Rona gets Metro's COO - Great news for Rona 
Rona, based in Boucherville, Quebec, said Tuesday Sawyer is an “operations and distribution specialist” who will lead a “transformational strategy" that Rona unveiled last month. Rona's has some difficult years and with fending off Lowe's offer last year, the Target invasion, and losing their infamous CEO last year they've been struggling. Target's first three stores have been consistently "slammed" with customers  "We thought that there would be an initial bump and what I would say is that the bump has not leveled off to the degree that we thought,” Morioka said during a media tour of Target’s East York Town Centre location. “That has probably been the most surprising part of it and we haven’t been able to recover.” (Source canadiangrocer.com)

Canadian Tire to roll-out 5,000 tablet devices for customers to research products in store  The initiative will see the 91-year-old seller of hockey sticks and garden hoses launch a digital content hub this month on its website to integrate with the planned rollout in May and June of 5,000 tablet devices to its stores for customers to look up products and information on site. Sobeys grocery stores warehouse workers end 29-day strike 
Local reports said that after a meeting on March 11, some 428 full- and part-time workers, who are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 175, accepted improvements to the contract that was previously rejected. This spring, the grocery chain has a deal to supply groceries to discount retailer Target, which is opening stores in Canada come March. (Source canadiangrocer.com)


Five from Montreal charged with fraud hitting retailers in Newfoundland including Shoppers Drugmart, Sobey's and Lawton's  Five checked into a St. John's hotel on March 1 and later that day police receceived a report of suspicious activity and obtained a search warrant. They recovered more than 300 payment cards, including cards from a variety of local retailers, as well as cards from popular credit card companies. "This is organized crime. Video of security guards accused of excessive force at Chinook Center probed  Calgary police are now investigating the circumstances around a video posted March 16 on the internet that some say show five security guards using excessive force on a shopper. The situation escalated because a shopper was sitting on an escalator for the ride down. He stood up and got off the escalator, but was asked to leave the mall. The Mall guards reacted. Police called to West Edmonton Mall; possible man with gun at 2 am this morning.  Early reports by mall security Friday morning of a possible man with a gun in the parking lot of the West Edmonton Mall. Surveillance then captured the driver of a vehicle attempting run down a group of pedestrians. Two possible suspects have been arrested, police said they need to sober up before they can be interviewed. (Source inews880.com)
