Inside ADT's Mergers And Acquisitions Of US Security Integrators

ADT Inc.’s planned acquisition of Red Hawk Fire & Security, Boca Raton, Fla., is the latest move in ADT Commercial’s strategy to buy up security integrator firms around the country and grow their footprint.

In addition to the Red Hawk acquisition, announced in mid-October, ADT has acquired more than a half-dozen security system integration firms in the last year or so.

Here’s a quick rundown of integrator companies acquired by ADT:

● Protec, a Pacific Northwest commercial integrator (Aug. 2017)

● MSE Security, the USA’s 27th largest commercial integrator (Sept 2017)

● Gaston Security, founded in 1994 as a video surveillance integration company and whose services have since expanded to include intrusion, access control, and perimeter protection (Oct. 2017)

Huawei Exec's Arrest Just The Beginning, Attys Say
"You wouldn't go after the CFO of a company & not go after the company itself"
The revelation this week that a high-level Huawei Technologies executive was arrested in Canada on U.S. charges was a bold move that likely bodes a major enforcement action against the Chinese telecommunications juggernaut, trade sanctions attorneys said.

Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested over the weekend on unspecified charges brought by federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York. The company itself has been under scrutiny for suspected sanctions violations, particularly after fellow telecom manufacturer ZTE Corp. has drawn similar attention. If Huawei's CFO has been charged with sanctions violations, attorneys say it would make for a highly unusual case.

The U.S. does charge individuals over export sanctions, but it's "extraordinary" for the foreign executive of a Fortune 500 company to land among them, said Foley & Lardner LLP partner Gregory Husisian. He said Huawei itself is likely to face enforcement action sooner or later, given Meng's place in the C-suite.

"You wouldn't go after the CFO of the company and not go after the company itself. It is going to be part of something much bigger," Husisian said. law360.com

What is corporate espionage? Inside the murky world of private spying
Companies gather intelligence on their rivals just like nation-states do. Sometimes it's legal, but industrial espionage can easily slip over the line into criminality.

Corporate espionage — sometimes also called industrial espionage, economic espionage or corporate spying — is the practice of using espionage techniques for commercial or financial purposes. We usually think of "espionage" in terms of spies working on behalf of one government trying to get information about another. But in fact, many of the same techniques — and even many of the same spies — work in both realms.

LegalMatch outlines a number of techniques that fall under the umbrella of industrial espionage:

● Trespassing onto a competitor's property or accessing their files without permission
● Posing as a competitor's employee in order to learn company trade secrets or other confidential information
● Wiretapping a competitor
● Hacking into a competitor's computers
● Attacking a competitor's website with malware

But not all corporate espionage is so dramatic. Much of it can take the simple form of an insider transferring trade secrets from one company to another — a disgruntled employee, for instance, or an employee who has been hired away by a competitor and takes information with them that they shouldn't. csoonline.com

How Sham Tricks Sam: Methods of Concealing Counterfeit in America
In 2015, criminals smuggled into the United States counterfeit and pirated goods worth between $58 billion and $118 billion, according to a report update by the Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property. A full 87 percent of counterfeit goods seized in the United States come from one country - China, according to the report.

The report says that China now produces more goods in general than the U.S. and is still the world’s principal IP (intellectual property) infringer.

According to the report, China is committed to policies that include reaping foreign technology and information, and these policies that have contributed to greater IP theft.

Methods to Avoid Detection

Detective James Ricaurte talked about some of the sneaky methods counterfeiters currently use. For example, counterfeiters often set up businesses that sell generic products to insulate themselves from police.

“So everybody’s seen the generic handbag stores along Broadway in the 30s [30-40 streets] where you walk by a store and you have all these pocketbooks that are similar to that of a brand name or color scheme, so you’ve got to think to yourself, ‘How many bags do they have to sell, and how popular are those bags, to justify how many containers of shipments of those type of bags coming in?’” Ricaurte said.

He said those generic bags are used when someone goes into a store and asks for a name brand handbag. The counterfeit seller then take the brand label and attaches it to the generic handbag.

“And it now becomes a brand name counterfeit,” he said.

