In the Store: Retail Innovation with a Purpose

By Kim Warne, Vice President & CMO, Sensormatic Solutions

There has never been a time when technology has been more critical to retail performance than it is today. Technology is enabling omnichannel strategies, providing supply chain visibility and changing how retailers connect with consumers through social media and other digital channels.

While online and mobile are still integral components in the modern consumer’s shopping journey, a majority of retail capital investments are now being allocated to store networks. Making smart technology investments can deliver tremendous value to retail stores, to optimize staffing, increase inventory turns, enable secure frictionless transactions, and to empower store associates to become effective brand ambassadors. To achieve strong store performance now and in the future, retailers must operate seamlessly and efficiently while delivering unique, differentiated brand experiences. The right technology investments can help retailers reach both of these goals simultaneously.

Leveraging your investment: new insights through connectivity

Insights into store traffic patterns are key to understanding the path to purchase and conversion. Smart loss prevention solutions deliver real-time insights to help retailers make effective data-driven decisions that may positively impact shrink and bottom line results. Inventory intelligence solutions help retailers gain item-level visibility into accurate and timely inventory across the enterprise. Combining data across these solutions can create even more value as the adoption of data analytics and smart, connected devices can provide retailers a more holistic, precise view of their business.

With a consolidated view, retailers can better understand peak shopping hours and combine those insights with inventory visibility to identify when shelves may need to be restocked. This holistic approach can also help align staffing decisions with times where there is an increase in sales and conversion, along with the potential loss events due to heavy foot traffic. When different business areas work in tandem with each another, retailers can better ensure that the shopper who was looking for the red blouse not only finds the blouse faster than before, but also that the experience builds loyalty for repeat visits.

Violent Incidents Soar in Multiple Cities
"McDonald's workers say restaurants are a magnet for crime"
Filed One Week Before Shareholders Meeting
In a report filed this week with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, employees at a McDonald's on the south side of Chicago said their workplace had been the scene of 31 violent incidents over six months during the past year. The mayhem included violent fights and customers attacking workers over missing french fries — three recent incidents involved customers assaulting or threatening workers with a firearm.

McDonald's isn't training workers and store managers on how to deal with violence at its restaurants, workers and labor advocates say.

Customers brandishing guns; bloody fistfights; physical attacks on employees — for workers at one Chicago McDonald's restaurant, life behind the counter can sometimes be downright life-threatening. Labor advocates also say such incidents occur with alarming regularity at other of the fast-foot chain's restaurants, including shootings, sexual assaults and robberies.

The Chicago workers, who worked with the union-based Fight for $15 campaign to file the OSHA complaint, said in their letter that employees placed dozens of 911 calls from the restaurant since November but that its manager urged them to tone down their distress out of concern the eatery might get shut down. Now they want OSHA to investigate McDonald's handling of what they contend is "systemic" violence at its U.S. locations.

1,356 calls to 911 from 1 Chicago McDonalds alone.

Starbucks Lawsuit Alleges NYC Stores Exposed Customers To Toxic Pesticide
Starbucks is facing two lawsuits alleging that it exposed customers and employees of its selected New York City stores to poisonous pesticide toxin called Dichlorvos or DDVP.

A former Starbucks employee and two pest control workers filed a lawsuit on May 21, claiming that the coffee company has, for years, allowed the use of toxic chemicals in its stores, which infused not only the food products and fixtures but also the air circulated throughout its retail locations in the city.

The charges specifically identified Starbucks' use of the Hot Shot No-Pest 2 strips, which, according to the Hot Shot website, should not be used in kitchens, restaurants, or areas where food is prepared or served. techtimes.com

Biometrics Institute warns biometrics misuse could undermine public confidence
Following recent reports of facial recognition technology being misused, The Biometrics Institute is urging law enforcement agencies, border management agencies and governments to follow existing good practices to ensure responsible use of biometrics. If they fail to do so, the Institute warns that regulators may restrict usage and place an onus on the industry to ensure privacy protections.

International laws and standards for biometrics have yet to be developed, and the Biometrics Institute has taken on a role of issuing good practice guidelines to help organizations assess and implement responsible and ethical biometrics practices. Using biometrics without regard for these principles risks undermining public confidence in policing and counter-terrorism applications of the technology, according to the Institute’s announcement. biometricupdate.com

Amazon To Continue Selling 'Rekognition' Facial Recognition
Amazon said on Wednesday that its shareholders had voted down proposals that would have pushed the company to reconsider its societal impact in two key areas: facial recognition and climate change.

One proposal asked Amazon to put the brakes on how the company sells surveillance technologies to governments.

One proposal asked the board to commission “an independent study” looking at several issues, such as whether customers could use Rekognition to “unfairly or disproportionately target or surveil people of color, immigrants and activists in the United States” or whether it sold to authoritarian or repressive governments abroad. The other asked the company to stop selling Rekognition to government customers unless the board determined the technology did not help perpetrate civil and human rights abuses.

