40 LP/AP Executives Filled Q1 2018's Senior Positions
15 LP/AP New Pyramid Heads & 25 New Senior Support Leaders Named in Q1

Sally Beauty, Penske, and Michaels being the only three to name new Vice Presidents.

CKE Restaurants, Restoration Hardware, HD Supply, Brooks Brothers, Kate Spade, The Walking Company, Lucky's Market, Village Super Markets, The Fresh Market, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, and MadRag/10 Spot naming or promoting new LP/AP leaders.

Obviously Sally Beauty was the biggest job filled in Q1 with Michaels following close behind. While Penske promoted their senior LP executive to Vice President.

The biggest HR developments in Q1 were obviously Staples and REI eliminating their senior LP roles and the massive Macy's AP reorganization reported on in two articles and actually went further then initially reported. Certainly 7-Eleven cutting 14 AP positions and Bloomingdales cutting 20% of their LP payroll were noteworthy. However given the overall retail industry cuts, which some have quoted at being 60% higher than last year, these cuts just aren't as alarming as they once would have been.

Not surprisingly new senior appointments were down in Q1 from 2017's strong out-of-the-gate Q1 shotgun start.

Where 62 LP/AP executives were named in new roles. Thirty-six of which were named pyramid heads and twenty-six named to senior support roles, with 11 or 30.5% obtaining officer level titles of vice presidencies. Which, when compared to this years three new vice presidencies, shows a 72% decline in the actual number of executives named vice presidents in Q1 versus Q1 2017.

Last year's Q1 LP/AP jobs market was an unusually strong one, being up 28.5% over 2016's Q1. But this sharp decline go well beyond typical variances and reflect the shrinking market and super tight budgets, especially when you look at the 72% decrease in organizations willing to reward leaders with a vice presidents role and associated benefits.

Looking at it from another prospective, for the last four years approximately 30% of all new appointments in Q1 were named vice presidents, which fits from a timing prospective with company's reviewing and rewarding the top executives. However this year that number as well declined to only 7.5% of new senior appointments reached the vice president level. A 75% reduction in the norm for those executives being named vice presidents.

All in all not a favorable LP/AP jobs report to start 2018.

Stores use artificial intelligence to catch shoplifters

Some grocery stores in Rhode Island and Massachusetts are using artificial intelligence to catch shoplifters

The technology, called Stoplift, analyzes security video to automatically detect theft or errors at the checkout, according to Malay Kundu, the creator of Stoplift. "It can actually tell what you've handled versus what you've rung up," Kundu said.

The Cambridge businessman used to develop real-time facial recognition systems to look for terrorists in airports. He realized similar technology could be used at the checkout to tackle a $13 billion per-year problem for grocery stores in the United States.

Though preventing shoplifting is the primary function, Stoplift can also reduce the time law-abiding customers spend in line, according to Kundu.

"The same technology that we're using for identifying fraudulent behavior at a self-checkout turns out to be equally good at  identifying legitimate behavior," he said.

Kundu said Stoplift reduces false alerts at the self checkout by as much as 90 percent.

When asked if Stoplift blurs any privacy lines, Kundu said Stoplift is no different than a surveillance camera.

In the future, customers may not have to go through the checkout. Kundu said his company is working on technology that would track the groceries consumers put in their carts and automatically charge them when they leave the store. wwlp.com

We didn’t realize it as it happened, but years ago, we entered a new era — we simply haven’t named it yet. We now live in an inescapable era of surveillance commerce. This era has been made possible by three converging trends: Rapid advances in mobile technology and location tracking, the dominance of ad networks tracking consumers across any digital device and shopping channel and the ubiquitous, inescapable algorithms governing almost every aspect of daily commerce.

And that’s to say nothing of what AI might soon unleash. We’ve witnessed the almost wholesale reordering of economic and commercial life, and anything this far-reaching unlikely leads to unintended consequences. What’s clear is as both citizens and consumers, we have not yet fully grasped what it all means.

91% of adults agree or strongly agree that consumers have lost control of how personal information is collected and used by companies.  

