Hong Kong Protesters Trash $2 Billion Mall, Burn Christmas Tree
Hong Kong protesters caused “extensive damage” to the
Festival Walk shopping center last week, including torching the mall’s Christmas tree. Glass panels at the mall’s entrance were smashed, and the office lobby and balustrades on various levels of the mall were also damaged, Singapore-based Mapletree North Asia Commercial Trust Ltd., which owns Festival Walk, said in a statement last week.

The damage occurred during a night of pitched battles between protesters and police. The protests, which have been raging for five months in pursuit of greater democracy in the former British colony, intensified Friday after a student died of injuries sustained near a protest.

Festival Walk, located near the Kowloon Tong subway station, has
more than 200 retail stores and restaurants, including Apple, Marks & Spencer and Uniqlo. The mall was Mapletree’s first commercial property acquisition in Hong Kong -- bought in 2011 for S$2.9 billion ($2.1 billion). bloomberg.com

Calls Grow for Added Security at Staten Island Mall
Rally held in wake of violent encounter

A rally was held at the Staten Island Mall Monday night in the wake of a frightening encounter with a group of teenagers that left two women badly shaken — the latest incident after a string of alleged assaults at the location caused police to ramp-up their presence last summer.

Despite the NYPD’s increased presence in the immediate aftermath of the summer attacks, protestors on Monday said they felt that security at the mall is still a profoundly concerning issue and they believed that the most recent incident indicated that not enough is being done to protect shoppers. silive.com ny1.com

Central England Co-op begins campaign to cut violence and aggression in stores
The Central England Co-op has called for an end to violence and aggression towards shop workers as part of a new campaign, which includes closer ties with police and in-store posters. The retailer - one of the largest independent retail co-operative societies in the UK - has linked up with all major police forces across its trading estate of 16 counties.

It comes after it was revealed that
since January this year, Central England Co-op has recorded 275 incidents of threats/intimidation, 171 cases of verbal abuse and 72 assaults. Nationally, based on figures released by the British Retail Consortium, 115 shop workers a day are attacked or threatened in stores.

The crackdown will be supported by an internal poster campaign in store, closer links with local police forces, lobbying government for changes in the law and several new measures in stores including:

● Centrally monitored CCTV systems that allow colleagues to call for assistance at the touch of a button
● Increased use of security officers and store detectives
● Stringent cash controls
● New colleague training on how to deal with situations involving violence or aggression
● Working with offenders to help them beat addictions and support their integration back into the community

The new campaign comes on the back of a major drive by the retailer in an effort to reduce levels of crime in stores. The rollout of a string of new measures last year to reduce incidents saw
burglaries drop by 6% and robberies drop by 30%, the Co-op said. thegrocer.co.uk

After 'Mr. Grinch' steals cash registers,
Minnesota's Largest Candy Store calls in the artillery

In light of a recent string of business burglaries across rural Scott County, Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store, inline with their signature tongue-in-cheek brand, is prepared to defend their premises with a significant boost in security.

A 16-ton Abbot military tank rolled up to the Jordan candy store Saturday afternoon to help ward off any would-be criminals. The British tank, transported by Drive-A-Tank in Kasota, is outfitted with a 105mm gun and a fully-rotating rear turret.

“The owner of Drive-A-Tank will be delivering his tank in a joint effort to restore peace and justice in this part of the valley,” candy store employee Jerry “The Soda Guy” Kornder said.

The candy store was the target of an early-morning burglary on Halloween, when suspects stole three cash registers and two vehicles parked at the store. But the Saturday display signals that the candy store won’t take the transgression lying down. The tank is set to remain outside the store for a couple weeks until the end of their season. swnewsmedia.com

Portland, ME Considers Ban on Facial Recognition Technology
Maine's largest city is considering a ban on its employees using facial recognition technology. Monday night, Portland's city council passed a motion to postpone a vote whether or not to prohibit city agencies from using it or data gathered by third parties using facial recognition. The issue will be discussed again Jan. 6.