Ricaurte said it takes about seven seconds for that seller to take a label from a secret hiding spot, place it onto the bag, then sell it to you for $75 versus $20 or $25 without the label. theepochtimes.com

Retailers push for 24/7 pay system
A group of companies - including Walmart and Target - are asking the Federal Reserve to help them get paid faster. The companies want the Fed to create a 24/7 system for interbank transfers that would eliminate the dayslong delay between debit cards being swiped and when businesses receive the funds. Card networks — like Visa and Mastercard — and debit card-issuing banks could take a hit if such a payment system took off, however. The Fed announced in October that it was seeking feedback on such a system. wsj.com

NRF: Retail jobs grew 18,600 in November
Accounted for 12% of nationwide job growth
Retail industry employment in November increased by 18,600 jobs seasonally adjusted from October, accounting for 12 percent of the 155,000-job increase reported by the Labor Department for the economy overall, the National Retail Federation said today. Year-over-year, retail employment was down by 16,300 jobs unadjusted as a tight labor market made it difficult to fill positions. nrf.com

Target Inks $7.4M Deal Over Calif. Waste Disposal Claims
Target Corp. on Wednesday agreed to shell out $7.4 million to resolve claims that the retail giant violated California state law by improperly dumping hazardous waste, some of which allegedly included customers' confidential medical information, piling on to an earlier $22.5 million deal over similar claims in 2011.

Wednesday’s agreement calls for Target to pay $3.2 million in civil penalties, spend at least $3 million on annual inspections and audits of its facilities, pay $900,000 in attorneys' fees and give $300,000 to other environmental projects in California, according to the judgment filed Wednesday. law360.com

Six Detroit-area doctors charged in $500M opioid fraud scheme
Six doctors were charged in an unsealed indictment Thursday with cheating Medicare and Medicaid out of almost $500 million and fueling the nation's opioid epidemic by illegally prescribing more than 13 million doses of prescription pain medication. The dollars and drugs involved make the alleged health care fraud conspiracy one of the largest in Michigan history, and one of the largest nationwide. detroitnews.com

Email Spam Campaign Targets U.S. Retail, Restaurant Sectors
Hackers using personalized attachments, company logos
A cybercriminal group has launched a malware campaign via personalized spear-phishing emails against large retail, restaurant and grocery chains in the United States, as well as against other organizations from the food and beverage industries.

The spam campaigns, which distributed several Trojans including Remote Manipulator System (RMS) and FlawedAmmyy, were attributed by researchers from Proofpoint to a known group tracked as TA505. This group has been responsible for the largest Dridex and Locky ransomware campaigns over the past two years and is generally known for sending large volumes of spam indiscriminately to victims.

However, these latest campaigns against the retail industry, which started around Nov. 15, were marked by a change in tactics.

“Each intended target received a personalized attachment, a technique that TA505 has not previously used and that remains unusual at this scale,” the Proofpoint researchers said in their report.

The emails were crafted to appear as if they were sent from a Ricoh printer and contain a scanned document. The attached documents were unique for every targeted company and even contained each company’s logo.

The documents contained malicious macros and instructed victims to enable their execution. If this was allowed, the code downloaded and executed a .msi file that installed the Trojan. securityboulevard.com

Jamil Farshchi of Equifax named 'CISO of the Year' by CIO Dive
Former CISO at Home Depot - Brought on after 2014 data breach
When a breach occurs, a CISO is not solely to blame, though sometimes new leadership is in order. Following a breach that affected more than 148 million consumers, Equifax brought on Farshchi to transform its companywide security.

In most industries, a smudge on a resume acts against a candidate. For a CISO, breach experience can be critical, said Sam Olyaei, principal research analyst at Gartner, in an interview with CIO Dive.

Farshchi earned considerable credibility as Home Depot's first CISO, brought on after the home improvement company suffered a data breach that exposed 50 million customers' personal data in 2014.

Credentials: After helping Home Depot recover from its 2014 security breach, Farshchi was brought on at Equifax to improve security after the notorious breach of 2017.

Leadership Style: Farshchi has been commended by colleagues as a humble and supportive leader invested in building up the people around him.

