Catch your people doing it right. It is so
easy to get caught up in finding errors; we forget to
reward our employees for the things they do correct
every day. Maybe someone helps the new guy; maybe the
new guy helps see an existing situation differently;
let's remember together that our employees do hundreds
of things right each and every day. A "nice job" or
"excellent insight" goes a long way toward job
satisfaction and longevity. It is far easier and more
cost effective to keep a good employee than recruit,
screen, hire, and train a new employee.
Take this a step further and let employees catch each
other doing great work. Empower your team members to
recognize other team members for their contributions.
Depending upon the size of your team, this could be a
monthly or quarterly recognition. The award could be a
simple certificate and/or gift card (I have found gift
cards for coffee, movies or restaurants very effective).
