ICE arrests 114 at Ohio garden center in major mass raid
A swarm of immigration agents arrested more than 100 workers at an Ohio gardening and landscaping company Tuesday morning, one of the largest of several recent workplace raids carried out as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration enforcement. About 200 federal officers blitzed two locations of Corso’s Flower and Garden Center — one in Sandusky, on the shoreline of Lake Erie, and another in nearby Castalia, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told the Associated Press. Agents surrounded the perimeter of the Castalia location, blocking off nearby streets as helicopters flew overhead.

They arrested 114 workers suspected of being in the country illegally and loaded many onto buses bound for ICE detention facilities. Dozens of the workers’ children were left stranded at day-care centers and with babysitters, local activists wrote on social media. Officials expect to charge the undocumented workers with identity theft and tax evasion. They reviewed 313 employee records and found that 123 were suspicious, agency officials told the AP. ICE is also investigating the role the employer played in hiring the undocumented immigrants but has not yet filed charges against the family business, said Khaalid Walls, an agency spokesman. washingtonpost.com

Massachusetts Court Upholds $20 Million Award in Shopper's 2010 Death
C-Store Cumberland Farms Found Responsible for Storefront Car Crash

The Massachusetts Appeals Court has upheld a $20 million award in a wrongful death suit against Cumberland Farms over a woman killed when a car crashed into one of the chain's stores in Chicopee in November 2010.

The June 6 ruling follows a Hampden Superior Court judge's reduction of the award in August 2016 from $32.3 million to $20 million. In the same ruling, the appeals court denied a request from Cumberland Farms for a new trial.

Hampden Superior Court Judge Mark D. Mason reduced the amount -- at the time believed to be the largest ever in Hampden County -- five months after jurors found the chain responsible for the death of Kimmy Dubuque. A 43-year-old mother and director of finance at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Dubuque was killed on Nov. 28, 2010 when an elderly man crashed his SUV at more than 70 mph into the store at Grove and Front streets. The driver, who suffered a stroke, was not prosecuted.

The victim's family sued Cumberland Farms, claiming the site was dangerous and barriers should have been installed to prevent vehicles from colliding with the building. masslive.com

People Are Stealing Millions From Grocery Stores by Scanning Items as Carrots
Self-checkout in grocery stores has definitely made the chore of shopping a little better. Maybe not for the people whose job it is to teach octogenarians about the joys of touchscreen technology, but for most of us. One group, however, seems to be benefiting from this technology most of all: thieves.

British shoppers have reportedly been sneakily weighing a variety of items as "carrots" at self-checkout stations, and over the last four years this has totaled up to $4 million in theft, according to a report by The Independent. And it's become so common that many don't even think of it as a crime.

“This behaviour is perceived as cheating the system or a way of ‘gamifying’ an otherwise mundane routine,” Emmeline Taylor, professor of criminology at the University Of London, told the Times of Malta. thrillist.com

Retailers and ATM networks form new coalition to address payments security
The National Retail Federation, other retail groups and two of the nation’s best-known ATM networks announced today that they have formed a new coalition intended to improve the security of the U.S. electronic payments system ranging from credit and debit cards to emerging technology.

Initial members of the Secure Payments Partnership include NRF, the Food Marketing Institute, the National Association of Convenience Stores, the National Grocers Association, First Data’s Star Network and the Shazam network. The coalition marks the first time that companies from the financial services industry have joined retailers’ efforts to improve payments security. nrf.com

Security Concerns Slowing Down Adoption of 'Frictionless Payments'
The excitement surrounding frictionless payments - pioneered by sharing apps like Uber, but also including voice-enabled payments through digital assistants and just-walk-out store technology like the Amazon Go concept - makes them seem inevitable. Consumer concerns about security, however, could make adoption slower than expected according to new research from payment provider Paysafe.

While the convenience of these payments is unparalleled, security concerns continue to dog them. Half of those polled in the Lost in Transaction 2018 survey will not use them because they have concerns with fraud. Nearly 70 percent worry that voice-activated systems like the Amazon Echo or Google Home Assistant will overcharge them when they make purchases. And, 57 percent think that stores using just-walk-out technology are too risky. cardnotpresent.com

Study: New factors are shaping the future of commerce
Retail factors are no longer solely influencing the shopping journey. Rather, politics, voice-controlled devices, Amazon, and new technology innovations are being credited for driving a new era of commerce, according to the “Future of Retail 2018” a report from Walker Sands. chainstoreage.com

When the FBI Can Help Companies Deal With a Cyber Event
Companies that discover a potentially significant cyber incident usually turn to their trusted outside law firm and a cybersecurity firm for assistance. But many companies decide not to reach out to the FBI, which can be a mistake in certain circumstances. Considering the practical assistance that the FBI can provide to targets of a cyber attack, and its recent statements expressing a commitment to support corporate victims of data breaches, companies and their outside advisors should give serious thought to reaching out to the FBI as part of their incident responses.

Reasons for Reluctancy

One reason that companies are reluctant to contact the FBI in the early stages of a cyber event is that they often know very little. In the first few days, details like how the attack was executed, what vulnerability was exploited, and which parts of the network were exposed, are illusive - or, as FBI Director Christopher Wray described it during Q&A at the 2018 Boston Conference on Cyber Security, they don’t have the incident “wrapped up in a nice, neat bundle with a bow on top.”

