Facial Recognition Tech Is Ready for Its Post-Phone Future
But Are Consumers Becoming 'Too Cozy' with Facial Recognition?
As facial recognition has come to play a bigger role in consumer tech (dozens of phones now come with face unlock features, like Google's Pixel 2, Samsung's Galaxy Note 9, and Motorola's Moto G6) it's also growing in other contexts. Companies are pitching facial recognition software as the future of everything from retail to policing.

"Facial recognition is a tool, and it can be used in a variety of different ways," says Clare Garvie, a privacy lawyer with the Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law. "We can be comfortable with some uses of the tool—like, to help us unlock our phones. That doesn’t mean we should be comfortable with all uses, like surveillance by law enforcement."

Garvie studies the risks associated with face recognition technology, particularly in policing. When the iPhone X came out last year, she worried that the rise of commercial facial tracking tools could make us too cozy with the technology. If Face ID became inseparable from using an iPhone—a device that's practically another appendage for many people—would it make people more willing to accept facial recognition tech in other more nefarious contexts?

"If we move too fast with facial recognition, we may find that people’s fundamental rights are being broken,” Microsoft President Brad Smith wrote in a recent blog post calling for greater regulation of the tech. "This technology can catalog your photos, help reunite families or potentially be misused and abused by private companies and public authorities alike."

Violent security incidents up 50% at Britain’s jewelery and watch stores
Gangs on stolen mopeds targeting Rolexes
Jewellery and watch shops are being hit by violent gangs, fraudsters and opportunist smash-and-grab criminals 50% more often this year than last.

London is suffering from the highest rise, particularly from violent gangs travelling on stolen mopeds. Police statistics show that of 22,000 mopeds stolen in the UK last year, 15,000 were from London.

High profile raids involving gangs on mopeds at Watches of Switzerland, Boodles, Watchfinder and Mappin & Webb over the past year are among 24,294 reported crimes in the 12 months to April reported to London’s Metropolitan Police.

The shocking rise in watch and jewellery incidents has been recorded by nationwide security specialist UK Protection, which says that Rolexes, in particular, have become a tradeable currency within a criminal underworld that is taking greater risks as the chances of arrest fall. watchpro.com

Burglaries at gun stores increasing in Missouri and US
Only eight states have security standards for gun dealers
The theft of more than 20 firearms at a Fenton gun store last week was the latest in an increase in such robberies at gun stores in Missouri and Illinois, according to federal officials. Figures from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives show there were at least eight gun store burglaries last year in St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties, including an April 2017 heist at the Hazelwood Cabela's.

South Carolina’s law against price gouging is in effect with the possibility of tropical weather in the coming week, the state attorney general’s office announced Saturday. The news from S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson came shortly after Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency as forecasts showed an increasing likelihood that then-Tropical Storm Florence will make an East Coast landfall.

“We can expect normal price increases, but we may see businesses and individuals looking to unfairly take advantage of the situation through price gouging of food, gasoline, lodging and other commodities as defined by the statute,” Wilson said in a statement. “By our law, that’s a criminal violation and an unfair trade practice.”

Talk of Nike Inc. sales taking a hit from the company’s decision to put ex–NFL player Colin Kaepernick at the center of its latest “Just Do It” campaign is looking overblown, based on data from a Silicon Valley digital commerce research company.

After an initial dip immediately after the news broke, Nike’s online sales actually grew 31% from the Sunday of Labor Day weekend through Tuesday, as compared with a 17% gain recorded for the same period of 2017, according to San Francisco–based Edison Trends.

The news generated plenty of online buzz, with social engagement around Nike and Kaepernick rising sharply this week, according to 4C Insights, a marketing technology company. Mentions of and comments about Nike on social-media platforms rose 1,678% on Sunday and Monday, according to 4C data. Mentions of Kaepernick spiked 362,280%, the data showed. marketwatch.com

California Moves to Limit Ammunition Sales at Stores

Beginning next year, ammunition dealers across the state will be required to maintain logs of all sales — one of many steps California has taken to limit access to bullets.

