Twice As Nice: Auror a Double Finalist in the Australian Fraud Awards

The shortlist for the 2018 Australian Fraud Awards was released last month, with Auror named as a double finalist in the Best Newcomer and Best Collaborative Solution categories.

The awards showcase the best in risk, security and loss prevention work across Australia, inviting entries and nominations across 10 categories to recognise excellence in the industry. This was the first year for the awards in this region, following the success of other programmes held previously by Retail Risk in the UK and North America.

Entries were judges by a panel of seven retail industry judges, looking for ROI, innovation, and the value of partnerships across the different categories. Organisers cited an impressive number of entries in the competition this year, with the quality noted as “extremely high, and competition fierce”.

“This is great recognition of the efforts of some pioneering retailers and police in collaborating to reduce crime in the community,” says Phil Thomson, Auror Co-CEO. “We’re thrilled to have been recognised across two categories of the awards, made all the more special by being able to celebrate alongside our valued partners from retail and police.”

Winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on August 30th following the Retail Risk Sydney event.

Academy sporting goods chain sued by couple wounded in Sutherland Springs, TX church shooting
A Texas couple who survived the Sutherland Springs church massacre last year have sued the sporting goods store that sold the gunman the firearm used in the shooting.

On Friday, Rosanne Solis and Joaquin Ramirez sued Academy Sports + Outdoors for selling Devin Patrick Kelley a Ruger AR-556 with 30 round capacity magazines. While this model is legal in Texas, Kelley was a resident of Colorado, where it's illegal to sell, possess or manufacture magazines with capacities over 15 rounds.

"A Texas gun dealer [Academy] cannot sell a firearm and deliver that firearm to a citizen of another State if that sale would not be legal in the purchaser's State of residence," the lawsuit reads. "The Ruger should have never been placed in Kelley's hands."

The couple, who were both shot, accuse Academy of gross negligence and seek damages of more than $1 million each for physical and mental anguish, disfigurement and medical expenses. The suit was filed in Bexar County District Court. dallasnews.com

Northern California fires now largest in state history and growing
On Monday, twin fires in Northern California being treated as one became the largest wildfire in state history, destroying 443 square miles — nearly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco was still growing this week as it broke the record set eight months ago. In December, the Thomas Fire killed two people, burned 440 square miles and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in Southern California. chicagotribune.com

40% of small businesses fail after a disaster, and many more fail within a year
When it comes to recovering from a natural disaster, it’s important for local small businesses to get back on their feet as soon as possible. Unfortunately, many small businesses are not prepared for disaster response and thus fail during the recovery.

According to FEMA, 40 percent of small businesses never reopen after a disaster and another 25 percent, that do reopen, fail within a year. Small businesses find it difficult to designate time and resources for something, like a disaster, that may or may not happen or happens infrequently and they often rely on insurance. govtech.com

The greatest robberies of the 21st century
From smash-and-grabs to underground tunneling and cryptocurrency hacks,
this century has seen it all

Two thieves made headlines around the world this week with a daring daylight heist of the Swedish crown jewels that could have come straight out of a Hollywood movie. But it was not the first dramatic robbery this century. Here are five more:

Graff Diamonds, $52M, 2009
The Graff Diamonds heist remains Britain’s biggest jewelry raid and is among one of the smartest in history. Ostensibly a smash-and-grab, the robbery in the heart of London involved the use of fake prosthetics, multiple getaway cars and a dark criminal overlord.

Banco Central, $71M, 2005
Considered to be one of the world’s largest ever heists, the Banco Central burglary was carried out by a small gang who tunneled 250 feet into the bank's vault. The tunnel took three months to construct and contained a sophisticated lighting system and even air conditioning.

Hatton Garden, $18M, 2015
Carried out over the Easter bank holiday weekend in 2015, a gang of four men ransacked 73 boxes at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit in London's jewelry quarter after climbing down a lift shaft and drilling a hole through the six-foot vault wall

Coincheck Hack, $518M, 2018
In January this year, executives from the Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck confirmed that hackers had taken more than $518 million.

Central Bank of Iraq, $804M, 2003
This is considered the largest bank heist in history and one of the most contentious. In March 2003, just days before the US invasion of Iraq, the country’s dictator Saddam Hussein siphoned nearly $1 billion from the Central Bank. theweek.co.uk

Retailers' #1 Challenge – Staffing the Sales Floor
Read What the CEOs Are Reading on the Subject:
'Retailers, Beware of the Body Snatchers on the Sales Floor'

I recently conducted a mystery shopping project for a retail client with a chain of about a dozen high-end stores. The client wanted me to start with what was considered their flagship store so I could determine how well the others measured up.