Despite all that has happened, the option to opt-out is no longer an option. Yet the reluctant acceptance of the "privacy is dead" mantra by shoppers may not be a viable, long-term state of affairs. It’s time for brands to listen better to consumer misgivings. After nearly two decades of citizen apathy and short-lived outrage over government and corporate overreach, we may have hit a tipping point.

UK's High Street crisis forces hundreds of store closures

Nearly 650 shops and restaurants, run by a handful of major chains, have shut since the start of 2018 or are at risk of closure.

Maplin and Toys R Us sites account for half that total, according to analysis by BBC 5 live's Wake Up to Money. The BBC's analysis shows that cities have borne the brunt of these retail insolvencies, but towns across the UK have also been affected. Many already have a high shop vacancy rate.

Bryan Roberts, a retail analyst at TCC Global, said some retail failures had been self-inflicted as firms failed to adapt to changing consumer behaviour.

"There are lots of nimble retailers out there. There've also been cost pressures like the minimum wage, and business rates - particularly those on the High Street." bbc.com

Home Store Closures Coming

“We estimate the industry is actually on pace for another year of closure square footage at historic peak levels (in line with 2017 levels),” the analysts said.

On a store unit basis, however, closures are expected to slow, down 59 per cent from last year, when they were at an all-time high.

This year they note a shift from so-called soft line retailers, which sell clothing and linen, to hardline stores that typically sell consumer electronics and home furnishings, and more closures at so-called bigger box stores.

Home store closings are accelerating as more share shifts online and their own online sales cannibalise store sales,” they note. Among those shuttering stores are Pier 1 Imports, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Williams-Sonoma, Michaels Companies, which is behind US crafts retailer Aaron Brothers. What does the future of in-store payments look like?
Most major retailers are adopting scan-and-go options, but just walk out technology, facial recognition and personalization are all likely to guide the future of in-store payments.

Four themes to consider from the customer standpoint: experience, personalization, ease and gratification. For Farfetch's store of the future, frictionless payments enabled by smartphones sits at the core of getting those four things right.

Frictionless payments in the store of the future aren't just for a luxury retailer store lab - they're an imperative for all of retail. And more executives can be seen committing to that future in the investments that nearly all major retailers are making in mobile scan-and-go and checkout-free programs.

Retailers have graduated from geofencing and beacons - two methods that have been largely unreliable -and are focusing their frictionless payment efforts on scan-and-go with a select few having moved on to more advanced concepts like just walk out technology.

But that's merely the tip of the iceberg.

The clear winner in scan-and-go is Apple - but Target, Walmart and Kohl's will all start to catch up, Gehani said. Generally, he added, it's the way that all big-box retailers want to go.

"A lot of conversation has been [about how] this will be a cost saving because of fewer cashiers," he said. "Retailers that will win are going to take labor savings and put that to other store labor, like ensuring security, [that the] shelves are full at all given times and helping customers on the floor."

Mobile checkout shouldn't spur a reduction in total store labor, but rather a shift toward other activities. And implementing such a program isn't to say that cashiers suddenly disappear. Retailers will win, not by removing associations, but by creating better ones, Gehani said. retaildive.com

5 Ways to Strengthen Your Anti-Harassment Complaint Process
No complaints doesn't mean no harassment. Here's how to build trust in your reporting procedures

Leaders at many organizations are taking a fresh look at their strategies for preventing and addressing sexual harassment in the wake of the #MeToo movement. As you revisit your policies, don’t forget to also fine-tune your complaint procedures. Without a robust process that employees can trust, an anti-harassment policy has little value. 

1. Make Clear Who Can Bring Complaints Complaint procedures should not be limited to employees who have experienced harassment. Workers who witness inappropriate conduct should be able to file grievances as well. 

2. Have Multiple Points of Contact If you want your complaint procedure to be effective, don’t require employees to report their concerns only to their supervisor. After all, a manager may be the person engaging in the conduct the worker is complaining about.

3. Detail What Constitutes Prohibited Conduct Flesh out what you mean by unacceptable harassment in the workplace. There are three key points you should make

Chapter Meeting Recap

The International Association of Interviewers (IAI) Midwest Chapter held its second meeting on Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 at Axis Communications in Chicago, IL. CFI’s, IAI members and guests gathered the day before IAI’s Elite Training Days to network and listen to multiple presentations. Chapter Chair, Tim Lapinski, CFI, LPC kicked off the meeting with a review of the Chapter’s purpose and goals, as well as, an introduction of board members and all attendees.

