Four more found guilty in 14-state $2M+ federal identity theft ring in Minnesota that hit retailers and financials institutions. The defendants were among 28 people charged in the conspiracy. The other 24 defendants pleaded guilty in the case. Wicklund, who has been investigating the case since Labor Day weekend of 2008, said of the $2 million in fraudulent checks, around $50,000 turned up at stores in northern Minnesota, which includes Brainerd and Baxter. Through their places of employment, some members of the theft ring stole the identification information of customers and others, providing it to co-conspirators who then used it to create false identification documents, such as driver’s licenses and identification cards, along with counterfeit checks. Information was stolen through other means as well, including mail theft, vehicle break-ins, and business burglaries. Some was even purchased from other criminals. The defendants face a maximum potential penalty of 30 years in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and a mandatory minimum consecutive penalty of two years in prison for identity theft. Multi-state credit card scam comes to an end in Franklin, Tennessee. Bond has been set at $1 million dollars for two Ohio suspects who were pulling off a high end, multi state credit card fraud scam. Twenty seven credit cards were recovered along with over $70,000 of merchandise. (Source newschannel5.com)