Next July, California will begin requiring stores to conduct point-of-purchase background checks on ammunition buyers. Typically, background checks will not be required for people purchasing bullets at gun ranges for use on-site.

Today it is more difficult to buy bullets in Sacramento than most other cities in America. The buyer must show government-issued identification, which the seller electronically sends to the police department, along with information about the quantity and type of ammunition purchased, said Theresa Langhus, a crime scene investigator with the Sacramento Police Department. New fight over political paraphernalia in the workplace
Restaurant workers sent home over 'Abolish ICE' buttons
A budding dispute over political paraphernalia in the workplace has become a sticking point between regional fast-food chain Burgerville and members of an employee-led union.

The controversy began when a group of co-workers at the Burgerville location in Portland's Montavilla neighborhood started wearing #AbolishICE and "No human being is illegal" buttons on the job. Ten employees were sent home for the day last month after refusing to take those buttons off. However, a day later, Burgerville placed the rule on hold and gave the employees back pay. The group returned to work, with the buttons in tow.

A few days later, the company changed their minds again, announcing they would re-instate the button ban starting Thursday, Sept. 13. The company admitted the no-button policy was "long-standing" and "verbal," but they're now working on a "written policy." krem.com oregonlive.com

Retailers Warn of 'Industrywide Price Hikes' As New Trump Plan Would Tax Every Chinese Import
Get ready for more tariffs as President Donald Trump just revealed his next hand. He told reporters aboard Air Force One that he has earmarked another $267 billion worth of Chinese imports that he can hit with levies on short notice, if provoked by China.

If Trump plays this hand, it will push the total amount of tariffs up to $517 billion, meaning every single Chinese product coming into the U.S. will be subject to levies, hurting the fashion sector, which is heavily reliant on China.

NRF Says Tariff 'Wild Card' Threatens Retail Imports

Data Breach Notification Laws: Is it Time for a Uniform Standard?
While it’s been more than 15 years since California set a precedent, these laws have proliferated around the world, and in the United States. They have been becoming more prescriptive about the type of data that must trigger a notification and the time frames in which notification must be done.

Today, just about every state has created its version of the data breach notification law, which some contend has created a hodgepodge of state laws that all organizations that hold data must comply with. This is why there have been calls for a uniform federal data breach law by such groups as the National Retail Federation and the Financial Services Roundtable. Security firm Digital Guardian created a detailed data-breach disclosure law infographic that is available here.

Would a standard federal data breach disclosure law be beneficial? The idea garners mixed reaction among security experts.

“The issue can best be summed up by the late Justice Brandeis, who observed that the states are the laboratory for democracy,” he said. “They have the flexibility to try different schemas, and to evolve standards based on their citizens, whereas federal standards have little ability to be tailored to smaller groups and have minimal flexibility in execution. While data breaches are fast becoming commonplace, they are still very new, and further experimentation may be beneficial at the state level, even though national standards would ease compliance.”

Retailers facing trust crisis?
Nearly 60% of consumers think their personal info is vulnerable to data breaches
The research suggests that businesses are facing a customer trust crisis, with 59 per cent of survey respondents saying they believe their personal information is vulnerable to a security breach.

Fifty-four per cent said they don’t believe that companies have their best interests in mind.

The implications of consumer trust, or lack thereof, go beyond perception, with 92 per cent of survey respondents saying they are likely to purchase more items from companies they trust and 93 per cent saying they are more likely to recommend it to others.

