Hurricane Michael battered Florida as the strongest storm ever recorded in the region on Thursday. The category-4 hurricane with 155 mph winds left two dead and washed away entire buildings.

Michael was downgraded to a tropical storm early on Thursday morning as it churned across central Georgia with maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph. But photos from the scene in Florida show the devastation the hurricane left behind. Several stores and restaurants, including a Family Dollar, McDonald's and Waffle House sustained major damage from the storm. See pictures below businessinsider.com

Their store's grand opening was this week. Hurricane Michael left it in ruins.
When they pulled up, ripped shingles, mangled cars and twisted street signs were scattered everywhere. A massive tree trunk sat on debris of a building they'd spent a year renovating into a family-friendly kids' store. Its grand opening was set for this weekend.

"I wished I was dreaming," Brandon Troupe said of seeing their planned project in ruins. "But it was real ... I still can't believe it. I'm still trying to process it." The Troupes said they lost everything, including the furniture, deck, walls and ceilings. "My heart stopped ... It has been a year effort and I just didn't know what to do," Sydni Troupe said. cnn.com

Local governments, in particular, are increasingly strapped for the significant resources necessary to respond immediately to a large-scale disaster. Corporations often command the resources -- capital, products and people power -- that public entities lack. With such an abundance of resources comes major responsibility. Many companies are so well-positioned to spring to action in the face of disaster, such as to offer shelter, items necessary for survival and volunteer work from employees, that they have a moral duty to offer some kind of support to the communities in which they operate during times of crisis. All such companies must acknowledge and accept this duty.

If you’re an executive wondering how you can do more to help your community right now, understand that while there are certainly things you can do to help communities recover from Florence, the most effective step you can take is better preparing your response to the next natural disaster. CVS Pharmacy Completes Rollout of Time Delay Safes in All 900 California Stores
70% decline in pharmacy robberies during trail run in Indianapolis
CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced today that it has completed the rollout of time delay safes in nearly 900 of its free-standing stores in California. The safes will help prevent pharmacy robberies and combat the ongoing opioid epidemic by helping to prevent diversion of controlled substance narcotic medications by keeping them out of the hands of unauthorized individuals. In addition, the safes will help CVS Pharmacy ensure the safety and well-being of its customers and employees.

Controlled substance narcotic medications that are sought after by robbers, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, are now stored in time delay safes in every CVS Pharmacy store in the state of California. Time delay safes help deter pharmacy robberies by electronically delaying the time it takes for pharmacy employees to be able to open the safe. CVS Pharmacy first implemented time delay safes in Indianapolis, a city experiencing a high volume of pharmacy robberies, in 2016. Tesco's New CEO Tells Court In $353M U.S. Fraud Trial
"Shocked When Reading Legacy Paper" 3 Weeks Into New Job
Lewis, a witness at the fraud trial of Tesco’s ex-managing director Chris Bush and ex-UK food commercial director John Scouler, said he was presented with the so-called “legacy” paper on Friday 19 September 2014, just three weeks after joining the company.

The company’s general counsel Adrian Morris presented him with the legacy paper, which had been drawn up by Tesco finance director Amit Soni, the whistle blower, which calculated that Tesco had misstated £246m ($353M U.S.) of profits in its accounts.

Lewis said the paper “took two readings” and said the “most striking” implication was that there had been a “potential misstatement” in the firm’s results in the first half of the financial year. The detailed paper also talked about a number of accounting techniques used at Tesco to flatter the company’s figures.

Both Scouler and Bush had previously seen the legacy paper but prosecutors said they remained silent about what was contained in the document.

Lewis pulled together a team which spent the weekend trawling through documents alongside Tesco’s auditors PwC, he also instructed audit firm Deloitte to carry out a separate review.

Lewis said by Sunday it had become clear there was a “significant issue” and Lewis and Tesco’s board agreed a statement to be issued to the stockmarket at 7am on Monday 22 September.

The statement, which sent Tesco’s shares price plunging, said Tesco believed it had overstated profits for the first half of 2014 by an estimated £250m “due to the accelerated recognition of commercial income and delayed accrual of costs."

