Apparel Maker Gildan Closes Distribution Center

All area Wal Mart stores were closed Tuesday, following an evacuation order given by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday. That includes Walmart locations in Mt. Pleasant, James Island, West Ashley, Goose Creek, Moncks Corner and Summerville. Disturbing accounts of Amazon drivers may reveal true cost of 'free' shipping
Business Insider spoke with 31 current or recently employed drivers about what it's like to deliver packages for Amazon. Some drivers described a variety of alleged abuses, including lack of overtime pay, missing wages, intimidation, and favoritism.

Many of these drivers also described a physically demanding work environment in which, under strict time constraints, they felt pressured to drive at dangerously high speeds, blow stop signs, skip meal breaks and urinate in bottles on their trucks.

Many of their accounts were supported by text messages, photographs, internal emails, legal filings, and peers.

In response to this story, Amazon said, "While it is impossible to characterize a network of thousands of delivery drivers based on anecdotes, we do recognize small businesses sometimes need more support when scaling fast." A patent filed in 2016 has come back to haunt Amazon just as it's under major pressure over the way it treats people who work in its warehouses.

The original patent documents depict a cage designed to carry employees around warehouses. The idea is that as warehouses become crowded with robots whizzing around carrying out tasks, it may be safer for humans to navigate these workspaces in an enclosed box.

Their paper describes the design as "an extraordinary illustration of worker alienation, a stark moment in the relationship between humans and machines."

Plans for the walkout — to start at lunchtime on Sept. 18 — have been approved in recent days by "women's committees" formed by employees at dozens of McDonald's restaurants across the U.S. Lead organizers include several women who filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in May alleging pervasive harassment at some of McDonald's franchise restaurants.

For the past year, select Google advertisers have had access to a potent new tool to track whether the ads they ran online led to a sale at a physical store in the U.S. That insight came thanks in part to a stockpile of Mastercard transactions that Google paid for.

But most of the two billion Mastercard holders aren’t aware of this behind-the-scenes tracking. That’s because the companies never told the public about the arrangement.

Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Mastercard Inc. brokered a business partnership during about four years of negotiations, according to four people with knowledge of the deal, three of whom worked on it directly. The alliance gave Google an unprecedented asset for measuring retail spending, part of the search giant’s strategy to fortify its primary business against onslaughts from Amazon.com Inc. and others.

Pirates demand up to $1M from brands trying to buy their own name
According to Simone, “Chinese consumers all care about the new brands, and that has created a thriving trade in the gray market in fashion. The pirates are looking at all the new brands very early [in their life cycle], focusing on what’s been sold [for example] in Bloomingdale’s, online, what is advertised on Taobao. They do a quick search and find that a brand registration has not been filed in China and think, ‘I’ll do it first.’”

The issue of bad-faith registrations isn’t a new one for brands, but it certainly has become a very expensive one for firms trying to get back their name.

While pirates in many countries are seeking $30,000 to give back a name, the ask in China is far steeper. “In China, the pirates want $150,000, $200,000 and sometimes 1 million in U.S. dollars. They are willing to wait years to get their price, and in some cases, you can’t even get a price from the pirate because they are waiting for a final legal decision. Global Report Card Survey Reveals Cybersecurity Program Trends Since 2017
Security Pros Feeling More Confident
In spite of today's volatile security climate, the research shows infosec professionals feel more confident now than in previous years due to a greater investment in automated processes, threat intelligence solutions, and a commitment to company-wide training. When compared to 2017, the percentage of respondents that said their organization should be graded as a C or lower declined. Looking at the grades overall, it's clear that organizations surveyed have refined and improved their security posture.

Additional findings revealed the success behind this year's top cybersecurity programs and grade A security pros include:

Automation: 92 percent of grade A companies said they use automation to simplify time consuming processes. Conversely, D and F companies said their processes are highly manual.

Training: 5 percent more organizations plan to step up security awareness training in the coming year than did last year, and the number that intend to skip training initiatives decreased by half from 2017.

Threat intelligence: 82 percent of security professionals find value in using DNS-based threat intelligence.

