Why Sensitivity Training is De Rigueur for Today’s Security Professionals
Should sensitivity training be required for today’s security professionals? On
many occasions, security professionals work with the widest cross section of
humanity, ranging from people who have mental health issues or drug and alcohol
addictions to people who have physical disabilities. The challenge for security
professionals includes an understanding and sensitivity to the cultural
differences that are woven into our pluralistic, multicultural society.

Security professionals need to have an understanding of the types of prejudice
that may exist due to people’s different ethnic background, religion, gender,
sexual orientation and physical and mental disabilities. When undergoing
sensitivity training, security professionals need to be aware of their own
biases in order to prevent them from affecting the way they interact with the
public. Training helps them understand the ways that misinterpretation and
miscommunications can take place between people with divergent backgrounds.

A well-trained security professional deals effectively with all community
members and works with them to create a safe and orderly society. In addition to
providing protection, today’s security professionals are expected to wear many
hats ranging from acting as a helpful guide to assisting people in need. These
hard-working, highly trained men and women are our country’s first responders
who have a wide range of skills – from the sensitivity to deal with lost
children to the ability to respond to and effectively address criminal activity.
Security professionals are sometimes put in high-risk situations as they
confront and detain criminals engaged in theft, trespassing, gang activity and
every other manner of unlawful behavior that may occur.

Minn. Congressional candidate trying to oust Ilhan Omar charged with felony
theft
A Minnesota congressional candidate aiming to oust Ilhan Omar from office was
charged with a felony for allegedly shoplifting from a Target and a grocery
store in the Minneapolis suburbs.

Danielle Stella, a 31-year-old supporter of President Donald Trump, was arrested
twice this year, according to a
report from The Guardian.

On January 8 Stella allegedly stole 279 items worth $2,327.97 from a Target in
the town of Edina. She reportedly scanned a few low-cost items and walked out
with the rest, and was arrested after security personnel notified police.

Stella said she did not remember the incident due to post-traumatic stress
disorder. She has said she was a victim of a violent assault in 2008, and was in
the past charged with stealing under a previous surname, the report said. She
faces up to five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. She denied the charges.

L Brands taps law firm to review company’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein
Victoria’s Secret owner, L Brands, has hired outside counsel to review the
company’s relationship with accused child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, a
company spokesperson said on Thursday.

Epstein was arrested earlier this month on an indictment filed by the U.S.
Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which charged him with
trafficking dozens of underage girls. The financier had prior close ties with
L Brands founder and Chairman Les Wexner, which included a $46 million
donation to Wexner’s nonprofit foundation and living in a New York townhouse
once owned by Wexner.

 Federal
Government to Resume Capital Punishment After Nearly Two Decade Lapse
Attorney General William P. Barr has directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons
(BOP) to adopt a proposed Addendum to the Federal Execution Protocol—clearing
the way for the federal government to resume capital punishment after a nearly
two decade lapse, and bringing justice to victims of the most horrific crimes.
The Attorney General has further directed the Acting Director of the BOP, Hugh
Hurwitz, to schedule the executions of five death-row inmates convicted of
murdering, and in some cases torturing and raping, the most vulnerable in our
society—children and the elderly.

Oakland, CA: Home Depot Execs Visit Oakland About Homeless Camps Near Stores
Executives from The Home Depot were in Oakland Thursday to meet with Oakland
Mayor Libby Schaaf about two homeless camps that sit close to two of their
stores. The Atlanta-based company says it's not leaving Oakland, but it wants
change. Schaaf and City Councilman Noel Gallo met with a team of execs and
attorneys from the home improvement giant. Gallo says he’s against one proposal:
forcing dozens of homeless families to pack up their stuff and move just a block
away.

Schaaf says Home Depot is a valued partner in the community, and she appreciates
Home Depot’s patience. The company is still paying Oakland police officers
overtime to secure their East Oakland store.

Poll Reveals Americans' Lack of Preparedness for Natural Disasters
Research from Healthcare Ready has found that most Americans (54%) are aware
they or their family could be impacted by a disaster in the next five years, yet
more than half (51%) do not have an emergency plan in place.

Identification of a natural disaster (37%) as the type of disaster they’re most
concerned will affect their community exceeds worry about terrorist attacks
(16%), commonly occurring disease outbreaks (7%) or cyber-attacks (5%), among
others.