Bush and Scouler have both been charged with one count of fraud and false accounting. cityam.com

New York Issues Final Guidance on Sexual-Harassment Policies
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently enacted an anti-sexual-harassment law with stringent requirements for employers' anti-harassment policies and training. A key component of the new law went into effect Oct. 9 and requires every employer in New York to establish a sexual-harassment prevention policy. In addition, New York employers must provide employees with sexual-harassment prevention training that, under the final guidance, must be completed by Oct. 9, 2019 (i.e., one year after the law's effective date).

Since the publication of the initial draft on Aug. 23, the NYSDOL made a number of significant changes to the final guidance and model materials, which include a model anti-harassment policy, model complaint form, and model training program. lternatively, employers may adopt a similar policy and training program that meets or exceeds the minimum standards of the model policy and training. shrm.org

Amazon scraps secret AI recruiting tool that showed bias against women
Amazon.com Inc’s machine-learning specialists uncovered a big problem: their new recruiting engine did not like women.

The team had been building computer programs since 2014 to review job applicants’ resumes with the aim of mechanizing the search for top talent, five people familiar with the effort told Reuters. Automation has been key to Amazon’s e-commerce dominance, be it inside warehouses or driving pricing decisions. The company’s experimental hiring tool used artificial intelligence to give job candidates scores ranging from one to five stars - much like shoppers rate products on Amazon, some of the people said.

But by 2015, the company realized its new system was not rating candidates for software developer jobs and other technical posts in a gender-neutral way. That is because Amazon’s computer models were trained to vet applicants by observing patterns in resumes submitted to the company over a 10-year period. Most came from men, a reflection of male dominance across the tech industry.

In effect, Amazon’s system taught itself that male candidates were preferable. It penalized resumes that included the word “women’s,” as in “women’s chess club captain.” And it downgraded graduates of two all-women’s colleges, according to people familiar with the matter. reuters.com

Sears reportedly misses vendor payments while banks push for liquidation
After news broke this week that Sears was arranging a possible bankruptcy filing, Reuters reported early on Thursday that the retailer has missed payments to vendors, adding to imminent bankruptcy concerns. Later in the morning, The Wall Street Journal reported that a group of lenders — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup — are pushing for Sears to liquidate in Chapter 7 rather than reorganize in Chapter 11. Unnamed sources cautioned in the Journal story that "the situation is fluid and that Sears could still find another source of capital to prop it up through a restructuring." Walmart sales associates may not be able to read customers’ minds, but they soon might be able to monitor shoppers’ heart rates to get a little more insight on how they’re faring during their shopping trip.

The company’s recently published patent application — titled “System And Method For A Biometric Feedback Cart Handle” — aims to equip shopping cart handles with the ability to gather biometric data to determine when customers might need help.

The patent states that “the shopping cart, upon being moved, ‘wakes up’ from being in a low-power or ‘sleep’ state mode.” Then, readings on temperature, pulse, speed, and the force at which someone grips the handle or pushes the cart would be used to create a baseline of the customer’s condition. cbinsights.com

UK Amazon staff ‘forced to work in sub-zero temperatures in giant warehouse’
STAFF at an Amazon warehouse have been forced to work in sub-zero conditions, according to shocking claims revealed today. Workers at the facility in Dundee had to fill out orders for the US retail giant in conditions around 3C — which then fell below 0C overnight, it is alleged. Health and Safety Executive advice states that warehouses should be around 13C.

It comes as trade union GMB said there were more than 440 serious accidents at Amazon's UK sites since 2015. Workers' injuries including fractures, head wounds and collisions with heavy equipment have doubled in just four years, according to Freedom of Information data. GMB General secretary Tim Roache said: “These figures give a horrifying insight into (Amazon’s) warehouses. No one should go to work worried about breaking bones.”

The company has faced intense criticism over its working practises and tax affairs in the past. But an Amazon spokesman said: “According to the UK governments Health and Safety Executive RIDDOR, Amazon has 43 per cent fewer injuries on average than other transportation and warehousing companies in the UK. Focus Report: Technologies to ensure online security
The global average cost of a data breach to a business is $3.86 million, which is a 6.6% jump from a year earlier. In the U.S., the average price tag swells to $7.91 million per breach, according to the Ponemon Institute’s recently released report “2018 Cost of a Data Breach Study: Global Overview.”