Expand to a larger threat infrastructure map: 71 percent of grade A organizations have the ability to expand from one indicator to a larger map of threat infrastructure, but 35 percent of organizations still lack in this area.

Forensic analysis: A and B organizations were more likely to follow-up on clues and evidence and conduct forensic analysis of compromised machines compared to D and F teams. darkreading.com

Mobile Fraud Around the Globe Soars 24% Year-on-Year; 44% in the U.S.
Mobile fraud rates jumped by nearly a quarter (24%) from 1H 2017 to the first half of this year, with a 150 million recorded attack attempts, according to ThreatMetrix. The firm analyzed 17.6 billion online transactions during the first half of 2018 via its Digital Identity Network, finding that over half (58%) now come via the mobile channel.

This is also reflected in the growing prevalence of fraud — especially in the US, where mobile attacks jumped 44% over the same period. Mobile fraud now represents one third of all attacks stopped by ThreatMetrix, but the channel still represents a more secure way to transact than via desktop, it claimed.

Bot attacks continue to fuel the growth in global fraud, with an “unprecedented” 60% increase in the second quarter of the year: from one billion bot attacks in Q1 to 1.6 billion in Q2.

Google under investigation for tracking users' location without consent
Could be slapped with $10K fine per violation
Arizona is investigating Google's practices when it comes to tracking user location, according to a Tuesday report in The Washington Post.

If the investigation finds evidence Google has violated user privacy, the state's attorney general, Mark Brnovich, could potentially slap the search giant with a heavy fine, the Post said in its report.

Last month, an investigation by the Associated Press found that Google services on Android devices track and store your location data even if you turn location history off in your privacy settings. Google apps reportedly store your time-stamped location data, which is used to target geography-specific ads. Google told the AP that it lets users know about tools that tap location data and that the company provides "robust controls so people can turn them on or off, and delete their histories at any time."

In Arizona, Brnovich could make the issue a consumer protection case and seek a penalty of up to $10,000 per violation, which would make the fine extremely high for Google, the Post said. cnet.com

Toronto, ON: Mall shooting recovery should include security review and more cameras, experts say
In the wake of a shooting that left shoppers frantically scrambling for shelter, Yorkdale Mall general manager Claire Santamaria and her staff have covered a lot of ground in a bid to ensure consumers and store owners feel safe.

The mall, she said, has Toronto Police Service officers on-site year-round and is sticking to its usual routine of regularly reviewing its emergency protocol and security resources — measures security and retail experts say are crucial for shopping centres because they have a lot more at stake than just consumer safety.

University of Toronto real estate professor William Strange said shopping centres stand to lose profits if they can’t get a handle on violence.

Though he noted that mall shootings are far from being a “big and distinct” problem in Canada, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if Yorkdale and other shopping centres hire extra security guards, put up more cameras and start thinking about the “broken windows” theory.

The retailer is suing Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and TD Bank
Luxury clothing retailer Oak and Fort Corp. is suing the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and the Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) after fraudsters, using a fake email address impersonating the company’s founder and CEO, made off with $49,000 routed through accounts with the banks.

With an email address similar to Kang’s, the fraudsters attached invoices for “alleged business development and consultancy professional services.”

The first totalled $21,667. The next day, the same accounting employee received another invoice for S27,334 for consulting services. Days later, a third invoice arrived for more than $53,000, but the payment was never completed, the lawsuit says. biv.com

U.S. Online Retail Sales Pegged to Reach $525 Billion This Year, and Level Off
In its 2018 U.S. Online Retail Forecast, FTI Consulting said it expects U.S. online retail sales to reach $525 billion by the end of the year, which represents a 15.9 percent gain over last year. The firm also said online sales account for 13.2 percent of all retail sales in the U.S. but that the share of total retail sales will begin to level off.

The company also said due to “stronger-than-expected results in 2017,” its retail practice unit “now expects U.S. online retail sales to top $660 billion by 2020 and surpass $1 trillion in 2025. This represents a compound annual growth rate of nearly 10 percent over the next decade.” But this growth comes at a cost.

Christa Hart, a senior managing director in the retail and consumer products practice at FTI Consulting, said online sales are “growing at a respectable rate for many omnichannel retailers in large part because they continue to bear nearly all the associated costs of attracting and accommodating online shoppers, while their store-based sales often languish.”

