ORC Leader Gabe Esposito
Building Relationships is Key to Fighting ORC

Gabe Esposito, Director of Corporate Security for Verizon, is responsible for security and asset protection, including retail loss prevention for the company's 1,600+ communications stores and kiosks throughout the United States. He also leads the Verizon's domestic investigations teams for all business units, public safety outreach program, special events security, and provides expertise in the areas of crisis management, risk assessment, business continuity and compliance.

Esposito began his wireless career at Bell Atlantic Mobile. He managed regional business compliance, security and fraud teams in HQ and the Philadelphia and Greenville, SC areas before assuming his current responsibilities at Verizon.

Under his leadership, Verizon established a corporate-wide Loss Prevention program, a business continuity and disaster recovery program for its wireless business unit, a cross-functional crisis management plan, and implemented various training and awareness programs to support the company's commitment to compliance, privacy, employee and retail customers' safety, and security.

Esposito is a co-chair of the National Retail Federation's Organized Retail Crime/Investigators Network and a member of the NRF's Loss Prevention Council. He is a certified business continuity professional and a certified fraud examiner. He is also a member of DRI International, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS). He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and an MBA.

Prior to joining the private sector, Esposito worked in law enforcement, which in part fuels his passion for developing and maintaining strong relationships with public safety partners. According to Esposito, it is through building and maintaining strong relationships with LP professionals, law enforcement, academia, and industry partners that the fight against organized retail crime can be won.

He adds, while some ORC perpetrators focus on a particular industry, most ORC groups define no boundaries and move from industry to industry perpetrating their fraud and theft. The sophistication of today's ORC groups requires a highly organized and coordinated response from law enforcement and industry partners. It also requires a cross-functional investigative approach by the impacted company including LP, Corporate Security, cyber security, operations and others; a philosophy he has espoused and promoted throughout his career.

Industry and public safety organizations serve as a force multiplier in the fight against ORC and other crimes affecting private industry, and he encourages everyone to join their local ORCAs and to become members of the NRF's ORC/Investigators Network. The ORC/Investigators Network serves as a place through which trends can be more quickly identified and mitigated on a regional basis, and nationally, and is a forum for sharing best practices and solutions to common challenges among LP professionals, law enforcement and academia.

The NRF ORC Effort: Trends - Value - Get Involved

In this roundtable discussion, the two Co-Chairs of the NRF's ORC/Investigators' Network Committee, Jon Shimp (Louis Vuitton) and Gabe Esposito (Verizon), talk about the NRF's ongoing ORC efforts and the challenges and trends they're seeing on a national level. And two of their team members, Robert Ruiz (Louis Vuitton) and Chris Baker (Verizon), share some of the recent developments for ORCA's on a regional level.

The New Rules of Consumer Privacy
by FaceFirst CEO Peter Trepp

What does it take for companies to survive in today's fast-changing landscape? The secret: balancing consumers' often competing desire for privacy, security and convenience.

That's no easy task. Technological innovations have now made it possible to keep consumers safer than ever before, while offering brands never-imagined insight into consumer behavior. And yet, data breaches and privacy scandals undermine consumer confidence on a daily basis.

It's time for a new model. In The New Rules of Consumer Privacy: Building Loyalty with Connected Consumers in the Age of Face Recognition and AI, FaceFirst CEO and author Peter Trepp has devised a set of rules that will help companies uphold consumers' privacy without sacrificing their security and convenience. By following these rules, brands can create a win-win scenario that will maximize revenue, reduce crime, provide consumers with the best experience possible and ensure that consumers' privacy is reasonably protected.

Included in The New Rules of Consumer Privacy:

  ● The Five Privacy Principles every company must follow
  ● The new rules of responsible data handling, according to leading academics and visionaries

Death toll in California wildfire rises to 42, marking worst in state history

Calif. wildfires destroy outlets of several major restaurant brands
Fires in California raged on Monday leaving devastated communities in their path, as they destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses including locations of several quick-service chains in Northern California.

As of Monday, the Woolsey fire near the posh community of Malibu, Calif., had scorched 91,572 acres and was only 20 percent contained, according to state authorities. Two people were killed in the blaze, officials said. The fire has destroyed an estimated 370 structures. An additional 57,000 structures are threatened by the fire, which started last week.