The company and its board have said they are not aware of any time that law enforcement agencies have used Amazon Rekognition to infringe on civil liberties. The board said the report would be a waste of money on “hypothetical and speculative concerns.” And it said the outright ban did not make sense because “we do not believe that the potential for customers to misuse results generated by Amazon Rekognition should prevent us from making that technology available to our customers.” nytimes.com

Fraud Alert: Amazon's Free One-Day Shipping Changes the Rules for eCommerce
In late April, Amazon announced plans to offer free one-day shipping to all Amazon Prime customers nationwide. Shortly afterward, Walmart announced the availability of free one-day shipping of orders totaling $35 or more. Chargebacks911, a leading dispute mitigation and loss prevention firm, cautions competing eCommerce vendors to maintain sound online security and payment security measures as they focus on shortening their fulfillment schedules.

“Competition from the giants will force smaller retailers to invest outside their annual budgets to provide faster delivery. These merchants may be tempted to relax their online security and payment security measures somewhat to retain as many customers as possible.”

At a time when so-called ‘friendly fraud’ chargebacks are increasing at a rate of 20% per year, however, it is essential that eCommerce merchants maintain payment security in order to protect business growth and cash flow. prweb.com

Getting Back to Basics with ePVM's

LPRC: Customers & Associates Feel Safer
LP Positively Impacting the Customer Experience

With the entire retail industry focused on re-defining and creating a unique customer experience that melds together the online and store environments, digital signage is destined to play a starring role in every aspect of retail. Once again, loss prevention has been leading the effort with Enhanced Public View Monitors (ePVMs) being one of the first interactive video monitors to show up in stores.

Certainly it's been a long and hard battle to gain the support and funding for what now is considered one of the basics in situational crime prevention. But with the Loss Prevention Research Council's (LPRC) ePVM impact study showing that customers "feel safer in stores with e/PVMs" it may be an opportune time to review and consider expanding the program. Especially with CBD products hitting the market.

With that in mind, there's also the opportunity to turn the entire program into a revenue generator with Media PVMs. Just like the EAS towers used for marketing, these media PVMs can be used for marketing as well. It really all depends on how good your selling skills are and how strong your relationships are in the organization.

With customer experience being the #1 driver right now, it all starts with customers feeling safer, and every retailer has to be focused on that goal.

New Email Attack Variants Skyrocketing
Email Attacks Are Getting More Sophisticated & Frequent
PDFs Most Porous Point of Networks

Researchers and security experts said that infected files are evolving in ways that traditional defenses find difficult to detect.

Some attacks come embedded within legitimate files widely used in corporate and government offices, such as PDFs and Microsoft Corp.’s Word and Excel. Common email quarantines don’t stop these file formats because such tools scan messages for suspicious file extensions, or work from lists of known malware variants. A legitimate, but infected, file can pass through, according to security experts.

Other, more advanced malware can analyze a victim company’s network for vulnerabilities and defenses and take different actions depending on what it detects, such as activating or waiting for a more opportune moment to do so.

Attacks are also getting more frequent, according to some security firms. Firewall provider SonicWall Inc. said it detected 74,000 new Microsoft Office and PDF attack variants in 2018.

That number jumped to 173,000 in the first quarter of 2019 and most attacks were launched at U.S. businesses and government offices.

"I’ve not yet heard of a company taking the drastic move of outlawing PDFs, and those are the most porous points of our networks, as they come in through email,” he said. cmail20.com

DDoS Attacks Up 84% in Q1 Over Q4
Even After Law Enforcement Crackdowns

Sudden surge suggests that new actors have stepped up to the plate to replace the old operators.

Distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS) — particularly those lasting more than an hour — increased sharply in number during the first quarter of this year over the prior quarter after declining steadily for most of 2018.

The unexpected resurgence suggests that new suppliers of DDoS services have quietly emerged to replace operators that were disrupted in a series of law enforcement actions last year, Kaspersky Lab said in a report summarizing DDoS activity in Q1 2019.

The security vendor's analysis shows the number of DDoS attacks in Q1 to be some 84% higher than the number recorded in the last three months of 2018.

One significant trend that Kaspersky Lab notes is number of attacks lasting one hour or longer doubled over Q4 at 21% of all attacks. Over one in 10 (10.13%) of the DDoS attacks in Kaspersky Lab's dataset lasted between five hours and nine hours, and another 9.37% lasted between 10 hours and 49 hours — or more than two days. Some 2% of the attacks were longer than 50 hours, with the longest one lasting 289 hours, or just over 12 days.

Kaspersky Lab's new report is the latest to highlight the continuing threat that DDoS attacks present to organizations despite some major wins for law enforcement against those behind such attacks. darkreading.com

New Software Skims Credit Card Info From Online Credit Card Transactions
A new strain of software designed to steal financial information from retail websites has surfaced, demonstrating criminals' ability to adapt and improve their tools in the face of improved security measures.

