‘CONTROLTEK FlatGuard Offender Report’ Released by the LPRC
Leading retail researcher and industry organization, the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC), has conducted new study on the first EAS tag made specifically for small leather goods, the FlatGuard, made by emerging retail product protection leader, CONTROLTEK.

The study consisted of exposing ten known offenders to the FlatGuard technology and taking them through LPRC’s “See-Get-Fear” interview protocol. “Offender reactions to the FlatGuard seemed to support a story of overall deterrence,” the report states. “They rated the tag highly as a deterrent, and indicated by and large that the tag would result in them abandoning their plan to steal the protected product.”

Luxury goods giant Richemont UK found guilty of racism
The Times reported on Wednesday that Richemont UK‚ the umbrella group for brands including Alfred Dunhill‚ Chloè and Purdey‚ the gunmaker to the royal family‚ had instructed private detectives to spy on one of its London employees after she complained about race discrimination.

Judges at the central London employment tribunal found that 56-year-old Cheryl Spragg‚ who was employed in the accountants’ department at Richemont’s offices in London‚ was the victim of racial discrimination.

One of the most extreme examples of discrimination against Spragg was when she was “snubbed” by a group of colleagues who refused to travel with her in an office lift‚ reported The Times. The tribunal found that Richemont’s human resources team at first attempted to discourage and then tried to suppress Spragg’s discrimination complaint.

The ruling cited evidence from another employee at the company’s London office‚ who was Malaysian Chinese‚ that the working environment was rife with “casual racism” that staff were expected “just to put up with”. timeslive.co

Under Armour: New report on the company's culture was 'tough to read'
Under Armour is telling employees that it will fix the company's culture after a report in The Wall Street Journal revealed a practice that had allowed employees to charge strip club visits to their corporate cards.

In a letter obtained by CNN Business, CEO Kevin Plank and President Patrik Frisk told employees late Monday that the Journal story was "tough to read."

"This is not the culture we envision for Under Armour," they wrote. Plank and Frisk said the company will hasten a "meaningful cultural transformation" that they say is already happening at Under Armour. "We can and will do better," they added.

The letter was sent after the Journal reported earlier Monday that Under Armour (UA) told employees in an email in February that it would no longer reimburse certain expenses, including adult entertainment and gambling. Read the full letter to UA employees here: cnn.com

Sears Vendors Being Offered 55 Cents on the Dollar
Sears suppliers are getting lowball cash offers for receivables
The Sears bankruptcy has made suppliers to the retailer skittish — and some investors are looking to make a buck off the situation.

A group of distressed-debt purchasers has been floating lowball offers for the receivables of vendors who sold clothing, jewelry and home goods to Sears ahead of its Chapter 11 filing, sources told The Post.

Most offers this week range from 55 cents to 70 cents — sharply below rates that would more typically fall in “the high 80s,” admits Adam Stein-Sapir of Pioneer Funding Group, a claims-trading firm.

The bids are for merchandise that was shipped to Sears within 20 days of its Oct. 15 bankruptcy filing — goods that typically would be paid in full under a Chapter 11 reorganization.

Last year, Toys ‘R’ Us vendors had expected to get paid in full after the toy giant filed for Chapter 11. Instead, they got 22 cents on the dollar after the toy retailer staged a surprise liquidation a few months later.

The Florida Law Enforcement Property Recovery Unit annual conference proved once again why we are the premier law enforcement and private partnership conference within the State of Florida. This year’s conference again surpassed the previous year’s attendance with attendees representing 26 Sherriff’s Offices, 29 Police Departments, and 15 retailers.

FLEPRU recognized Detectives Michael Wilds and Detective Eric Fernandez from the Sunrise Police Department as Investigators of the Year for a case involving a distraction theft group that were using fireworks to cause chaos and panic within malls throughout the Southeast United States to steal Rolex watches. We also recognized Lindsey Campbell from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office for her exceptional analytical support in several high profile violent crimes. The Business Partner of the Year recipient, Rick Gonzalez from Walgreens, was also recognized. Lt. Nancy Alvarez of the Monroe Sheriff’s Office nominated Mr. Gonzales for his assistance during the Hurricane Irma relief response that devastated the Florida Keys in September of 2017.