While I found the store in a good location, with great street presence and window displays, attractively designed with engaging merchandise, service in the store was MIA, filled with an unemotional sales staff that were literally imposters of normal people when it came to sales. They were “pod people” sales people reminiscent of the 1956 cult classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” No emotion, no connection, just filling space on the floor.

There was no excuse. The store wasn’t busy. I was about the only shopper there, but the sales staffer behind the desk only gave me a shout out upon arriving, too busy with her important work at the computer to bother with me.

The sales staff were effectively using their computer screens as protective shields, rather than seeing a live customer on the sales floor as the tremendous opportunity to make a sale. therobinreport.com

Walmart, Amazon, Target Named America's Most Ethical Companies
Walmart, Amazon and Target have strong reputations as being “ethical” companies, according to Morning Consult. Six thousand and six hundred Americans were asked to think of a company that they would consider to be ethically responsible and name the first one that came to mind. Walmart had the most mentions (666), followed by Amazon (450) and Target (301). Rounding out the top 10 are Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, Apple, Costco, Google, Microsoft and McDonald’s. mediapost.com

Why Amazon And Rival Retailers Are Uniting To Defend The U.S. Postal Service
Many U.S. retailers may hate and fear Amazon.com, but their shared interest in making sure the U.S. Postal Service continues to offer “reliable and affordable” package delivery — critical to all retailers in this age of growing e-commerce — tops all that regular business enmity.

Amazon and the National Retail Federation, the top retail trade group representing retailers including Walmart and Target, have joined with other individual retailers and businesses to create the Package Coalition, a lobbying group seeking to educate and give facts about the state of the USPS’s package business. (Amazon is also an NRF member.) forbes.com

Toys ‘R’ Us failure behind big jump in toy sales

Juli Lennett, senior vice president and industry advisor at NPD, believes that the public demise of Toys “R” Us kept the category “top-of-mind for parents and grandparents when shopping for kids in general.” cnbc.com

Separating the Amazons from the Blockbusters

How Blockchain Technology Is Disrupting Retail

U.S. retail reached a record-setting $5.7 trillion of sales in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And Boston Consulting Group reports retailers using technology and data to personalize experiences see 6-10 percent revenue increases. The industry has several components that both blockchain and cryptocurrency will completely disrupt.

The most obvious is in accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Retailers depend heavily on credit card companies like Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. They also utilize the SWIFT network for payment processing.

Then there’s inventory and shipping of products being sold in retail. Amazon’s fast delivery model made these issues even more vital to retailer success, and brick-and-mortar stores like Borders and Toys R Us that failed to adapt to Amazon’s ecommerce model became cautionary tales.

Let’s not forget about changing consumer tastes, especially in consumables like groceries, liquor, and cannabis. Even with clothing and jewelry, people want to know where their ingredients came from, whether it’s organic, fair trade, etc. And marketing, to get people in the door, is the lifeblood of any retail operation. cryptobriefing.com

The role of blockchain as a fundamental piece in organised retail
The retail industry across the world has been sharing the same pain points for a very long time and the primary source of this was the linear structure in supply chain management and the intricate steps involved in payments. The linear structure was time-consuming and not very secure.

The implementation of blockchain in the retail space promises to be fruitful, for it showcases the potential of being non-linear and secure while being efficient, secure, and decentralized.

Blockchain allows maximum transparency of data down to the minutest detail. For example, in the apparel industry, by adopting blockchain technology, the complete flow of the lifecycle of a product from being raw material to becoming a finished good becomes traceable. This enables consumers to cross-verify its authenticity, and this data that the customer is relying upon cannot be altered with, for it is stored in a decentralized network that is unbreachable. This is one of the many revolutions that the implementation of blockchain will bring in the supply chain management of the retail industry. yourstory.com

Blockchain only as strong as its weakest link
Securing the blockchain ecosystem is the most challenging cybersecurity problem right now. The blockchain itself might be secure, but that doesn’t mean that all the pieces that intersect with it – wallets, exchanges, miners, smart contracts – are secure. And many aren’t. According to a recent study by Carbon Black, hackers have stolen $1.1 billion worth of cryptocurrency in the first half of this year.

