Meanwhile, Young Brothers has canceled all sailings for the rest of week, which means no cargo coming in or out. Uber to pay 56 workers $1.9 million for harassment and discrimination claims
Uber has agreed to pay 56 current and former employees about $33,900 each, or $1.9 million, to settle their claims of gender discrimination, harassment and hostile work environment. On Monday, lawyers for the plaintiffs filed paperwork in a Northern California district court that outlined how a $10 million settlement announced in April would be divvied up. In addition to the $1.9 million, another $5.1 million will be divided among more than 480 workers, including the 56 who are receiving the other payouts. The lawsuit was filed against Uber in October 2017 by three Latina engineers who alleged they were paid less than their white or Asian male colleagues. The women claimed Uber used a discriminatory “stack ranking” system, alleging “female employees and employees of color are systematically undervalued ... because [they] receive, on average, lower rankings despite equal or better performance.” kfor.com

South Africa: Shoprite hit by 489 armed robberies in a year, has ‘been to war’
Shoprite has "been to war" over the past six months, CEO Pieter Engelbrecht said in his presentation to analysts on Tuesday. During this tough period, the retailer was knocked by a very weak economy, as well as a long list of other woes.

The company was also hit by 489 armed robberies in the period from July 2017 to June 2018, a spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider SA – some 1.4 robberies a day. Last month, a security guard was shot dead when a gang of 15 men robbed a Shoprite supermarket in Heidelberg, south of Johannesburg.

Crime and the tough economic conditions hurt its results, and the company’s share price fell by more than 4% on Tuesday, as the market digested the 3.8% decline in its diluted headline earnings. businessinsider.co.za

With more security and little storage, airport retail challenges the supply chain
Their footprints are small and so are their storage rooms — if they have one. Deliveries are highly scheduled, requiring extra security steps. And their target demographic changes depending on the terminal, store placement and flight schedule.

Between 76% and 90% of concession space is after the security lines, in the "airside" part of the airport (versus "landside" before security). Restaurants and stores that are airside tend to earn more. In the Indianapolis airport, for example, airside retailers earned an average of $978 per square foot, while landside concessions earned $527.

"Airports recognize the 'golden hour' between clearing security and boarding your plane is the only time you have to encourage the passenger to spend their money."

Every Minute, $1,138,888 is Lost to Cybercrime
With cybercriminals costing the global economy $600 billion last year alone, RiskIQ once again took a closer look at the growing volume of malicious activity on the internet during a single “internet minute.”

“As the internet and its community continue to grow at a rapid pace, the threat landscape targeting it grows at scale as well,” said Elias Manousos, chief executive at RiskIQ.

“We made the vast numbers associated with it more accessible by framing them in the context of an ‘internet minute’ using the latest research as well as our own global threat intelligence,” he said.

The research defines the sheer scale of attacks that take place across the internet, said Manousos, in an attempt to help businesses better understand what they are up against online.

Attacker tactics include malware, phishing and supply chain attacks targeting third-parties, the research shows. The motives include monetary gain, large-scale reputational damage, politics, and espionage.

Business Email Compromise (BEC) Attack Trends Report By AGARI
In the second half of 2017, Business Email Compromise attacks continued to accelerate with 96% of organizations experiencing attacks, and with the average business experiencing 45 BEC attacks from June through December 2017.

Because BEC attacks have no payload (such as a malicious attachment or URL) to detect and block, they are able to slip past most of the conventional security technology used to protect organizations. To build the security controls and resources needed to protect organizations and their employees, it is critical to gain a better understanding of the nature of BEC attacks. Until now, relatively little research has been done on this topic.

This guide takes a look at 1 billion real-world emails that were considered safe by conventional security technologies – Secure Email Gateways (SEG), Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), and Targeted Attack Protection (TAP) – and establishes which security technologies incorrectly classify emails as safe, and the nature of these malicious emails.

Hackers Leverage AWS To Breach, Persist In Corporate Networks
Attackers are abusing the characteristics of cloud services to launch and hide their activity as they traverse target networks.

A new body of evidence indicates threat actors are using increasingly advanced techniques to target unsecured cloud users and leveraging features common to public cloud platforms to conceal activity as they breach and persist in target networks. The problem, the Threat Stack security team notes, is not with AWS but with the way attackers are maliciously using it.

"These are not exploits or vulnerabilities in the AWS services and software," Bisbee explains. "This is about the features and attributes of AWS leveraged by attackers in more sophisticated ways."

In simpler attacks, actors typically steal AWS keys and seek direct paths to resources stored in open S3 buckets, or they launch a new Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to mine cryptocurrency. darkreading.com

Cannabis Jobs Are Growing & So Will LP & Solution Provider Opportunities
"Budtenders" Jobs Are Exploding Across Canada - Ontario is Cannabis HQ
More than half the country's pot-related want ads were for jobs in Ontario, which the report notes is also home to the headquarters of major players in the industry.

