US blacklists 28 Chinese organizations and companies over Xinjiang camps
Washington is adding 28 Chinese companies, government offices and security bureaus to a United States blacklist over their alleged role in facilitating human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang region. Monday's announcement targets some of China's top artificial intelligence companies in a similar way to the US move against smartphone giant Huawei earlier this year, and comes just days before crucial trade talks between the two sides.

In a statement, the US Commerce Department said "these entities have been implicated in human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups in [Xinjiang]."

The organizations targeted by the United States are now barred from buying US products or importing American technology. The list includes 20 government and security bureaus in Xinjiang, and
eight companies, including Hikvision, one of the world's largest manufacturers of AI-driven video surveillance products, and Meiya Pico, a leading digital forensics firm. cnn.com

‘It’s like whack-a-mole’
US small businesses are fighting an uphill battle against counterfeiters in China

Intellectual property theft is a pervasive issue in China and a central bone of contention in the U.S.-China trade war. In 2018, 87% of all counterfeit products seized at U.S. ports came from mainland China or Hong Kong, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Trade. It’s not just a problem for the U.S. Eighty percent of all counterfeit products seized worldwide originated in China, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

While the discussion about protecting intellectual property has largely focused on big tech companies, small-business owners are fighting an uphill battle with limited resources to protect their patents and trademarks – the core of their business – in China’s legal system. cnbc.com

Major Alarm Panel Recall Could Be Looming
There appears to be a major issue of non-compliance with both the NFPA and UL codes by possibly every alarm panel manufacturer in the industry — despite being UL certified. Jeff Zwirn, president of IDS Research & Development, discovered this issue and has produced several videos which show the non-compliance of the panels. The claims are that none of the control panel equipment tested complied with codes UL 985 and NFPA 72. The non-conforming control units are unable to communicate the alarm condition to the central monitoring station, and cannot audibly alert the property owner and those within the property of life safety dangers such as smoke and carbon monoxide, or intrusion. sdmmag.com

Court denies Amazon’s appeal on pay for workers in security lines
Amazon.com requires warehouse workers to go through a security line at the end of their work shifts. The time workers spend on lines, which can take up to 25 minutes to get through, is not paid for by Amazon.

A Nevada state law that requires employers to pay for mandatory employee screenings was not to Amazon’s liking so the e-tail giant appealed. An appeals court rejected Amazon’s bid. retailwire.com

Square Opens Up Payment Processing To More CBD Businesses
With Lack of Financial Services This is a Big Development

In May, Square launched a smaller invite-only pilot program to offer services to a small number of CBD sellers, which apparently went well and led to the new broader roll out.

Although hemp and its derivatives including CBD were federally legalized under the Farm Bill, many financial institutions have remained wary of working with companies selling the cannabis compound.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill last week that would protect banks that work with state-legal marijuana businesses from being punished by federal regulators. Its path in the Senate is uncertain, it stands a good chance of getting to Trump’s desk.

Square said that products sold must be hemp-derived and contain less than 0.3% THC, in accordance with the Farm Bill’s definition of hemp. forbes.com

Huge Movement in LP Jobs This Week
8 Senior LP/AP Jobs Removed From Corporate Websites

Obviously being in the 4th Quarter, Retail America is moving on top jobs, nearly wiping the slate clean of top jobs in the U.S. Two of which, the Williams Sonoma and the CISO position at Domino’s, being significant positions. It’ll be interesting to announce the executives in all eight positions.

All eight will be able to learn a lot about the organizations going through the holiday season with them. They’ll quickly see the strengths and weaknesses of the programs.

In some regards, it’s good to be going in so late in the year. As performance, good or bad, won’t be a reflection of their impact. And they’ll be able to start fresh in the New Year. Good luck to all eight.

Inside Guardian’s PDQ Award-Winning
False Alarm Reduction Techniques

Guardian Protection earned the 2019 Police Dispatch Quality Award by exercising proven best practices to determine if police response is warranted. Here’s how.

Batman had Robin, The Green Hornet had Kato and thousands of law enforcement officers have Guardian Protection — only the latter is much more impactful for being a real-life partner in fighting crime.

Not only is Guardian one of the nation’s largest security systems installation and monitored services providers but also among the most diligent when it comes to managing false alarms and verifying alarm signals before summoning first responders.

Guardian Protection’s consistent execution of proven best practices for the deployment and ongoing monitoring of security systems has helped it deliver on the mission to protect people and property — thereby making the firm and its associates heroes in the eyes of law enforcement and customers alike.