Outlook: Equifax is still shouldering breach-related costs and improving security. Breach recovery is a years-long process, and security must be practiced every day, so Farshchi is just getting started at Equifax. ciodive.com

Apple cybersecurity expert moves to ACLU as 'public interest tech' builds
A senior Apple Inc security expert left for a much lower-paying job at the American Civil Liberties Union this week, the latest sign of increasing activity on policy issues by Silicon Valley privacy specialists and other engineers.

Jon Callas, who led a team of hackers breaking into pre-release Apple products to test their security, started Monday in a two-year role as technology fellow at the ACLU. Prior to his latest stint at Apple, Callas designed an encryption system to protect data on Macs and co-founded communications companies Silent Circle, Blackphone and PGP Corp. reuters.com

Supermarket giant makes digital experiences more secure
Albertsons Cos.’ new identity platform is securing online customer data, a move that will enhance the grocer’s digital experience, and drive loyalty.

To ensure it could protect the digital information among the more than 30 million customers it serves each week, the supermarket giant implemented the Identity Cloud platform from identity software provider Okta. Serving as the first step of online interaction between Albertsons and its customers, the platform will power user registration and authentication for Albertsons’ website and mobile app. chainstoreage.com

Moldovan Sentenced in U.S. for Distributing Multifunction Malware Package
Andrey Ghinkul, aka Andrei Ghincul, aka Smilex, 31, of Moldova has been sentenced in federal court to time served on his conviction of conspiracy and damaging a computer. According to information presented to the court, the defendant was part of a criminal conspiracy that disseminated the Bugat malware, used malware to steal banking credentials, and then used the stolen credentials to initiate fraudulent electronic funds transfers of millions of dollars from the victims’ bank accounts. justice.gov

Data: The newest holiday fraud threats
The first wave of data from this year's holiday shopping season is in, providing insights into where the biggest fraud threats are likely to originate in the final weeks of the year.

Phishing scams are on the rise globally, and authorities worldwide have reported a surge in spoof websites and other tactics designed to trick consumers into sharing payment card data to get steep discounts on brand-name goods.

The newest areas of concern surround higher-than-average ticket size for suspicious transactions, P2P scams and a lower consumer caution around online and in-store shopping. This is particularly risky given the rise of mobile commerce, which is driving fraudsters to target the mobile channel and the large sector of millennials who are expected to drive the biggest increase in spending this year, with a disproportionate number using mobile devices.

The ticket size of all transactions during the first week of this year's holiday shopping season was up sharply over the average, Threatmetrix said. But so were the sizes of suspicious transactions merchants rejected. The average total value of rejected transactions during the first few days of this year's shopping season was 2.7 times higher than the value of good transactions. "Fraudsters are capitalizing on the busier holiday period to attempt to hide larger-value fraudulent transactions," the report said.

Mobile and e-commerce sales are surging, but brick-and-mortar stores still account for the vast majority of sales. Yet consumer data indicates consumers are equally at risk for identity theft when shopping online or in stores.

Eight percent of U.S. consumers said they have been victimized by identity theft in the past during the holidays, according to a recent survey Experian conducted. Among those victims, the incidents happened both when they were shopping online and in stores. More than a quarter, or 27 percent of respondents said their identity was stolen when shopping online during the holidays, and the same amount, 27 percent, said they were victimized using a credit card at a retail store, Experian said. Oakland, CA: $60,000 Apple store Robbery Suspect placed on 3 years probation; had priors for firearms and burglary
A two-time felon who was one of the 17 people who was charged for a robbery scheme earlier this year that targeted Apple retail stores across the state that resulted in the loss of more than $1 million was placed on probation and set free today. Joshua Cole, 19, pleaded guilty on Oct. 22 to felony conspiracy and felony second-degree commercial robbery for his role in a robbery at the Apple store at 5640 Bay St. in Emeryville on Sept. 25 in which about $60,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.