“In the past two years, we’ve experienced unprecedented disasters, including
wildfires, floods and hurricanes, which severely impacted communities across the
country,” said Nicolette Louissaint, Ph.D., executive director of Healthcare
Ready. “As the harsh realities of disaster become clearer and more frequent than
ever before, we must use these learnings to pinpoint the most pressing needs
within our communities ahead of time.”

2020 Salary Budget Average Increase Forecast Is Just Above 3%

Salary-increase budgets for U.S. employers are projected to grow next year by
just 0.1 percent above the actual average budget increase for 2019, confirming
that wage growth isn't accelerating much despite record-low unemployment.

U.S. salary budgets are projected to rise by an average (mean) of 3.3 percent in
2020, up from an actual year-over-year increase of 3.2 percent for 2019 and 3.1
percent in 2018, according to the WorldatWork 2019-2020 Salary Budget Survey:
Top-Level Results, released in July.

2019 Annual European Salary Survey Shows Higher Pay for Cyber Skills
In partnership with ASIS International, the SSR Personnel & Executive
Profiles
2019 annual European salary survey was released earlier this month.
According to the survey, “44 percent of respondents increased their salary
through annual review, 20 percent by changing their jobs, 18 percent through
increased responsibility, and 7.9 percent through formal job revaluation.” 67
percent had some form of regional responsibility, and in an increase from 2018,
72 percent were members of a professional association.

The 2018 SSR survey noted a gap between supply and demand for cyber
specialists, and 2019 results indicate that
those taking on cyber roles are experiencing the most significant salary
increases. The growing demand for
cybersecurity personnel seems to run in parallel to economic impacts of
cybercrime, with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development predicting
that cybercrimes will cost the world €6 trillion (approximately $6.691 trillion
USD) by 2021—surpassing the combined global trade of all major illegal drug
cartels.

NRF publicly supports new U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade pact
The National Retail Federation (NRF) is formally asking Congress to approve the
U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In a
letter signed by David French, senior VP, government relations of NRF, the
retail trade association urges the House and Senate to ratify the USMCA. The
agreement is designed to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA), which was ratified in 1994 and eases the exchange of goods and services
among the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

While the letter notes that the NRF and its members have supported NAFTA and
other free trade agreements, it also cites limitations of NAFTA in areas such as
digital trade.

CBD-Infused Foods Remain Caught in a Patchwork of State and Local Laws
State cannabidiol (CBD) laws are joining the likes of plastic bag and minimum
wage bills as a patchwork of differing state and local laws flood the country.
But what makes the issue of CBD drastically different, is whether a state or
locality is willing to defy federal law.

While 33 states and the District of Columbia passed laws broadly legalizing
marijuana in some form, 11 states (Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois,
Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington) adopted
recreational-use laws. The difference among these 11 states and others is how
they address CBD-infused food.

“Shoplifters Will Be Liquidated”: Satirical
Comic Follows LP Protagonist
“Shoplifters Will Be Liquidated,” an obvious play on the ubiquitous “shoplifters
will be prosecuted” sign, debuts this October. It’s being billed as a satirical
take on consumerist society — think Judge Dredd if he worked for Amazon —
complete with vivid violence and colorful language.

The largest retailer in the world requires the best-trained loss prevention
staff, and Security Officer Nussbaum defends the company interests at any cost.
Life, human rights, rational thought are all secondary concerns. But his world
is upended when he finds a society living under the retail outlet – a culture
that challenges his notions about consumerism and sense of self. Is he ready for
the message?

“In this hyper-capitalist future, a job in loss prevention is the closest a man
can get to judge, jury, and executioner," said writer Patrick Kindlon. "Nussbaum
takes his position seriously, and when he finds an underground society living
outside corporate oversight his only instinct is DESTROY!”

Kroger bets on robo-warehouses to compete with Amazon, Walmart, other rivals Kroger Co., the giant but aging supermarket chain, has unleashed a flurry of
initiatives to ensure it won’t get thumped in a post-Amazon-buying-Whole-Foods
world: It is revamping locations, bought a meal-kit company, and sold off its
convenience-store business. Its biggest gamble, though, is a partnership with
British online grocer Ocado Group Plc. The two plan to build as many as 20
automated grocery warehouses in the U.S. to help Kroger turbocharge its
e-commerce operation.