The reason behind those rising costs are twofold; the average cost for each lost record grew 4.8% and the average size of data breaches increased 2.2%. The report was based on interviews with 2,200 information technology, data protection and compliance professionals from 477 companies that have had a data breach in the last 12 months. Hundreds of retail, law enforcement attend
ORCAID's 4th annual conference

ORCAID's 4th Annual Conference was a resounding success. The event hosted hundreds of attendees, with food and beverage donated from local retailers, and the presenters covered a range of topics. The money raised at the event will help fund the organization and provide support for future training. This conference helped work towards the organization's mission of combating Organized Retail Crime.

The conference started with an introduction by ORCAID Chairman, Ed Fritz, from the Boise Police Department. An ORCAID training scholarship was awarded to Chantal McMillen from Albertsons, and Officer Ryan Thueson, from the Boise Police Department.

A training session on REID Interviewing Techniques was presented by Joseph P. Buckley of John E. Reid and Associates. Ruben Banuelos, Senior Organized Retail Crime Investigator for Home Depot, and Adam Schloegel, Organized Retail Crime Investigator for the Boise Police Department, presented a case study on organized retail criminals that were apprehended in Boise but had impacted the majority of the United States.

Napa, CA: Police seeking suspects in theft of $17,000 worth of car gear
The Napa Police Department posted on Facebook Wednesday afternoon three photos of men who are thought to have stolen more than $17,000 worth of equipment from a store on Auto Row. The photos are blurry, but appear to depict three men who police say used a crowbar to break into Audio House, an auto shop that specializes in car customization. napavalleyregister.com

Queens, NY: Man sentenced to 1 1/2 to 3 years for theft of $3,300 of merchandise from JFK Airport stores
A Brooklyn man has been sentenced for buying plane tickets so he could steal thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the shops at JFK Airport on more than one occasion, prosecutors announced on Wednesday. Eric Love, 51, pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny in July and agreed to pay $3,363. He was sentenced to serve between 1 1/2 and three years in prison. According to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown, Love was seen on surveillance footage at JFK Airport committing one theft that occurred at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2017. He stole more than 34 bottles of Chanel, Tom Ford, Hugo Boss, Gucci and Dior fragrances from a store located inside of the departure gate of Terminal Five. Love was then seen placing the items, valued at $3,300, into a Nike rolling bag and leaving the store without paying for the items. qns.com

West Nyack, NY: Duo Stole $1,200 in Merchandise From Lord & Taylor
Two men were nabbed with more than $1,000 in goods allegedly stolen from the Lord & Taylor at the Palisades Mall in West Nyack. The men, both from Queens, were arrested after Clarkstown police responded to the mall for a report of shoplifting, said Clarkstown Police Det. Sgt. Peter Walker. The suspects, Juan Hernandez, 30, of Elmhurst, and Jeffrey Giraldo, 32, of Jackson Heights, were reportedly observed by loss prevention employees taking merchandise valued at $1,213.70, Walker said. London, England: Moped thugs flee smoke-filled watch shop before crashing motorbike inside shopping centre, 1 woman injured
Six raiders riding three bikes targeted the store in the Brent Cross shopping centre in North West London at 7pm last night. Footage shows a huge axe on the floor just yards from the shop which was filling up with smoke following the raid. Police and shoppers tried to chase after the thieves and cops have today confirmed they arrested two men on conspiracy to rob. One of the motorbikes was seen on the floor in the shopping centre as panicked onlookers tried to sprint away from the scene. Police are still hunting the four other suspects who fled the scene on two motorcycles and it is unclear whether anything was stolen. thesun.co.uk