At a brief hearing today, Alameda County Superior Court Judge James Cramer gave Cole credit for the time he's already served in custody and placed him on three years' probation. Cole previously was convicted on March 23 of carrying a concealed firearm and on April 10, 2017, of second-degree burglary. Cole was one of 10 suspects who were charged in connection with the robbery at the Apple store in Emeryville on Sept. 25. Six of the 10 suspects are still in custody. Two defendants in the case are scheduled to be sentenced next week. sfgate.com

Post Falls, ID: $40K worth of cell phones stolen from Walmart
Two suspects stole $40,000 worth of cell phones from the Post Falls Walmart on Sunday, according to a Post Falls police report. The store’s asset protection officer gave the police officer a packet of paperwork that included information about the stolen items, a written statement of what happened, pictures of the suspects and a CD of the surveillance video, the report said. The store employee told the officer two men used crow bars to break into the phone lock-up in the electronics section of the store around 10:30 p.m. on December 1, after the store was closed. The report said the suspects stole 41 iPhones and two Galaxy Notes. krem.com

Tazewell County, VA: Police looking for suspects who stole thousands of dollars in merchandise from area Walmart stores
Investigators with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office asked the public Thursday to watch for a male and female team suspected of shoplifting from Walmart stores in Grundy, Pounding Mill, other parts of Virginia and as far away as North Carolina. The couple enter these stores and the male suspect has a magnetic alpha key that is needed to open the keeper boxes, according to the sheriff's office. Once the male removes an item from the keeper box, the female conceals it inside of her pink bag. They are generally in and out of a store in less than five to seven minutes. bdtonline.com

Las Cruces, NM: Woman arrested for shoplifting more than $800 in merchandise from Kohl's
Tera Suzann Harris, 41, of Las Cruces, is charged with one count of shoplifting over $500 but not more than $2,500. According to the police report, police learned from the store's loss prevention team that Harris attempted to walk out of the department store with a cart full of unpaid miscellaneous items. The store's loss prevention officer told police that Harris had put on a piece of their clothing, a top, and the tag was sticking out of the back of her neck. lcsun-news.com

After the interview, he started checking out the Nike display to look for shoes without a security tag. Once he found them, he left the store and got a Kohl's bag from a previous shopping trip. He then returned to the store, stalled a bit and left with the shoes, a pair of Nike Air Bella TR shoes, valued at $80, and a pair of women's Nike Elite TR shoes, valued at $70. Breedlove was arrested on his way to the car. He later told deputies he planned to gift the shoes to his mother. wfla.com

Jefferson County, AL: Dollar General employee charged with theft after robbery hoax
A Jefferson County woman claiming to be a victim ended up being the suspect. She said she was robbed while making a company deposit, but that wasn't the truth. And detectives say the lie she told could have hurt you. Megan Michael , 19, told officers she volunteered to drop off a bank deposit for the store. While she was walking to her car she says she was approached by a man with a knife. He demanded the money. She says she put up a fight, but he got the money and got away. Michael says a second man was waiting in a nearby car and he had a gun. Monday, store managers reported Michael admitted she lied and pocketed the money. al.com

Putnam, CT: Employee stole more than $12,500 from Putnam Running store
A woman in Putnam has been charged after allegedly stealing thousands from the store that she worked at. New York, NY: Nearly $1.7 million worth of counterfeit Nike sneakers seized
Authorities have seized over 9,000 pairs of fake Nike sneakers. US Customs and Border Protection officials say officers found the sneakers in September and completed the seizure last Thursday. The shipment had arrived to the Port of New York and Newark from China, and were on their way to California. Police were called to the store when an employee saw a woman stealing a bag while leaving the store. Officers arrested 27-year-old Alyssa Zebrasky and found a hypodermic needle and baggies containing what Zabrasky admitted were methamphetamine and a Suboxone pill. wfmynews2.com

DeKalb County, GA: Chinese restaurant employee charged with shooting customer who walked out without paying
According to DeKalb County Police, the customer tried to walk out of the China Café without paying for his meal. Police said one employee followed the man to confront him about it, but was assaulted by the customer. Other employees of the business tried to jump in to help, but were also attacked in the process. That's when police said 34-year-old Xin Xing Chen went back inside the store, grabbed a gun and shot the customer, leaving him in critical condition. Police said Chen also shot a fellow employee by mistake, but that person is stable. Authorities charged Chen with aggravated assault for his role in the shooting. 11alive.com