There was a 50 per cent jump in cannabis-related job postings between April and early May.

"With aggressive hiring plans, Canadian cannabis companies are posting openings across a wide range of job types," Bernard wrote. "The main roles in demand are for workers to grow the product and for others to sell it."

The most-advertised cannabis roles on the website included quality assurance, retail workers, production assistants, maintenance technicians, executive assistants and nurses, which is likely connected to the existing medical marijuana market. Want ads in the recreational market will also add to opportunities in the already established medicinal pot industry.

Editor's Note: Given the nature of that industry, one would assume that the same controls and concerns in the alcohol industry would fit, with Canada's LCBO having a strong well established program. Which means we'll see new LP jobs and new sales, installation, service revenue for security providers. We haven't seen any growth numbers forecasted yet. RCMP launches online training course for police on cannabis legislation
Canadian police officers now have an extra tool in their pockets when the deadline for the legalization of cannabis ticks down with the development of a new online training course, but a legal expert is saying much of the education is likely to take place on the streets rather than in front of a computer screen.

The RCMP, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and the Canadian Police Knowledge Network (CPKN), has launched a new online training course on cannabis legislation. thelawyersdaily.ca

Illegal pot shops offered a reprieve - with a catch

Owners of illegal pot dispensaries in Ottawa are welcoming the shift in the province's approach to retail cannabis sales, but say they're facing a serious dilemma in their quest for legitimacy. Currently, only licensed producers regulated by Health Canada are allowed to sell to authorized medical marijuana patients, and only by mail. Canabliss and stores like it are currently operating outside the law — at least for now.

The illegal dispensaries have been the subject of numerous police busts since 2016, and were expecting to face even harsher penalties once recreational pot becomes legal in October. The new direction announced by the Ontario government this week appears to offer the illegal shops a reprieve, but there's a catch. Speculation that Alibaba Group will be opening an e-commerce processing centre in Richmond, BC ramped up following the May 2018 announcement by their North American general manager Steve Wang that the Chinese e-commerce giant is seeking to lease real estate for a Vancouver office.

This is just the latest in a recent influx of Asian retailers setting up operations in Canada who are filling in some of the gaps left by the departure of retail giants Sears and Target from the Canadian scene. This phenomenon is tied at least in part to a big demographic shift, specifically the high proportion of population born outside of Canada. By 2036, more than 1 in 2 foreign-born people will be from Asia.

It is clearly a time of change in the Canadian retail landscape. Whether driven by the aggressive growth plans of these new Asian retailers who have global ambitions or the changing demographics of the country, Canada is on the radar of many new Asian stores. He also attempted to rob a restaurant earlier in the day. The incidents early Thursday follow a pattern that began on Monday night, when three different Mac’s locations were robbed by one suspect within the space of two hours. Amazon's empire is close to capturing HALF of all US retail e-commerce sales
Blowing away competitors like eBay, Apple and Walmart
Amazon's market share in American online retail sales has reached 49.1 percent, dominating what would otherwise be considered market giants.

The only other major retailers to rise above even two percent of the market share are eBay, Apple, and Walmart, in that order.

Even so, each of those companies are solidly in the single digits, according to number crunching by Visual Capitalist.

The competitors are fighting for a slice of the total $252.7 billion pie that is total US e-commerce retail sales.

Behind Amazon, eBay is the next closet behemoth in the online retail space in the US, with 6.6 percent of the market share.

Third place in the rankings goes to Apple, at 3.9 percent of total US e-commerce sales, with Walmart close behind in fourth position at 3.7 percent. dailymail.co.uk

Retail Excellence has said that some retailers have reported increases in sales by 26% as a result of their website displaying its eCommerce Trustmark, which it introduced this time last year. Newport Beach, CA: 5 in custody, as many as 5 suspects at large after heist at Fashion Island
Police are looking for additional suspects after apprehending five people who witnesses said startled shoppers while fleeing an apparent organized theft incident at the Fashion Island shopping center in Newport Beach on Tuesday evening, Aug 21. Authorities said they received a call about a commercial theft happening at the 1100 block of Newport Center Drive at about 8:30 p.m. At about that time, between five and 10 individuals were seen running through Fashion Island toward parking lots.

One group of five suspects managed to get into a car and drive as far as Westminster, where they were stopped by police. Police said the occupants of the vehicle were in possession of stolen electronics, and added that they did not resist arrest and were taken into custody. Howver, another vehicle full of people may have gotten away. Police speculated that the people involved in Tuesday’s burglary may be a retail theft crew possibly connected to a rash of similar crimes. ktla.com

Orem, UT: Man arrested again for reportedly pawning, selling $23,000 of Rented camera equipment
Police arrested an Orem teenager after he allegedly pawned or sold more than $23,000 worth of camera equipment he had rented from two different camera shops in Orem. Maxwell Flygare, 18, was booked on suspicion of theft by deception and theft by rental agreement, both third-degree felonies, as well as theft by receiving stolen property.