That commitment and posting false alarm dispatch rates of just 0.2 for its residential accounts and 1.1 on the commercial side have led to Guardian being named winner of the 2019 Police Dispatch Quality (PDQ) Award, the company’s first such recognition in the program’s 14-year history.

Established by SIAC and Security Sales & Integration and officially endorsed by the Partnership for Priority Verified Alarm Response (PPVAR) and the Installation Quality (IQ) program, the PDQ Award annually recognizes a security company that best demonstrates a proactive, cooperative and successful effort in false alarm reduction strategies.

The program’s mission is to raise industrywide awareness, promote partnering with responding agencies for public safety, motivate alarm companies to be proactive and provide workable models.

“Historically and to this day, we work side-by-side with law enforcement as necessary to implement false alarm reduction tactics within our company,” says Vice President Care and Monitoring Operations Jason Bradley. “We seek input from law enforcement at the beginning of our policy-making processes rather than at the end. We begin those conversations by using our industry’s false alarm reduction best practices as a foundation, thereby adding credibility to our working together.”

Founded in 1950 as Guardian Alarm Systems of Pittsburgh and in 1991 being acquired by the Armstrong Group of Companies, Guardian Protection has grown to its present status providing a broad range of systems and services to hundreds of thousands of residential and commercial clients.

Ascena Retail Group CISO:
A Case For Community & Finding Strength In Numbers

Security Leaders Should Focus On Robust Information Sharing

Ascena Retail Group, Inc. (Ascena) is one of the largest women’s specialty retailers in the world. Some of its brands include Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lou & Grey, dressbarn, Lane Bryant, Catherines, and Justice. With around 58,000 associates who work in stores, home offices, distribution centers, and international locations, keeping a company of this stature secure is no easy feat.

Enter Mark Tomallo, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for Ascena. His teams are responsible for all cyber, compliance, information security, governance, and risk management functions.

“One of the great things about this organization is there's a lot of support for cyber security and the protection of data, throughout the organization. And I would say, starting from the board to the audit committee to the executive management to the lines of business — all are incredibly interested in protecting our customer data,” says Tomallo.

And while he notes that they may not be 100% sure how to do it — they may not understand the dark web or all the intricacies and the complexities that go on in the underground supply chain — there is “phenomenal support” for the IT teams that work on the how, on a day-to-day basis.

Cyber Security Meets Community-Building

“In retail, the different security teams talk on a consistent basis,” says Tomallo. “Columbus is an incredibly tight security community where Ascena, LBrands, Abercrombie & Fitch, and others will visit and share trends. Factor in DSW, Big Lots, Cardinal Health, AEP, Nationwide Insurance, Scott's, and Ohio Health all in the same region, and you have a community that helps each other. We’re all chasing the same thing.”

Tomallo notes that as a CISO and executive leader, information sharing must be robust. The threats witnessed by Ascena’s security teams are not unique to its operations. “In the government, sharing of sensitive security information can be detrimental to the mission. We’re not in that industry.” Tomallo recommends that every CISO should take an active role in their region to meet with other CISOs, executive leadership, in addition to legal partners. “The old mindset of keeping everything close to the vest, and not disclosing security challenges is definitely going by the wayside,” concludes Tomallo.

On a national level, trade association National Retail Federation (NRF) hosts an IT Security Council forum for members to exchange information on current cyber threats and industry best practices. Similarly, the member-led Retail and Hospitality Information Sharing and Analysis Center (RH-ISAC) built a community to surface and share cyber threats.

Target donates $250,000 to Univ. of Minnesota to boost cybersecurity program
Target Corp. is donating $250,000 to the University of Minnesota to help bolster the pipeline of graduates with expertise in cybersecurity. The gift — part of a three-year collaboration with the U’s College of Science and Engineering — is being used for scholarships, fellowships and grants, as well as course curriculum and opportunities to connect with professionals in the field.

Rich Agostino, chief information security officer at Target, said the gift from his department isn’t specifically about Target trying to recruit more cybersecurity experts for itself right now, noting that it has been able to fill most of its job openings.

“Of course I’ll be happy if we get a bunch of energetic, smart students from the U to work here at Target, but really the bigger mission is inspiring the next generation of cybersecurity leaders,” he said. “When you see some of the data out there, there’s literally hundreds of thousands of open jobs right now in cybersecurity. That’s expected to grow to millions in the next few years.” startribune.com

Walmart has big plans for drone delivery
Walmart is not ceding drone-based delivery innovation to rivals. The discount giant has filed two recent patents for systems that would help ensure safe delivery and drop-off of packages by drone. One patent filing is for a system that would have a drone land on an outdoor platform and then send a signal that would open a trap door, enabling an automated system to move the package inside.

