Building Team to Train Police Worldwide in Digital Forensics

Apple is creating a dedicated team to help train law enforcement officials around the world in digital forensics, the company said Tuesday in a letter to Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse.

The company is also working on an online portal, set to be operational by the end of 2018, where law enforcement officials can submit and track requests for data and obtain responses from Apple. When the portal goes live, police and law enforcement agents will be able to apply for "authentication credentials," Apple said in the letter.

Apple said in the letter that it had trained nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers in how to obtain data from the company. Today marks the kick-off of Project CARGO, an EU-financed project led by the German State Office of Investigation of Saxony-Anhalt targeting mobile organised crime groups specialised in cargo theft.

On this occasion, investigators from 8 EU Member States (Germany, France, Czech Republic, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and Austria), together with specialists from Europol and Eurojust and representatives of the Transported Asset Protection Association, convened at Eurojust’s headquarters in The Hague to agree on ways to tackle this criminal phenomenon in the framework of this new project.

Cargo theft in Europe is increasing in numbers of incidents and also in the cost of lost goods. The criminal groups, originating mainly from Eastern Europe, are becoming more organised and frequently target high-value products, such as electronics, tobacco and pharmaceutical products. Most of these crimes are thefts from trucks at unsecured parking sites, but violent crimes such as high-jacking and robberies are occurring more often.

Industry loses billions to cargo theft each year – in Germany alone, this figure was estimated at EUR 2.2 billion ($2.5B U.S.) for 2016.

New Jersey Employer Didn't Have to Waive Post-Accident Drug Test
An employer in New Jersey didn't have to waive a post-accident drug test for an employee who was a registered medical marijuana user, according to a federal judge.

Court papers claim the security was lax as unidentified assailants attacked the men and forced at gunpoint into a work truck where they were tied up. Can an organization’s biggest assets also be their biggest threats?

Report: Data Breaches Have Measurable Impact on Stock Prices
Though Retail Stocks are a Little More Resilient

When a data breach occurs it's not just confidential information that's attacked: According to a new report, stock prices take a hit, too.

Comparitech analyzed 28 breaches suffered by 24 companies with shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange. While they found wide variations in share performance in the weeks and months following a breach, on average companies that suffered a breach under-performed the NASDAQ by -3.7% after one year.

According to the report, the most significant impact from a breach was felt 14 days after the event. After a month, share prices tended to catch up with the NASDAQ.

Comparitech found that the affected company's industry and the nature of the breach each had an impact on the stock price, with finance and payment companies hit hardest and breaches featuring credit card and Social Security number having the greatest impact.

New Equifax CISO Tightens Structure Post-Breach
Equifax Inc.’s new chief information security officer is adopting organizational changes meant in part to help correct some of the circumstances that led to the customer data breach reported by the company in September 2017.

“Based upon my experience helping other companies regain trust after an incident, we are focusing on a number of key improvements,” CISO Jamil Farshchi told WSJ Pro Cybersecurity in an email. Mr. Farshchi, a veteran of The Home Depot Inc., joined Equifax in February.

Mr. Farshchi said he is starting to establish a stronger presence for business information security officers throughout the credit reporting company, enhancing outposts deep within the company’s business lines. Blame it on the success of the SIEM. For many security operations center (SOC) managers, the security information and event management system (SIEM) was both a blessing and a curse: It was a way to consolidate and correlate security alerts from firewalls, routers, IDS/IPS, antivirus software, and servers, for example, into a centralized console. Seguin, TX: Nearly, $300,000 Lawn Equipment, Merchandise and multiple vehicles stolen from Tractor Companies
A man suspected of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of vehicles and lawn equipment was identified after KSAT ran a story on one of the thefts that included his photo. Freddie Walker, 60, confessed to two separate thefts at Ag-Pro and one at Dietz Tractor Company between July and September. The two theft's at Ag-Pro were an expensive ordeal for the store. Jordan estimated the total value of what was stolen or damaged in the two thefts at about $250,000. Most of the stolen equipment and vehicles haven't been recovered. While police said that a semitruck stolen from Ag-Pro in the first theft was recovered in San Antonio, Jordan said the semitruck has $27,000 worth of damage, including numerous missing wheels and tires. ksat.com

Glen Carbon, IL: Burglar found with 60 pairs of sneakers from Ross store plus $4,300 in other loot
A man from Florida is facing a burglary charge after police found 60 pairs of sneakers and about $4,000 worth of other clothing in a car he was in near a Ross Dress For Less, 6610 Edwardsville Crossing Drive. Charged is Carlos Y. Albelo-Parnau, 32, of Miami, who was also in possession of devices apparently used to thwart security tags on expensive clothing items. He possessed a device used by stores to remove security tags, or sensors, as well as a homemade device comprised of magnets and metal used to remove security devices.