This year’s outstanding training curriculum started off with keynote speaker Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. His inspirational speech, “Leadership From The Ledge”, set the positive and motivational tone for the conference which was followed up by two and half days of exceptional training. The training concluded with interview & interrogation class presented by Dave Thompson from Wicklander-Zulawski (W-Z). I heard from a Detective with over ten years of experience that he learned more in the three hour presentation by Dave Thompson than he has learned in years of advanced law enforcement training he has attended.

Hackers Gear Up for the Holidays Too
November marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Consumers are making their shopping lists. Retailers are gearing up for the rush of shoppers. And hackers are honing their skills and using new tools to take advantage of the spike in online transactions. A 2018 survey (PDF) by RetailMeNot shows that consumers are expected to spend an average of $803 holiday shopping during Black Friday weekend, up from an average of $743 last year, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday projected to be the top two desktop and mobile shopping days of the year. While 67 percent of shoppers will go to department stores, 60 percent plan to shop with online-only retailers.

As consumers spend more money online, the opportunities for fraud increase and so does the level of sophistication threat actors employ to conduct card fraud. Many tactics are aimed at Card Not Present (CNP) fraud, when the card is used online and over the phone and the Europay, Mastercard and Visa (EMV) chip technology has no mitigating effects.

One of the latest examples is Magecart, a toolkit of malicious software that was recently used to infect the websites of some clients of Shopper Approved, a customer review plug-in that hundreds of e-commerce sites use to collect reviews and help increase sales. When the plug-in was installed on payment pages of websites, Magecart could embed malware into the plug-in and capture shoppers’ payment card data. Fortunately, the incident was discovered before the holiday shopping season was in full swing, mitigating the potential for widespread payment card skimming. Why Password Management and Security Strategies Fall Short
Researchers say companies need to rethink their password training and take a more holistic approach to security. One says that companies need to make password management easier, while the other emphasizes a defense-in-depth approach that includes both technology and training, thereby putting less of a burden on humans.

David Jacoby, a senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, found in his firm's study that for less than $50, a criminal can buy a person's full digital identity. This includes personal data stolen from social media and bank accounts, gaming websites, and streaming media accounts.

Most of the data thefts are executed via spear-phishing or by exploiting security vulnerabilities in a Web application, Jacoby says. After a successful attack, the criminal will obtain a password dump, which contains a combination of email addresses and passwords for the hacked service. Helena-West Helena, AR: Employees charged in Beauty Supply store $70,000 theft ring
A massive theft ring in Arkansas is now broken up. Police say, the women who were arrested were the ones supplying the beauty. Baha Hamed is the owner of Beauty and Company. He says it took about a year for the investigation to be completed, but he's finally got the bad employees out of the store.

"We kind of realized that was an inside job, but we couldn't put our finger on it," Hamed said. The business owner has stores in Mississippi and Memphis. But it's his store in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas where things weren't adding up. "We were missing over $10,000 in hair products," he said. Investigators say the former employees eventually took more than $70,000 worth of stuff. wreg.com

Grand Forks, SD: Man pleads guilty to stealing $16,000 worth of items from Shoe Carnival
A man pleaded guilty Monday for his part in stealing around $16,000 of merchandise from a store in Columbia Mall. Aundrae Valentine Brown, 31, will spend 90 days behind bars and pay back the remaining money, around $11,500, to Shoe Carnival during a three-year probation period. Court documents allege Brown and a juvenile were caught on security camera placing unpaid items into bags on February 22. They admitted to police in written statements that they'd stolen about $16,000 from November 2017 until February. Brown also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The maximum penalty for the felony theft charge was 10 years in prison. grandforksherald.com

Portland, TX: Walmart Shoplifting call leads Police to Identity Theft Ring
According to the Portland Police the incident began as a shoplifting call but resulted in the discovery of a storage unit filled with stolen ID's and credit cards. Police confiscated more than 40 credit cards and 45 driver's licenses. According to Police, officers responded to a shoplifting call at Walmart on Saturday. The suspects attempted to drive away but were stopped by officers. That is when one of the suspects used the name of a victim in an ongoing identity theft investigation. The investigations lead officers to a storage in Corpus Christi where they found information of more than 45 people. kztv10.com