The second filing is for a window unit including a net that would automatically catch drone deliveries, with sensors confirming the package has been dropped off. Other drone delivery pilots and publicly identified drone delivery patent filings have involved packages being dropped on the ground. supplychaindive.com

RFID: Learning from the UK's Marks & Spencer - MS Stores
$12.7B, 1,487 Food & Clothing & Home Stores in 57 Countries

RFID Journal published its first article about Marks & Spencer's use of passive UHF radio frequency identification technology in 2004 (see Marks & Spencer Expands RFID Trial). Back then, M&S was just tagging men's suits. UHF RFID was in its infancy, but the retailer had earlier tracked food trays with passive HF technology and saw potential benefits for deploying passive UHF to manage suits, casuals and separates.

With 15 years' experience, the company clearly has since learned a lot about the right and wrong ways to utilize RFID in retail (see Marks & Spencer to Expand RFID Item Tagging, Marks & Spencer RFID Expansion Tackles Privacy Issue, Marks & Spencer Leads the Way and Marks & Spencer Embraces Change). That's why I am pleased that Richard Jenkins, M&S's head of loss prevention, security and RFID, and Zara Adato, the retailer's project manager for RFID strategic development, have both agreed to speak at RFID Journal LIVE! Europe 2019, which will take place on Nov. 13 in London, with RFID Professional Institute certification training to be offered on Nov. 12. rfidjournal.com

Press the Call Button on Your Smartphone to Redial Last Call

Here’s a tip that a lot of folks forget about now that we use smartphones more than landlines. Your phone keeps the last number dialed available so you can easily call them back. In both iOS and Android, you can press the call button in the phone app for a quick call-back feature. This is great in dead spots when calls drop, when you get a busy signal or when you are on a conference call.

'Counterfeit-Vaping Crisis': AMA Urges Tech Giants to Police Illicit Vaping Products Sold on E-Commerce Platforms
The AMA is urging e-commerce CEOs to vigorously enforce their existing policies to keep illicit vaping products off their platforms and be vigilant against the sale of empty vaping cartridges and other items used to create counterfeit vaping products.

“It is time for e-commerce companies to take action to ban the sale of materials fueling the counterfeit-vaping crisis,” wrote AMA Executive Vice President and CEO James L. Madara, MD. “Given the pace at which vaping-related lung illness is expanding, there is no time to waste.”

The letter was sent to the CEOs of Amazon, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, and cited a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, which reported that “the street” where one used to buy illicit materials “has morphed into a global digital marketplace packed with materials used to manufacture cartridges.” ama-assn.org

Second-hand goods sites are biggest source of online fraud
Nearly half of people have paid for an item they never received

Second-hand goods scams are the most common form of online fraud, but victims are reluctant to notify police, according to a survey by national statistics agency CBS.

Among the items that never made it to the buyers’ homes were clothes, shoes, and accessories as well as mobile phones and laptops. Tickets were sold but not sent in 5% of cases. In 0.2% of cases the sellers were not paid for a product.

A third of the respondents said they had less faith in digital security as a result of internet fraud. Four in 10 said they had experienced emotional problems, such as anger, sleepless nights and anxiety about being scammed again. dutchnews.nl

Green Bay, WI: Needed cash:’ 2 Longtime employees accused of stealing from Packers Pro Shop
Two longtime employees are accused of stealing from the Packers Pro Shop. Susan Adelbush, 67, and Patty Meyer, 57, each face one misdemeanor count of theft in a business setting. Surveillance video showed Adelbush printing duplicate receipts for items customers had purchased. The video then shows Adelbush scanning the duplicate receipt as if to return the item, then pocketing the money from the cash register.
The 15-year employee of the Pro Shop told investigators she had accumulated debt from online shopping about six years ago and began stealing money to pay off what she owed. Adelbush said she began by taking about $100 per month but more recently had been taking $250 per month. Meanwhile, Meyer, a 22-year employee of the Pro Shop told investigators she had been stealing over a four-year period, and that sometimes she just "needed cash." She estimated she took money about 10-12 times, estimating her total theft at between $1,000 and $2,000. fox11online.com fox6now.com

Getting involved in a process is an obligation and taking it seriously is absolutely critical to your success regardless of what the process involves. Whether it's looking at a job or sitting on a company committee. Once you've committed, your reputation, your image, your future is at stake. Minimizing it won't decrease the impact nor will it reduce the expectations of others. Because when you become part of a process, other people are either looking at you or they're counting on you to be your best or give your best. So once you've committed, follow through and deliver your best.

Just a Thought,
Gus