San Diego, CA: Woman fatally shot in Grocery store parking lot in Point Loma Heights
A woman died after getting shot in a parking lot in Point Loma, police said Wednesday. The woman and a man were standing in a Baron’s Market parking lot at 4013 West Point Loma Boulevard. The two people were heard arguing before the gunshot. The unidentified woman was found on the ground as a black sedan sped east on W. Point Loma Boulevard around 11:45 p.m. She was taken to a hospital where she died, police said. Police were searching for the gunman described as a black man in his mid-30s wearing dark clothing. fox5sandiego.com

San Diego, CA: Police Seeks 2 Suspects After Homicide at East Village Flooring Store
San Diego Police are searching for two suspects after an apparent homicide at a flooring store in the East Village downtown. A customer at Bottom Price Flooring called 911 at 3:42 p.m. to report a dead man in the store. Police and paramedics found a man with no pulse and trauma to his upper body. timesofsandiego.com

Update: Baby dies from injuries sustained in crash during Police chase
Ronald Jones, 31, fled from police in his car after shoplifting steak, lobster tails and beer from a Parma Giant Eagle store, according to police. The chase started around 5 a.m. Monday after police attempted to stop Jones. Jones was coming from Ridge Road when it made a right turn on Pearl Road and crashed into a garbage truck. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. His 5-month-old daughter, Mylah Jones, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, before succumbing to those injuries a day later. Jones' mother was also injured during the crash but has since been treated and released. Police say criminal charges against her are still pending. news5cleveland.com

Waco, TX: Dollar Tree Robbery / Violent Assault suspect Arrested, Police K-9 killed
The man Waco police had been trying to arrest when a K-9 turned on his handler and was shot has been arrested by U.S. Marshals and is now behind bars. It was Kevin Copeland that police were looking for when they went to a residence last Friday when two-year-old K-9 Kastor attacked his handler as officers breached the front door. Officers shot Kastor when he refused commands to stop his attack on handler Michael Bucher.

Police had obtained an arrest warrant for Copeland in connection with a violent attack on a Dollar Tree clerk and the taking of her phone. Store personnel told police Copeland became irate, assaulted the clerk, destroying things in the store, breaking glass throwing items on the floor, knocking over merchandise displays and picking up a cash register and slamming it to the floor. As he was leaving, he noticed the clerk trying to take his picture with her phone and came back grabbing her phone. She begged him to give the phone back, at which point he is accused of coming toward her, grabbing her by the collar and slamming her to the floor. She told officers he came at her a second time and once again threw her down behind a car, tearing her clothes. centexproud.com

Flatbush, NY: Family seeks justice for man who died after Stop and Shop altercation
The family of a Brooklyn man who died after being tackled by employees at a Flatbush Stop and Shop are still seeking justice. Ralph Nimmons, 51, died after workers at the grocery store suspected him of shoplifting. According to relatives, Nimmons had a heart condition and employees denied his requests for help.

His aunt and uncle met with Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez Wednesday to discuss their nephew's death and to call on new witnesses to come forward. A medical examiner ruled Nimmons' death a homicide just last month. Stop and Shop issued a statement that said, "We remained saddened by the unfortunate event that took place at our Flatbush store on April 14, 2018 and we are continuing to cooperate fully with law enforcement." news12.com

Thornton, CO: Walmart shooter takes plea deal to avoid Death Penalty, will spend life in prison
The man who admitted to opening fire nearly a year ago at a Thornton Walmart and killing three people has reached a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty. Scott Ostrem, 48, appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon. He pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of crime of violence. He faced six counts of first-degree murder and 46 other felony charges in the wake of the incident last Nov. 1 at the store located at 9901 Grant St. Ostrem faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Adams County District Attorney Dave Young cleared that decision with victims’ families. 9news.com

Spartanburg County, SC: Trial begins for the murder of KFC Manager
The footage, captured by the security camera in the manager’s office of the Cedar Springs Kentucky Fried Chicken, first showed Tiffany confronting an armed man whose face was covered by a mask. Then, his body stiffened and he fell back toward the store’s safe. When first responders arrived later that night, they found Anthony Tiffany dead of multiple gunshot wounds. Jyquez Julius Freeman, 20, sat in the defendant’s seat. He faces one count of murder, two counts of armed robbery, five counts of kidnapping, and three counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection to the March 31, 2017 robbery that left Tiffany dead. goupstate.com