The New Ways Your Boss Is Spying on You
It’s not just email. Employers are mining the data their workers generate to
figure out what they’re up to, and with whom. There’s almost nothing you can do
about it.
Your employer may know a lot more about you than you think.
The tone of your voice in a meeting. How often you’re away from your desk. How
quickly you respond to emails. Where you roam in the office. What’s on your
computer screen.

To be an employee of a large company in the U.S. now often means becoming a
workforce data generator -- from the first email sent from bed in the morning to
the Wi-Fi hotspot used during lunch to the new business contact added before
going home. Employers are parsing those interactions to learn who is
influential, which teams are most productive and who is a flight risk.

UK Anti-fraud rules will cause chaos for online
shoppers, retailers warn
'Strong Customer Authentication' could lead to failure in 1/3 of transactions
Online shoppers face chaos and confusion with the introduction of anti-fraud
measures which may lead to one in three purchases failing, City watchdogs
have been warned. The measures, due to be brought in by the EU from September,
will require shoppers to relay passwords sent to their mobile phone or other
devices for orders over a certain limit. It means those without a mobile
phone or whose signal is poor may have to use card readers or have a message
sent to a landline telephone to complete a transaction.

The rules, known as “strong customer authentication”, will apply to
single transactions of more than £27. In a letter to the Financial Conduct
Authority, which is implementing the change, groups which represent shops
warned: “Confusion will lead to abandoned purchases, decline of valid
transactions and poor customer experiences.” The letter added that three
quarters of small online retailers do not have the correct software to allow
so-called “two-step verification”.

How Instagram's new checkout will impact online
retailers and advertisers
Instagram has long been a place for users to discover new brands through organic
content and paid ads. Thanks to a new tool, users can now complete the entire
customer journey without ever leaving the app. With
the new checkout feature currently
in beta testing with 23 brands (including Nike and Adidas), users can make
purchases directly within Instagram.

The checkout feature removes obstacles to purchase that avid Instagrammers will
find all too familiar: redirecting to a browser, creating a brand-specific
website login, and entering payment info they have submitted countless times
before on the same smartphone screen.

Checkout is still in beta testing, but it’s going to have a huge impact on
Instagram and its users. This new feature will freshen up the world of online
retail by:

1. Removing pain points from the customer journey.
2. Facilitating the efforts of sellers.
3. Increasing ad conversion rates.

One-day shipping hurt Amazon's bottom line
In the first quarter since Amazon.com Inc. announced plans to transform its
Prime loyalty program into a one-day free shipping offer, the retail giant’s
sales jumped nearly 20%.

The change drove consumers to buy more on Amazon. But it was also a “shock to
the system” as Amazon, exceeded the $800 million it planned to spend on the
change, said Brian Olsavsky, the retailer’s chief financial officer, during
a conference call with analysts.

Amazon’s one-day shipping push did put a damper on the company’s bottom line.
After the retailer’s profit more than doubled in the first quarter, its net
income growth rose just 3.6% in the second quarter compared with the year
ago period.

Matthews, NC: Authorities battle aggressive
shoplifting tactics
Brazen shoplifters attacking anyone who gets in their way are becoming more
common, authorities said. They load up shopping carts, taking whatever they
want, and if someone tries to stop them, the thieves, in an effort to escape,
sometimes use pepper spray so powerful it can run off a bear. It’s a concern for
anyone in the vicinity, Matthews police Officer Tim Aycock said. "Obviously, it
can lead to a bad situation for everyone," Aycock said. “We don't want to see
that." Shoplifters at a Best Buy injured employees who tried to stop them in
June and July. Pineville police arrested Aauriel Moore this week. They said she
loaded up a cart at the Burlington Coat Factory and punched a loss prevention
officer who tried to stop her.

She is believed to be part of a group that uses bear spray during thefts from
stores. In another incident, detectives in Rowan County said shoplifters used
pepper spray for bears in a shoplifting job. The Matthews Police Department is
working with stores and organizing shoplifting stings to try and stop some of
the crimes. They will also analyze when the thefts are happening and will try to
be prepared for them.

Baltimore, MD: Woman sentenced to 5 years in
connection with $100,000 retail theft conspiracy
Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh announced on Thursday that Lisa M.
Williams, 55, was sentenced for her role in a widespread retail theft
conspiracy. The Honorable Yolanda Tanner of the Circuit Court for Baltimore City
sentenced Williams to five years’ imprisonment for Conspiracy to Commit a Theft
Scheme of $100,000 or more.