The teenager was also arrested earlier in August for theft by rental agreement and tampering with a witness, both third-degree felonies. On Aug. 13, Flygare reportedly rented $12,000 worth of camera gear from Red Finch Rental in Orem and did not return the equipment on the agreed date. The teenager allegedly told the store owners that he had lost the equipment on a hiking trail in Park City. “For pawning the $12,000 worth of equipment, Maxwell received $2,415 in total, from the pawn shops,” police reported. heraldextra.com

Clinton, MS: Police searching for suspects involved in Smash & Grab Burglary at clothing store
Police say the men used an SUV to smash through the front of Fashion Plaza around 2:30 A.M. Monday morning. The black GMC Yukon used to smash through the store had been carjacked by two armed men in Jackson just prior to the burglary. Police also say, a second vehicle, a Chrysler 200, was stolen out of Jackson on August 19th and was abandoned by the suspects not far from the smash-and-grab scene. Authorities then say, moments after the burglary, Jackson police recovered the stolen GMC Yukon and arrested Jaqon Clincy, 19, and charged him with the armed carjacking. Clinton police are searching for five suspects. Police say these men should be considered armed and dangerous. wapt.com

Oklahoma City, OK: Three women arrested for theft at Victoria’s Secret at Penn Square Mall
Police responded to the mall on Tuesday around 10:54 a.m. after someone called saying three women stole merchandise from Victoria’s Secret. Police were able to the locate the three women: Shatori McNack, 23; Chamiah Daniels, 25; and Kernisha Meadows, 27. According to a police report, they found several items with tags and security devices on them in one of their vehicles. McNack, Daniels and Meadows were taken to the Oklahoma County jail and booked on complaints of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit a felony and committing a pattern of criminal offenses. kfor.com

DeKalb County, GA: Teen kidnapped 2 women during Family Dollar Robbery; now facing 40+ years
A DeKalb County 19-year-old could face decades in prison after police allege he kidnapped two women, including a 74-year-old, during a Family Dollar store robbery. Jernel Davis is accused of forcing the two women inside the store on the evening of July 17. He was arrested last Tuesday. The suspect is said to have had his face covered with a shirt. The warrants allege forcing the women inside made it less likely his robbery would be detected. In the end, he made off with merchandise worth $300 and fled, police said. No injures were noted in the warrants. Witnesses followed him to a nearby apartment complex, where people knew who he was, helping police take out warrants. Davis remained in jail Tuesday on two counts of kidnapping, along with single counts of armed robbery and abuse of an elder person, records show. The kidnapping charges alone could send him away for 40 years, under Georgia law. ajc.com

Conroe, TX: CVS Robbery suspect allegedly robbed more than 15 stores and pharmacies
A 40-year-old man accused in Tuesday's robbery of a Conroe CVS pharmacy is suspected in the robberies of more than 15 stores and pharmacies in three states. Conroe police arrested Patrick Daniel Glavin, 40, on several felony charges including five counts of robbery, evading arrest in a vehicle, tampering with physical evidence, and two motions to revoke his probation for a misdemeanor and felony charge. Law enforcement authorities expect additional charges stemming from other alleged robberies in Montgomery and Harris counties. On Tuesday, Conroe officers were called to a robbery in progress at the CVS Pharmacy on W. Davis at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Glavin turned himself in after allegedly leading officers on a high-speed chase that traveled south, then north and ended in a business parking lot. "Officers were able to locate items in the car that allegedly connected Glavin to the robbery at the CVS pharmacy.

According to Harris County court documents, Glavin is allegedly connected to four similar robberies at Walgreens pharmacies in the city of Houston, two robberies in Harris County, one in Baytown and one in League City. Previously, Glavin was charged with robbery by threat in Harris County and received six years of probation in June. His probation was set to end in 2024. chron.com

Watauga County, NC: Suspects accused of Nationwide Credit Card Fraud Operation
Boone Police Department says the investigation began after receiving information from a local bank that employees observed suspicious activity at one of their ATMs in Watauga County. The suspects were illegally obtaining thousands of dollars from local bank ATMs with the use of multiple bank cards, police say. Authorities say they located the suspected vehicle and were able to stop the vehicle and arrest the suspects, later identified as Norris Felton McLoyd and Yeneyder Del Socorro Norris. A search revealed evidence including cash and over 20 fraudulent credit cards. Boone Police and officials from the Randolph County Sheriff's searched the suspects' home and seized more evidence. The evidence indicated that the suspects were manufacturing fraudulent or "clone" bank cards. wbtv.com