“This has made the omnichannel strategy far less lucrative for retailers than once anticipated, even though they collectively claim a majority of online sales,” Hart said. “An omnichannel strategy that is well executed and achieves respectable scale has allowed those retailers to remain competitive as the retail shakeout continues, rather than boost profitability and return on invested capital.” wwd.com

Hurricane Florence Will Bring Huge Disruption to eCommerce on East Coast
The wide impact hurricane Florence will have on East Coast logistics will be felt throughout the nation, but more importantly, it will impact goods that travel north-sound along the busy East Coast corridor of the U.S.

UPS, FedEx, UPS, and other logistics carriers will have to hold or reroute ground shipments, which historically means delays of many days between shipper and recipient, even if both are nowhere near the affected area. Mandatory evacuations in North Carolina may already start to impact the ability for trucks to travel along the I-95 and I-85 corridors by Wednesday.

Online merchants should start notifying potentially affected recipients by Wednesday that shipments may be delayed by days due preparations and eventual impact of hurricane Florence.

Sellers that are in the impacted areas should start to think about placing their listings on “vacation hold” by Wednesday. It is unlikely that orders shipped past Wednesday will leave the project impact area.

Because seller reputation and feedback are so important on marketplaces, sellers should monitor any shipments that are going into or through the impacted areas for delays.

eBay already announced they will offer seller protection to sellers impacted by hurricane Florence and Etsy, Amazon, and others will likely follow. However, these seller protections are usually based on a zip-code database obtained from the Federal Government of impacted areas and may not be 100 percent accurate. esellercafe.com

A tech company could soon relaunch Elder-Beerman’s ecommerce website after a federal bankruptcy judge agreed to the purchase agreement for the store’s parent company’s intellectual property.

Judge Mary F. Walrath signed the $900,000 agreement Monday, awarding Bon-Ton and subsidiaries’ websites, social media accounts, 5.6 million email addresses and 24.5 million unique customer records with full names and mailing addresses to CSC Generation, according to federal bankruptcy court records. springfieldnewssun.com

Update: Montgomery County, MD: Police Charge 5 Men in Theft From Chevy Chase Gucci Store inside Saks Fifth Avenue
Up to $30,000 worth of merchandise was stolen in July
Police are still looking for two other individuals that assaulted two Gucci employees during the heist. Officer Rick Goodale said Tuesday it is likely police would charge additional suspects with robbery if they are arrested. On Tuesday, detectives from the 2nd District investigative unit charged the five men with crimes associated with the theft. Two people had assaulted the Gucci employees while five additional suspects entered the store and began stealing merchandise from display cases. The suspects took “pretty much whatever they could grab” at the time of the robbery and then got out of the store, Goodale said. “Purses, belts, socks and other clothing items from the Gucci brand were among the items stolen. Knoxville, TN: Five women arrested in Walmart shoplifting scheme
Knoxville Police Officers responded to a shoplifting call at a Walmart near Knoxville Center Mall Monday evening. When they were investigating, Walmart loss prevention said five people had been working together and were about to walk out of the store. KPD said the suspects were in possession of a felony amount of merchandise, saying the first suspect left the store and acted as a lookout for the remaining suspects. Once outside, the remaining suspects left their items and tried to run out the emergency exits. KPD apprehended all five. wbir.com

Sandy, UT: Two suspects boldly stealing $5,500 worth of MacBooks from local computer store
The robbery happened at Expercom last week in Sandy. A man allegedly entered the store and asked a couple of questions. Shortly after, he and a female suspect entered the store and asked if a clerk would check for inventory in the back of the store. When the clerk went into the back, the couple allegedly cut security chords to three computers and ran out of the store with them. The computers the suspects stole were a 15-inch MacBook Pro, a 13-inch MacBook Pro and a regular MacBook, the store's manager said. The estimated value of the computers stolen was $5,500. fox13now.com