John Diederich, Sr. VP & COO of Rush Copley Medical Center, presented on the importance of active shooter training and preparation, as he went through a detailed personal account of his experience at the country music festival in Las Vegas, when the mass shooting occurred. John described in detail how having that training potentially saved his life, and the lives of many others.

The group then took a tour of Axis Communications’ facility, and was given insight into some of the new technologies Axis is engineering, and other industries they serve.

After reconvening, David Thompson, CFI, VP of Operations for W-Z, presented on “Back to Basics,” which covered the need to remember the foundation of the W-Z method and not skip the little things. It was a great refresher for anyone that no longer interviews on a regular basis, or has teams that do the majority of the interviewing.

Finally, Stephanie Hoover, CFI, Strategic Account Executive at CONTROLTEK USA, presented on navigating the Certified Interviewer website. This detailed where to find members, committees and resources, such as the rationalization matrix.

2012 Data Breach Still in the Courts Over Customer Harm
9th Circ. Denies Zappos Rehearing Of Data Breach Ruling

A Ninth Circuit panel on Friday denied Zappos.com’s bid for the court to reconsider its reversal of the company’s escape from consumer claims over a 2012 breach that affected 24 million shoppers, saying the customers had standing to sue when they filed their first complaint.

Zappos cited direct conflicts with four other appellate courts when challenging the panel’s March decision, which added to confusion over whether theft of consumer data is enough to establish Article III standing.

But the panel held true to its previous ruling Friday, rejecting Zappos’ bid and amending the decision to note that shoppers whose personal identity information is stolen suffer an increased risk of harm regardless of whether any have endured financial repercussions.

In the complaints, plaintiffs allege that the Zappos data breach places them at imminent risk of identity theft,” the panel wrote. law360.com

No business safe from cyber attack, says KPMG
Companies should be investing more time and energy in cyber protection and resilience than ever before in view of the constantly changing cyber crime threat, said Ferbrache. But he noted that many firms are suffering from “cyber fatigue” and focusing IT investment on a variety of emerging technologies, such as machine learning, at the expense of security.

Ferbrache said a “radical rethink” is required on the part of internal audit (IA), which generally focuses on mapping control networks as a way of preventing cyber crime.

The problem is that this does not always mirror how the crimes are committed,” he said. “It’s time for a different approach.”

He described cyber criminals as “rational businesspeople” looking for a return on their investment in the tactics and tools they use to steal, commit fraud and extort money. “One thing they do not do is think in is organizational silo structures – and so neither should the IA team,” said Ferbrache. computerweekly.com

Threat Actors Turn to Blockchain Infrastructure to Host & Hide Malicious Activity
In a troubling trend for enterprises and law enforcement, threat actors are ramping up their use of blockchain domains to hide malicious activity and improve their ability to withstand takedown efforts.

Security vendor FireEye says it has observed a recent uptick in interest in cryptocurrency infrastructure in the cyber underground. Over the last year, there has been a big surge in the number of threat actors that have begun incorporating support for blockchain domains in their malware tools. darkreading.com

Combatting the New Normal
According to reports, however, hackers claim they have 5 million credit and debit card numbers from Hudson Bay Company breach. Gemini Advisory has stated 125,000 cards have been released for sale so far and has estimated the theft of card numbers began as early as May 2017.

At this point, no one should be surprised. These events no longer cause the widespread panic and alarm they used to. Every few weeks, there is another revelation to the point where people are asking, “Is this the new normal?”

When you are in the middle of battling fraudulent activities day after day, it can feel like the criminals are always one step ahead and that this pattern really is the new normal.

Unfortunately, more leaks still appear, and there are plenty of new areas of concern. Can you say IoT?

So, what can be done now? The answer must be a holistic approach across all channels, supported by technology, good security processes, education and the power of data analytics utilization. This seems like an easy enough statement to make. But in practice, determining the right areas of focus and evaluating the accompanying costs are nowhere near as easy.