"I don't want to wait until it becomes more complicated," said Pious Ali, one of the city councilors proposing the ban. "It's a proactive measure." Beyond privacy, Ali is concerned about racial bias in facial recognition programs. If Ali succeeds in pushing a ban through,
Portland would join a small but growing number of U.S. communities with similar laws, including Somerville, Massachusetts, and San Francisco. necn.com

'Junior's Law' Would Require NY Business Owners to Install Panic Buttons
A proposed law in New York City would create a panic button program for small businesses. The measure, named after 15-year-old Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz, would reimburse owners of 24/7 business, such as bodegas and gas stations, for the expense of installing an emergency button to directly connect them with the NYPD.

“Junior’s Law” is named after Guzman-Feliz, who was murdered in June 2018, after gang members allegedly mistook him for a rival gang member and stabbed him to death. His mother believes if the bodega had a panic button, her son might have survived the attack. securitymagazine.com

Outgoing NYPD Commissioner 'respects' Bloomberg for stopping stop-and-frisk
Outgoing New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill said he respects former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for apologizing for supporting the controversial "stop-and-frisk" policy, and noted that stopping suspects is an important part of the job – if done so correctly and constitutionally.

“It's an important tool,” O’Neill told FOX Business of stop and frisk, “but it has to be used correctly and obviously it has to be used constitutionally. It's a good way ... to get weapons off the street. And, you know, this is part of neighborhood policing. Precision policing is making sure that we focus on the people involved in violence and crime. And if we do that, we do it respectfully and constitutionally, I think people understand that.” foxbusiness.com

Credit Suisse Warns That U.S. Store Closings May Worsen in 2020
U.S. retail store closures in 2020 are at risk to be just as bad -- or even worse -- than 2019, according to a Credit Suisse report. There have been
7,600 U.S. store closures announced in 2019 to date, representing the highest number of closures ever at this point in the year, according to the firm’s 24-year-old U.S. Retail Store Closure Index.

Around 75% of those stores are Softlines, also known as apparel or textiles. There are multiple reasons for this trend, according to the report. “Softlines spending has deteriorated as retailers struggle to lap a tax reform-driven step-up in 2018 discretionary spending.” In addition, there have been “powerful changes” in purchasing habits in this category, including the growing popularity of the online luxury-goods consignment shop The RealReal Inc., the rental space with players like Rent the Runway Inc., and a “continued push towards all things digital” seen at the Revolve Group Inc. The result is added pressure to already-challenged traffic trends at “over-stored” brick and mortar retailers. bloomberg.com

Losing to win: Why major retailers need to close more stores
That begs the industry's Goldilocks question: What size footprint is "just right"?

It comes down to an imperfect set of calculations, according to Nick Egelanian, president of retail real estate development firm SiteWorks, who says it's helped somewhat by technologies, like geofencing, that track traffic. "What the retailer is going for is to have the optimal number of stores that maximizes the performance of each store — the net cost to build the store, net cost to operate the store, net cost of the goods in the store — for a certain threshold return on investment. Some are better at it than others.
The commodity retailers and retailers like TJX are the best at it because they already know a lot about their customers even without geofencing."

The biggest challenge is faced by specialty retailers, he said, especially in an era where the mall has become "archaic." "They're dependent on the overall tenant mix — Walmart isn't dependent on the other guys, while Williams Sonoma is very dependent," he said, noting that, while a Walmart store has maybe a 2% chance of failure to perform against expectations, for others it's 50/50. retaildive.com

New Platform Helps Retailers & Employees Through the Store Closure Process
CareerFlex, a new outplacement platform, is designed to support employees through the closure process, while also providing retailers with a pipeline of qualified associates. Through the mobile platform, employees can access coaching, job listings and a 24/7 online support team. CareerFlex believes that this can help boost morale and improve job performance, particularly when leveraged alongside the letter of recommendation feature; employees who remain with the retailer until the end of the store closing will receive a letter of recommendation from CareerFlex. footwearnews.com

Fed. Circ. Upholds Walgreen's Win in Card Reader Security Tech Case
The Federal Circuit upheld a lower court’s decision dismissing a patent infringement lawsuit against Walgreen Co. over credit card reader technology, days after one judge told the inventor this was an “open and shut case.” The appeals court summarily affirmed a December 2018 ruling in the Northern District of Illinois that found William Grecia failed to lay out a viable argument that Walgreen’s card reader machines infringe his patent.

