Verint expands fraud and risk analytics repertoire with acquisition of Victrio  Verint Systems announced on Tuesday the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire Victrio, an innovator in fraud prevention and identity authentication solutions. CargoNet assists law enforcement in recovery of $12 million in smartphones  
CargoNet, a division of Verisk Crime Analytics, played a pivotal role in the recovery of $12 million in LG smartphones earlier this week, which were discovered in a 2014 Great Dane tractor trailer on October 25. Juan Perez Gonzalez, of Louisville, was arrested and charged with Receiving Stolen Property Over $10,000, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Theft by Unlawful Taking over $1,000,000. Authorities believe the large-scale cargo theft occurred in Gary, Indiana. CargoNet assisted Kentucky State Police, the Louisville Metro Police Department and a slew of other investigative agencies in tracking down and recovering the stolen goods. (Source surfky.com)
 

UPDATE: Continued Coverage of NYC Racial Profiling Case

Sharpton, Barneys NY CEO discuss racial profiling  Civil rights activist Al Sharpton met with the CEO of Barneys New York on Tuesday to discuss allegations of racial profiling at the high-end retailer, while the New York state attorney general's office demanded its own meeting with Barneys and also Macy's. Two black customers accused Barneys of discrimination last week after they said they had lawfully purchased items but were detained by police on suspicion of credit card fraud. "We had a very candid and open meeting today to begin a dialogue," Sharpton said after the private meeting with Barneys CEO Mark Lee at Sharpton's National Action Network office in Harlem. Lee said Barneys' own initial investigation showed no employees were at fault in the two incidents, but he said the retailer does not tolerate discrimination and wants "to be part of the solution" to racial profiling. Macy's flagship Manhattan store also has been hit with a claim from a black actor that he was stopped because of his race while shopping. Macy's didn't comment on the litigation but said in a statement it was investigating. (Source lompocrecord.com)

Barneys case stirs talks on 'Shopping While Black'  Racial profiling has long been common on the shopping scene, with complaints from customers at luxury stores like Barneys New York to neighborhood diners. The New York Attorney General's Office has sent letters to the executives at both Barneys New York and Macy's East, citing allegations the stores profile customers based on race and national origin and stating that was prohibited under state and local civil rights law. "We offer our deepest sympathies' to the two alleged profiling victims, said Barneys CEO Mark Lee, adding that the retailer "has a policy of zero tolerance for discrimination in any form." Mr. Lee said Barney's would "cooperate fully" with the state attorney general. (Source crainsnewyork.com)

Kroger Knows Your Shopping Patterns Better Than You Do  Kroger, the Cincinnati-based grocery store chain, calls the 11 million pieces of direct mail it sends to customers each quarter “snowflakes” — because if any two are the same, it is a fluke. The redemption rate is over 70 percent within six weeks of the mailing. Kroger is the nation’s largest traditional grocery chain with more than 2,400 stores and $80.8 billion in sales last year, second only to Wal-Mart in grocery sales. Working with dunnhumby, the customer data specialist which so impressed the UK’s Tesco that the grocer bought the firm, Kroger tracks each customer as an individual. Those quarterly mailers contain 12 coupons specific to an individual household and are carefully designed. The upper left may offer a slightly esoteric product like a special cheese, while Tide may be lower on the flyer and the last two coupons might be experiments, such as adjacent products — a purchaser of baby food who doesn’t buy diapers might see an offer for diapers, for example. 80% of dunnhumby’s effort is focused on what it knows about a customer and 20 percent is focused on discovery. Signs of Change in 7-Eleven Franchisee Association  7-Elevan franchise owners attend the annual National Coalition of Associations of 7-Elevan Franchises meeting in California. Joe Galea, the president of the San Francisco/Monterey Bay Franchise Owners Association (FOA), has been elected as the NCASEF’s chairman. Galea is a Santa Cruz, Calif-based franchisee who oversees 200 stores in his FOA. Galea previously served as the executive vice chairman of NCASEF from 2008 to 2011. Also attending the Tariq Khan, a former franchisee owner from Long Island who had 5 of his store’s seized by the court for breeching the contact agreement with 7-Elevan. Khan was accused of siphoning hundreds of thousands of dollars for at least four years. Filed in a Brooklyn federal court, the lawsuit seeks $1 million in damages and alleges that Tariq Khan, along with his wife, son and others, diverted cash to buy merchandise inventory from suppliers and never reported the invoices to 7-Eleven. ShopRite cooperative Wakefern Food sues insurer over Hurricane Sandy losses  Wakefern Food Corp., an umbrella group for hundreds of independently-owned and operated ShopRite grocery stores, has sued its insurer for allegedly denying it coverage for more than $50 million in losses it incurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy. According to a complaint filed earlier this month in Superior Court of Middlesex County, Keasbey-based Wakefern accused Lexington Insurance Co., a unit of the American International Group, of breach of contract and bad faith because it has yet to pay out more than a small portion of its losses from the storm. Container Store boosts IPO price range to $18
The Container Store, which is the only national retail chain of storage and organization products, raised the proposed deal size for its upcoming IPO on Wednesday. The Coppell, TX-based company now plans to raise up to $225 million by offering 12.5 million shares at a price range of $17 to $18. The company had previously filed to offer the same number of shares at a range of $14 to $16. At the high end of the revised range, The Container Store Group will raise 20% greater proceeds than previously anticipated. (Source marketwatch.com)