In Northern California, the Camp fire has burned 113,000 acres over four days and destroyed 6,453 homes and 260 commercial buildings, state authorities reported. Twenty-nine fatalities were confirmed as of Monday. Much of the destruction has occurred in Paradise, a small community of 26,000 residents nestled in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada mountains. The fire, which is only 25 percent contained, barreled its way through the town incinerating hospitals, elementary schools, grocery stores and restaurants.

A KFC, a Burger King, a Jack in the Box and a McDonald's were gobbled up by flames in Paradise leaving nothing but rubble, according to details confirmed by Nation's Restaurant News, as well information cited in various Bay Area news sites.

How Resilience and Innovation Saved the Day at Gap Inc.
Following 2016 Fishkill, NY Distribution Center Fire

It's November, which means the holiday season is right around the corner. For most retailers, gearing up for peak is a matter of getting the right inventory in the right locations and hiring enough people to get the projected orders out the door.

Those tasks are daunting enough. But, how do you recover when a facility you were counting on for the upcoming season catches fire roughly nine weeks before the first of November?

That's a question Kevin Kuntz, senior vice president of global logistics fulfillment for Gap Inc., and his team confronted on the morning of Aug. 30, 2016. The night before, a fire tore through a 1-million-plus-square-foot distribution center in Fishkill, N.Y. The fire destroyed about $100 million worth of equipment and inventory, and while all employees continued to be paid, hundreds were impacted. What's more, it took an important order fulfillment asset offline right before peak - a little like losing the starting quarterback on the eve of the Super Bowl. Punting isn't an option. mmh.com

Walmart Says Flipkart CEO Out After Misconduct Allegations Probe
Walmart Acquired the Indian E-Commerce Company for $16 Billion in May

Walmart said on Tuesday that the co-founder and CEO of Indian e-commerce leader Flipkart Group has stepped down in the wake of allegations of "serious personal misconduct," creating tumult at a company it recently paid $16 billion for to get a leg up in one of the most promising e-commerce markets in the world.

Binny Bansal, 37, resigned immediately after an independent probe into the unspecified allegations that he "strongly" denies, Walmart Inc said in a statement, adding that his wanting response to the accusations was behind his departure.

"While the investigation did not find evidence to corroborate the complainant's assertions against Binny, it did reveal other lapses in judgment," Walmart said in the statement. It did not detail those lapses. fortune.com

Macy's Radical Plan to Save Itself: Shrink
Macy's Inc., the iconic department store, has started a radical experiment aimed at revival. It is shrinking. Build-A-Bear tries 'Pay Your Age' promo again - This time in Australia
Build-A-Bear, some might say, had a good problem with the Pay Your Age Day promotion debacle that caused chaotic conditions last July. Due to overwhelming demand, the retailer was forced to close down stores for the day, but the incident reportedly resulted in over 2.9 billion social media impressions. One might think the brand learned its lesson - and perhaps it has. Build-A-Bear Workshop Australia, the largest franchisee in the country, is holding a similar event on November 15th at 28 stores. In a press statement, the chain promised "important updates to help ensure the best possible experience for as many guests as possible." retailwire.com

How Neiman Marcus Safeguards Purchases When Sales Surge
Shamoun Siddiqui, VP & CISO, Neiman Marcus, on Using AI for Cybersecurity

Cybercriminals tend to ramp up their attacks against retailers around the holiday season, when revenues are highest and opportunity is ripe. Half of all surveyed retailers in a recent report said they had been victims of cyberattacks - a more than 100 percent increase from the year before.

Fraudsters are not just increasing the frequency of their attacks against retailers, they're also getting smarter and changing how and when they attack retailers in order to cause the most damage and reap maximum rewards, according to Shamoun Siddiqui, vice president and chief information security officer at Neiman Marcus.

The Changing Face of Omnichannel Fraud

As the amount of transactions made online increases, many cybercriminals have been targeting those shopping channels. Gift cards have also become an appealing target for fraudsters in recent months, Siddiqui said, noting that botnet attacks are especially common in these incidents.