Update: Houston, TX: 4 men wanted in connection with J.D. Jewelry store robbery
Authorities are looking for four men in connection with a robbery at an area jewelry store in August. On Aug. 20, the four men ran into the J.D. Jewelry Inc. store at the PlaAmericas shopping mall. The men broke display cases with sledgehammers, removed the jewelry and then assaulted an employee who attempted to stop the robbery. The employee suffered a broken jaw and a fracture to his left eye bone, according to authorities. click2houston.com

Lowell, MI: Mom wanted for shoplifting trying to run over store employee turns self in
A West Michigan mother accused of stealing from an area store and then trying to run over the store employee has turned herself into police. Police in Lowell say this is the second time the woman, who has not yet been identified, has been caught stealing from the store before. When confronted by store employees, the suspect allegedly ran out of the store with her two toddlers. She nearly ran over a store employee who presumably was trying to stop her. fox17online.com

Lamont Davis, Jr. sits behind bars with no bond, accused of robbery and sexual battery. In a jailhouse interview Wednesday, he admitted he was at Virginia Center Commons mall last Tuesday, but claimed he didn't do the crime. "Wrong place at the wrong time,” Davis said. “That's what I feel like." Davis said he shops regularly at that particular Henrico County mall, but said he has nothing to do with a violent robbery at a Hot Topic store just over a week ago. wtvr.com

Laredo, TX: Man steals almost $25K worth of Tequila, tries to sell it on social media
More than 1,000 bottles of Patrón were reported stolen from a cargo trailer in mid-September. According to Fortune, the Auto Theft Task Force of the Laredo Police Department began to surveil this one master of mystery when he "began advertising large quantities of Tequila Patron for sale on social media pages." The investigation led them to two separate apartments, where they found: 29 cases of Roca Silver worth $11,310, 17 cases of Gran Patron worth $8,619, Nine cases of mini Patron tequila bottles worth $4,860. Two other suspects have been interviewed, with charges still pending. thetakeout.com

Ring Leader of International Cyber Fraud Ring of 9 - Returned to US to Face $4M Federal Racketeering Charges
Romanian national was returned to the United States Friday to face federal charges that accuse him of being the leader of an international cyber fraud ring that used malware to steal in excess of four million dollars after taking people's passwords, personal identifying information, and bank account information.

According to the indictment, Chita was based in Romania and led a racketeering enterprise that operated in the United States, Romania, Canada, Croatia, Latvia, Hungary, Bosnia, China, Jordan, Malaysia and elsewhere. The goal of the enterprise was to generate money through various criminal acts, including wire fraud, trafficking in counterfeit services, and money laundering. It began operating as early as 2007.

Among other things, Chita's group sent "phishing" emails purporting to be from the Better Business Bureau, the IRS, U.S. Tax Court, the National Payroll Records Center, and others. When a victim clicked on a link in a fraudulent email, specialized malware incorporating a "keylogger" was installed onto the victims' computers, allowing members of the criminal enterprise to capture sensitive and confidential information, including the victims' bank account information.

The defendants also are alleged to have engaged in an extensive campaign of online auction fraud, placing ads for non-existent cars and other expensive items on eBay, Craigslist, Autotrader.com, and other websites. According to the indictment, victims were tricked into wiring thousands of dollars to money mules to purchase these vehicles. The money mules then transferred and laundered the proceeds for the benefit of the enterprise.

Eight other defendants were named in the indictment unsealed today. Two defendants-Daniel Mihai Radu, 39; and Manuel Tudor, 37, -have already been extradited from Romania and are awaiting trial in Cleveland. The other five defendants remain at large. justice.gov

Cleveland, OH: Man sentenced to 6 years for robbing and beating C-Store Owner with a Hammer
Steven Garra, 26, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and felonious assault. The 60-year-old victim was stocking the refrigerator at the Salameh Market on June 24. That's when Garra came up behind him and hit him on the head with a hammer. He ended up hitting the victim 21 times before taking money out of the cash register, prosecutors said. The victim had a concussion, needed 72 staples in his head and had a finger amputated. fox8.com