ShopperTrak predicts Dec. 20-24 to be busiest shopping days  Retailers get ready and prepared because according to ShopperTrak, these days will be crazy! Since this year also has a shorter shopping season, retailers must be ready to capture holiday spending in a smaller window of time. The company also predicts that national retail sales will rise 2.4% this season, and the final Saturday before Christmas, will be the second-strongest shopping day of the holiday season. New App Eliminates Card Swiping in Mobile Payments with Number Recognition Technology  With new patent-pending technology from Tantrum Street, the days of credit and debit card swiping may be numbered. Tantrum’s Cartwheel Register app for mobile payments includes number recognition technology that detects and scans the digits directly from a customer’s plastic credit or debit card. When held in a smartphone or tablet camera’s field-of-view, the card number is instantly read, encrypted, tokenized and transmitted to the appropriate payment processors. The app never takes a picture of the card, and no card or primary account number information is ever stored on the device. Merchants also receive a guaranteed flat rate per transaction when using Cartwheel Register, while eliminating the need for costly PCI and EMV upgrades. Since the technology does not read a card’s magnetic stripe or EMV chip, each payment is designated as a card-not-present (CNP) transaction—but with a rate that rivals card-present levels. Sorting out the Confusion over Mobile Payments  Mobile payments are constantly changing these days, from bitcoins to this new program in which your phone can create cryptographic tokens to be used as payment instead of credit card numbers. Credit card companies are embarking on a new program called tokenization, aimed to streamline the mobile payment system for consumers while keeping security. (Source wsj.com)

Finding Tech-Smart Talent a Tough Task for Retailers  Retailers see a need for functional competencies leaning toward technology and data skills, even more than general business and people management. But the survey revealed that 84 percent of retailers are worried that it will be challenging to find employees with these skills. Exacerbating the problem is the overall hiring trend: 93 percent of survey respondents said hiring will not decrease over the next two to three years. (Source apparel.edgl.com)

How Buyers Are Fighting Credit Card Fraud
Across the globe, about one in four credit and debit cardholders have been victimized by card fraud, according to data from ACI Worldwide. Card users in Mexico (44%) and the U.S. (42%) report the highest rates of card fraud -- what ACI phrases as having "direct experience" with fraud from credit and debit card use. Roughly half of credit and debit card consumers shelved their plastic and started using cash immediately after being sidelined by card fraud -- at least for a while. (Source thestreet.com)