This hesitancy is understandable considering companies’ experiences working with government agencies in other contexts, where it is expected that companies will have answers to the government’s questions and will demonstrate an understanding of the relevant facts. But those rules generally don’t apply in a cyber attack, and recent statements by the FBI underscore that the earlier the Bureau is notified, the more efficiently and effectively it can provide companies with assistance. law.com

Gartner Security Summit: Enterprises, Vendors Respond to Cybercriminals
Cybercriminals may be more aggressive than ever, but security vendors are responding with new technologies – and enterprises are investing in them.

Those were some of the recurring themes at this week's Gartner Security Summit in National Harbor, Maryland, where more than 3,400 IT executives gathered to hear the latest in cybersecurity trends and technologies.

State of the security market

Gartner analyst Dana Gardner provided an update on the security market and spending trends. The overall security market is expected to grow by 8.5% this year to $96.6 billion, with most of the growth and sales coming in enterprise technologies. The relatively small $4.75 billion consumer market remains flat.

Services is the largest enterprise security market at $57.72 billion, as buyers have expressed a preference for service delivery, followed by infrastructure at $17.54 billion, network security at $11.92 billion, and identity and access management at $4.72 billion.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is driving a great deal of growth in security spending, with business in the EU setting aside an average of $1.4 million for compliance, and affected U.S. businesses spending $1 million – and in some cases up to $10 million – to comply with the new data privacy and security law. esecurityplanet.com

The Industrial Internet of Things
Building a Safe, Efficient, Cost-Effective Security Infrastructure

With more than 327,000 robberies occurring last year in the United States, and with firearms used in roughly 40% of those incidents, security continues to be a key concern for businesses, governments, schools, and the general public. Gun control continues to be one of the most debated topics, and while the nation stands divided, according to the Brady Campaign there are 93 deaths from gun violence each day. However, despite prevailing security threats, there are still many issues such as infrastructure constraints, cost, access to data, and other barriers that result in ineffective safety.

So, how can organizations address these ever-growing security concerns — both digital and physical? That's where the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) comes in. Many organizations, such as the police, are turning to data analytics and IIoT technologies to protect citizens in an efficient and cost-effective way. For example, if someone is vandalizing a public space or property, IIoT technology can alert law enforcement officers by sending real-time alerts, so the perpetrator is caught in the act while crime remediation costs are reduced. As a result, IIoT devices and platforms are being deployed in a greater number of public safety programs. darkreading.com

FCC Seeks $3M Fine For Drone Retailer Accused Of Illegal Sales
The Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday it is proposing a $2.86 million penalty against remote control products retailer HobbyKing, which the agency alleges markets video transmitters for use racing unmanned drones that operate outside amateur frequency bands and power limits.

The FCC said HobbyKing, the trade name for a group of U.S. and Hong Kong-based businesses that market model airplane and drone products online, failed to fully respond to a letter of inquiry or a series of follow-ups on drone products allegedly capable of operating outside FCC-designated frequency and power ranges. law360.com

Dangerous fake electric goods sold on Amazon and eBay, research says
One in three UK consumers have mistakenly purchased a counterfeit electrical item online

Popular e-commerce sites such as Amazon, eBay and Fruugo are being misused by third party sellers to exploit online UK shoppers and expose them to thousands of fake and potentially dangerous electrical goods, an investigation has claimed today.

The charity Electrical Safety First (ESF) found that one in three UK consumers – about 18 million people – has mistakenly purchased a counterfeit electrical item online. They were led to believe that the product was genuine, only to find it was a knockoff item at risk of causing an electric shock or even a fire.

Products found to have serious safety flaws range from large household appliances such as tumble dryers, to kettles, travel adaptors, hair straighteners and Kodi boxes, which allow users to stream content from apps and on-demand services.

Millennials are most likely to fall victim to counterfeit scams, according to the new findings which show that about half of 25- to 34-year-olds have been conned into buying fake electrical goods online. In contrast the research found that less than 10% of people aged 55 or over have received a counterfeit item after shopping on e-commerce websites. theguardian.com

Fayette County, OH: Ringleaders sentenced in Interstate cargo theft; $11.9 M of merchandise
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office participated in a collaborative, years-long investigation that recently resulted in the federal court sentencing of four individuals convicted of participating in a wide-ranging conspiracy to steal truckloads of high-value merchandise traveling in interstate commerce.

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, among those sentenced in New Albany were the ringleaders of the theft organization: Roberto Santos-Gonzalez, 37; Carlos Enrique Freire-Pifferrer, 39; Juan Perez-Gonzalez, 44; and Eduardo Hernandez, 55.

Santos, Freire, Perez and Hernandez were named, along with nine others, in a 23-count indictment alleging that between August 2012 and May 2015, the members of the conspiracy traveled from various locations throughout the United States, to Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and other states, in order to steal property being transported in interstate commerce by semi-tractor trailers.

Members of the group would then transport the stolen trailers full of merchandise to locations in Kentucky, New Jersey, Florida and elsewhere, and sell the stolen merchandise for financial gain, according to the press release. The loads targeted by the crime syndicate included truckloads of T-Mobile cellular phones, Samsung appliances, Ralph Lauren clothing, Dell computers, HP computers, Pfizer pharmaceuticals, Mead Johnson baby formula, Lorillard cigarettes, and one truckload of LG cellular phones valued at $11.9 million. recordherald.com

Interesting how the social dynamics of a small industry mirror, somewhat, the same social dynamics of a family, with the holidays and conferences almost being one in the same, where we're excited to visit with old friends and colleagues, yet cautious about the battle lines business and careers at times necessitate or cause. At the end of the day, it's all about doing what's right for the industry, adding value, helping people, and continuing to help evolve the industry. And while each executive has their individual agendas, it's important to remember that we are all part of one industry and we all share one goal - to guide, nurture, and evolve it.

Just a Thought,