One of four women who tried to steal 26 pairs of blue jeans worth thousands of dollars has been sentenced to prison. The Lawrence Journal-World reports 25-year-old Shaikeece Whisonant was sentenced Tuesday to nearly two years in prison for robbery. She was one of four women who tried to steal the jeans, worth more than $4,200, from The Buckle in downtown Lawrence. They dropped 22 pairs and ultimately stole only four pairs, valued at $805. Prosecutors say one of the women maced a store employee and Whisonant punched an employee in the head. Whisonant, who has three small children, is currently serving a prison sentence for a Johnson County theft conviction. Prosecutors say she 18 prior convictions, mostly misdemeanor theft and traffic cases. washingtontimes.com

Winona, MN: Felony charges for a man who attempted to 'return' $1,400 of merchandise at Menard’s
Garang Kaul Maniang Deng, 22, was referred for felony theft, obstructing the legal process, fleeing police on foot and giving a false name, after he reportedly attempted to return $1,400 of unpurchased merchandise and led Winona police on a chase. Deng entered Menards shortly before 12:45 p.m. Friday, filled a cart with merchandise and attempted to return the items at customer service. winonadailynews.com

Collinsville, IL: Armed robbers flee with cash and ‘significant amount of high-end eyewear
Two men robbed All About Eyes on Tuesday evening in Collinsville, according to police. The armed robbery happened around 7 p.m., Collinsville Major Brett Boerm said. Two men entered the store and displayed a weapon. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash along with a “significant” amount of high-end eye glass frames, Boerm said. bnd.com

Brooklyn, NY: Man Shot, Killed in Target at Brooklyn's City Point Shopping Center
A man being chased by a group of men armed with a machete shot and killed another man inside a Brooklyn target minutes before the store was set to close, police say. The fury unfolded at the store’s location at City Point, a multi-use shopping center on Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn, around 11:30 p.m., when the alleged gunman stormed inside as he was being chased by at least four men he had just gotten into a dispute with, according to the NYPD. The victim, 25-year-old-year-old Carlton Spencer, tried to approach the shooter from the side when the gunman turned to the would-be attacker and shot him once in the chest, said police, who added the victim was unarmed. The other three men in the group fled the area, but were quickly taken into custody, police said. The shooter was also taken into custody; their names have not yet been released. Spencer was rushed to an area hospital, but was unable to be saved. Police said he had a criminal history, with his most recent arrest happening just days ago. nbcnewyork.com

Tulsa, OK: Police Searching For People Committing 'Takeover-Style' Robberies
Tulsa police are looking for a robbery crew that’s doing takeover-style robberies, holding employees at gunpoint and making them open the store safe. Surveillance video has been released from a robbery at a McDonald’s. The video shows two people enter with guns, trying to cover their faces, and head straight for the back of the restaurant. “It’s a takeover-style robbery. They come in at closing time with guns, take over the store, or whatever it happens to be, and leave with cash,” said Sergeant Brian Blair.

In this case, one of the robbers forced a worker into a back room and then took everything out of a safe. His partner walked in with a gun and made the worker leave. Police believe the same two people have robbed four different places. They believe there could be five suspects altogether. newson6.com

Mobile, AL: Police say a shoplifter is a danger to the public
Mobile Police say a small time thief, very well known to them, has suddenly upped his game and is now considered armed and dangerous. This past August, police say 45-year-old Charles David Pickens stole merchandise and food from the Walmart on Theodore-Dawes Road. A store worker confronted him in the parking lot, but he threatened her with a knife, then drove off. Investigators say just by producing the knife, Pickens took the crime from a simple theft to a robbery, which carries a harsher penalty. They want him off the streets. Pickens arrest history includes 17 felony arrests, as well as property theft, drug offenses, and reckless endangerment. fox10tv.com

Progress or moving forward has as much to do with which way you're facing as anything else.