Solving the trust issue is not straightforward, since 53 per cent of survey respondents said they expect the offers they receive from businesses to be personalised and 54 per cent said that marketing messages aren’t as relevant as they should be. insideretail.com

Blockchain is not a silver bullet for fraud prevention
Hailed as a tamper-proof public ledger, blockchain is a welcome weapon in the fight against fraud, but it is not the panacea some believe it to be

When new technological solutions emerge they are often hailed as a panacea for all things, including fraud. Is blockchain a silver bullet for preventing fraud? No. But it’s a welcome addition to the arsenal of fraud prevention and a significant step towards squeezing out the fraudsters.

Because blockchain is a decentralised shared ledger and resistant to tampering, it certainly offers some robustness to transactions. Verified users can store, view and share digital information in a security-rich environment. This helps to foster trust, accountability and transparency in transactions, all important aspects of commercial relationships, and can be applied to financial transactions, identity management and the supply chain.

It is used in maintaining asset registers for shares, property, smart contracts, and other titles to ownership and documentation, all making such fraud more difficult. However, it should not be forgotten that technology is equally an enabler of fraud.

Don Tapscott, chief executive of the Tapscott Group and co-author of Blockchain Revolution, says: “That’s why it’s called blockchain, and that block is linked to the previous block and the previous block, ergo, chain. This blockchain is running across countless computers. I would have to commit fraud in the light of the most powerful computing resource in the world, not just for that ten-minute block, but for the entire history of commerce, on a distributed platform - this is not practically feasible.”

However, we should be careful not to hype it up too much. Blockchain can increase the efficiency of transaction processing and reduce fraud, but it doesn’t entirely prevent it and risk officers would be unwise to ignore its limitations.

Spanaway, WA: Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputies fatally shoot Robbery suspect at Walmart
A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting at the Walmart in Spanaway. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department says just before 2 a.m. Monday, an armed man wearing camo robbed cashiers at the Walmart on Mountain Highway. The man then walked around the store. The Sheriff's department says a deputy arrived just as the suspect was leaving the store. The man refused to show his hands and then charged at the deputy and two deputies opened fire on the suspect. The suspect then ran into nearby woods. The Sheriff's department says the suspect was found dead near the Shell gas station nearby with a gun in his hand and cash in his pockets. The Sheriff's department says the suspect is an unidentified white man believed to be in his 30's. q13fox.com

Atlanta, GA: Man in custody after threatening Mass Shooting at Greenbiar Mall
A man who threatened a mass shooting at a southwest Atlanta mall is in custody after the threat sparked a massive police response, Atlanta police say. Officers and squad vehicles filled the parking lot at Greenbriar Mall Friday morning when they learned that a man who was making threats on a crisis hotline was in the area. Channel 2 was there as SWAT teams, bomb squad vehicles, helicopters and ambulances swarmed the parking lot.

Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee said at a news conference Friday afternoon that multiple agencies responded to the scene after police were able to see the man walking around outside the mall on surveillance footage. They watched him put a backpack down and investigated it as a 'suspicious device' but later determined it was not dangerous. Chafee said it was important to treat the threat seriously. Chafee said they caught the man in the woods near the mall without incident after bringing a negotiator. No one was hurt. wsbtv.com

New Orleans Police are asking for the public's help identifying a suspect involved in an armed robbery on Royal Street Friday afternoon. The suspect walked into the Lush Cosmetics store around 5:30 p.m. posing as a customer. She approached the counter, brandished a gun and demanded all of the money in the register. Providence, RI: Man pleads Guilty to stealing $14,000 in cash from Target and drugs from CVS
The second of two men charged with stealing more than $14,000 from an ATM inside a Target department store in Smithfield and a controlled substance from a CVS Pharmacy inside the store pleaded guilty in Providence federal court Friday. The U.S. attorney for Rhode Island said Liridon Gashi, 33, of Bronx, New York, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit larceny from a financial institution, bank larceny, conspiracy to commit burglary involving controlled substances. A co-defendant in this case, Epirot Kransniqi, 27, of Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty on May 11, 2018. turnto10.com

The person who local media says is a Saudi princess said the theft happened on Friday afternoon.