"Hackers and fraudsters have been relentless in the past year or two, attacking retail websites, scraping gift cards and probing accounts for weak passwords," he explained. "We have seen a significant amount of botnet activity against our online portals, primarily targeting our gift card systems."

Combatting Card-Not-Present Fraud

As cybercriminals adopt more sophisticated attack techniques, retailers like Neiman Marcus must implement new methods to safeguard transactions. Siddiqui and his team have made significant efforts to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems, which detect suspicious behaviors or transactions and curb the number of successful cybercrimes.

"Whether the data resides in a traditional data center or in a public cloud, layered controls have been implemented to protect the confidentiality and integrity of that data," he said. "We are also investing in artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies across a wide spectrum of areas. This includes fraud management, whereby AI and ML are being used to determine patterns of fraudulent transactions that may otherwise be invisible to the naked eye."

Neiman Marcus is investing in more than just AI and ML: it has implemented protections such as identity and access management, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, malware protections and advanced threat monitoring and logging systems. pymnts.com

Credit Card Chips Fail to Halt Fraud, Survey Says
New chip-enabled credit cards, which were rolled out to U.S. consumers starting in 2015, were supposed to put an end to rampant credit card fraud. So much for that.

A new report from the research firm Gemini Advisory has found that, of more than 60 million cases of credit card theft in the last 12 months, a whopping 93% of the stolen cards had the new chip technology.

This represents a major setback for the technology, known as the EMV standard, which is named after the companies (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) that created it.

"45.8 million...records [were] likely compromised through card-sniffing and point-of-sale (POS) breaches of businesses such as Saks, Lord & Taylor, Jason's Deli, Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, Forever 21, and Whole Foods. To break it down even further, 90% or 41.6 million of those records were EMV chip-enabled," states the report. fortune.com

Cyberattacks Top Business Risks in North America, Europe, EAP
A new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) shows cyberattacks are the business risk of greatest concern in North America, Europe, and East Asia and Pacific (EAP) regions.

In the United States and Canada, the growth of concern around cyberattacks mirrors the pattern in similar economically advanced regions. Researchers point out how greater reliance on e-commerce also poses a risk here. Data fraud or theft was another primary concern in North America, ranking third and seventh, respectively, on businesses' list of top worries. darkreading.com

Cyber criminals abuse US Postal Service Informed Delivery for ID theft
The U.S. Secret Service issued an internal alert to law enforcement partners about identity thieves abusing the U.S. Postal Service's Informed Delivery, a service that allows you to digitally preview your mail and manage package delivery. ID thieves have been using the Informed Delivery service "to identify and intercept mail, and to further their identity theft fraud schemes." csoonline.com

What's My Motivation?
8 Tips to Manage Your Fraud Team During the Hectic Holidays

Last year, e-commerce fraud spiked by around 22 percent during the holiday season. This period sees dramatic changes in the amount and types of fraud businesses encounter, from credit card testing and promo abuse to friendly fraud chargebacks and email tumbling.

So, what does that mean for fraud teams? 'Tis the season to motivate everyone to get through the holiday rush. Here are some tips to make sure they're in shape to face the madness head-on.

1) Set the stage with your team. Be honest with them-let them know upfront that this time of year is going to be stressful. But, remind them that they're responsible for delighting and keeping your customers safe. Rally the troops!

2) Give them the tools to experiment and strategize. Ask your cross-functional partners about launches coming down the pipeline so you can adjust for future changes in customer behavior. And, partner with product or engineering teams to stress-test your rules or machine learning systems by running simulations. That ensures your team is optimally equipped for the additional volume.

3) Arm yourself with information. Ask your product or finance teams if they have a forecast for fraud and order volumes based on data from previous years. Using that forecast, your team can figure out scheduling and hiring needs.

4) Once you have that data, start planning. Figure out how much revenue you're going to have to do and how many people you'll need. Remember, many of your fraud analysts will want to take time off for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year. Ask them to rank their preferences for time off on each holiday. Once that's done, you can start figuring out whether you need to hire contractors to deal with fraud surrounding each holiday.

5) Be smart with your contractors. Leave enough time to train them so they're equipped to deal with the fraud rush. Consider letting them handle more "lightweight" functions like customer service, or having them work on lower-risk orders. To soften the potential impact of fraud on your bottom line, let your more seasoned fraud analysts handle more high-risk transactions.