New Study Connects Data Breaches to Alarmingly High Rates of Identity Theft  One in four U.S. consumers who suffered a data breach were also victims of identity fraud, according to a new study by Javelin and Identity Finder, "Data at Rest is Data at Risk." Of the 16 million victims notified in 2012 that their payment card information was compromised in a data breach, more than 25 percent of them also suffered identity theft. 4.4 million Americans were both notified that their payment card information was compromised in a data breach and suffered fraud on their existing credit or debit cards. The study examines three high-risk industries: retail, financial and healthcare, and also provides best-practice advice for sensitive data management. According to the study, retailers will remain prime targets for payment card breaches and fraud as long as payment cards remain a commonly accepted and popular payment method. Many violent attacks on retail shopkeepers in the UK are not being reported; study shows 1 in 6 assaults go unreported  The shopworkers' Trade Union Usdaw has revealed interim results of their 2013 survey of violence threats and abuse against shopworkers. The report of the experiences of 1,844 shopworkers from across the UK confirms a worrying trend of retail staff suffering attacks and not reporting the incidents. Threats have come down from 36% to 34% but violent attacks have remained static at 4%, with one in six not reporting the assault. Over the last 10 years Usdaw has been working with employers on its Freedom from Fear campaign and figures reported annually in the British Retail Consortium Crime Survey have shown a steady improvement, but the survey confirms a high number of incidents go unreported. “Brand Damage”; side effect of a cargo theft
One of the more problematic “side effects” of cargo theft for trucking companies and shippers alike is the issue of “brand damage,” especially when stolen goods are resold to consumers that may be made unsafe due to a variety of factors. “If pharmaceuticals and foods are stolen but are not kept at the correct temperatures, then resold back into the market and make consumers sick, that can come back and damage the brands not only of the shippers but of the carriers as well,” Don Hsieh, director of commercial and industrial marketing for Tyco Integrated Security, told Fleet Owner. Lakeland Square Mall abduction ends with police chase, suicide in Brevard, Florida  A woman abducted from Lakeland Square Mall on Monday is safe after her ex-boyfriend fatally shot himself early Tuesday morning in Brevard County after a police chase. Police found the man, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after they used stop sticks to disable the car. It started in Lakeland when Elizabeth Rae Hamilton, 26, was reported missing from her job at the mall. Her mother, Robin Hamilton, called police, and her ex-boyfriend, Brett Lee Curtis, was the prime suspect, according to Lakeland Police. (Source wtsp.com)

Police in Greenville, Alabama make arrest in Tractor Supply Co. thefts  A 41-year-old Pine Apple man was arrested by officers with the Greenville Police Department Thursday for allegedly stealing nearly $2,400 in tools and clothing from Tractor Supply Co. in Greenville. Police Arrest Two on Suspicion of Robbing a Burlington Coat and a Target store four times in Pinole, CA  Pinole police arrested two El Sobrante residents last week on suspicion of armed robbery at the Burlington Coat Factory on Fitzgerald Drive. Officers arrested Gursimran Singh, 27 and Nidhi Warraich, 28, shortly after Singh had allegedly threatened to shoot a store employee who had tried to stop him from stealing a pair of shoes. New Jersey man arrested for role in fake Police scheme to steal $80,000 of cigarettes from a distribution center  A New Jersey man suspected in the armed robbery of a Philadelphia-area cigarette distribution center on Oct. 12 in which four men posing as law enforcement officers made off with tens of thousands of dollars was arrested in a Somerset County hotel late Thursday, police said. On the afternoon of Oct. 12, four men armed with semiautomatic handguns and a shotgun, dressed in all black and wearing law enforcement badges around their necks, held up a cigarette distribution center outside of Philadelphia. Burglary at Zales in Fort Worth, Texas results in the loss of $9732.00 in merchandise  Tuesday at 12:27 AM, a man broke into the Zales store and stole a spinning fixture of 27 pieces of gold merchandise, total value of nearly $10,000. The subject gained entry to the store by breaking the glass on a front window.

Walmart employee steals Halloween
A Murfreesboro Walmart employee was arrested late Monday night after loss prevention officers caught him stealing Halloween items over a period of three weeks. A loss prevention officer reported they had employee Michael Wright, 50, in custody because he had stolen $534.25 worth of merchandise dating back to October 4. FBI Releases 2012 Statistics on Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted

Washington, D.C. — October 28, 2013 — According to statistics collected by the FBI, 95 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents in 2012. Of these, 48 law enforcement officers died as a result of felonious acts, and 47 officers died in accidents. In addition, 52,901 officers were victims of line-of-duty assaults. Comprehensive data tables about these incidents and brief narratives describing the fatal attacks are included in the 2012 edition of Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, released today.

Felonious Deaths
The 48 felonious deaths occurred in 26 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The number of officers killed as a result of criminal acts in 2012 decreased by 24 when compared with the 72 officers who died in 2011. The five- and 10-year comparisons show an increase of seven felonious deaths compared with the 2008 figure (41 officers) and a decrease of four deaths compared with 2003 data (52 officers).

Officer Profiles: The average age of the officers who were feloniously killed was 38 years. The victim officers had served in law enforcement for an average of 12 years at the time of the fatal incidents. Forty-three of the officers were male, and five were female. Forty-two of the officers were white, and six were black.

Circumstances: Of the 48 officers feloniously killed, 12 were killed in arrest situations, eight were investigating suspicious persons or circumstances, eight were conducting traffic pursuits/stops, six were ambushed, five were involved in tactical situations, and four were answering disturbance calls. Three of the slain officers were handling, transporting, or maintaining custody of prisoners; one was conducting an investigative activity, such as surveillance, searches, or interviews; and one officer was killed while handling a person with a mental illness.