According to information presented in court, from January 2017 through June
2017, Williams and others engaged in an organized retail theft scheme which
targeted retailers of clothing and accessories, including L Brands, Dick’s
Sporting Goods, Hollister, Luxottica, True Religion, JC Penney and Ulta. The
theft ring reportedly stole merchandise from stores located in several Maryland
counties including Charles, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Harford.

In June 2017, Maryland State Police executed a search warrant at Williams’s
home. The search recovered 99 boxes of accessories and clothing, many of which
had price tags and security sensors still attached. Also recovered was the cell
phone of Williams, which contained images and texts relating to the theft and
sale of the stolen merchandise.

 Edwin
R. Barkley, 63, of Charlotte, was sentenced yesterday to 30 months in prison,
followed by one year of supervised release, for operating a large-scale
fraudulent scheme involving the purchase and sale of stolen goods and
merchandise through his Charlotte-based storefront business, Tool King USA (Tool
King). Court records show that Barkley bought from multiple boosters
large-ticket items such as power tools, vacuum cleaners, generators, and home

North Hollywood, CA: Gunman suspected of killing
4 people in California shooting spree; 2 were Employees killed at Gas Station
A man suspected in a Los Angeles-area shooting spree that killed four people and
injured two others was taken into custody Thursday, law enforcement officials
said. Law enforcement officials said two men found dead were Zaragoza’s father
and brother.

About an hour later, at a gas station, Zaragoza allegedly shot and killed two
employees: a woman — who officials said is thought to be his ex-girlfriend — and
another station employee at a parking lot, Hayes and officials said. The other
worker survived his gunshot wounds, Hayes said.

Greenwood, SC: Judge throws out indictments in
Greenwood Mall shooting case
The trial involving six people charged in connection to a shooting at a mall in
Greenwood has come to a halt for now. Last year, six young men were charged with
attempted murder, using a weapon during a violent crime, and breach of peace,
high and aggravated in nature, in connection to a shots fired inside the
Greenwood Mall in July last year. Wednesday, the judge in the case issued an
order throwing out the 18 indictments. The judge’s decision came down to an
issue involving the grand jury. Defense Attorney Charles Grose said, a
procedural rule was broken when the witness for the case wasn’t listed on the
indictments.

According to Grose, the state brought the same Officer as a witness for all 100
of the cases brought before the grand jury that day. He said that officer didn’t
have knowledge of the shooting investigation. “That was a shortcut that they
took and because they didn’t comply with the statute, the judge did the right
thing,” Grose said. Eighth Circuit Solicitor David Stumbo said his office plans
to present new indictments on the same charges to the county grand jury next
month and that they hope to bring the case for trial again in October.

Update: Las Vegas, NV: Loss prevention employee
bought teen groceries after allegedly sexually assaulting her
 A
loss prevention employee tried to intimidate and threaten a teen he allegedly
sexually assaulted, an arrest report said. Metro Police said it happened on July
7 in an upstairs room of a local grocery store. According to police, 26-year-old
Dominic Miller caught the teen trying to steal about $20 in groceries from the
Albertson located at 5500 Boulder Highway. The alleged assault came to light
recently because, on July 16, the teen was picked up by loss prevention at the
Kohl’s at the Galleria Mall in Henderson.

During Henderson Police’s investigating into the teen’s alleged theft from
Kohl’s she told them that she was sexually assaulted by a loss prevention
employee of Albertson’s. Henderson Police contacted Metro about the incident
since it fell in their jurisdiction. Fast forward to the teen’s interview with
Metro Police on July 16, when the teen told officers a heavy-set black man in
his 30s, who was later identified as Dominic Miller, followed her out the door
and told her that he had caught her stealing. When Metro Police questioned
Miller about the accusations, he requested a lawyer and refused to talk. Police
seized Miller’s two cell phones. Miller was arrested on two counts of sexual
assault.

Finding your rhythm sometimes is like playing hide-in-seek. Some days, you just
get up with it and some days you just can't find it. But once you do, don't let
anyone slow you down and try not to second guess yourself. Just move forward and
push yourself to try new things and let the flow take you. Don't worry about
where you'll end up; just have confidence in yourself and trust the old
expression "Build the field and they'll come and play." Because if you focus on
just adding value and helping with everything you do and every person you
interact with, the rest will take care of itself.

Just a Thought, Gus