When you think about fraud across all channels, one of the weakest links today is authentication. You may have a great security process for your mobile banking experience, but what about your phone channel? It is estimated that one out of every 2,000 calls is a fraudster attempting to gather the additional information needed to authenticate and commit a scam. In every interaction, whether it is phone, web, mobile or in-person, you must think of the next generation of authentication tools that are emerging and continually look to invest in new technology that works across a wide range of channels.

Introducing more passive technologies into your channels, like biometrics and analytics, can help balance the need to prevent fraud with less friction for consumers. paymentsjournal.com

Amazon's 10,000 Lawyers Say Don't Force us to Fight Fakes
Alibaba is better at fighting fakes than Amazon is, says CEO of Swatch

Alibaba is "fighting actively" against fakes, but that isn't something Amazon is doing well, according to Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek.

"If I look what Alibaba is doing and all these they are trying to make a service to the consumer and to earn money. And they are fighting actively against fakes. This Amazon is not doing," he told CNBC's Geoff Cutmore.

"They refuse to enter into discussion because they have, I think, 10,000 of lawyers that say, 'Please, we at Amazon, we should not enter into anything that should force us to fight against fakes.' The Chinese are doing it. They fight against it," the CEO said.

CNBC reported in 2016 that Amazon had been facing a counterfeiting problem following the e-commerce giant's effort to openly court Chinese manufacturers. Critics said Amazon hadn't put the necessary checks in place to manage the influx of counterfeits.

In an email to CNBC, an Amazon spokesperson said the company invests "tremendous resources" into systems that protect customers from inauthentic goods.

But some corners of Alibaba's offerings have long been regarded as a haven for counterfeit products.
Its Taobao e-commerce platform was blacklisted by the U.S. Trade Representative for a second consecutive time this year for selling suspected fakes. That move drew protests from Alibaba, which said it did not reflect the company's intellectual property protection efforts. China's commerce ministry had responded with doubts over the "objectivity" of the annual U.S. blacklist.

Chinese politics doing 'the right things'

"The politics over there have done the right things, they create a middle class. That's what we need, a middle class that can really consume. And that's what's happening and continues."

How merchants quietly use Facebook to flood Amazon with fake reviews
A Washington Post examination found the majority of reviews on some popular products, such as Bluetooth headphones and speakers, appeared to violate Amazon’s policies, including a prohibition on paid reviews. Amazon and Facebook shut down groups and a merchant in response to Post inquiries.

On Amazon, customer comments can help a product surge in popularity. The online retail giant says that more than 99 percent of its reviews are legitimate because they are written by real shoppers who aren’t paid for them.

But a Washington Post examination found that for some popular product categories, such as bluetooth headphones and speakers, the vast majority of reviews appear to violate Amazon’s prohibition on paid reviews. They have certain characteristics, such as repetitive wording that people likely cut and paste in.

Tampa Man Gets 51 months prison for $143,532 Counterfeit CC's & Gift Card Reselling - Hitting Florida Retailers
He fraudulently used the CIBC account numbers to encode and emboss the credit cards that he then used to purchase goods, including cartons of cigarettes from the Tribal Smoke Shop, and gift cards from retail stores in Florida. Gloucester County, NJ: South Jersey Man Wanted In Retail Shoplifting Ring
Michael J. DiFelice, 45, of Camden, is wanted by the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office for violation of release conditions in connection with a shoplifting charge, resulting in issuance of a bench warrant on April 18. DiFelice was arrested as part of an alleged organized retail theft ring last year. He is accused of returning stolen merchandise to a Marshals store and pawning gift cards received for the returns. Dothan, AL: Two more arrested in connection with December Sun South theft; $150,000 in merchandise stolen
According to previous reports, thieves entered the Sun South dealership yard by cutting heavy-duty chains and locks. Roughly 10 commercial mowers were stolen, two heavy-duty utility trailers, one company truck and fuel. dothaneagle.com