6) Cross-train your customer support team. If needed, they can help out with lower-risk transactions. Like your contractors, make sure you're giving them enough time to train and ramp up.

7) Document everything. Make sure you have a playbook to train new employees and contractors to make their onboarding experience as efficient as possible. Instruct your team on keeping detailed records on each transaction so you're ready to fight potential chargebacks.

8) Empathy is key. The holiday season can by hard for your employees. It's important to keep up their morale so they keep giving 110 percent. Consider letting your employees work from home, especially if they're working overtime. And more importantly, take the time to recognize their hard work and celebrate their wins! cnpexpo.com

Thoughts Of Holiday Retail Cheer Tempered By Memories Of Failure
The seeds of so many holiday season mishaps - web hiccups, shipping chaos, inventory gaps - have already been planted, and will respond in the right conditions (say, an unexpected surge in web traffic combined with sub-par hosting, or a winter storm for which adequate logistical preparations were not made).

That's not to suck any cheerful anticipation out of the 2018 holiday shopping season, during which U.S. consumers are expected to spend at least $1 trillion, with eCommerce set for a 14.8 percent year-over-year increase, to $124.1 billion. Put the finishing touches on those late-year marketing plans. Do that supply chain triple check. Select those gourmet snacks for the company holiday party and, by all means, let your mind drift for a few minutes to how you might spend any bonus or raise you will earn for your Q4 triumphs.

Just don't forget everything that can go wrong. And let these bad memories of holidays past guide you in the coming weeks to ensure that your retail and payments machine is running in top condition. pymnts.com

Update: Bridgeport store owner's millions came from check-cashing courtesy
McCloy's Store in Bridgeport opened for business on Friday, but the tiny grocery that supposedly racked up millions of dollars in profits in recent years was in dire need of restocking. Police this week charged owner Melvin "Beanie" McCloy, 60, with running a corrupt organization, dealing in proceeds of unlawful activities, receiving stolen property and fraudulently trafficking in food orders for allegedly selling stolen groceries over the past three years. A forensic analysis of McCloy's business records showed that in 2016 he "deposited $3.9 million into his business account," investigators reported. "In the year of 2017 up to July, he deposited $1.7 million."

McCloy was happy to make small talk Friday, including about hunting. He referred comment about the charges, however, to attorney Francis Murrman of Greensburg. Most of the deposits originated through McCloy's practice of cashing checks for store patrons, Murrman said. "He did this as a courtesy to his clients," Murrman said. "Most (stores) don't do it because of the huge inconvenience - who wants to take 30 checks a day to the bank and cash them? Being way out in Bridgeport and not having a lot to entice people to your store instead of Giant Eagle and Shop'n Save, it was something he did to help bring people in the door."

Fayette County detectives and state police in Greensburg started investigating McCloy in May 2015 after area police departments responded to numerous retail thefts from various Walmarts and Shop'n Save, Giant Eagle and County Market stores, among other places in Fayette and Westmoreland counties, according to state police and court documents. Stolen items included soda, energy drinks, coffee and laundry detergent.  triblive.com

After a nearly 24-hour search, an "armed and dangerous" suspect has been arrested in Rochester, New Hampshire. Skimming Thefts

Nearly 80% of Arizona Credit Card Skimmers Found at Circle K Locations
By the time Dan Drake discovered the fraudulent purchases on his credit card en route to visiting his son in California recently, criminals had already plundered $1,500. Drake, a former U.S. prosecutor who spent years going after credit-card scammers in court, had been scammed himself. Circle K is now the most popular gas station chain in the state for fraudsters to install card skimmers at fuel pumps, an Arizona Republic analysis of data from the Arizona Division of Weights and Measures shows.

So far in 2018, 77 percent of skimmers found at Arizona gas stations were at Circle K locations, even though the brand makes up only about 30 percent of gas stations around the state, according to data obtained under Arizona public records law. Other brands such as Shell and Chevron have experienced drops in the number of skimmers found at their sites in the past five years, the records show. But Circle K's total has risen from one skimmer found in mid-2013 to 85 so far this year. azcentral.com