Tulsa, OK: Suspect arrested in Multiple thefts from Sam’s Club
Tulsa police arrested a man suspected of stealing from a store about a half-dozen times. Police said Cameron Whitlock went into two different Sam’s Club locations six different times between late August and early September, loaded his cart with one or two TVs, then walked out the door instead of paying at the register. An officer spotted him last night walking near hotels around 11500 E Skelly. The officer knew he had a felony warrant and was suspected in some theft cases. The officer arrested Whitlock for the warrant and for drug possession. Detectives later tacked on six counts of larceny related to the Sam’s Club theft, two of which are grand larceny charges. cbs42.com

Nicquelya Michel Massey, 21 has been charged with embezzlement between $1,000 and $20,000, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. It's alleged that she stole 35 items, including those in the electronics department where she worked. Enid, OK: Citizen honored by Police for reporting a crime in Progress; $2,400 of Walmart merchandise recovered
Matthew Todd Winbolt was presented a commendation by Enid Police Chief Brian O'Rourke for notifying police about a man pushing two carts of merchandise stolen from Walmart. "There's not too many people who would have taken the initiative to call us," O'Rourke told Winbolt. "He would not have been caught if it was not for you. You did what we like to see citizens do." Winbolt thanked the chief for his commendation, which was framed along with two department challenge coins and an EPD patch. He also received a letter from O'Rourke.

On Aug. 5, Winbolt was shopping at Lowe's when he saw a man pushing two Walmart shopping carts across the parking lot. "He was pushing two carts and it was kind of weird because one was full of clothes not in bags and the second had electronic equipment that still had the security tagging on it," Winbolt said. "As soon as he saw me on the phone he started pushing faster and looking over his shoulder. It just didn’t look right. "I was just trying to do right by Walmart," he said. Cobb County, GA: Teen saves Target associates stabbed by Robber; suspect arrested
Thanks to quick thinking and training with Cobb County police, a 17-year-old was able to save his two Target co-workers who were stabbed by an alleged robber Sunday night. Mario Alexander acted quickly until officers could arrive to the Cobb Parkway store, Cobb County police Sgt. Wayne Delk said.

When Alexander saw one of his his co-workers bleeding profusely from a stab wound in his arm, he used his Target shirt and materials in the store to create a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

Alexander then applied gauze and direct pressure to another co-worker’s neck wound. “He continued to check on both of his fellow employees until medical personnel and police officers arrived on scene to take over,” Delk said. Authorities later arrested Michael Leon Thornton, 27, on charges of two counts aggravated assault and one count armed robbery. ajc.com

Police said an employee at a south Charlotte cell phone store was shot during an attempted armed robbery Tuesday night. Officers said multiple armed suspects tried to rob the South Tryon Wireless and Fashion store on South Tryon Street. Officials said the male employee inside was shot and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Oakdale, CA: Saddles Stolen in Smash-and-Grab
Sometime over the weekend, a person or people used rocks to smash the windows at Diamond K Saddlery in Oakdale, walking away with thousands of dollars worth of horse saddles. The crime has many upset in the town that calls itself the "Cowboy Capital of the World." The thief or thieves grabbed the saddles that were right next to the windows, meaning they never set off the alarm because they never had to go inside. fox40.com

Court records show Emmett Davis Jr., 21, was indicted on malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, theft by taking and theft by deception charges on Sept. 5. He is accused of killing Silling Man, 19, sometime between Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 and pawning her cellphone. Man’s body was found by a maintenance worker in the backroom of a vacant restaurant space at Gwinnett Place on Dec. 21. gwinnettdailypost.com

Wichita, KS: Man sentenced to 32 Months for embezzling $500k from Pawnshop
A Wichita man has been sentenced to 32 months in prison for embezzling from a pawnshop where he worked. Philip Jelinek pleaded guilty to felony theft. Prosecutors said Jelinek embezzled $587,000 from A-OK Enterprises LLC, where he worked as an accountant. The thefts involved money from internet sales.

A-OK owner Bruce Harris said the thefts forced his company into bankruptcy, led to layoffs and caused him to close some locations. Jelinek, 35, asked a judge to consider probation because he was seeking treatment for a gambling addiction and had sold his house to pay restitution. Judge David Kaufman denied the request. kake.com