Shelby, NC: Nearly 8,000 Oxycodone and Hydrocodone pills taken from pharmacy (value between $40,000 - $80,000)
Police first were notified on Sunday when a person walking by noticed the pharmacy had been broken into. When officers arrived, they found the front door of the pharmacy pried open and glass scattered across the ground. Inside, they found garbage strewn around and dozens of missing pill bottles. According to the owner, 3,871 doses of oxycodone and 3,468 doses of hydrocodone were missing. “Depending on the dosage of each pill, they could be worth $5 to $10 each,” police said. New Lenox, IL: Jewel-Osco Laundry Detergent Thief Caught
59-year-old man from Joliet remains locked up inside the Will County Adult Detention Facility on a $20,000 bail following a rare theft involving a bulk load of laundry detergent. Charles Jones was taken away in handcuffs from the Jewel store. "The officer learned that Jones stole approximately $275 worth of laundry detergent from the store." Jones was about to load the detergent into a vehicle when he was approached by employees. Jones took off and ran. But he did not get far. patch.com

Spartanburg, SC: Officer tases wanted man after foot chase through Walmart; multiple outstanding theft warrants
The officer said he approached Robbins and notified him that he was under arrest for multiple outstanding warrants. The report states Robbins then asked the officer if the officer knew who he was. Robbins then began pulling away and the officer said the suspect began running through the store. The officer gave chase and warned Robbins that he would tase him. The first attempt was unsuccessful but the officer said a second attempt to tase Robbins in the store’s garden center. Grand Prairie, TX: Armed SWAT teams rushed to IKEA after reports of gunfire near the entrance; Suspect killed after shootout with police
An armed man was killed during a confrontation with police near the Ikea in Grand Prairie on Monday afternoon. Authorities were called to the area for a welfare check just before 1:30 p.m. when a passer-by reported seeing a man slumped in his vehicle in the entrance to the store's parking lot off Mayfield Road. Officers approached the vehicle and noticed the man had pulled out a rifle, Grand Prairie police Chief Steve Dye said. They unholstered their guns and nonlethal weapons and started to negotiate with the man, who refused to put his hands in the air. The officers retreated and, fearing for their lives, opened fire, police said. The man pulled out the rifle two more times and fired at police, who returned fire, Dye said. A SWAT team was able to approach the vehicle a short time later, and officers found the man dead inside with an assault rifle and ammunition, police said. wfaa.com

Pittsburgh Police have arrested a suspected shoplifter who struck and injured an officer while trying to get away at the Market District Giant Eagle in Shadyside. Willard Hopkins, 63, was arrested around 11 a.m. at his residence in Carnegie. Hopkins will be charged with aggravated assault by vehicle, fleeing or attempting to elude, reckless driving, escape, accident involving death or personal injury and retail theft. wpxi.com

Aurora, IL: Woman charged in the Dragging of a Jewel-Osco Security Guard with her car
A 52-year-old woman was charged with dragging a security guard with her car after she was caught shoplifting at a grocery store earlier this year in west suburban Aurora. About 6:15 p.m. Feb. 19, the security guard, a 24-year-old woman, caught Lori R. Federman stealing meat and vitamins from the Jewel-Osco. according to Aurora police. When the guard confronted her, Federman ran to her car and the woman gave chase. After getting into the car, Federman grabbed the guard by her collar, pulled her partially into the car and drove off. Federman eventually let her go before speeding out of the parking lot. The guard was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said. nbcchicago.com

Los Angeles, CA: Trader Joe’s the target of several Robberies in recent months
Police say a brazen robbery occurred at the chain’s Encino location around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The L.A. Times reports as many as four suspects went into the store, one watching the door while the others demanded cash from the manager. It’s one of several robberies at Trader Joe’s throughout Southern California in recent months. Long Beach police say the Trader Joe’s on Bellflower Blvd. was hit twice in two weeks. In those incidents, a lone suspect went into the store pulled a gun on a store employee and demanded cash. The robberies in Long Beach and Encino happened in the evening. Detroit, MI: Off-Duty Police Officer gets Probation for beating wrongly accused Meijer shoplifter Lonnie Wade, 65, was sentenced to three years probation. Retired Officer Lonnie Wade, 65, pleaded no contest to assault with intent to do great bodily harm. The charges of felonious assault and two counts of misconduct in office were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. David Bivins was arrested at the store on the city's east side Oct. 8, 2017, for disorderly conduct and resisting and obstruction after he was accused of shoplifting. Developing your verbal skills and focusing on your specific word usage to convey messages is incredibly important for any successful executive.