The lawsuit was one of dozens that Grecia has filed ove

How Planet Fitness Uses Hanwha Cameras for More Than Security

Planet fitness tapped integrator Adirondack Direct to install Hanwha’s 360-degree cameras with Genetec Security Center to increase security and boost operational efficiencies

TEANECK, N.J. - Planet Fitness is known for being a welcoming gym for everybody. In an effort to keep its members safe, comfortable and improve business operations, the company turned to system integrator Adirondack Direct to install a video surveillance solution from Hanwha Techwin and Genetec.

Each of Planet Fitness’ corporate-owned clubs throughout North America is outfitted with approximately eight to 15 video cameras that provide around the clock coverage of the parking lot, lobby, break room, the fitness area where members workout and other key areas — without invading private areas, such as locker rooms and other intimate spaces.

Planet Fitness Senior Vice President of Corporate Club Operations Jim Esposito says the company ultimately chose to implement Hanwha’s 360-degree cameras in particular because they provide more coverage, yet they save in hardware expenses because fewer cameras are needed.

Hanwha’s SNF-8010 5 MP 360-degree fisheye camera provides 5MP at 20FPS which captures smoother video at a higher framerate with true day and night function, according to the company.

Built-in on-camera de-warping allows instant access to p/t/z, quad view and panorama views. Alarm triggers for the Hanwha SNF-8010 include intelligent motion detection, audio detection, tampering detection, alarm input and network disconnection.

A typical system setup at Planet Fitness includes placing cameras 25 feet from the wall and 50 feet apart which provides almost 2,000 square feet of coverage per camera, according to the company.

Club managers, regional managers and corporate employees manage the system via Genetec Security Center which provides bookmarks of recorded incidents, ensuring events are already tagged when conducting a search. Additionally, Genetec integrates business intelligence analytics which notifies Planet Fitness if club equipment policies are being violated or abused.

Planet Fitness and Adirondack Direct manage the Enterprise via Genetec Cloud Federation as a Service (FaaS). Cloud FaaS enables customers to view all Genetec Equipped Facilities in real time, create and audit reports, administer system settings and users and monitor the health of all cameras and NVRs on premises.

Adirondack Direct also offers a 24-hour monitoring service and liaisons with law enforcement when needed.

Macy's E-Commerce Site Hacked
Customer Payment Info Stolen in Magecart Data Breach

Macy's has announced that they have suffered a data breach due to their web site being hacked with malicious scripts that steal customer's payment information.

This type of compromise is called MageCart attack and consists of hackers compromising a web site so that they can inject malicious JavaScript scripts into various sections of the web site. These scripts then steal payment information that is submitted by a customer.

According to a 'Notice of Data Breach' issued by Macy's, their web site was hacked on October 7th, 2019 and a malicious script was added to the 'Checkout' and 'My Wallet' pages. If any payment information was submitted on these pages while they were compromised, the credit card details and customer information was sent to a remote site under the attacker's control.

Macy's states that they were alerted to this hack on October 15th, 2019, a full week after the site was breached and attackers were collecting payment information. bleepingcomputer.com

Web payment card skimmers add anti-forensics capabilities
Researchers have detected compromises on ecommerce sites with a new JavaScript-based payment card skimmer that uses anti-forensics techniques, including the ability to remove itself from the web page’s code after execution. Dubbed Pipka, the malicious script was found by researchers from Visa’s Payment Fraud Disruption (PFD) team on the site of a North American merchant that had been previously infected with a different skimmer called Inter. Further investigation uncovered another 16 online merchant sites infected with Pipka.