Although the threat is primarily restricted to the public blockchain right now, the enterprise space will be next. There’s so much money to be made targeting public blockchain that enterprise blockchain is unexplored territory for hackers right now. Weaknesses in enterprise blockchain will be found due to already successful exploits of the public blockchain. csoonline.com

Americans Fear For Their Data More Than Their Wallet, Survey Finds
Radware®, a leading provider of cyber security and application delivery solutions, today released the findings of its Consumer Sentiments Research, which found that American consumers worry more about having their personal data stolen than their wallet. In fact, of the 3,000 American consumers polled, 55% said data theft ranks above the theft of their wallet (23%), car (10%), cell phone (6%), and house keys (6%).

“It’s no surprise that data theft ranks so high in the minds of Americans as a major risk,” said Anna Convery-Pelletier, Chief Marketing Officer for Radware. “It’s easy to buy a new car or a new cell phone, but having private data exposed can have permanent consequences for both the consumer and the brand where the breach occurred. When an organization does not properly secure its network, it is putting its brand reputation in jeopardy and risking its customer base.”

Hackers and consumers value data differently

While more than half of respondents (54%) said they would be most concerned if their Social Security Number was stolen, hackers buy and sells Social Security number for around $2, whereas full medical records can sell for up to $1000.

Americans were less concerned with the theft of their banking information (18%), credit card number (9%), health records (9%), private cryptocurrency key (4%), passport information (3%), and driver’s license (2%). These types of records and data, which are often traded and sold on the internet or Darknet, can easily make their way into the hands of malicious actors.

Breaches damage customer loyalty

Data breaches can significantly impact customer loyalty and brand reputation. Less than one-in-four (23%) of Americans said they would continue to do business with a brand after a breach, 10% said they would no longer do business with that organization, and the majority (68%) said they would need to be convinced that the business fixed the security issue before returning.

Executives understand this threat. Radware’s recent 2018 Executive Application and Network Security Report revealed that more than 40% of companies ranked customer loss as the top threat to their business from a cyber-attack. Additional Radware research shows that retail executives in particular view customer loss as the top threat, with more than half (58%) noting that customer loss was top of mind. globenewswire.com

How to Get a Second Phone Number

Today most banks and online accounts use your cell phone as a point of verification. So publicizing it (by having it on your business card or email signature line) can create a new potential risk. The solution may be to get a free second phone number. There are paid and free mobile voice-over-internet-protocol (VOIP) services that allow you to do just that. A few to consider are Google Voice, Viber, Gushed, and Line2. You can then use this phone number for the wide audience, and give your actual cell phone number to family and close friends. This is a simple step to make yourself less of a target for fraud.

A dollar of digital fraud costs merchants $2.94
The average number of successful fraudulent transactions per month continues to rise, along with the average cost per each dollar of fraud loss, according to a recent LexisNexis Risk Solutions survey of more than 700 risk and fraud executives from the retail sector.

Survey respondents reported a monthly average of 306 successful fraudulent transactions when the survey was conducted this past March, up from 238 the year before. Survey results also showed an average of 313 failed fraud attempts per month, an increase from 257 a year earlier.

The report also tracked the cost for each dollar of fraud loss, finding that every dollar of fraudulent transactions cost merchants $2.94, up from $2.77 a year ago, a year-over-year increase of 6%. retaildive.com

The Shocking True Cost of Chargebacks
To find out what chargebacks are really costing merchants, we cannot simply look at merchants or the cost of merchandise lost. Chargebacks have a dramatic “bottom-line” impact that cuts across the entire payments ecosystem. They sap sales revenue and merchandise, they saddle businesses with a host of additional fees and administrative costs and they threaten critical relationships between merchants and institutions.

The true cost of chargebacks is not easily measured, but new data published by Javelin Strategy & Research reveals the total direct chargeback costs incurred by both merchants and banks in 2017:

All told, these direct losses came to roughly $31 billion last year. Which is bad enough, but still only one part of the picture. The financial impact of chargebacks goes much deeper than just what we see directly connected to the transaction dispute.

To put that in perspective, that’s higher than the GNP of nearly two-thirds of the countries on earth. But once we factor in the broader impact on issuers, acquirers and consumers, the true cost of chargebacks is much, much higher.

How much higher? How about nearly $150 BILLION? Every. Single. Year.

Chargebacks may be an important consumer protection mechanism, but abuse of the system has created a problem too big to ignore. New processes and technologies like Visa Claims Resolution might reduce some of the burden, but chargeback losses will grow faster than any industry player can respond. cardnotpresent.com

San Antonio, TX: Women in wigs stole $35,000 in DVDs from Barnes & Noble over months
