Delivery disruptions loom for e-retailers using Canada Post
The inability for Canada Post Corp., the operator of Canada’s national postal service, and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), to come to agreement may leave e-retailers in the lurch come Saturday.
The two groups have been negotiating a labor contract since January but as of July 2, all bets are off. Canada Post can lock out the roughly 50,000 mail carriers, or the carriers can strike. If either happens, all Canada Post deliveries—including any parcels awaiting delivery—will stop. internetretailer.com

Brexit closes gateway to Europe for Canadian companies
Canadian firms with offices and investments in the U.K. saw their stocks fall Friday amid a bloody global market mess in reaction to Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, an outcome that took many by surprise. The Canada-U.K. Chamber of Commerce said Friday that most of its 300 members — including every major Canadian corporation with British operations — had clearly backed the remain side. Britain is Canada’s fifth-largest trading partner, accounting for about $21.2 billion in trade. cbc.ca

Calgary, AB: Man shot in failed Temple liquor store robbery attempt
Birk, who owns Global Liquor in Temple, says he was getting ready to close up his shop Friday just before midnight when two men came into the store. One of the men tried to distract Birk while the other tried to stuff a bottle down his pants.

As they attempted to flee, the men got trapped between the two exit doors which had been locked by Birk. That’s when the man with the gun, who looked panicked in the surveillance video, opened fire. One shot hit Birk in the arm, and three more shots were fired to break open the door and escape. The shot, which hit him in the arm, missed an artery by just one centimetre.

Canada Day fireworks worth $13,000 stolen from plaza in northwest London
A London fireworks vendor lost nearly half his inventory in a break-in leading up to Canada Day, the busiest week in the business. More than $13,000 worth of fireworks were looted from a storage container at a northwest London plaza, leaving owner Moe Hamid fuming. Someone forced their way into the six-metre metal unit that serves as an impromptu shop by cutting the lock’s hinges, said Hamid, adding most of the stolen fireworks were the high-ticket pyrotechnics, costing between $60 to $100 apiece. But it’s not just the bottom line that Hamid’s worried about. Many of the nicked fireworks pack the most powerful explosions allowed for recreational use, he said. lfpress.com

Montreal jewel thief, whose face was burned by acid in all-out brawl with jeweler, gets 12 years in prison
Richardson François, 31, received the sentence Wednesday afternoon during a hearing at the Montreal courthouse. Quebec Court Judge Hélène Morin mentioned the fact that François ‎remains heavily scarred by the nitric acid that was tossed in his face in January 2013. But she did not list it as a mitigating factor when she explained how she reached the 12-year sentence. The Crown had asked for a 14-year sentence and Morin said she decided on 12 years because François had pleaded guilty to the armed robbery in the Park Extension neighborhood, another robbery committed at a jewelry store in October 2012. nationalpost.com