Weapons: Offenders used firearms to kill 44 of the 48 victim officers. Of these 44 officers, 32 were slain with handguns, seven with rifles, and three with shotguns. The type of firearm used was not reported in the deaths of two officers. Two officers were killed with vehicles used as weapons, one with personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.), and one with a knife.

Regions: Twenty-two of the felonious deaths occurred in the South, eight in the West, six in the Midwest, and six in the Northeast. Five of the deaths took place in Puerto Rico, and one officer was killed in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Suspects: Law enforcement agencies identified 51 alleged assailants in connection with the felonious line-of-duty deaths. Thirty-three of the assailants had prior criminal arrests, and eight of the offenders were under judicial supervision at the time of the felonious incidents.

Accidental Deaths
Forty-seven law enforcement officers were killed accidentally while performing their duties in 2012. The majority (22 officers) were killed in automobile accidents. The number of accidental line-of-duty deaths was down six from the 2011 total (53 officers).

Officer Profiles: The average age of the officers who were accidentally killed was 39 years, and the average number of years the victim officers had served in law enforcement was 12. Forty-five of the officers were male, and two were female. Thirty-six of the officers were white, nine were black, and two officers were Asian/Pacific Islander.

Circumstances: Of the 47 officers accidentally killed, 22 died as a result of automobile accidents, 10 were struck by vehicles, six died in motorcycle accidents, three were killed in falls, three died in aircraft accidents, two were accidentally shot, and one died in another type of duty-related accident.

Regions: Twenty-seven of the accidental deaths occurred in the South, nine in the Northeast, eight in the West, and three in the Midwest.

Assaults
In 2012, of the 52,901 officers assaulted while performing their duties, 27.7 percent suffered injuries. The largest percentage of victim officers (32.5 percent) were assaulted while responding to disturbance calls. Assailants used personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) in 80.2 percent of the incidents, firearms in 4.3 percent of incidents, and knives or other cutting instruments in 1.7 percent of the incidents. Other types of dangerous weapons were used in 13.9 percent of assaults.

California Couple Stole $37k in Eyeglass Frames from Twin Cities stores in Minnesota  Two suspects have been accused in Anoka County District Court of stealing 160 expensive eyeglass frames from several stores in the Twin Cities, including two in Blaine. Three charged in counterfeit cash-for-merchandise case at Kohl’s in Fort Wayne, Indiana  According to court documents Kyasha L. Walker, 19, was working as a clerk at Kohl's in Northcrest shopping Center, where she accepted counterfeit money from Christopher D. Walker, 19. The latter later returned the items he had purchased for real money. These incidents happened between Aug. 21 and Sept 2. Kyasha L. Walker had at first denied knowing Christopher D. Walker but later admitted he was her cousin. When questioned about whether she had checked for counterfeit money she said she had, but security camera footage showed in three different instances she had not. The Secret Service in Indianapolis recovered from Kohl's 14 counterfeit $50 bills, all with the same serial number. (Source news-sentinel.com)

Nationwide, the baby formula theft rings continue to trouble Law Enforcement  Nation-wide, the peak of baby formula thefts seems to have been around 2011. That’s when Rhett Asher, vice president of industry relations for the Food Marketing Institute, told USA Today that baby formula was a “staple item” for shoplifting rings because it was expensive and always in demand. That same year, two Democratic senators - Amy Klobuchar, of Minnesota, and Robert Casey, of Pennsylvania - introduced legislation aimed at curbing organized theft of medical items such as prescription drugs and formula. Oro Valley Police in Arizona investigating multiple credit card fraud cases  Police are dealing with a handful of cases where suspects are reproducing people's cards and making fraudulent purchases. But the cards themselves are never lost or stolen. September 7th this year: two guys walk into the Oro Valley Walmart with a wallet full of fraudulent credit cards. At the time, nobody even thinks twice because they go through a self-checkout aisle and buy about $250 in merchandise. That is, until those fraudulent charges show up on the account of an unsuspecting victim. (Source tucsonnewsnow.com)

Weis Market in Fredrick County, Maryland seeking the apprehension of a possible ORC ring  Deputies say the thefts happened on July 17 and August 27 at the Weis Markets in Spring Ridge Parkway in Frederick. They say the couple worked together, with the man distracting store employees while the woman filled their cart with various items including baby formula, diapers and paper towels.