The case unfolded when an off-duty manager shopping in the store Aug. 23 spotted a man putting a pair of shoes into a backpack and leaving the store without paying. A court document states a witness saw the man get in a car and leave. Police made a traffic stop on the vehicle and saw the suspect in the driver’s seat. There were several items of suspected loot in plain view in the back seat. The items had “Ross” tags on them. Police searched several duffel bags found in the car, and, in addition to the sneakers, they also found several bottles of perfume and cologne and hats. The total retail value of the items was $4,366.

Police also found a receipt from a Motel 6 which showed a stay between Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. Officers also found a receipt from a UPS store in Wentzville, Mo., which shows a shipping date of Aug. 23 for three boxes and a receipt from Home Depot for 12 heavy-moving boxes. The address from the UPS store showed an address of destination as Village of Palm Springs, Fla. thetelegraph.com

Laredo, TX: Pawn Shop Employee busted for $3,200 theft; stolen merchandise re-pawned
Katia Trejo is charged with theft of property. The incident was reported back in March when a business owner claimed an employee had been taking jewelry from a pawn shop for a period of over six months. Trejo reportedly took an assorted jewelry valued at $3,200. She had allegedly been stealing jewelry from her place of employment, and pawning it at other establishments. kgns.tv

Baltimore, MD: Woman charged with $2,700 theft from Dick's Sporting Goods in Westminster
Kelly Anthony, 27, was charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit theft and theft of $1,500 to $25,000. Officers responded to the sports retailer to find an employee who witnessed Anthony and a female accomplice take off with clothing they did not pay for. The employee told police she chased Anthony and her accomplice out of the store and through the mall. At the parking lot, Anthony’s accomplice jumped into an SUV and pealed out, leaving Anthony behind. Officers confronted Anthony in the parking lot, at which point, she told them she stole items to sell on the street. Officers responded to Sephora at Hamilton Place on a theft case. A store employee said two unknown black females concealed store items without offering payment. The items taken were various fragrances valued at approximately $650. It was the second theft this same day involving two of the same people, store officials said. chattanoogan.com

Police have charged Julian Lee Amway with stealing 30 bottles of Dove body wash products from the CVS store on West Harrisburg Pike. The products allegedly stolen had a combined value of $269.70. Amway was to be arraigned on Sept. 4, on a felony charge of retail theft. This is Amway’s 13th arrest for retail theft. pressandjournal.com

Kansas City, MO: KCPD makes arrest in Sun Fresh shooting
A male juvenile has been arrested in connection to the Sun Fresh Market shooting that injured two people on Labor Day, Kansas City police said in a statement. Kansas City Police Capt. Lionel Colón said “through a coordinated effort” within its law enforcement network, the suspected shooter was taken into custody without incident Thursday afternoon. Police believe the juvenile was involved in a shooting Monday afternoon at Sun Fresh Market in the Linwood Shopping Center at 31st Street and Wabash Avenue. Two people were injured in the shooting: a teenage girl and a man. kansascity.com

Miami, FL: Armed robbers target Family Dollar employees leaving store
Police are searching for two armed robbers who ambushed a business owner and a group of employees leaving a Miami dollar store. Surveillance video shows the victims leaving a Family Dollar near Northwest 17th Avenue and 33rd Street on Aug. 22, when two armed men come from around the corner, guns drawn. In the video, employees could be seen locking up the store when the criminals held them at gunpoint. Miami Police said the two subjects managed to get away with a phone and gold necklace. wsvn.com

Houston, TX: Armed Robber beats employee while 2 others take safe with owner's life savings
Three men are wanted in connection with a brutal auto shop robbery in southeast Houston last week. Police said the men entered Aces Performance Exhaust shortly after the shop opened on Aug. 29 around 7:45 a.m. Surveillance video shows the men enter the shop and force the employee to the ground at gunpoint. click2houston.com

Juneau, AK: Shoplifter arrested after he swung a Hatchet at Sportsman’s Warehouse employees
Pavel Bogatko, 28, was arrested on Wednesday after officers responded to a reported robbery at the store inside the Nugget Mall. The 911 call came in at 1:34 p.m. Wednesday, with an employee reporting they had tried to stop Bogatko, who had left the store with a basket of stolen items. Bogatko took a hatchet from the basket and swung it at one of the employees. The man then dropped the stolen goods (but still held onto the hatchet) and took off on foot. Denver, CO: Feds Bust $5.3 Million International Cocaine Ring; Trucking Company Owner and 15 others indicated
Based In Greeley, CO, a multi-state drug sting in Georgia and Colorado broke up an international cocaine trafficking ring headed by the Greeley owner of a trucking business, the Colorado Attorney General's Office announced. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's "Operation White Whale" resulted in the indictment of 16 people and the seizure of 134 kilograms of cocaine with a street value over $5.3 million, and $1.2 million in cash. Eight of the 16 have been arrested. The group is accused in a Colorado Grand Jury indictment of importing cocaine illegally from Mexico to a distribution center in Atlanta, Georgia, then using money-laundering operations run by Chinese nationals to launder the proceeds through Chinese banks and back to Mexico. patch.com