The software, discovered by researcher Jérôme Segura at Malwarebytes, takes advantage of the popular retail practice of using a third-party credit card payment organization to facilitate credit card use. In this case, the software targets companies using Magento as their financial processing service provider. The malicious software inserts an iframe around the display code that would send the customer to Magento to finalize a purchase — an iframe that requests and captures the customer payment card info far earlier than it would be requested in a legitimate transaction.

This new attack is similar to an earlier overlay code tactic used by Magecart. It allows the purchase to proceed, minimizing the speed with which it might be found, but will exfiltrate customer payment information in the process. The only real clue for those who don't have the checkout page layout memorized is the process by which payment information is requested twice — which should alert all consumers that something is amiss. darkreading.com

Alibaba counterfeit crackdown “driving fakes to other platforms”
Once the poster child of the problem of online counterfeits, Alibaba has been working hard to set its house in order, and says 2018 marked another successful year of campaigning against illicit trade on its platforms.

Matthew Bassiur, Alibaba’s head of global intellectual property enforcement, says the company is now operating an industry-leading anti-counterfeit programme, and that is driving counterfeiters to use different distribution channels.

For Alibaba’s internal efforts, the single biggest factor in tackling the trade has been the collaboration with brand owners, associations and governments, something that it has attempted to generate via its Alibaba Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance (AACA), formed in 2017 to bring cooperation on anti-counterfeit to a much higher level.

Close interaction with brand owners helps get the most out of all of Alibaba’s anti-counterfeit programmes, which centre around counterfeit listing takedowns, proactive monitoring of listings to try to prevent counterfeits from reaching consumers, and off-line enforcement of actions against offenders.

“We’re hearing from rights holders that they are finding fewer and fewer counterfeits across our platforms,” said Bassiur, while consumer satisfaction ratings are significantly improving. On Alibaba’s Taobao platform, for example, the number of refunds given for counterfeit purchases fell by 26 per cent last year.

Offline enforcement – going after the manufacturers, suppliers and distributors of counterfeits – is the third pillar of Alibaba’s strategy and also resulted in some successes last year, with the arrest of 1,953 criminal suspects and the closure of 1,542 facilities involved in the manufacturing and distribution of illicit goods. The total value of these cases was estimated at RMB 7.9 billion ($1.1bn). securingindustry.com

Amazon is 3D-scanning people's bodies in exchange for gift cards
Amazon has been conducting research that involves digital 3D "scans" of people's bodies in exchange for a $25 Amazon gift card. The e-commerce giant is currently carrying out the image study at two different locations in New York City.

The signup page for the study claims that Amazon takes 3D scans, photos, and videos of study participants, both fully clothed and in “form-fitting” swimwear. Height and weight measurements are also collected during the session. On the website, Amazon states that the data collected during the study is “exclusively for internal product research” and will not be used in a marketing capacity. mashable.com

Shootings & Deaths

San Jose, CA: Six arrested in fatal Dollar Tree store stabbing in April
Six San Jose residents have been arrested in connection with the homicide of a 32-year-old man last month at a Dollar Tree store in the Berryessa neighborhood of the suspects’ hometown, police said Tuesday. Officers responded to 1178 N. Capitol Ave. at 6:48 p.m., April 4 to reports of a stabbing. Ryan Rousse was found lying inside the store suffering from at least one stab wound, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. The same night, officers arrested four suspects. Police said Anthony DeLaTorre, 24, and Dialo Terry, 19, were both arrested in connection with the killing several days later. A police investigation found that Rousse was being chased by a group of people earlier that night, and a witness had called the incident in to police. Witnesses later called to say the victim was being chased into the store, and a confrontation led to the stabbing.

Covington, GA: Officer who was shot in the face talks about recovery, community support, and new goals in life
Covington Police Officer Matt Cooper has made a recovery that many would say is nothing short of a miracle. He was shot in the head on September 3, 2018 while responding to a shoplifting call at the Covington Walmart. Wednesday, at a ceremony to honor the first responders who saved Cooper’s life, he sat down to speak publicly about his progress.

Cooper said he doesn’t remember much about the day he was shot last September. He said he remembers taking the call and sending two juveniles to the loss prevention department in Walmart before going to assist with another teen who was running away. “I’m looking to the left. I see him in the woods and that’s it,’’ Cooper said. The teen who shot Cooper in the head, ultimately committed suicide in the woods, leaving Cooper wounded. cbs46.com

Sometimes the best reaction is no reaction as the old expression "Silence is Golden" is more applicable than most think. Especially in a situation where you're unfamiliar with the surroundings, the people, the cultural beliefs, or the boundaries. The key is having the self-discipline not to react or speak. It can help prevent you from going too far or showing anger and it just may keep you from destroying a relationship or your reputation. Reacting is easy – listening and bidding your time isn't.

Just a Thought,
Gus
