burglary Ring
On Wednesday, July 24th, a combined operation involving multiple CSPD divisions resulted in the arrest of three teens identified as key players in the motor vehicle theft and burglary pattern occurring throughout Colorado Springs. According to CSPD, a stolen vehicle was recovered during the operation. A stolen handgun was also recovered in the possession of one of the juveniles. CSPD said several other teens were contacted and identified during the operation. The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are pending, according to CSPD. koaa.com

Kenneth Lloyd Wordlow, 52, of Louisville, was taken into custody just after 9 a.m. July 24 on five counts of Robbery 1st degree. Detectives say Wordlow began his crime spree on April 22 with the robbery of the Circle K on Shepherdsville Road. Wordlow is also charged with robbing another Circle K location at 4700 Bardstown Rd. on 3 occasions - April 27, May 6 and July 7. The final robbery was committed on the day he was arrested. Among the products seized were fake soccer jerseys, which saw a boom in counterfeits possibly due to the FIFA World Cup tournament. Police said the group of armed robbers, wearing masks and hats, threatened employees and a customer with death. Jefferson City, MO: Federal charges filed in Walgreens Armed Robbery
Federal authorities have charged three men from Indianapolis in connection with the early Wednesday morning robbery of the Walgreens Drug Store, 2002 Missouri Blvd. Two of the men were in custody as of Wednesday evening. They were identified as Jerome King and Daijahm Reed, both 19. Also charged was Raymond Craig. He was identified as a suspect after Police found the identification card he dropped. Reed, Craig and the unidentified suspect entered the store, wearing surgical masks and rubber gloves. They pointed a handgun at the cashier, tied the cashier's hands behind his back and forced him back to the pharmacy. They then jumped over the counter and ordered the pharmacist to give them prescription drugs. The three then fled the store and ran to a vehicle waiting behind the business.