The new threat on the block

Web skimming is the theft of payment card details from ecommerce websites through malicious scripts injected into them. The scripts are typically injected into the checkout pages to siphon off card information as it is entered by buyers into web forms.

This type of attack has become popular over the past few years, with the rise of one particular skimmer called Magecart that over a dozen groups use. Despite using the same skimmer, these groups employ different techniques and methods to inject their malicious code into websites and keep it hidden.

Some exploit known vulnerabilities. Others compromise legitimate third-party scripts that are loaded into websites, like those for web analytics services, and there is evidence that some groups are compromising routers used to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in airports and other public spaces to inject their code into legitimate traffic. csoonline.com

$1.6M Neiman Marcus Breach Deal Approved On 2nd Try
An Illinois federal judge gave initial approval Friday to a $1.6 million settlement for Neiman Marcus consumers looking to hold the company accountable following a 2013 data breach, after rejecting an earlier deal because of conflicts between class members. U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman said the revised settlement appears reasonable, fair and adequate, and certified a class of Neiman Marcus customers who had shopped at the department store while malware was attacking its system.

Approximately 370,385 cards were used at the stores while the malware was scraping Neiman Marcus' computer system, according to the settlement agreement, which did not require Neiman Marcus to admit liability. Of the cards that were exposed, approximately 9,200 were later used fraudulently, the company said. law360.com

Can Online Retailers Confront Their Hidden, Human Costs?

Is it time for consumers to confront the human cost of expedited shipping?

As we gear up for Black Friday and the busiest shopping season of the year, one of the biggest ethical issues emerging in the retail industry isn’t about workers a world away, but the ones in our own backyard. With complaints of inhumane working conditions, high injury rates and low pay, the fulfillment sector is the latest to face controversy, as warehouse workers in North America and Europe speak out about the true cost of same-day and door-to-door delivery.

Calling Out Convenience Culture

Monoliths like Amazon have achieved market domination by offering expedited shipping at high volume, inspiring retailers to compete by aiming for ever-shorter delivery times. While it’s easy to blame Amazon Inc. and the like for creating the situation, the fact is this dynamic is a response to a consumer culture that demands convenience, speed and instant gratification. This isn’t to say consumers are entirely to blame. There is mounting evidence that shoppers would reevaluate whether they really need that shiny new object right away if they were better educated on the human cost of ultra-quick delivery.

Employing Automation While Future-Proofing Workers

Despite Amazon’s move to boost wages, improve benefits and create more permanent positions for its American workers, the fact is, warehouse jobs aren’t exactly what most people strive for. It’s demanding work with difficult hours and little opportunity to learn transferable skills. Future-proofing warehouses and other entry-level workers will likely take a much broader effort, including government participation and community groups working together with the companies that have relied on vulnerable communities to make their business models work. It’s a long game that requires investment on multiple fronts because it’s crucial on multiple levels. Helping these workers transition isn’t just about ensuring individual livelihoods, but also enabling a future with a consumer base capable of supporting commerce as we know it.

Embracing Ethics as a Competitive Edge

As more online retailers turn to third-party logistics companies to handle fulfillment and shipping, competition in this space is starting to heat up. This has created an opportunity for retailers to demand more accountability from logistics providers. Just as consumers are placing pressure on retailers to adopt ethical supply chains, retailers have the ability to pass that pressure on. Brands shopping around for logistics providers can demand or request fair treatment of workers as a condition for business. At the same time, logistics providers hoping to compete with players like Amazon can do so by carving out an ethical niche, using fair labor practices as a differentiator in a marketplace dominated by giants. wwd.com

Professionalism or the lack thereof is a reflection of a person's inner self. How an executive presents themselves and talks about their former jobs, bosses and colleagues is a real indication of how they'll talk tomorrow about who they're working with today. And while it's human nature to be interested in the gossip, it's usually the wolf in sheep's clothing and the one who has the need to rationalize that has the most to say.

Just a Thought,
Gus
